Themed issues get us giddy. Instead of bringing you awesome content from
different makes and models (which is fun, too) we get a chance to put together a
magazine that represents everything awesome about a certain manufacturer or
theme. In this months case: Nissans. We searched far and wide to bring you content
thatll relate to you, whether youre a horsepower freak (R32 Skyline racer on P. 48), stance
addict (Silvia from Japan on P. 16), old school cat (Datsun on P. 82) or simply into sick street
builds like our cover carsthis issue has something for everyone and will hopefully make a
permanent home in your bathroom or on your coffee table.
Battle for CoverIf you could have watched us in the office this
month, you would have witnessed our constant
fights about what car would take center stage
on the coverI still have scratch marks from
Bernices nails. Ultimately, we had to give it to the
R34 Skyline GT-R because of its all-wheel drive and
twin-turbo awesomeness, plus the fact that we
never had the chance to buy one stateside. Its still held as one of the biggest import icons of all
time. and with its limited production from '99-'02, its becoming harder to find a super-clean
yet regularly driven example like David Lais from australia, which is why it won a primo spot
on this months cover.
thank Youyou might have noticed that our regular group of staffers has changed over the last few
months. Weve had some awesome people on the magazine who have come and gone and we
would like to thank them for all their love and support. With that said, Super Street isnt going
anywhere and well still have the same great cast of contributors along with some fresh faces
to make the mag better than ever. So kick back, enjoy our Nissan issue and we look forward to
seeing you again next month!

Style Or PerfOrmance: Where DO yOur allegianceS lie?
Words Jonathan Wong Photos Colin Waki
The art of building a car for style alone is often
times just as impressive as those who choose
the way of performance. Theyll argue back and
forth endlessly, but at the end of the day these
arguments are all valid; it ultimately remains the owners
choice on how they choose to modify, just as it is yours to
dress, style and go about any of your daily business. For Keita
Kikuchi, he tends to fall on the stylish side but he knows fully
well that its what makes his car stand out. In fact, he was so
hard up about the lack of mods under his engine bay that he
refused to pop the hood (its not entirely stock, as it sports the
required basics). Were okay with that
What drew us to this particular Silvia was its approach to exterior styling. Part
of the last generation of the S-chassis, the S15 has a unique silhouette all its own
but Keitas has been modified classically to help retain this perfection with parts
from the 326power collection, such as a 3D STaR aero kit using a front bumper,
roof spoiler and side skirts. The custom color combination could be considered a
little wild with its copper accents, yet its fashionable without being gaudy. The roof
is done in true Japanese style, a brushed green metallic look that we think is a nice
touch. Keita also selected black faced SSR Professor VF-1s to help fill the widened
Super Made fenders and custom-pulled rear arches.
Suspension is a primary area of modification for Keita, so he installed coilovers
and several different types of control arms to help pull off its slammed look and
to help keep the tires from hitting the fenders, which it did until he had it set up

properly. Even the slightest change in ride height affects the alignment, Keita
explains. Every time you make these changes, test-drive the car over and over until
youre satisfied. Inside, the car bursts out at you in a sea of red with Bride seats,
custom upholstered rear seats, center console and floor mats. Even his jungle gym-
like 8-point Saito roll cage is wrapped with red cushioning to match.
Keitas ride may not be the typical drift machine that were normally accustomed
to seeing when it comes to the S15 chassis but its still a very cool looking
alternative for those who crave a difference without sacrificing performance where
it counts. Style maintains its argument for another day

The 411 The holy grail of Nissans. While we would all sell our left nut
to own an R34, wed probably sell both to get our hands on an original
Hakosuka. We featured this GC10 from BIKO Works four years back and
its beauty is still engraved in our memories. BIKO Works specializes in
modifying and selling vintage Japanese cars so it was one of the main
stops during our visit to Japan in 2010. This particular '71 GT-R still uses
the venerable 2.0-liter straight-six S20 but with side-draft carbs and
velocity stacks. The wheels are staggered Watanabe R-Types while the
suspension received custom coilovers. Brembo calipers, plus a Protec front
lip and flares finish the Skyline up. yeah, theres no crazy engine swap or a
list of mods, but who cares? The Hakosuka is simply sexy and with BIKO
Works modifications, its no mystery why its in the top five!

The 411 Contrary to BIKO Works clean and tidy Skyline, Rocky
auto is the exact opposite when it comes to retro Nissans.
They go HaM! The Japanese tuner set out to build the baddest
S31 on the planet by swapping in an RB26DETT into this old
chassis. Upgraded with an HKS turbo and a bunch of other
goodies, the Fairlady puts down 580+hp! But waitthats not
all! The body features custom flares, front lip, rear diffuser and
a carbon hood from Rocky auto. The wider body allows those
massive 18x10/12" Work wheels to fit along with meaty tires
for necessary grip. Badass is an understatement when it comes
to this Z!

The 411 White is right when it comes to auto Selects '02
GT-R. Taking cues from the Nismo Z-Tune package, it sports a
twist that includes a custom carbon-fiber front bumper and lip
spoiler, plus hood. and with the color-matched 18x10.5" Volk
Racing TE37s, this is as sexy as an R34 gets. But not built just
for looks, the V-Spec II summons power from a bulletproof
RB thats been stroked to a 2.8-liter using HKS pistons, rods
and crank. The turbo is a massive T88 from Trust allowing this
boosted beauty to reach upwards of 800hp. Fast and fionnnee,

The 411 Legendary The Mines R34 was designed as a street car but ran
time attack races whenever it felt like. Owned, driven daily and raced by
Mines founder Michiro Kiikura, its got everything from their catalog which
includes larger turbos, carbon clutch, cams, full exhaust and more. Lets
not forget the custom suspension, 18" magnesium wheels built by BBS,
aP Racing brakes and carbon aero pieces. The total package equated to
a 621hp work of art. Not too shabby for a car that worked double duties
as a grocery getter and weekend toy. Its remembered as one of the finest

The 411 Thisistheone! Paul Bischoffs car is the peoples
champ, and we cant argue with you at all. This old school car
is what wet dreams are made of. While this 71 Skyline isnt
a true GT-R, it looks the part with the front and rear flares,
plus NISMO spoilers. The classic Watanabe wheels are picture
perfect and the engine bay even has a bit of a twist. Ditching
the factory L-series, Paul swapped in a more reliable RB25. Its
a non-turbo, but we dont mind. With ITBs out of the RB26,
ported head, modified intake manifold and plenty of other
upgrades, its still plenty of power for this light chassis. Kudos
go out to Paul. We are all madly jealous of you!

The term style is always an interesting topic
of discussion amongst automotive enthusiasts.
you can ask any number of people and they will all
give you varying descriptions of what they dene as
style. It often sparks arguments as well because enthusiasts
just cant simply come to an agreement of what is good
taste. What many people forget, however, is that style is
purely subjective. What you like may not be what the other
person likes and vice versa. The dawn of the Internet-age,
and specically social media, has really blurred the lines of
subjectivity. People no longer sit back and listen to what the
other has to say; instead, they just speak. Rarely do people
value the opinion of othersthey just want their opinion out
rst because they must have their say. The biggest problem
that exists today is that people lack any sort of understanding
(and common courtesy) for their fellow man.
Within the tuner community, style has become a
template. Enthusiasts years ago created the archetype of what
many today see as style and if you stray from that, youre
committing blasphemy. any attempt to try something different
from the norm gets you ostracized, which is a shame really.
The whole idea behind modifying cars in the beginning was to
create something completely your own. When did we lose that?
Today, we are stuck creating something of our own that isnt
our own at all. you change a color accent, switch out a part and
then all of a sudden, its considered original. Theres nothing
wrong with conformity, however, and if thats the road you
choose, then so be it. But why be like everyone else? Generate
some heat. after all, a little controversy never hurt anyone, right?
Kyle Ranauro is no stranger to controversy; in fact, every car hes built has
sparked a bit of talk. Hes a different type of guy that is into cars just like the rest of
usexcept he prefers the road less traveled. Take a moment now to look at his 1991
Nissan 240SX. Some of you will dig it, most will hate, a few will offer the typical car
is cool but the wheels kill it, and many more just wont understand it. It bears styling
cues from many different genres of automotive modifications that when combined,
create a very unique profile unlike many of the Nissan S-chassis builds were
accustomed to seeing. Kyles S13 is also executed in a way that it would be relevant in
Japans ever-thriving car culture. Here in the States, there are only a select few who
can really appreciate the method to Kyles madness. Its a love/hate thing with this
S13; you either appreciate the hell out of all the work invested or despise it. If you
are the latter, thats completely normal because his previous two builds (both Nissan
S-chassis as well) generated a similar reaction.
Ive always loved the S-chassis, Kyle says. Ive built an S14 as well as (an
S13) coupe, but the hatchback in particular was a platform that I really wanted to
mod. There was a vision that I had for a very long time of how the car would come
together and I just wanted it to come to fruition. I worked on and off on this car
over the course of six years, but a trip to Japan awhile back really helped to change
my perspective. What I noticed was how different their tuning culture was; the
enthusiasts there were less critical of one another and people seemed to be very
willing to take risks. Their open-mindedness was refreshing and really motivating.
Ranauros inspiration from Japan was equaled only by his admiration of american
muscle and Lowriders growing up. The challenge for his hatchback was to mesh the
various worlds together to create something entirely uncommon. When the time
came to start putting it all together, he soon realized that incorporating the different
styling elements wouldnt be the problem. as Kyle explains, I encountered obstacles
every step of the way. a lot of it had to do with how low I wanted to drive the car and

how big of wheels I wanted to run. Its uncommon for S-chassis
guys to run 18/19-inch stagger on these cars but it was a look I
was dead-set on having. It was just difficult to keep the car as
low as possible while still having the wheels tuck. My patience
was definitely tested; I had issues with the C/V axles binding,
being either too short or too long, the suspension itself binding,
breaking tie rod ends, centering the power steering rack, etc.
It was a nightmare. I should add that I was also doing all this
work out of my garage.
To accomplish the exact look that he had envisioned while
still keeping the functionality of the vehicle, Ranauro devoted
time into cutting the rear fender well and re-welding sections
of it to get more wheel clearance. All four shock towers
were hammered, folded and stitch-welded to provide room
underneath so that the S13 could still turn lock-to-lock while
planted to the floor. Even the frame rail was made slightly
thinner by cutting and re-welding it to maintain its structure.
Camber adjustments and everything related to holding the
suspension together is made possible by various components
from Parts Shop Max, Ikeya Formula and Megan Racing.
Sitting over the front and rear Work Schwert SC4 wheels
are authentic (and rare) BN Sports Type 4 blister fenders
from Japan. These FRP pieces give the S13 a much stouter,
aggressive faade and the rears have even been bowed-out
an additional 15mm just to house the 19x10.5" wheels. The
most distinctive aesthetic alteration is undoubtedly the rear
hatch, which is from BN Sports as well. After seeing the
Ferrari hatch in photos years ago, Kyle knew that he had
to acquire one for his build. He scoured the web night after
night before eventually landing the discontinued part. His joy
turned to grief when it arrived in America broken in half. I was
devastated, he remembers. I could blame the seller or the
shipping company, but what it came down to was that I was
unlikely to ever find another BN Ferrari hatch. It is such a rare
and obsolete piece so I had to suck it up and repair it myself.
Completing the BN Sports package is still an ongoing struggle
for Ranauro, as he has yet to be able to source an authentic
kit. In its place at the moment is a VIS Racing BN replica, a B
Speed aero kit. He will be the first to admit that it doesnt fit
the greatest, but it will have to do for now until he can unearth
a complete kit from Japan.
The one-off louvered hood created a conundrum of its own.
Being that such large sections of the hood had to be cut out
for the louvered panels, the frame ran this risk of becoming too
thin, ultimately causing the hood to fold or twist. He had to call
upon the expertise of sheet metal designer, Rod Louvers who
knocked the hood out in one sitting. When we asked Kyle why
he chose to go with this specific design for the front of his car,
his reply simply was, I just really like louvers. Touch, Kyle.
Touch.
You would think that with such a strong Japanese influence
that it would almost be a lock that he has a SR20DET Silvia

motor under the louversbut that is not the case. The heart
of this S13 is a turbocharged Ka24DE. For those inquiring,
it isnt turbocharged with some random kit either, just
so Kyle can say that it was boosted because he couldnt
afford an SR-swap. His Ka is built and assembled to handle
some punishment. The Sly alviar-assembled cylinder head
has been upgraded with Jim Wolf Technology cams and
valvetrain components from Supertech, Isky Racing and
NISMO. The 2.4-liter block holds custom JE pistons, Carrillo
connecting rods with Calico-coated rings and a modified
factory crankshaft. Kyles Ka block has also been O-ringed
for maximum sealing to ensure that it can handle the high
stresses of boost. The Garrett 3070 turbine helps to get
this motor well above 400 horsepower (475whp to be
exact) with the assistance of precise tuning from Jim Wolf
Technology. after building this Ka motor, I dont think Ill
ever mess with an SR20 swap again. I love the power, torque
and most importantly, the reliability.
Kyle Ranauro has been the subject of hate fodder ever
since his first S-chassis build, but hes taken it all in stride.
What he has learned over the years is that you cant ever
please anyone but yourself so theres no reason to give into
peoples expectations. Personal style is exactly that: personal.
Build a car in your vision and create for the satisfaction of
ones self, not for the approval of others. We feel that this

Yellow FeverLets face it; there isnt much that compares on the road today
to the Nissan GT-R. The R35 is a powerful, balanced and
basically turnkey track car. It performs leagues past other
competitors similarly priced, giving any Godzilla owner the
biggest bang for their buck. and while it still has a price point
of $100K brand new, pre-owned R35s are dropping into the
$40K-range so theres a reason to get one more than ever
that is, if you earn more than what we do here! But for people
who have the means and can appreciate the GT-R for what it is,
they have a vehicle they can really take advantage of like Tim
Pu from Irvine, Ca. He picked up this '12 model and already
knew what to expect. The GT-R is a fast car! he exclaimed.
But I also wanted to have that wow factor, too. It also had to
be a streetable car that served track duties a few times a year.
and what better place to modify the car than The Rs Tuning in
Tims own hometown?
The Rs Tuning is a fairly new tuner but weve been seeing
nothing but sexy machines coming out of their shop, such as
last years Nissan issue cover car. So with the mission to make
Tims GT-R pop on the street, nothing says look at me better
than bright yellow, right? Precisely! Theres possibly no color
that screams for attention more than the yellow wrap used
on this R35. But underneath the vinyl is what makes this car
speciala mash-up of carbon-fiber body parts. The front
bumpers, side skirts and hood are from Top Racingultra-rare
in the GT-R community and all made of carbon. These parts
were actually the first Top Racing R35 parts imported into the
U.S. according to The Rs Tuning. The madness didnt stop there
with Password JDM fenders, also constructed of carbon and
modified by The Rs Tuning to flow. The rear fenders are from
Wald, while the diffuser is something to admirea combination
of Wald and Difflow pieceswhile the Seibon dry carbon trunk
features a monstrous spoiler from Kognition. Its hard to believe
that with all these different companies used on the exterior, a
car would come together nicely. But it definitely makes it one of
the most recognizable GT-Rs weve ever come across.
The fly bodywork is only just a piece of this R35s puzzle
though. The Rs Tuning continued on to develop the right
handling package for the car. First, the chassis received a KW
sleeve kit designed to work with the factory struts and mounts,
also giving the GT-R a tad sportier ride. New camber arms
were also thrown in to help align the car with -2.5an ideal
setup for the cars street and track duties. For rollers, 20x11"
Volk Racing G25 wheels along with 285-series Nitto NT01 tires
provide impeccable grip for the all-wheel drive beast.
as for power, the twin-turbo V6 already puts down more
than enough for a guy like Tim with a factory-rated 530hp and
448 lb-ft of torque. But who doesnt like more? Without going
overboard, The Rs added an MxP downpipe and exhaust, an
upgraded fuel pump, HKS intake and Cobb Tuning flash. With
some ECU tuning by SP Engineering, the 3.8-liter improved to
545hp and 535 lb-ft.
While many might look at Tims spec list and consider it
minor, its done with the right purpose. The car breaks necks
as it did in the Mackin Industries booth at SEMa last year. Its
also a solid car to spend hours cruising on a long road trip, as
the GT-R proved traveling back and forth from Orange County
to Las Vegas for SEMa. and lastly, it can dominate on the track
as it posted some of the best results and lap times in last years
Optima Challenge. Straight up all-star status if you ask us!
>> Since its nearly impossible to fit passengers in the back seat anyways, we approve the custom cage and harness bar by The Rs Tuning.

goT THe BlueSIt feels like forever since we featured a 370Z in the mag. We
honestly try every month to nd one thats sick enough to show
you. There have been plenty of stance examples and hardcore
track cars, but nding one with the best of both worlds is slim
to none. But we nally hit the jackpot once we discovered
Jonathan Sacketts matte blue beauty at SEMa last year.
Jonathan lives in Chicago and the majority of the work on
the Z was done by him and his buddies in his garage. The car
was shipped to The Rs Tuning before SEMa because there was
a small chance that his Z couldve landed a role in the next Fast
& Furious movie. No word yet on that, but Jonathan knew his
prized possession was in good hands and we couldnt let the car
go to waste in Southern California without a photoshoot.
Like the GT-R, the beauty of this car is that its driven on
the street and track while having a panty-droppin exterior.
The front fenders impressed us first. Inspired by the BenSopra
widebody kit, Jon had aNL autobody in his hometown
fabricate the beautiful pieces. We cut the fenders, drew the
lines out and rolled the extra piece in. The fins are made of
carbon-fiber. The rest is pretty much the stock aluminum fender
that we rolled in, explained Jon. For five weeks, we worked on
them and incorporated custom side skirts to match.
From there, wheels and brakes were picked out. I had
installed the StopTechs and then bought Enkei PF01s that
would clear the brakes, he continued. The offset made the
wheels stick out too much. Since we were doing all this body
work on the car, I thought why dont we just make everything
wider?

The Z went back to the body shop, as the front Stillen
bumper and the carbon-fiber amuse rear had to be widened.
The side skirts and rear quarter panels required more work to
flow with the wider setup while the vented front fenders were
also redone so the Enkeis could sit flush.
Just when Jonathan thought work was done to the body,
he had another brilliant idea for the rear. I was always a fan of
dual center-exit exhausts. Maybe because Im a huge Formula
One fan. So thats where the idea to put one started. The body
shop and I went and welded the custom v-band exhaust all the
way to the headers up through the center of the car. We did it without sacrificing
the rear fog lightthat also flashes when I brake like an F1 car, he mentioned. We
definitely dig the overall motorsport feel of Jons Z. Finally, complementing the bad-
ass exhaust setup was a custom duckbill spoiler installed on the rear hatch.
With the body complete, the car was painted its factory grey color, but of course
thats not what you see here. after seeing The Rs Tuning GT-R that was featured at
SEMa two years ago and also in the Fast & Furious 6 movie, Jonathan followed suit
and wrapped the car in the same matte blue.
Up to bat next was the chassis. Jon cared about every dollar spent and part
that went into his car so he wasnt going to put junk in his ride just because it was
GeT lUCkyNotice the stickers on Jonathans Z? He was inspired by the Rauh-Welt Porsches and how each RWB car has a theme and name behind it. It inspired Jon to name his own 370Z, and after a quick listen to Daft Punks hit song, it hit him! While were not sure if the car really gets Jonathan lucky, its denitely a cool phrase, so cool Jonathans even come out with his own clothing and stickers with the name. Hook us up with some shirts, bro!

sponsored or because everyone was using it. So Jon started
with the suspension installing Swift Spec R springs. Out of
the hundreds of reviews I read, they were the one spring that
focused on true performance. as for the brakes, I improved my
driving using the stock brakes, and then moved to pads, then
rotors and finally bigger brakes after getting to a threshold.
These StopTechs are amazing now!
at its current state, the Z is completely dialed-in without
going overboard or having maintenance issues. I have advanced
my driving with this car and didnt do too much at once. The car
would always be faster than my driving and I would build it more
once I got to a limit, then Id push myself further. When the time
is right, Ill continue to tune the suspension and engine more, he
concluded.
The Rs is already planning a more extravagant rollcage and
new steering column, but honestly we like how the car sits. Now
it can be driven day in and day out, plus it looks extremely unique
in the Nissan community. We hope itll inspire other Z33/Z34
owners to do their homework, think outside the box and build
show-stopping cars that arent afraid to be driven.

M eet Angelina Andrada! We knew we had to feature her after running into her at events all over SoCal last year. Shes one busy bee but weve nally tracked her down to bring you
these sexy photos. Angelina is possibly one of the most fun,
silly, enthusiastic and beautiful models to grace this magazine
so be sure to welcome her as a SS girl and remember to say
whats up to her on Instagram!
Tell us what you do for a living.
By day I calculate debits and credits working for a CPA; by
night Im jammin to DJs beats and keeping the crowd bumped
on the go-go boxes.
Youre a busy girl! So howd you get into modeling?
A couple of friends asked me to help out with some
photography projects in college. I really enjoyed it and it quickly
evolved into a hobby. I had no idea my little hobby would turn
into being published in Super Street magazine!
Yep, we make dreams happen here so tell us where
youre from.
Im born and raised in beautiful Orange County. Someday I
would love to venture off and see what the rest of the world
has to offer. But OC will always have my heart!
Whats your ethnicity and do you speak any other
languages?
My mother is full Filipina straight from the Philippines and my
father is Irish, German and Cherokee Indian from Illinois. So I
turned out a little Happa girl! I can understand a Filipino dialect
called Kapampangan.
Fair enough. Well keep this interview in English. Any
nicknames you go by?
My family calls me Gelinits always been that way since day
one. Some friends call me Smalls, because Im itty bitty but
most people just call me Angelina Bear.
Itty bitty? Oh, you mean your height! So in your bio it says
you were born on Christmas Eve?
Im a Christmas baby! Proud to say my parents brought me
home from the hospital in a giant stocking. My mother still
proudly displays it in her living room every winter!
Well, Merry Christmas to us! Any special skills we should
know about?
I make a mean homemade ice cream sandwich! Dont ask me
how though. Top secret recipe If I told you Id have to kill you!
Did someone say cream sandwich? So what other hobbies
do you have besides modeling?
Well, I love souvenirs. Anywhere I go I need to get something,
even if its just a lame shot glass. Its sort of a tradition I have.
Speaking of shot glasses. Can we get you a drink?
Sure! Im always ready to party with a double shot of peach
Ciroc and a pineapple chaser!

Punctuality. I hate to say it but Im notorious for being late. I shoot a
text saying Im on the way but in reality Im still at home trying to figure
out what shoes to wear.
Think thats true with all girls What do you do when you have
free time to kill?
Ill go for a ride on my cruiser or skateboard and enjoy a simple day at
the beach.
OK, OK... Whats your biggest guilty pleasure?
Chili cheese fry burritos. One day, my best friend and I went drive-thru
hopping to find out which fast food place served the best chili cheese fry
burrito. Best day of my life! [Disgusting MJ]
Sounds kind of gross. Have any girl crushes?
Of course! The beautiful Mila Kunis and Kristin Kreukthat actress that
plays Lana Lang in Smallville. Theyre both amazingly gorgeous!
What cars have you owned and what would be your dream car?
My first car was a little red '97 Toyota Tercel that my girlfriends called
Baby Clifford. I now own a '13 Honda Accord which hasnt been blessed
with a name yet. But my dream car is a pearl white Lexus IS F. Someday,
someday
So if you had 24 hours to live, what would you do?
I would spend time with my family and the friends I love. Then probably
go buy a puppy since Ive never had one before.
Lastly, give us three fun facts about you.
I love to skateboard, I took first place in my NPC Bikini Fitness
Competition and I have intense road rage.

anything is never easy. Doing so with a car that isnt native to the region
and whose tuning masses are every bit as unfamiliar with it as you think
they are doesnt help. Still, settling upon Nissans R32 chassis was the
obvious choice for Keresztesi: The R32 is the most famous Skyline, he
assures. It won all 29 races in the Japanese Group a Championship. The
machine is a legend.

to nail the dyno needle at exactly 1,250hp. arriving at such an irrational
amount of combustion didnt happen without expense or grief, though.
Early on, mechanical failures presented themselves at the drag strip,
which ultimately led to what would prove to be a fortuitous

people at Pro Import Motorsports. Its true that only six
Skylines call the country of austria homeonly two of which
are R32sbut no other Western European tuning house knows
the iconic platform better than them. The whole weekend we
spent together sharing thoughts on the car, Keresztesi says of
that first meeting. I realized these were the guys to bring my
R32 to.
Keresztesis initial plan was every bit as simple as it was
naive: to be the countrys quickest car on weekends and,
during the week, do things like pick up aunt Beatrice from
the dermatologist. It didnt take long for Keresztesi to see the
absurdity in all of that, and he soon appointed the Skyline
which hed later name El Toroas his dedicated track car. In
his words: all restrictions were gone. The car [was going] to
be mental.
It just so happens that Hollands Pro Import Motorsports
specializes in mental and soon put Keresztesi on the path
toward horsepower in excess of what any level-headed person
needs. It all starts not with the R32s standard-issue RB25DET
but with the larger-displacement and older RB30E engine
block. Even more cubic inches were wrung out of the 3.0L
engine with the help of a Nitto 3.2L stroker assembly. Boost is
made possible with a single, albeit large, Garrett GTX42 turbo
that helps generate more than 1,050 lb-ft of torque without
nitrous oxide. None of that means that Keresztesi has any

Following an initial and less-than-gratifying trip to the drag strip, El Toro was quickly dissected and committed to full-time track duty. After arriving at Pro Import Motorsports, the engine and drivetrain were removed, the chassis was stripped, and the custom, FIA-approved rollcage was cut, bent, and tted into place. Shortly thereafter, the R32 was prepared for paint and the one-off orange hue was applied. Meanwhile, the RB30E engine was being rebuilt to handle whatever the large-frame Garrett turbo could potentially yield. Forged pistons and rods along with all necessary machining make up the bottom end. Up top, a combination of Supertech and JUN valvetrain work in tandem with JUN camshafts and a cylinder head thats been thoroughly reworked at the hands of Pro Import Motorsports. A Haltech engine management system is responsible for appropriate ignition and fuel control, the latter of which is delivered by 2,000 cc/min. Injector Dynamics fuel injectors and a high-ow Weldon fuel pump. Before placing the engine in the chassis, a six-speed sequential gearbox was bolted up along with a unique, OS Giken four-disc clutch. Ancillary details followed, like tting the para-chute into place along with interior bits and any instrumentation before visiting the dyno where the engine was broken in and nally tuned to the note of 1,250hp. Sounds easy, doesnt it?
reservations against chemical horsepower, though; a 150hp-
shot of nitrous remains on tap in the event 1,400hp is ever
needed. It all sounds like a small explosion waiting to happen,
but Keresztesi assures that the engine is sound up to 1,800hp.
The drivetrain, however, has its own limitations.
Right about now is when wed normally tell you about the
engine that Keresztesi blew to smithereens or the body shop
that swindled him out of a deposit, but in his case, there is no
such story. as it turns out, assembling this 1,250hp GT-R was
about as uneventful and full of as many surprises as the time
you rotated the tires on your mothers LeSabre. Keresztesi
credits Pro Import Motorsports for that. Everything went
smoothly, he says. The only change of plan was when the
1,100hp barrier was broken on the dyno, the tuner went [past]
1,200hp.
Blasted tuner.
Speaking of tuners, Keresztesis relationship with Pro
Import Motorsports is the stuff automotive fairly tales are
made of. From the JUN head package to the FIa-approved
rollcage to the customized Plasma Products ignition system,
the Hollander tuning house handled every detail. all was taken
care of by the tuner, but they were in very close [contact] with
me, Keresztesi says.
I have my dream car now, Keresztesi admits. I always
wanted to have this kind of high-performance car. It had to be
Godzilla, and now I have it. all thats left now is making good
on that whole quickest-car-in-austria bit.

Were a bit jealous of Australians. One: they get to see kangaroos all day. Two: Nissan
sold the Skyline there. If youre like us, a Skyline is easily one of the top cars wed have
in our dream garage. Forget a Bugattiwell take a Skyline! Its pretty standard for most
enthusiasts here in the States to simply want any generation of Skyline solely because they
were never sold here. We always want what we cant have! But quite honestly, its not just us. The car is
still one of the most coveted cars in countries that sell themjust like our feature car here from Down
Under. David Lai from Thirroul (about an hour south of Sydney) could have bought any car he wanted but
he knew nothing compared to the BNR34, that last generation of the Skyline GT-R. While the cars over a
decade old, it still performs and looks better than most sports cars sold today. Just goes to show, Nissan
hit a home run with this car and for fanatics like David, it was a no-brainer when he had the opportunity
to pick up this twin-turbo beauty.

The amount of street presence the BNR34 embodies when it rolls up on the street
is phenomenal, he told us. Doesnt matter if its stock or rocking a full Z-tune kit,
people will always turn their heads, stare and admire its beauty. It also has the power
to back up its fierce look and an incredible all-wheel drive system underneath which
I believe makes it the ultimate JDM car to date. Strong words from an enthusiast
whos had his fair share of project cars. In his teenage years, David built a Honda
Integra Type R DC5 (another car we never got!), an aP1 S2000 and a V-Spec R34.
This purple GT-R is his second R34 (lucky bastard!), but thats just how awesome
these cars are. So for his second build, David decided he wanted the right combination
of form and function. The objective was make it the ultimate GT-R rolling on the
streets of australia which could turn heads, hit the track with no worries and have a
good amount of power to scare my passengers.
By all means, the Skyline is already a rocket out of the box but if David was going
to build his ultimate GT-R, he needed more power. F&E autowerks became his new
best friend as they took care of everything from the cars maintenance, to the majority
of the install work and dialing in the chassis for the track.
David started his journey by upgrading the engine first. Keeping the RB26s
twin-turbo configuration, the turbos were upgraded to larger Garrett GT2860-5s.
The entire exhaust system uses legit pieces from Mines Japan while the cams
were updated with a more aggressive version from Tomei. aRC, GReddy and Nismo
parts were thrown into the mix for better cooling and more fuel. Its pretty much
JDM heaven under the hood! While it doesnt sport a built motor and single-turbo
conversion like some powerhouses weve seen, Davids R34 was tuned to a reliable
460hpmore than plenty of power for a street car.
interior is pretty basic in Davids car but after our photoshoot, hes stepped up to recaro asm Limited seats.

WeekenD WArriorNot just a pretty GT-R, Davids pushes the limits of his R34 on the track!
My rst track experience was at Winton Raceway in Victoria700km drive from where I live. I drove my GT-R down with my brother the night before the track day. Since this was my rst time, I used the rst session to cruise, learn the lines and see how the car behaved
whilst setting the car to low boost, 13psi, to take it easy. The next session I pushed it harder whilst still holding back at 6000rpm to set down a base time. But pulling into the pits, I noticed the car was smoking from the turbo side! It was blowing smoke like no
tomorrow. Major blow-by gases occurred in the intake system and leaked onto the turbos, which caused the smoke. I went out again for the third session to do a few laps and return to the pits to check if everything went ne and unfortunately, it did not. The car blew so much smoke as if it looked like it was about to catch on re, so I had to call it a day. I travelled a long way to do only two
and half sessions but it was well worth it! Before my next track day, we installed a Nismo oil air separator to help take care of the blow-by gas problem. The car was ready to go to Wakeeld Park this time, a two-hour drive from
where I live. On race day, the car performed superbly! No issues had occurred and the car was continuously doing hot laps. On the third session, the car experienced a big exhaust leak
due to hitting the front pipe on one of the rumble strips, which caused the turbo gasket to blow. So I called it a day after that incident. Even
though I didnt get many sessions in, I knew the car was running ne and have gured out what needs
to be done before my next race! David Lai

David didnt smudge on the chassis upgrades either. a Nismo R-tune suspension
was modified with stiffer 16 kg/mm spring rates. Nismo sway bars reduce any body
roll left in the chassis. Since the car comes factory with awesome Brembos, the
brakes received Project Mu rotors and padsa good option for a balance of track
performance and daily driving. as for rollers, pictured here are Davids SSR SP3s.
Theyve been painted light bronzea nice complement to the purple exterior. But like
any wheel whore, Davids got two more sets of wheels. a spare set of Volk Racing
CE28 sits at home in his garage while for the track, he rolls out 18x11" Volk Racing
TE37 Super Lap edition wheels with Hankook slicks. Having these two setups can
please the stance crowd and track lovers! he admitted.
The exterior is perhaps our favorite part of Davids GT-R. Its absolutely
breathtaking. The color alone sets the car apart from any other R34 and its a factory
color, too! available specifically for R34 GT-Rs, less than 200 cars were offered
in Midnight Purple III. David added his personal touch with Nismo goodies which
included the Z-tune front bumper, side skirts and rear pods. a Top Secret carbon-
fiber front splitter was added to make the nose more aggressive, while Craft Square
mirrors and a Voltex Type 5 wing give it a motorsport-feel.
There isnt a whole lot of aftermarket parts or custom work but thats the beauty
of Davids R34. Everything done to his GT-R was carefully thought out. Theres no
unnecessary junk, nothing is gaudy and its more than reliable enough to drive every
day or take it to the track whenever he wants. yes, were still jealous we cant have
this car over here in the States but we gotta give David props for showing us how its
done Down Under.
might look like a custom paint job but this is oe nissan midnight Purple iii, a specific color for the r34 gt-r.

Variable ValVe Timing, The nissan Way
Somewhere theres a perfect
balance between peak
horsepower, low-speed
response, reduced emissions,
and something you can afford. Variable
valve timing and lift have done their part in
getting us all closer to that. Nothing affects
an engines behavior more than its cam profile.
On otherwise equal engines, for example,
something as singular as a cam change can
turn an otherwise low-RPM brute into a
hyperactive, high-revving dickens. But not both.
Before variable valve timing, compromises
had to made, and almost always sacrificed the
torque for the high-RPM high jinks until an
acceptable compromise between the two could
be achieved.
Twenty-five years ago, variable valve
timing was considered exotic technology.
Today, almost every automaker uses it on even
their most entry level of econo-buckets. and
although Honda evangelists might have you
believe that VTEC is the first and last word
on the matter, the engineers at Nissan have
been dabbling in the technology responsible for
dynamically altering valve events for just as
long and with just as many iterations.
VCTIt all started in 1987 with Nissans Variable
Camshaft Timingthe VCT namesakewhich
dynamically adjusts cam timing throughout the
powerband but has since been entirely phased
out. Right about now you might be thinking
that 1987 happened a whole two years before
1989, which is when Honda introduced VTEC
on its second-generation Integra. Trouble
is, Nissan didnt necessarily promote its
whole variable cam phasing architecture as
effectively as Honda did with its, which makes
forgetting the fact that it came first forgivable
and easy to do.
also known as NVCS (Nissan Valve Timing
Control System) in some circles, here, duly
equipped cams can be advanced or retarded
relative to their gears. It begins with the ECU
telling an electric solenoid to turn on, which
directs a high-pressure oil stream through
the cam and into a slave mechanism that
ultimately changes the relationship between
