UNAVCO is supported by NASA to handle data management and web site presentation for the Geohazards Supersites/Natural Laboratories. UNAVCO also has support from NASA for LiDAR and SAR seamless archives.

Fostering International Data Sharing:Geohazards Supersites/Natural Laboratories

SAR and other remote sensing data are contributed by Space Agencies and UNAVCO and IRIS index available Earth science data in the GEO-sponsored Geohazards Supersites / Natural Laboratories.

Supersites has been highly successful as a data and results sharing mechanism for the catastrophic Haiti Earthquake, Chile Earthquake, and Tohoku-Oki Earthquake and Tsunami. In addition to Space Agency-contributed SAR, scientists post early analyses and results on Supersites Event pages.

CurrentGeohazards Supersites/Natural Laboratories

Current GSNL website provides simple links to resources, no federated queries capability. Each website provides unique data search and access tools.

Proposed data plan provides “Seamless” access including:

- Simple RESTful APIs at each repository to query and access local holdings in a consistent manner

- Similar API for federated query and access from multiple repositories with aggregated responses

- Access to multiple domains (e.g. Geodetic Data, SAR, Seismic and other collections

- Possible Federated Data Viewer that is web services-enabled

Geodesy Seamless Archive Centers – GSAC

Funding from the NASA ROSES ACCESS Program is allowing UNAVCO, SOPAC, CDDIS, and the University of Nevada, Reno to partner in developing a web services enabled GSAC. The web services are built upon simple RESTful web services (Google wiki restful web services).

CDDIS - GSAC

The NASA CDDIS has implemented the GSAC API for their primary database search capability.

Federated Search with the Geodesy Seamless Archive Centers

The GSAC Service Layer (GSL) provides consistent results from single repositories. It also facilitates federated search capability returning for example all data available from multiple repositories for a given area for a given range of dates. Other repositories can be relatively easily added to the federated GSL.

GSAC Service Layer – ‘GSL’

Federated Repository Utilizes Multiple Instances of the GSL

Federated Search with the Geodesy Seamless Archive Centers

The GSAC Service Layer (GSL) facilitates federated search capability returning for example all data available from all three repositories for a given area for a given range of dates. At the moment the federated GSL is hosted only at UNAVCO but others can implement it for their own projects (e.g. Supersites and EPOS). GSAC repositories can participate in multiple federated services.

New developments with RING network in Italy

UNAVCO is working with INGV on a demonstration of GSAC for RING. The GSAC Java-based software package is openly available on SourceForge and has been tailored for the RING implementation for this demonstration. Plans are underway to install at other archives.

Draft Data Plan – Integrate access to multiple data types.

Ground Geodetic Data from GSAC

Seismic API from federated “COOPEUS” archives

SAR data from ASF, UNAVCO and space agencies (via SSARA API is proposed)

Draft Data Plan – Demonstrated Multidata Query Interface

Federated, Integrated query of GSAC, IRIS, and SSARA web services for Hawaii. The queries are on the fly to each archive/repository and aggregated for display and data access. A tool like this could be developed for Supersites.
