INTRODUCTION

Microsoft has revamped its Windows Server-based software-defined storage (SDS) offerings to address the need of lower-cost, cloud-scale software-defined data center scenarios. Storage Spaces Direct (S2D), a new feature in Windows Server 2016, allows rapid provision of highly available and scalable SDS deployments with industry-standard servers using direct attached storage. S2D offers two deployment scenarios, namely hyper-converged and converged. Both aim to dramatically simplify IT infrastructure deployment and lower acquisition costs, while providing high scalability and flexibility, and uncompromised performance and efficiency. Therefore, S2D is considered by Microsoft a direct replacement of traditional expensive SAN infrastructure.

Microsoft Storage Spaces Direct is designed from the ground up to take advantage of cutting-edge storage technologies including NVMe NAND flash, and able to dynamically adapt for mixed operations with SSD/HDD with legacy SAS and SATA interfaces. Supermicro's latest server platforms are a perfect match to complement the flexibility and scalability offered by S2D with hot-swappable NVMe, SAS3 and SATA3 hybrid interfaces, so that the most cost and performance-optimized solutions can be customized and deployed at a scale.

Scope

This whitepaper introduces Supermicro's reference architecture 2U 2028TP-S2D, which is one of the several Windows Server based HCI offerings currently available from Supermicro. The article describes high level overview of the solution, the main features and performance the 2U 2028TP-S2D can deliver, and its hardware specifications. However, the whitepaper is mainly focused on the building block itself and does not cover other infrastructure considerations, such as the detailed deployment consideration for different customer infrastructure environments, as well as various management services considerations.

SOLUTION OVERVIEW

Supermicro 2U form factor HCI solution (SKU: SYS-2028TP-S2D) is a very high density, NVMe + SAS/SATA, Windows Server based software-defined infrastructure, designed for high performance computing application workloads.

It is composed of a cluster of 2U TwinPro™ SYS-2028TP-DNCTR, 2 Nodes per System, servers (supporting 2 to 16 server nodes), RDMA enabled NICs installed on each node, high bandwidth TOR switch, along with the software-defined features that are built in Windows Server 2016 Datacenter edition.

Supermicro 2U TwinPro™ HCI solution is designed for the hyper-converged deployment scenario. In this scenario, multiple server nodes are combined in the same cluster so that both compute (Hyper-V) and storage (S2D) components scale out together. When to expand, additional server nodes are added to increase the compute power, networking performance, and storage performance and capacity all the same time. Supermicro 2U TwinPro™ HCI solution supports scaling from minimum 2 server nodes up to 16 nodes.

In the HCI configuration, S2D integrates well with other Windows Server built-in features, including Clustered Shared Volume File System (CSVFS), Storage Spaces, Failover Clustering, Hyper-V, and SMB direct, to compose a Windows Server based software defined storage stack. Below Figure 1 demonstrates a 2U TwinPro™ HCI 4 nodes architecture.

KEY SOFTWARE-DEFINED FEATURES

The 2U TwinPro™ HCI is a highly virtualized solution. Some of the key software-defined features include software-defined compute (Hyper-V), software-defined storage (S2D), software-defined networking (SDN), as well as extra assurance to the stack, which makes it a comprehensive software-defined datacenter in a box. Below table 1 lists the main Software-Defined features the Supermicro HCI solution offers.

MICROSOFT SDDC CERTIFICATION AND PERFORMANCE TEST

The 2U TwinPro™ HCI 4 nodes reference architecture has been certified for SDDC Premium for running as a premium software-defined datacenter. The certification not only validates day-to-day operation on the 4 node cluster, but also requires all the key components, including NIC, drives, HBA, and servers, to pass SDDC premium tests respectively.

The 4 nodes solution also delivers excellent storage performance. It achieved 1 million IOPS when we performed 4K 100% random reads using Microsoft diskspd/VM Fleet test tool.

performance, with the support of Intel® Xeon® processor E5-2600 v4 product family and NVMe capability.

The TwinPro™ is the most versatile server for today’s datacenter. And Supermicro 2U SYS-2028TP-DNCTR is the 2U server on the market that can accommodate up to 4 NVMe SSD drives. Figure 4 shows the front view of SYS-2028TP-DNCTR.

Processor

The Intel® Xeon® processor E5-2600 v4 product family is designed for better utilizing resources and enabling optimal performance across compute, storage and network workloads. It has the best fit for optimized cloud deployment for software-defined enterprise data centers.

The reference architecture uses two Intel® Xeon® processor E5-2690 v4 with 14 cores, 35 MB Smart Cache, 2.6 GHz, 9.6 GT/s Intel® QPI.

Memory

128GB DDR4-2133 Memory are installed on each node that meets the requirement of a Hyper-converged deployment and delivers the best memory performance for both the operating system as well as the S2D cache.

Storage

Windows Server 2016 S2D requires two types of storage devices, including caching devices and capacity devices. Specifically in the 2U TwinPro™ reference architecture, the caching devices are used to deliver high write performance and reduce and wear of the capacity drives.

• Caching devices 3x 800GB Intel SSD DC P3700 (NVMe) are used as caching devices for providing high durance and high write performance.

• Capacity devices 6x 2TB Seagate 2.5" 2TB 3.0 6GB/s (SATA) are served as capacity devices that offers high capacity and great read performance.

In addition to the caching and capacity devices, a 400GB Intel SATA SSD DC S3710 is installed on each node as the Boot device. It provides large enough capacity for supporting kernel memory dumps to help analyze issues. Figure 5 shows the overall storage layout of 2U TwinPro™ server.

Networking

Network is one of the key elements of the S2D architecture, and high efficient and reliable network is critical to the performance of S2D HCI. We have selected 25 Gbps Ethernet network interface cards with Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA) enabled, along with high performance 100G Mellanox switch for the 2U TwinPro™ HCI reference architecture for delivering the high performance of S2D.

• Network adapters The Supermicro AOC-S25G-m2S 25GbE is a high performance network adapter that is built on Mellanox ConnectX®-4 Lx EN chipset. It comes with dual SPF28 ports, and supports the RoCE v2 specification with CPU offload, delivering high-performance and low-latency over Ethernet. In the reference architecture, one dual port NIC is installed on each server node.

• TOR Switch Mellanox SN2700 32-port 100GbE Ethernet switch is a predictable, high density top-of-rack (ToR) solution that enables full rack connectivity to servers at any speed.

Note: The diagram does not include BMC network that connect the BMC ports with a different switch.

The switch provides Enhanced Traffic Selection (ETS) 802.1Qaz, Priority Based Flow Control (PFC) (802.1p/Q and 802.1Qbb), therefore fully supports RoCE capable NICs and S2D HCI solution.

• Switch-to-Node Cabling The 2U TwinPro™ HCI solution adopts the network configuration of one switch connecting to multiple connections per server for great network resiliency and performance. Figure 6 shows the cabling diagram.

SECURITY

Windows Server 2016 introduced new security features, including Credential Guard and Device Guard, for protecting physical machines and virtual machines. In addition, Shielded VMs are used to protect virtual machines from a compromised host. To support the new features, each 1U Ultra server node is equipped with a TPM 2.0 module, with upgraded firmware that fully meets all SDDC requirements. The BIOS is pre-configured and optimized for deploying a secured hyper-converged solution out-of-the-box.
