STUDENTSIn June 2009, students in the University of Southern California Rossier School of Education’s online Master of Arts in Teaching program began classes. These 122 students were the first to experience a master’s degree program supported by 2U technology. Through their partnership, 2U and USC Rossier sought to deliver teacher education online while working with students around the country to offer them field experience in schools in their own communities. It was unlike any other learning experience, and students in that first MAT cohort were resoundingly successful.

Soon, it wasn’t just educators benefiting from 2U-enabled education. By 2011, 2U expanded its offerings through partnerships with the Georgetown School of Nursing & Health Studies and the UNC Chapel Hill Kenan-Flagler Business School, whose MBA program boasted a 100% retention rate for its first cohort.

As of December 31, 2013, more than 8,500 students have enrolled in 2U partner programs.

2U is working with colleges and universities to allow students around the country live their dreams of becoming Trojans, Hoyas, or Tar Heels, all without sacrificing their personal or professional commitments. Students are able to work with 2U placement teams to complete program-required field education close to home, making a difference in their own communities.Students in 2U partner programs live in 50 states and 62 countries, which means 2U is having a global impact on professionals and contributing to their success. These students are attending some of the world’s best graduate degree programs, advancing their careers and changing their own lives — and they are doing it online with 2U technology.

STUDENT PROFILE: BUSINESS, D’Andre Payne“While working at Pfizer, one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world, I became interested in why certain business decisions were made and the overall impact they had on the company. I really liked that MBA@UNC was an innovative new program that was online, but not your

typical online program. The live classes and the immersions really made it different. The fact that we had live classes every week was a big selling point

to me. It gave me the opportunity to interact and connect with my professors and fellow students.” > Click D’Andre’s picture to hear more about his experience.

“I think Berkeley’s practical and holistic approach to solving big data problems will provide a critical basis for me to tackle the most important issues facing data science within the context of global development and crisis relief.

“In a single day, I can fulfill my duties at the Air Force base, discuss current events in data privacy during my live Master of Information and Data Science (MIDS) sessions, and then walk to the weekly Code for America hack session.

“MIDS allows me to extend my understanding of data science academically at Berkeley while continuing my endeavors in Boston. Rather than putting my academic ambitions on hold, I can multitask like a true ‘product of the 21st century’ and simultaneously pursue both a graduate degree and career experience.”

“As an older adult who decided to go back to school, I wanted to pursue higher education in a graduate school from a well-known university like USC. While maintaining my day job, I found an opportunity to do the course online. I felt as though 10 years in the corporate world was great but I also felt like I wanted to do something more fulfilling and impactful. I think this degree was the perfect fit for me.” > Click Leslie’s photo to hear more about her experiences.

Faculty members teaching 2U partner programs are key to the student experience.

Classes are live and online, so teaching faculty can fully engage with students through discussion and collaboration. Faculty can also hold office hours in the online classroom.

With a 2U content and production crew on hand, faculty create new content that brings their lessons to life. For example, the MSW@USC program produces documentary- style videos that allow students to visually experience a client’s full range of emotions, which makes learning more tangible and accessible.

FACULTY

“I have never felt a more personal connection with students in any

classroom, even in smaller seminar courses. The reason is that there’s

no hiding…you see every facial twitch of everyone in the class.

Everyone is right there.”

“One of our deepest fears was that the experience of teaching online would be impersonal. After all, many of us got in to teaching because of the opportunity to build relationships that might make a difference. A great surprise, then, was how quickly and easily we got to know our students. Because the platform included a social networking function, with individual profiles and walls à la Facebook, we were able to read about our students’ interests, favorite books, and so forth before class began, and connect with them. The more we shared about our own interests, the more we reached out to our students, the more they responded in kind, eager to get to know us, each other, and the university. When commencement arrived, it was delightful to watch students who had become fast friends, gleefully meet each other face to face for the first time. This lesson was perhaps the most heartwarming of all — not only could the technology help us facilitate learning in a mechanical way, but it could also help us build the relationships that are so critical to effective instruction.”

CLASSROOM EXPERIENCE

MORE THAN

The programs 2U supports feature live, online classes that are grounded in group discussion and collaborative conversation. The programs are online, but they are not like any other online learning experience. Class sessions are held on a live video platform and are led by university faculty members. All classes are intentionally kept small — an average of 10.4 students — to facilitate close collaboration and engaging discussions.

In order to facilitate robust class discussions, students engage in immersive course content between

live classes. From documentary-style lessons to video case studies to interactive learning tools, course content is designed to raise questions, describe theories and inspire ideas for later discussion.

Much of the coursework is viewed in video format. With video, professors can create vignettes for students to consider for the next live class or develop stories and cases that develop across an entire semester.

2U-enabled classrooms are busy. With more than 1,086 total course sections, 183 total courses taught, and 1,629 hours of live instruction per week*, 2U works to ensure that each course starts without a hitch.

2U’s technical support team is available to both faculty and students during live class sessions. During each class, supportadvisors are at the ready, prepared to help with individual connection

problems or disruptions on the online platform. Students are located all over the world, including some pretty extreme locations — an oil rig in the Gulfof Mexico, an aircraft carrier and a village in rural Afghanistan — and 2U’s tech team ensures that they can continue to attend classes and access coursework.

ONLINE CAMPUS

2U’s Online Campus is an innovative, online platform that fosters collaboration and facilitates real connections. Similar to familiar social networking tools, the Online Campus allows students and faculty members to create personal profiles. With these profiles, they can begin getting to know each other from day one, forging relationships before they even enter the classroom.

2U’s content development and tech teams work together with university faculty and staff to create innovative, multimedia coursework.

One such tool is the Bi-directional Learning Tool (BLTTM) and it’s a revolutionary way to consume online course materials. Unlike any other kind of online learning tool, the BLT allows students to actually engage with content, gain new knowledge and receive feedback. Professors build out BLT content and can then watch students’ progress through the materials and leave comments leading up to the live class session.

> Click the play button to hear Ian Van Tuyl, 2U’s chief content officer, explain the full functionality of the BLT in this video.

Through the Online Campus, students and faculty also have access to the learning platform inside and outside of scheduled class times. The online environment acts as a gathering spot, a place where they can

meet for small group projects and online office hours. Designed with connection and collaboration in mind, the Online Campus brings students and faculty together to forge relationships that will last a lifetime.

BEYOND THE CLASSROOM

Practice-based learning is a cornerstone of every program. From nursing field experiences to data science summer immersions, all programs have a real-life, in-person learning component.

Field Placements*2U is proud to partner with more than 9,800 placement sites with 15,553 successful placements, as of December 31, 2013. Students complete more than 3 million hours of field training, and approximately 18 percent of students are eventually employed by their placement entities.

Field education is extremely important for social work students, and those enrolled in our partners’ programs are required to complete a minimum amount of hours in the field, which can range from approximately 700 to more than 1,000 depending on the program. The 2U field placement team works with students to find them a community-based placement, allowing them to complete the requirement in a setting close to home.

PRACTICE-BASED LEARNING

“I’m very passionate about seeing change in the lives of people, particularly African Americans, especially in my community. In my

neighborhood in the south side of Chicago there’s a lot of crime, a lot of poverty, a lot of people who don’t necessarily have hope. There’s a sense of learned hopelessness that I feel can be combated if there are positive role models. Sometimes parents aren’t there, teachers are overworked and there needs to be a third party to activate resources

for these people.

“I‘ve seen so many of my friends go down the wrong path and I’ve witnessed the outcomes of their decisions. That alone is inspiration for me to want to help. I think this degree will provide the platform for me to help in a real, professional way.” > Click Jabari’s picture to hear him explain his decision to go into social work.

PRACTICUM EXPERIENCES

In other 2U partner programs, students complete work-experience practicums. In these courses, students find work placement in their communities — current jobs are considered — and work to sort through a problem or challenge. In the research portion of the practicum, students write the equivalent of a master’s thesis explaining how their education has prepared them to address and tackle the real-world challenges facing the organization.

GLOBAL IMMERSIONS

MBA@UNC students attend at least two required immersions in cities around the world, offering them the opportunity to meet their online classmates in person. At immersions, students delve into a topic relevant to the location. Global immersions have been held in major business centers around the world, including Istanbul, New York City, San Francisco, Singapore, London and São Paolo.

MBA@UNC students met in Singapore for the global immersion weekend titled “Dragons, Elephants and Tigers: The (Re-) Growth of the Asian Business Landscape in the 21st Century.” The event focused on enhancing students’ understanding of how to succeed in today’s globally connected business market, and provided hands-on interaction with UNC Kenan-Flagler professors, industry leaders, and fellow classmates.

Page 21: 2U Impact Report

“We were all surprised by the challenging nature of the program. We worked much harder than we ever expected, but looking back, I’m thrilled because I know that my degree is absolutely top-notch.

“I’ve got a demanding job, and I lost my father during the first year of the program and my grandfather six months later. So I had to go to my professors on several occasions to say, ‘I’m drowning here. How can you help me? Can I reschedule these exams? Can I turn in this project at this time?’

“Without question, at these moments it was the most supportive and cooperative program I could imagine being a part of. It made me want to work harder. I wanted to do well because they had been so supportive during difficult times. The flexible nature of the program also allows me to be an active part of the UNC community wherever I am. I’ve gone to class in airports. I’ve gone to class in my car. You can’t do that with a program that’s traditional brick-and-mortar.”

Students in the Nursing@Georgetown program travel to

Washington, D.C., for an on-campus intensive. During these

sessions, students practice their learning in Georgetown University’s state-of-the-art

O’Neill Family Foundation Clinical Simulation Center.

This enables students to gain confidence in their skills

before beginning their clinical placement requirement.

STUDENT PROFILE: BUSINESS, Candice Brown

“MPH@GW is absolutely the best option for me to get my MPH. First, the quality of the program is impressive, the curriculum is rigorous, and the faculty are leaders in the field. Another reason why I chose MPH@GW is that it is designed for working professionals. I have a full-time career and am the mother of a young daughter, so it would be difficult for me to attend a traditionally structured program.

“Finally, George Washington University is located in my community. Even though I could attend the campus-based program, I chose MPH@GW because the technology makes this program a realistic option for students who are balancing school with other responsibilities. I have a career and a family, and I want to get my MPH online, but I am not willing to sacrifice quality — MPH@GW makes that possible!”

CONCLUSIONUNPRECEDENTED CHANGE

The world’s higher education industry is experiencing unprecedented change. Technology and online learning in particular, is reshaping how institutions deliver and how individuals access education. With the rise in rates of Internet penetration, mobile devices and cloud-based services, universities and colleges everywhere are determining how to incorporate technology-enabled offerings into their long-term strategies.

Since 2008, 2U partner institutions have impacted more than 8,500 aspiring teachers, social workers,

entrepreneurs, nurses, public administrators, public health professionals, data scientists, and other professionals who are looking to further their careers. These students are in turn impacting businesses, social work agencies, hospitals, schools and other institutions in their local communities all over the world.

With the support of 2U, leading non-profit universities and colleges are furthering their missions and disseminating knowledge to more students than ever before.
