Principal’s Report continuedSuper Senior ConcertOur Senior Concert was held at the West Gippsland Arts Centre last Thursday 18th August with a theme of ‘Time Travel’. Each class supported and assisted by Mrs Legg during their weekly Performing Arts lessons had developed their performance working as a team. Elements such as choreography, dance, music, voice production and stage presence had been used to develop skills and finalise each class item. The culmination of all those efforts was a highly entertaining concert.

Well done to our Warragul North Primary School staff who are an amazing group of people who work together to prepare and present our concerts. However the concert co-ordinator, Karen Dellar, ably supported by assistant concert co-ordinator, Chrissie Heseltine, must be acknowledged for all her hard work and the hours of time she puts into organising the concert. A huge job – well done Karen!

Also a B-I-G, huge thank you and well done to Sue Legg, our Performing Arts Teacher, for working with all Year Three to Year Six classes to plan, develop and rehearse each item. Mrs Legg is a very talented Performing Arts teacher who has developed a wonderful rapport with her students. Consequently she was responsible for the fantastic concert.

Thank you to the audience for being so supportive of our young performers. Thank you for coming along and making concerts at the arts centre possible.

The definition of numeracy states that a numerate person should understand the ways mathematics can be used for communication, and this requires the possession of two attributes

1. being ’at-ease’ with all those aspects of mathematics that enable a person to cope with the practical demands of everyday life.

2. the ability to understand information presented in mathematical terms.

Students become numerate as they develop the knowledge and skills to use mathematics confidently at school and in their daily lives. Numeracy involves students recognising and understanding the role of mathematics in the world and having the dispositions and capacities to use mathematical knowledge and skills purposefully.

In a ‘nutshell’ Numeracy means the ability to use mathematical knowledge in a range of situations.

Student reflections from 4TH...Breaking news! Year Three to Six have just had their exciting and exhausting concert at the magnificent and wonderful Arts Centre. The marvellous crowd went wild while grade 4TH was doing their terrific performance. By Logan

Crash! “That’s the end of an era.” Remy said, calmly walking off the stage. There was an ear-busting sound of claps echoing around the room. The concert was a fabulous masterpiece. The crowd was entertained more than a lion with an endless supply of food. Just a few more busting minutes to go I told myself. “Batman, take 56, scene 2!” Bailey the director shouted. “ACTION!” Jack boomed nervously. Reeve, The Joker, sneaked on like a ballistic bat with a few of his other villain friends. EEEEERRRRR!!! Super heroes started to swarm the hard, black stage with strange poses. By Reeve

The crowd went wild on the 18th of August when all the super heroes and super villians came on the stage, well mainly when Batman came on but it was AWESOME! SPECTACULAR!! And really, REALLY CRAZY too. Not to be mean but I thought it was the best one; I love it. There was Batman, The Joker, two Batgirls, Poison Ivy, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern and Zero. Like I said it was SPECTACULAR!! Oh and all the other acts as well; the concert was AWESOME!!! The teachers loved it, mainly the Principal, Ms Collins. Ms Collins loved it so much that she gave us ten more minutes of play the next day. By Jemma

Humming Along... Thoughts from the ChaplainLet’s talk about mental health for a moment. Living with stress seems to be just the way things are these days, and it seems that stress is affecting younger and younger children. The long term effect of stress and ongoing anxiety is troubling – including physical health issues and escalating mental health issues. Promoting good mental health in your family unit is a great way to build resilience and good life-long habits in your children.

Here are 5 ways to promote good mental health and wellbeing in kids:

1. Model good mental health habits. If you live constantly with stress then consider modelling the following habits, as well as implementing them with your children. Kids learn what they live, so make sure they see good mental health habits first hand.

2. Make sure they get enough sleep. Sleep is the one of the building blocks of mental health and wellbeing. Many children, most teenagers, and many parents are sleep-deprived. Children need 10-12 hours sleep to enable proper growth and development, while teenagers need a minimum 9 hours. One of the most powerful strategies to improve kids’ abilities to cope with stressful or changing situations is to ensure they get enough sleep.

3. Encourage your kids to exercise. When Mum would tell me put my book down for just ten minutes and go outside and play, she didn’t know she was promoting good mental health. She just knew that physical activity was a good thing for an active growing girl. Kids today get less exercise than those of past generations, which is an impediment to mental health. Exercise stimulates the chemicals that improve mood and release the stress that builds up over a day.

4. Encourage creativity. Kids should practice creativity if for no other reason than it helps them experience the state of ‘flow’. This is the state of getting so immersed in an activity that you forget about time and place. It’s energizing and helps take stressed and worried kids out of themselves.

5. Talk about their troubles. Talking about what’s worrying you is a great way to remove the burden of worry and reduce anxiousness. Some kids bottle up what’s inside, while others will catastrophise a situation, which can make matters seem worse.

Kids often can’t tell you what may be wrong, so be observant and gently ask questions to help gain a clearer picture of how kids may be feeling.

These ideas are basic common sense. However, as kids’ lives get busier these essentials can sometimes get squeezed out. Have a go at nurturing some (or all) of these habits, for the sake of the mental health of your whole family!

CHESTERFIELD FARM EXCURSION

During May students in Years Three and Five participated in the nationwide National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN). Your child’s individual NAPLAN results are available for collection from the school office.

Parents of children in Year Five are reminded that secondary schools may request a copy of your child’s Year Five NAPLAN results. It is suggested that you file these results in a safe place for future use. An administration fee will be charged if another copy of your child’s NAPLAN results is requested.

NAPLAN RESULTS

The Foundation children are very excited about their upcoming excursion to Chesterfield Farm on

OUTSIDE SCHOOL HOURS CAREChildren and staff at OSHC have taken a keen interest in the Olympics and have pictures of athletes on a feature wall in the OSHC house.  We held our own mini Olympics at After School Care which the children enjoyed.

Birthdays are celebrated at OSHC with the birthday boy or girl having their photo taken as they blow out a candle in a cupcake and everyone sings Happy Birthday.  The birthday child then gets to enjoy their cupcake.

OSHC is available on a permanent or casual basis. Enrolment forms are available from the school office or from OSHC.

A waiting list is held if a session is already fully booked. It is important that the school office or OSHC is notified if your child is not going to attend a session they have been booked in for as that place can then be used for a casual booking.

Once you have a permanent booking you will be billed for that placement whether your child attends or not.

Dear Parents and Students,

We need your help. Junior School Council is running an animal food bank to help abandoned and orphaned animals. This will take

place the second last week of Term Two from:

MONDAY 5TH SEPTEMBER TO FRIDAY 9TH SEPTEMBER.

Mrs. Sibley, whose children attend Warragul North Primary School, runs a rescue service for abandoned animals and needs our help. Without her help these animals would have no future and

the stories of what has happened to these animals are truly awful. We need your help.

The following items are needed and best suit the needs of the animals in care. We are asking people to donate these items to help out. We suggest that as you do your shopping, you choose

any item from the list and bring it to school to place in the box provided in each classroom.

PLEASE ONLY DONATE THE ITEMS LISTED

Look at petrescue.com.au to see the work being done.

Please put your items in the box provided in each classroom and we will watch the donations grow!

Thanks for your help.

Kind regards, Junior School Councillors

At Warragul North Primary School we like to showcase the wonderful musical talents of our students, while giving them the opportunity to perform to a ‘friendly’ and receptive audience in a soirée atmosphere (a reception held in the evening).

Soirées have become a regular event at the school and both teachers and children alike look forward to the evening, where families and friends make up the audience. We encourage all the children who take part in private music lessons at school, to present an item at a soirée during the year. For some children it will be their first real performance.

On Thursday 1st September, 2016, our students will be performing a variety of songs with a diverse range of instruments providing approximately an hour of entertainment.

I would like to take this opportunity to offer an invitation to any parent who is interested in their child learning an instrument or having singing lessons to attend this enjoyable evening to see what it is all about.

Thank you for your continued support of the Performing Arts program at Warragul North Primary School.
