This Is Our New Co-Op Student My name is Rute Demessie. I was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

I came to Canada with my father and younger brother in May of 2009. I am a stu-dent at John Polanyi Collegiate Institute.

I love to play soccer, love to sing, and love to read the Bible and other books. The Bible is my favorite book.

I have always dreamed of a career that I would truly enjoy for the rest of my life and when I heard about nursing from my mother, it grabbed my attention.

I started to view nursing as the profession for me. It would be a personally rewarding job in many aspects and also set me up for a suc-cessful career for my future.

The most appealing part for me is that nursing is a respected profession, which is dedicated to helping the sick and injured.

I have envisioned myself in a rewarding ca-reer in the service of people who are in need, and now that I have found it, I am willing to dedicate myself to it fully.

My dedication comes not only from myself, but from my mother who has always been supportive of my decisions. I have always been interested in health care. I love to spend my quality time with sick people and with poor people. My co-op teacher Mr. Curtis helped me to get in Suomi- Koti Seniors Cen-ter for my co-op placement.

Tervehdys Suomi-Kodin väki! Olen varmasti jo monelle tuttukasvo Suomi Kodilla, mutta niille joille en ole vielä, tulen varmasti tutuksi tämän talven aikana. Olen siis Marjo Kosunen alkuperäinen Joensuun tyttö, mutta nykyisin Suomessa asustelen Tampereella. Viime

keväänä olin harjoittelijana Suomi Kodin Nursing Home osastolla. Olen nyt valmistunut Sosionomiksi Tampereen ammattikorkeakoulusta ja palasin takaisin Torontoon töitä tekemään. Työskentelen nyt Suomi Kodin Assisted Living puolella. Työskentelen erilaisten työtehtävien parissa. Kanadassa tarkoituksenani minulla on viipyä ilonanne maaliskuun loppuun saakka. THE LOONS, THEY ARE GOING SOUTH SOON

Common Loons arrive in Algonquin Park, as lake ice is melting, during mid to late April. Loons quickly begin to es-tablish and defend breeding territories. Nests are built in May and June, and take about a week to complete. A nest is a pile of aquatic vegetation close to the edge of the water body, usually near a sheltered bay, island, point, or adjacent river system. Two olive-brown coloured eggs are laid in the month of June and are incubated for 28 days before hatching. While still small, young loons travel on the backs of their parents, as they do not have the stamina to keep up with them. This behaviour can be observed on many Park lakes during July and early August. By eight weeks of age young loons are fully feathered and can search for food independ-ently of their parents. Young loons usually migrate later than

adults in their first fall.

Common Loons live throughout Canada, from Newfoundland and Labrador to British Columbia, north to the Yukon, Northwest Territory and Nunavut. It is estimated that Ontario has about 65,000 pairs of Common Loons living in the province during the summer months. Near the end of summer, loons will gather on many of Algon-quin's larger lakes prior to migration. Adults will usually migrate before young birds, which may need addi-tional time to mature before migration. By the middle of November, most loons have left Algonquin Park for areas of open water to the south. Most loons migrate to the Atlantic Ocean, but a few may winter on the Great

Lakes.

Common Loons feed on fish such as Yellow Perch, Smallmouth Bass, and assorted smaller fishes usually re-ferred to as "minnows". In addition, some loons feed on naturally fishless lakes, which contain crayfish, frogs,

leeches and aquatic insects.

Common Loons are best known for their yodel, hoot, wail and tremolo calls heard by many Park visitors. How-ever, the first sound that loons make is a 'peep-peep-peep' that is given by chicks when they are still inside the egg. Loons use their more commonly heard vocalizations for a variety of purposes. For example, the hoot call is used as a contact call as birds approach one another. The tremolo signals distress and may urge loons to move to safety. The yodel is used in territorial disputes, essentially stating to any loons close by - "This is our terri-tory!" Finally, the wail indicates a willingness to interact and is used to reestablish contact between individuals when they have been separated. The voice and appearance of the Great Northern Loon has made it prominent in

several Native American tales. These include a story of a loon which created the world in a Chippewa story.

Adult Common Loons have few predators. In Algonquin Park, Ospreys have been observed harassing adult and young birds. In addition, Bald Eagles have attacked loons while on the water. These birds have disappeared from some lakes in eastern North America due to the effects of acid rain and pollution, as well as lead poison-ing from fishing sinkers and mercury contamination from industrial waste. Artifi-cial floating nesting platforms have been provided for loons in some lakes to re-

duce the impact of changing water levels due to dams and other human activities.

This diver is well liked in Canada, appearing on the “loonie” coin and the previ-

ous series of $20 bill, and is the provincial bird of Ontario.

We’ll miss these beautiful birds and their sounds, but they’ll be back in the spring.

Tenants Meeting,

Thursday October 20th, 2011 – 2 pm.

1. Juha welcomed everyone to the October Tenants’ Meeting.

2. Juha told the good news. Suomi-Koti will receive 4 new washing machines and 5 dryers financed by Women’s Auxiliary. They will be installed most likely next week.

3. Juha mentioned that there will be a Mock Disaster Exercise next month required by the Ministry of Health. Fire department will be here. When the bells are ringing, tenants will be asked to stay in their homes and close the doors and not to come to the lobby. We can’t use the elevators when fire alarm is sounding.

4. Juha mentioned that we should be more considerate towards our neighbours. Water and garbage is swept from the balconies without thinking that it goes to the balcony below. He also mentioned perfumes and cats walking in the hallways. These cause allergies to some people.

5. Juha mentioned that door closers are required by fire insurance to be installed in every apartment door. If somebody doesn’t have one, please let the office know and it will be installed.

6. Juha told everybody that residents of 801 Eglinton Ave. East will need every parking spot starting Nov. 1st. There won’t be any empty spots available for anybody else.

7. Juha brought us greetings from his trip to Mediterranean. He promised to show pictures from his trip later.

8. Juha introduced to the tenants our new superintendent couple Tuula and Timo Salonen. They will start their employment Nov. 1st.

9. Juha mentioned that the emergency pagers are only for emergencies. If something needs to be fixed in your apartment, please give a written request.

10. The reason for a recent black-out was a transformer explosion. This gave Suomi-Koti a change to see that our generator and emergency lighting were working. Juha told not to use candles in case lights go out. Everybody should have a flashlight.

11. A question was asked about coffee grounds flushed in the toilet. Juha said this is not as bad as kitty litter sand. A new motor has been installed lately for sump pump.

12. Sirpa introduced all the new tenants. She also mentioned the upcoming programs: Yard Sale on Saturday, Oct. 22, Karelian Pie baking on Monday, Oct. 24, Birthday & Halloween Party on Thursday, Oct. 27 and Comfort Shoe Sale on Friday, Oct. 28. All fitness programs are running according to the Fall schedule except Shuffleboard is cancelled for this month.

2. Juha kertoi, että Naisjaoston ostamat 4 pyykinpesukonetta ja 5 kuivaajaa tullaan asentamaan ensi viikolla.

3. Juha mainitsi, että ”Mock Disaster Excercise”, jonka Terveysministeriö vaatii, tehdään ensi kuussa. Palokunta tulee olemaan myös paikalla. Kun hälytyskellot soivat, asukkaita pyydetään jäämään koteihinsa eikä tulemaan ala-aulaan. Samoin ei voi käyttää hissejä.

4. Juha pyysi asukkaita olemaan huomaavaisia toisiaan kohtaan. Vettä ja roskia on lakaistu parvekkeelta ja ne ovat joutuneet alakerran parvekkeelle. Samoin hajuveden käyttö ja kissojen kävely käytävillä aiheuttaa allergiaa joillekin.

5. Juha kertoi, että ovensulkijoita on toimistossa saatavana, jos joltakin asukkaalta puuttuu se. Suomi-Koti asentaa sen pyydettäessä. Palovakuutuksessa tämä asia vaaditaan.

6. Juha kertoi, että 801 Eglinton Ave. East:llä ei tule olemaan tyhjiä pysäköintipaikkoja marraskuusta alkaen.

7. Juha kertoi terveiset lomamatkaltaan Välimerellä. Hän lupasi näyttää kuvia myöhemmin tältä matkalta.

8. Juha esitteli asukkaille uuden talonmiehen, Timo Salosen ja hänen vaimonsa Tuulan. He aloittavat työsuhteensa marraskuun alussa.

9. Juha mainitsi, että hätäpiipparit ovat vain hätätapauksia varten. Jos tarvitset jotakin korjattavaksi asunnossasi, täytä pyyntölomake.

10. Syy äskettäiseen sähkönkatkaisuun oli muuntajan räjähdys. Tällöin tuli esille, että Suomi- Kodin oma generaattori toimii ja samoin hätävalot. Juha myös kertoi, ettei pitäisi käyttää kynttilöitä valojen puutteessa vaan jokaisella pitäsi olla taskulamppu.

11. Esitettiin kysymys kahvinporojen heittämisestä toilettiin. Juha kertoi, ettei se ole yhtä paha kuin ”kitty litter”, koska porot eivät turpoa. Uusi moottori piti asentaa äskettäin.

12. Sirpa esitteli uudet talonasukkaat. Hän myös kertoi tulevista ohjelmista: pihamyynti lauantaina, lokak. 22 pv, piirakanpaisto maanantaina, lokak. 24pv, syntymäpäivä- ja Halloweenjuhla torstaina, lokak. 27 pv ja Comfort Shoe myynti perjantaina, lokak. 28 pv. Kaikki voimisteluoghjelmat ovat menossa syksyaikataulun mukaan.

KOTIPALVELU TIEDOTTAA L.Jokinen Hiljainen huutokauppa sujui sulavasti. Jälleen kerran täytyy ihmetellä, miten runsaasti saimme lahjoituksia. Joten lämpimät kiitokset kaikille lahjoittajille ja tietysti ostajille myös. Erityiskiitokset Heikki Rönkölle, Ulla Kavakonikselle sekä Reino Koposelle mahtavista aarteista! Kiitos myös Tamaralle uskollisesta avusta. Jäljelle jääneitä tavaroita siirrettiin pihamyynnin niskoille ja paljon kristalleja jne. tullaan näkemään Joulubazaarissa ala-aulassa. Kokonaistuotoksi tuli noin $1680 lokakuun 25 päivään mennessä! Väliaikatiedotus: lapasia on nyt tehty 37 paria lokakuun 25 päivä mukaan luettuna. Alkuperäinen 100 parin tavoite taisi olla vähän liian kunnianhimoinen. Entäpä 50 paria? Onhan meillä vielä ai-kaa runsas kuukausi! Pinnistelkäämme !- Muistutettakoon, että lapaset laitetaan näytteille joulu-kuun alussa ala- aulaan ja kolmeksi parhaaksi pariksi äänestetyt saavat palkinnon. Kaikki lapaset annetaan sitten Naisjaostolle myytäväksi Bazaariin ja tuotto menee samaten heille. Jäljelle jääneet toivotaan lahjoitettavaksi niitä tarvitseville. Tarvitsetko tilapäistä tai jatkuvaakin seuralaista tai avustajaa kävelylle, ostoksia tekemään, asioita toimittamaan jne.? - Vai kaipaisitko vain keskustelukaveria? Kotipalvelulla on nyt lisää henkilökuntaa: Marjo, Ruth ja Peilin. Otathan yhteyttä tarvittaessa. “ WANTED”: Tarvitsemme jatkuvasti pyykinpesupulveria, astianpesuainetta jne.
