Sunshine Coast Youth Summit Background

The Sunshine Coast Youth Summit is an annual event organised to inspire and empower Sunshine Coast

young people aged 15 to 25 years to discuss and develop solutions to issues identified as important within

their local community.

The Sunshine Coast Youth Summit was first held in 2008, inspired by Kevin Rudd’s Youth 2020 Summit, a

creative approach to addressing the concerns of the nation’s young people in order to instigate change.

The Sunshine Coast Youth Summit was developed for young people by young people through

Sustainable Partnerships Australia’s, Future Leaders Program.

Key objectives of the Sunshine Coast Youth Summit are to:

Develop connections between young people, key stakeholders of the community and

council, and local/state/federal government.

Educate young people about Sunshine Coast Councils strategies, policies, planning, and

visions for the future

Engage young people in the development, structure and running of the Summit.

Empower young people to be vocal and heard within their community.

Leadership development

Collaborate partnerships between young people, community, industry and government

Engagement in policy development and decision making

By holding the Sunshine Coast Youth Summit annually young people have been given the opportunity

to continue to work towards resolving the issues they identified as affecting them and their community

and to then report back on their progress and achievements. It also provided an overview of the

changing nature of issues affecting local young people.
