    Something in the air

The RB-47 newsletter produced someinteresting e-mail responses. I have asection describing ollow-up and poten-tial avenues that could be explored in the

uture. Some o it includes new inorma-tion that sheds a little more light on the

    subject.

In mid-February. I decided to cave-in andperorm an interview. I had been asked aew times beore but chose not to do so

because I really saw no point in it. How-ever, ater a bit o gentle prodding by a

ew riends, I let down my guard. The in-terview bounced around on so many di-

erent cases, it sometimes was conusingas to what we were discussing. I knowat one point I reerred to the Fort Worth

newspaper as the Dallas newspaper. Un-

ortunately, I did not bother to correctmysel because o the pace o the inter-view. Despite this mea culpa, I thought it

    went pretty well.

The FE Warren AFB missile incident de-

bate got into ull swing ater JamesCarlson and Tim Hebert presented their

articles on the subject. Robert Hastingsresponded by denying he paid Reuters

to get his stories published. Instead, headmits paying PRnewswire to publish

his story and they got it onto the Reuters

newswire. You have to give Mr. Hastings

credit or nding a way to spin things acertain way. I wonder i he sleeps well atnight realizing that he ruined the careers

and lives o two air orce technicians (ithis story is even true), who got caught

leaking secrets to him through anotherparty?

Roger Paquay provides another contri-bution in this issue regarding his obser-

vations about the November 29, 1989Eupen UFO. Some o it may be new to

readers o SUNlite and some it may beold inormation. It certainly presents in-

ormation or readers to reer to and pur-sue i they desire.

I thought I would share my experiences

recently with going up into the whitemountains and looking at the Barneyand Betty Hill case. This was inspired

by a blog entry rom James MacDonald.I you havent read it, you should as hemakes some interesting points. However,

I question some o his conclusions in thisissue. I hope the town o Lincoln does not

become the next Roswell where thereare Betty/Barney Hill estivals. They dont

need to promote that sort o thing eventhough some o the local businesses are

beginning to try and cash in on it.

It is now the teenth anniversary o the

Arizona UFOs. I reer my readers to SUNlite 2-3, when examining the case. I am

sure there will be plenty o hype in UFO

blogs but it is a act that a bulk o theNUFORC reports made in 1997 did not

describe a massive V-shaped object andinstead, just described a ormation o

lights. Those that reported the massiveobject appear to have been ooled by

Dr. Hartmanns airship and excitednesseects. It is their reports that populatemost o the lms and documentaries giv

ing a misleading impression as to whatwas seen that night by a majority o the

    witnesses in the NUFORC database.

February was also the seventieth anniversary o the Battle o LA. I suggesreaders review SUNlite 3-1 or a complete

description o this event. The conclusionthere is that it was just war nerves and

    not an alien spaceship.

A link that has nothing to do with UFOsbut the scale o the universe is http://htwins.net/scale2/. Enjoy it.

Based on a previous suggestion, I am

working on an index to SUNlite, whichshould be done by the next issue. It wil

be helpul to those trying to locate certain articles/subjects.

    Whos blogging

    UFOs?

    The White house petition bandwag-

on brings out all kinds o individuals

looking or the limelight and ways to

make a buck o people. According to

a PR Newswire release (the same servicepaid or by Robert Hastings to put out his

awed research), Doctor Simeon Hein othe Mount Baldy Institute states that 98%

o people in his poll (which was

an on-line poll designed to getUFO proponents to participate)

believe the White House is lyingin their response to the recent

UFO petition. This Mount BaldyInstitute is not what I would

consider a legitimate scien-tic organization. A group thattrains people in Human usion

(undisclosed ee) and Resonantviewing ($995) to unleash your

untapped potential, just setso all sorts o alarm bells in my

book. Can anybody take theseclaims seriously?

Jim Oberg pointed out a wonderul

story about a science ction based

brothel opening up. Ater those longvoyages between the stars, some aliens

might make a visit. One would think thatsailors are the same everywhere. I won-der i they will have any Orion slave girls?

    The national UFO reporting centers

Peter Davenport has made the pro-

    nouncement that UFO reports are

increasing the rst part o 2012! Hehad 206 reports or the rst twelve dayso 2012 but reading them indicates the

quality o these reports are just not verygood. For instance, one o his rst reports

at midnight was a witness seeing orangeballs o light and shooting stars at mid-

night January 1st. The witness added thatno reworks were occurring at the time. Are we led to believe that there were NO

reworks at midnight when most o the

rest o the world was celebrating? A sig-nicant amount o these reports appearto be caused by the inamous chinese

lanterns. Even more interesting to note isthat sixty o the 206 reports (up to Janu-ary 12th) were on new years day. This

computes to almost 30% o the reportscome rom the day that aerial reworks

are common. I one tosses out these 60,the number o reports equates to about

13 reports per day rom January 2-12.Compare this to Decembers rate o over

15/day and Novembers rate o almost

14/day. It is almost like Davenport doesnot even pay attention to his own statis-

tics. What this demonstrates is the onlyspike in UFO reports occurred on New

Years day, which is not really that unex-pected.

    Robert Sheaer presented some in-

ormation about the Rex Hein pho-

tographs. I have mentioned this inthe past and there seem to be indica-

tions o a hoax. Now somebody namedEnkidu has created a 3-D pair rom twoo the images. As noted by Sheaer, in

this image, the UFO appears to be smalland close vice large and distant. Could

this be the smoking gun o a hoax? Idoubt it. I am sure somebody will pro-

claim the analysis is awed and Heinwould never lie about this. Where haveI heard this story beore?

Bob would add a blog entry regardingan old and ugly rumor that had been

revived and circulated on the internet

about Phil Klass. The rumor is that Philhad oered $10,000 to one o Travis Wal-tons work mates, Steve Pierce. In return

or this payment, Pierce would proclaimthe entire case was a hoax. Robert lays

out how this same charge was madeback in 1978 and Klass had pointed out

that they were alse. Pierce is now re-peating the same story rom long ago

without any real evidence that it is true.

Since Phil is dead, it is easy to make upsuch tales.

Billy Cox once again repeats his claim

that the main stream media is ignor

ing UFOs that are threatening the

skies and the government. Cox parrots the UFO party line regarding Ste

    phenville as his example. It

is almost as i he doesnt eventhink and just has UFOlogists

pulling his puppet strings. guess one can call him UFOs

Howdy doody. Maybe heshould start to perorm some

actual investigative reportingand stop repeating what heis told.

    Cox would later praise the

    good works o the coun-

    tries o South America, who

are trying to resolve theUFO problem on their own

What Cox ails to recognize is

that these governments and their armedservices are simply repeating what proj-

ect Blue Book accomplished almost tyyears ago! It makes or great bedtime

stories and headlines. However, it is notscience and it has resolved nothing. Hecan praise them or wasting their time

and money all he wants. Then againthe Air Force o Uruguay really has not

much to do so chasing saucers might bea worthwhile eort ater all. Maybe they

will shoot one down. Until that happensit is the stu o tabloids, which seems tobe the type o reporting that Cox is best

    at writing.

MUFON is moving on up....to Cincinna

ti, Ohio. Cliord Clit is stepping down

as supreme ruler as well. This isnt a coupthis time but Clit resigned or amily issues and David MacDonald is relieving

him o ultimate command. It appears tha

Mr. MacDonald plans on providing spaceor MUFON, which will include a MUFONstore! Will the location be called MUFON

World? Maybe they will have rides, a greyalien, and a host o other characters run-ning about. Imagine the amount o mon

    ey that could be made!

Richard Dolan took a jab at George

Clooney or stating that he does not

understand why more UFOs are not

    photographed by cell phone cameras

According to Dolan, Clooney should do

ans would evaluate all the evidence. Mr.Dolan, while he may be educated as a

historian, can not seriously be consideredanything more than a UFO proponent

blinded by his believe in conspiracies andalien spaceships

Robert Hastings again makes all sortso claims about his UFOs and Nukes

dog and pony show. I was shocked toread that he claimed that Carlson never

produced any e-mails rom Figel eventhough those e-mails have been pro-

duced at Reality Uncovered and here inSUNlite several times (SUNlite 2-3 and2-6). In both e-mails I published, Figel

pointed out that he interpreted the UFOreport that Hastings states is so important

as somebody just kidding around. Hast-ings never mentions this and he does not

mention to his readers that Figel statedthat he doubts that Salas version eventsat Oscar ight ever happened. Why does

Hastings pretend these things do not ex-ist and why does he REFUSE to admit that

Figel told him these things to his readers?

    Responding to Hastings diatribes was

Tim Hebert, who could not understand

why Hastings has yet to comment on his

post about the Echo Flight shutdown

having nothing to do with UFOs. When

Hebert publicly asked him on the UFOChronicles blog, Hastings said Hebert was

incapable o OBJECTIVELY evaluating theevidence. I nd that a hypocritical state-ment since Hastings has done nothing

to evaluate the actual evidence. He putsaith in his interpretation o what the wit-

nesses stated and ignores any technicalevaluation o what might have occurred.

The bottom line here is Hastings is araido conronting Hebert because he knowshe doesnt have the knowledge that He-

bert has. His silence is deaening.

I was disappointed in Bruce Duensings

blog entry about NORAD being unable

to deend the US against UFOs. Hisoriginal blog entry made a productionabout the inamous missile west o Los

Angeles back in November 2010. Appar-ently, Duensing was unaware it was solved

long ago and it was just an airplane con-trail. My comment on his blog resulted

in him removing this section but he madesome other mistakes that should be men-

tioned. He presented the 2004 Mexican

AF video, which was nothing more thanoil well res lmed by an inrared camera

rom a great distance. Duensing also usethe Belgium UFO chase o March 30-31

1990 as an example. My guess is he useLeslie Kean as his source o inormation

because, like the Mexican AF video andthe Caliornia missile, the Belgium F-16

    chases have been reasonably explained

Salmon-Gilmard perormed an analysiexplaining many o the returns and Au

guste Meessen also wrote a paper explaining many o the echoes recorded by

the radar. I understand Mr. Duensingpoint but his examples were poorly cho

    sen.

    Peter Davenport highlighted a UFO

    photograph that was interesting to

say the least. The witness, who took the

photograph implied he was piloting theplane, which was an Albatross (HU16b)

However, the photograph was takenrom a location on the plane that was inthe passenger compartment. Even more

damning is the EXIF data indicated therewas a seven second dierence (11:16:28

and 11:16:35) between the two imagesbut the witness, who took the image

with an I-Phone, stated it zipped by theplanes as i it were a simple blur and thait was visible or just a split second (time

listed as 0.5 seconds). Indeed the imageo the UFO is blurry, which is more con

using because the entire wing (close tothe photographer) and distant objects

were all in sharp ocus. The blur does noappear to be motion blur but, insteadappears to be due to the object being ex

tremely close to the camera. Shooting aa shutter speed o 1/1800th a second, one

would expect the object to be practicallyrozen unless it zipped by so ast, that it

could not even had been seen. My guesis the UFO image involves something onthe planes window and may be a hoax.

Openminds TVs Jason McClellanshould get his acts right beore com

menting that a UFO had crashed in

South Carolina. He thought the sonicexplosion made it unlike an ordinaryreball and indicated something else

Although bright meteors do not alwayproduce sonic booms, it is not as rare as

he thinks. The evidence is pretty convincing or a bright reball.

his research like Dan Ackroyd beore opin-ing about UFOs. I nd that unny because

all I have seen is Dan Ackroyd parrot theUFO party line in interviews. In SUNlite 2-4,

I provided a quote where he sounded likea raving lunatic. He stated there were 23

species o aliens and that they only landed

in isolated places among many things. InSUNlite 3-1, I pointed out where Ackroyd

stated the missile contrail, which madeheadlines and turned out to be nothing

more than an airplane, was an orb or eggshaped object. This was about a month lat-

er when identication had been positivelymade. Is this somebody who is inormed? At least Clooney was stating an opinion.

Ackroyd tries to pass o his distortions asacts. I guess Dolan would rather promote

a raving loon instead o somebody, whoasked a very inconvenient question that

    Dolan would rather ignore.

Dolan also had a list o twelve docu-

ments that treat UFOs seriously. Itlooks like the standard best case list. Just

some pointers or Mr. Dolan, who seems tobe only a student o UFO history and not

any other kind. The Twining memo wasconcerned about UFOs being an indicatoro Soviet technology. It was only six years

since Pearl Harbor. Twining and the AFwas not going to ignore a possible indica-

tion that the Soviets got a technologicaljump on the US. This was pointed out in

the memo and completely ignored by thisUFO historian. Dolan also adds things likethe Halt Memo regarding the Rendle-

sham case, which has been thoroughlydebunked. He attempts to recount the

Malmstrom Echo/Oscar shutdown eventhough he gets his acts about what Salas

states happened wrong (he states bothOscar and Echo shut down on the sameday, which was Salas original story beore

he changed the date). There are no docu-

ments to support the Oscar ight shutdown and the Echo ight has an explana-tion that does not require UFOs. For some

reason, Dolan ignores these acts! Finally,Dolan includes the F-16 chase with UFOsin Belgium. Missing rom his documents,

are the subsequent studies done by Salm-on-Gilmard and Meessen. Apparently, he

does not want his readers to know aboutthis inormation. What we see here is

Mr. Dolan just pumping out select inor-mation to eed to the UFO masses, who

Bragalia would later tell me that he hadtalked to two individuals who were at

Roswell in July o 1947 and they told himthat both individuals were there during

that month. Bragalia simply accepts thisclaim as actual. I nd the ability or any

one to remember such specic details a-ter sixty years to be somewhat suspect.

In my opinion, calling these gentlemen

dishonorable based on what they oothers recall is just wrong and simply

ignores all possibilities in avor o onlyone. Bragalias motto is apparently, I

you arent going to tell me what I wantto hear, then you are lying and are part

o the conspiracy. I nd this approachto a very controversial subject, highly bi-ased and lacking in objectivity. I Bragalia

wants to prove i somebody was or wasnot present in Roswell in July 1947, I sug-

gest he obtain RAAF records or the per-sons service record beore calling that

person a liar. What he has presented soar is speculative and subject to error. As a side note, the interviewees did not

recall the names o General Roger Rameyor Colonel Blanchard. I assume rom Bra-

galias implication is they were denyingthey had contact with them on purpose

Because Bragalia apparently has littleor no military background, he missesthe obvious reason why these individu

als did not remember them. A private isthe lowest man on the totem pole and

would not normally associate with highranking ofcers in a large command like

the 509th bomb group. Unless Blanchardand Ramey were as amous and amboyant as George Patton, it is unlikely that a

buck private, who served in their command but rarely had any close contact

with them, would even remember them.I this is an example o how the dream

team is conducting its research, one canexpect more o the usual wildly specula-tive conclusions and inaccurate research

so common in the writings about Ro-

    swell.

Hitting the nail on the head

Nick Rederns blog posting about theinamous missing les was on targetI cant count how many times I have seenvarious crash proponents make much out

o this. It is nice to see that Mr. Redernlooked at it logically and was not blinded

by an emotional tie to the case.

    The Roswell

    Corner

I you are not with us....

Anthony Bragalia continues to try andmake something out o nothing. Hislatest article basically called two elderlygentlemen liars because they did not tell

him what he wanted to hear.Mr. Bragalia tried to interview two men

who were supposedly in Roswell in 1947.However, one denied being stationedat Roswell even though he admitted to

being a private in the Army Air Force in1946 and some o 1947. The other men-

tioned being stationed there in 1946 butnot 1947.

Tony Bragalia, as is his custom, impliesthat he could tell they were lying tohim by the way they responded on the

phone. According to Bragalia, the year-book documents they were there and

because they reuse to admit they werestationed there, they are being dishon-

orable.Because he has a strong belie that thereis a conspiracy and that these men will

lie, cheat, or steal to hide their involve-ment, Bragalia has drawn his conclusion.

However, he ignores possible reasonswhy they stated what they did. I can

    think o a ew:

They dont remember being there. This is quite plausible especially ithey elt they let at a certain time o

year or were never there. One item Iound revealing was an article called,

Phantom ashbulbs: False recol-lections o hearing the news aboutChallenger (Neisser and Harsh). The

study had students write what had

happened the day ater the Chal-lenger accident and then, two anda hal years later, repeat the report.

About a third o the memories wereinaccurate even though some othose individuals elt the later mem-

ories were accurate! One witnesseven moved their location rom the

school to her parent s house. Thelesson here being that one can not

consider any o these old memoriesto be 100% accurate. When talking

about a private, who spent just a ew

years in the military over sixty yearsago, it is not beyond the possibility

that they would orget details or getthem wrong rom that time period.

They werent there in JULY o 1947as they stated. As best I can tell, the

yearbook was printed sometimein mid-1947. It shows events rom

1946 as well as 1947 so it encom-

passes that time period and not justthe summer o 1947. I somebody

was stationed there in 1946 but not1947, they would probably appear

in the yearbook. There is the possibility that he got

the wrong individual in the case othe person, who claimed they werenever stationed at Roswell. Bragalia

states the surname is extremely rare.I looked into the RAAF yearbook and

discovered three Robert E.s or therst Air Transport Unit. Two t the

description he gave (the other be-ing a sergeant and having a verycommon last name). While I could

not nd any mention o one o themin the newspaper archive, I did dis-

cover that a Robert E. Walthour (whois listed as a pc in the 1st ATU) rom

Greensburg, PA had exited the Armyin October 1945 (Connellsville, PAdaily courier - Oct 16, 1945). When

I pointed this out to Bruce Hutchin-son, he ollowed up by looking into

the national archives and discov-ered that there were three Robert

    E. Walthours rom Pennsylvanniathat served in the Army in the 1940s.

Two o them enlisted in 1946 (in di-

erent locations and with dierentages/backgrounds). Could Bragalia

have gotten the wrong person (hedid not respond to my two e-mail

queries on this)? Even i it wasnt, itdemonstrates that it is possible toget two people with the same rare

surname, serving in the military at

the same time. The person who denied being pres-ent at RAAF did purposeully lie to

him but or reasons other than aUFO crash. Maybe he had militaryor personal reasons he did not want

anyone to discover.Bragalia misinterpreted what these

individuals told him. We have no re-cordings o what was actually stated

so they can be veried. It is his in-terpretation o what they said in his

    article.

page headline (The image o that

headline and the rst part o thestory is displayed above and to theright here). Several newspapers in

the east had the story on page one(see story to the let). All mentioned

an AF investigation into the story. Is it any surprise that on the same

day the story made news across thenation, Lt. Col. Blount wrote abouta recent rumor regarding a ying

saucer crash in Mexico? It appearsto be just more than a coincidence

that Blount would make reerenceto a recent rumor o a spaceship

crash that had the same location asthe Dimmick story. When Gilles Fernandez pointed

this story out to Mr. Bragalia, hedismissed it because it was only

a rumor and Lt. Col. Blount wouldhave not ound the story credible

enough to discuss it in this ofcialcorrespondence. O course, Braga-lia completely ignores the context

o the statement made by Lt. Col.Blount. He declared it a recent

(i.e. in the past ew days/months)rumor that is was bizarre (i.e. out-

rageous), and described the yingsaucers as so-called. Since hewas talking about UFOs in this let-

    ter, casually mentioning this news

would not be out o the ordinaryespecially when he reerred to it inthe manner he appears to be de-

scribing. In my opinion, Blount was reer-ring to the Dimmick hoax and it

had nothing to do with Roswell. As with many o Bragalias sensa-

tionalist writings, his ailure to seebeyond the Roswell myth prevents

him rom looking at more logicalexplanations.

    More wild speculation

Tony Bragalia once again dem-onstrated his ability to twistlogic in order to link just about

anything to Roswell. In this in-stance, we have a March 10, 1950

letter written rom Lt. Col. RobertBlount to a Dr. Robley Evans at MIT.Lt. Col. Blount discusses in the let-

ter, an April 1949 report written byDr. Paul Fitts concerning the psy-

chological analysis o UFO reports. In the nal paragraph o the letter,

    Blount writes:

    It has been recently rumoredthat

one o these so-called fying sau-

    cers crashed in Mexico; however,

    the details are somewhat bizarre

at the moment. (my emphasis in

    bold and underlined).

Bragalia links this all to Roswell. He

picks out the bizarre comment asmeaning that it was exotic. How-

ever, it could also be interpretedto mean that the details were out-

rageous and difcult to believe. There is reason to suspect this wasthe case.

Back in SUNlite 3-3, I pointed out

to my readers a lecture on March8, 1950 at Denver University, wherethe Aztec story was being dis-

cussed. That next day an articlein the Greeley tribune mentionedthe lecture but also noted that Ray

    L. Dimmick had recently reportedthat he had seen or heard about a

ying saucer crash outside MexicoCity. The Dimmick story appeared

in national newspapers on March9th and 10th. The March 10th Long

Beach Independent made it a ront

Page 1 story in the SyracusePost-Standard on March

    10th, 1950.

In 2009, Kentaro Mori posteda link on his blog to an articleby Science Fiction writer JamesMacDonald concerning the Bar-

ney and Betty Hill incident. Thearticle was over a year and a hal

old and I was surprised that I hadnot heard o it until then. James

lives in New Hampshire and is

quite amiliar with the trip Bettyand Barney took that night. To

be honest, I was more than will-ing to accept the idea they con-

used something astronomicalas the UFO and then dreamed

the rest o the story up underhypnosis. MacDonald makes acase or why things transpired

the way they did and explainsthe missing time . Ater read-

ing his article, I was intrigued byhis argument. Some o the key

points that appeared to go unmentionedin the popular UFO literature was sud-denly illuminated by MacDonald.

The Betty and Barney Hill event

Iam not going to rehash the detailsabout this event other than mentionthe basic outline:

Betty and Barney Hill were returningto their home in Portsmouth, New

Hampshire ollowing a trip to Nia-gra Falls and Canada on September

    19th, 1961.

The trip home involved a very longdrive along the minor two-lane roadsthrough the mountains in northern

    New Hampshire.

They let Colebrook, NH around 10PM.

As they drove south, around Lancast-

er, NH, they saw a bright light in thesouthern sky near the moon.

The light continued to bethere as they drove south butappeared to get bigger.

    They tried to convince them-

selves it was an airplane but, ater examining with binocu-

lars, thought it was an alienspaceship.

As they drove south, they seemed

to have lost track o the time. Thenext thing they knew they were onInterstate 93 heading towards Con-

cord. They did not really recall mucho what happened between Lincoln,

    NH and that point.

When they arrived in Portsmouth, itwas almost dawn. They had estimat-ed they would return around 2 or 3

AM. It seems they had about 3 hourso missing time.

    Later hypnosis revealed they were

abducted by aliens. The details areo the event are well known in theUFO community.

    The elusive UFO

One part o the case that conuses meis the story about Betty and Barneydriving or over 30 minutes watching thisvery bright UFO but nobody else driving

in the area saw it. Just over twenty miles

rom Franconia Notch (about the samedistance Lancaster is rom the same lo-cation), is the Mount Washington Obser-

vatory. At an altitudeo over 6,000 eet, it is

the highest point in theWhite Mountains and

one can see or dozenso miles rom there (see

the image I took belowcenter which shows the

    view rom the mountain

top towards Lincoln, NHjust south o the notch)

    The observers theremake weather observa-

tions on a regular basisbut the UFO seems to

have been invisible tothem. I Betty could seethe UFO rom ground

level, why couldnt theseobservers see it rom

    over 6,000 eet altitude?

Then we have the motives o the UFO oc-cupants. Were they ocused the entiretime on Betty and Barney as they drove

south? Why did they wait or Betty andBarney to come to them? I they were

ascinated by the Hills, why didnt theysimply go get them early on?

These are questions that appear to beignored by the proponents o the Hill

case. While, it is difcult to determinehow aliens would actually act, the miss-

ing UFO reports rom all o northern NHseems to indicate problems with the sto-

    ry as told.

    Drowsy driving

Akey point that James makes is thatBetty and Barney were driving lateat night trying to get home rom a long

trip to Canada. They had apparently runout o money and could not aord a ho-tel. As a result, they were going to drive

through the night to get home.

Driving down two lane roads that twistabout would make or a difcult trip dur-

ing the day time. On my trip toLancaster, which I had drivenduring the day and at night,

I ound the roads to be a bittasking the arther north you

drove. The trip to Twin Moun-tain rom Lancaster was par-

ticularly difcult in the darkeven today. Back in 1961, it

would have been somewhatView rom the top o Mount Washington towards the SW. Some o the peaks are over 30 miles away.

weather was clear in Manchester, lowclouds hid the mountain tops. It was an

inormative trip but I was unable to ac-complish my goal to see how the light

appeared at night. Between my astron-omy hobby and other obligations, I just

never got to go up to the mountains atnight or a ew more years. I nally got

    that chance last all.

Beore I go into the drive, I really wanted

to mention how the town o North Lin-coln, NH is beginning to see a chance tomake money o o the case. I stopped

or gas and discovered the gas stationhad all sorts o alien reerences on the

outside. The unniest thing was when Iwent to the rest room. The walls o the

ONLY bathroom inside were coated withnewspaper clippings, magazine articles, and other items reerencing the Hills, Ro-

swell, and just about anything else relat-ed to UFOs. Do they really expect people

to read all o this while others wait to usethe bathroom?

Ater gassing up, I chose to stop by thesign that has been erected commemorat-

ing the event. It is too bad that describesthe incident as actual, which gives the

event too much credence. Less skeptical

people would accept the story blindly. Itreally should have stated that it was an

alleged abduction. O course, the pro-tests would have come rom Kathleen

Marden, who apparently designed thesign and got it erected. I am surprised

there was not a plug on the sign to readher book. Perhaps the state o NH would

    only allow so much.

Ater taking a ew pictures o the Indian

Head outcrop, I proceeded north throughFranconia notch and the White Mountain

    orest towards Lancaster NH

    Mount Prospect

When I arrived in Lancaster, NH, could see what Mr. MacDonald haddescribed. The view to the south is ob-scured by buildings and the surrounding

hillsides. As one drives south throughtown, you begin to drive up a grade tothe top o a ridge next to Mount Prospect

where a view opens up to show the viewto the south (see above).

As I watched the increasing twilight rom

the top o the hill at Mount Prospect, Ibegan to have an uneasy eeling aboutthe mountain light theory. The light on

the mountain was not very noticeable tothe naked eye, despite it being easy to

see in binoculars and my telephoto lens(see below). At best it would appear no

brighter than the average star (about +3)and maybe a bit ainter. It is possible, thelight could have been much brighter in

1961. However, the tower, as it exists to-

day, could not have grabbed Betty Hillsattention.

    7

lonely and, i one were not amiliar withthe road, tricky to navigate.

Add to these issues the mental and

physical atigue they must have elt andyou have a recipe or conusion and mis-

takes. Is it any surprise that they couldnot remember exactly where they were

or when they passed through a certain

    area?

While many UFO proponents state theyshould have gotten home by 3AM, Mac-

Donald notes they were not amiliar withthe New Hampshire roads in 1961 and

the trip would have taken much longer. This was conrmed by Peter Brookesmith, who drove the trip over a decade ago. He

computed an arrival time in Portsmoutho around 5 AM. He also estimated that

the trip rom Colebrook to Indian Headtook at least two and possibly three

hours. All the multiple stops that Bettyand Barney took that night could makeup or the three or so hours that suppos-

edly were missing rom their trip.

    Up on the mountain top

James MacDonalds big surprise wasthe source o the UFO. He had driventhe trip with his amily and attempted

to locate some o the landmarks on hisdrive. At the time I rst read the article,

I was not aware o anyone trying this. Ilater learned that both Karl Pock and Pe-

ter Brookesmith had documented theirattempts at perorming the drive in thebook Encounters at Indian Head. How-

ever, neither o them bothered to men-tion MacDonalds potential source o the

    UFO.

Just south o Lancaster, New Hampshire,is when Betty rst noticed the UFO.James notes that this is where you just

come up over a ridge and see the peak

o Cannon Mountain or the rst time. In1959, a tower with an intense light hadbeen placed on the top o Cannon moun-

tain. It was MacDonalds suggestion thatthis light could have been the source othe UFO that intrigued me. So, I decided

to make a trip to the White Mountainsand see or mysel.

    North Lincoln, NH

Ilive in Manchester NH and rst attempt-ed this trip in April o 2009. While the

then moved to the let side o the roadLooking at old maps o the road, it was

not a very straight path like the presentinterstate and it had several changes in

direction during this leg. Looking at the1964 images compared to the lights loca

tion, we would see the ollowing pattern

on the southern part o the route as oneexits the notch), I turned o the road and

was able to see the light only about amile southeast o its location.

The next exit I turned o at was about4 miles rom the light near the Flume

parking area. The light was very obviousUsing a telephoto lens (see below), one

can see how this light might appear tobe an airborne crat.

As I continued to drive south, the light

disappeared behind the trees shortly beore reaching the road sign commemo-

rating the event but reappeared a mile

    Driving south

While driving south along route 3, thelight continued to be aint to me. Ihad seen Cannon Mountain as I had driv-en north during daylight and expected to

see the light easily. This was not the case.

    Ater passing through Twin Mountain,

one drives into the edge o the WhiteMountain National Forest. There are plen-

ty o trees as one drives in a west-south-west direction. They obscure just about

anything to the south or southwest.

James MacDonald identied a picnic area

in this region where the Hills reportedlystopped. This is the Mount Cleveland area

and it is very small (see image above). Ac-cording to the literature, they could see

the UFO rom this point but I do not seehow i it was to the south or southwest.

The trees and hills hide just about every-

thing in that direction even where thereis no oliage on the trees.

    The light appears

As I approached within about ve mileso the mountain the road turns to-wards the southwest. Suddenly a brightlight, which I estimated was as bright as

Sirius, appeared to my right in the trees. It wasnt a star or planet because it was in

a location where no bright stars or plan-ets were positioned. It then moved to the

let side o the road. I was pretty sure Iwas seeing the light on top o the moun-

tain but the road was too dark and I couldnot see much.

Ater the road opened up with a wideview I was able to veriy I was seeing the

light on the mountain. There was a park-ing area on the eastern side o the road

that allowed me to stop and take somepictures. Was this area accessible in 1961?

Aerial photographs are not very clear andneither are the topographic maps I have.It seems that it would be a better argu-

ment or the stop that Betty and Barneyst made than the Mount Cleveland picnic

    area.

The mountain was visible and the light

was quite prominent on the right sideo the road. The telephoto shows how it

would have appeared rom this locationusing binoculars (see above). The moonwas visible but under a darker sky, the

light might appear to have been in thesky and not on the mountain top. As I

  • 7/30/2019 SUNlite4_2

    10/239

was not very bright rom Mount Prospecin Lancaster. The drive south through

Whiteeld to Twin Mountain providesviews o Cannon Mountain but I neve

noticed the light to be prominent. Onlywhen I was within a hal-dozen miles o

Cannon Mountain did it become an itemo interest. The conditions or my drive

were pretty clear, so I doubt the issue

had to do with intervening atmosphereHowever, we dont know i the lights bril

liance has changed in the past ty yearsA brighter bulb or a clearer casing might

make the dierence. I would consider ipossible but not likely that the light on

the mountain was what Betty rst sawIt may have been that she rst conusedJupiter or Saturn, which were near the

moon and bright enough to be noticed.

Once they were within a ew miles o Cannon Mountain, the light started to play a

role in the events. Reading the narrativethe characteristics o the UFO appearedto mimic that o the light on the moun

tain top. One has to remember that athe time o the incident, both Barney and

Betty were very atigued and Betty hadall sorts o wild ideas about what they

were seeing. It would not take much othem to be conused and convinced theywere seeing something other than the

light on top o the mountain. Is it any surprise that as they drove urther south, the

UFO seems to have disappeared romthe sky? It seems to be a signicant co-

incidence that prior to passing throughthe notch, the UFO was in ront o thembut ater they passed through the notch

    it eventually disappeared rom view.

Is this case solved with this explanation? cant state that we can conclusively close

the book here. However, these explanations appear to me to be more plausiblethan an alien spaceship that nobody else

    noticed that night.

or so south o this location near the US-93 interchange. The light, over six miles

away, was still quite prominent. In 1961,the light may have been more or less vis-ible depending on the intervening ter-

    rain/trees.

    Planetarium simulation

Ater scaling the image on page 8 withimages rom the Stellarium planetar-ium program, I decided to make some

simulated images o how the stars andmoon might appear to Betty and Barney

Hill rom the same location at dierenttimes. Below are images or times 2330

and 0030. I chose these times becausethis is the time period it is believed thatBetty and Barney made it to Franconia

Notch. The moon was still visible but was

just o the right edge. It is important to

point out that this is the view they wouldhave as they exited the orest/woods

about 3 miles north o Cannon Mountain. As one drives closer to the mountain, themoon and planets would have shited

position relative to the ridgeline. Theywould have been pretty low and disap-

peared behind the mountains as theydrove south through the notch.

    Reections

As I proceeded south on US-93, I elt Ihad seen enough. It was clear thatthe light was very prominent withina hal-dozen miles o the mountain.

Could it have played a role in the eventsthat transpired that night in September1961?

In my opinion, I elt the light, as it is today,

The google earth image to the let shows the road as it is today. The Historical aerials image (http://historicaerials.com/) to the right shows theroad leading to Franconia Notch in 1964 . The road Betty and Barney took is now called SR18 or Prole Road (Marked by arrows on let image).

The narrow nature o the road compared to the interstate demonstrates the twists and turns that would make the drive difcult and shit theposition o the light relative to the road. The nature o the roads in 1961 is an important actor to consider when examining the case.

The moon and planets or the night o September 19/20, 1961 at 2330 (L) and 0030 (R) as viewed rom the rest area location where I took the photograph on page 8. In 1961, there would have been more trees and ondescends into a valley ater leaving this point.

Robert Hastings continues to push oneveryone the idea that the FE War-ren AFB missile incident was caused by

UFOs. I really see no reason to go intothe technical details as Tim Hebert has

demolished most o what Hastings has

presented. However, there are otherdetails that he has been presenting that

    bear mentioning.

It appears that most o Hastings insideinormation has come rom an indi-

vidual that has connections with activeduty personnel. He has been eedingHastings all the inormation that Hast-

ings has been announcing to the world. He also appears to be the source o the

blimp-like UFO reports. His anonymityand close ties to Hastings indicate he is

probably one o those acionados inter-ested in the UFOs and nukes story lineand wants to become part o it. Since we

dont know his name, I will reer to him bythe code name Wannabe.

Wannabe has told Hastings he has re-

ceived inormation rom two missile tech-nicians attached to FE Warren AFB. Thesetechnicians have since been asked to re-

tire and had their DD214s agged sothey cant pursue deense contract work

in the uture. This all has to do with themilitary discovering they had been leak-

ing classied inormation about UFOs ormissile technology to Wannabe.

The whole problem with this story is thatthe technicians sounded like junior en-

listed personnel, who cant really retire.Even i they were senior enlisted person-

nel/ofcers, they would not be allowedto retire with honors i their DD214shave been agged. That indicates they

were punished and would not be honor-

ably discharged. I these enlisted menthought they were wronged by thispunishment, they could ask or a court-

martial. When I was in the Navy, we werealways told to request one i you weretruly innocent o any wrongdoing. The

act they chose not to ask or one indi-cates it is likely they were punished or

violating security regulations regardingthe activities on base and their departure

has nothing to do with UFOs.

However, i their story was true, one can

imagine what kind o press coverage

these individuals could generate i theywere to proclaim they were orced out

o the USAF because o UFOs! Legal action might be possible. At this point, the

individuals have little to lose since they

already have suered punishment andwere orced out o the service with dire

consequences i you believe WannabeHastings, who is great or threatening

legal action against anybody who questions him, seems uninterested in the wel

are o these two individuals or what hecould potentially gain rom the publicityOne wonders why? Is it possible because

    they dont even exist?

The two technicians story is based onsome anonymous individuals who are

contacting Mr. Wannabe. In turn, Mr. Wannabe talks to Hastings. This brings us intoa possibility that some o these individu

als may not even exist or are not who theyclaim to be. A security violation would be

serious business and the military wouldmake sure that everybody was aware o

it. Looking about at the various militarynews sources, I could nd no indicationthat any individuals were discharged be

cause they violated security regulationsat FE Warren. So either the USAF has kep

it quiet or the stories about these individuals are not accurate.

While skeptics, like mysel, cant proveanything as long as these individuals re-

main anonymous, there are the earmarkso a potential hoax here. The entire story

or parts o it may have been abricatedor eect. There is tendency or UFOlo-

gists to be taken in by stories they wanto believe and this could be the caseagain. Hoaxers/liars like Billy Meier, Ed

    Walters, Don Schmitt, Frank Kaumann

Glenn Dennis, Phil Imbrogno, etc. areperect examples o this sort o thing. It isup to Robert Hastings to exercise his due

diligence in vetting his sources prior tomaking pronouncements. He has yet todemonstrate that his sources are reliable

    or even exist.

Hastings hoax? The dance o the planets

March is probably going to be a ban-ner month or UFO reports. Theweather is going to warm up and peopleare going to be out in the evening to see

the wonders o the night sky. You can alsoadd the anniversary to the Arizona UFOs

to alert some people to go out and look.

The rst big event in March is the ap-pearance o Mars in the east ater sunset.

Mars is at opposition and is brighter thanall the night skys stars but Sirius. It will

be a bright orange beacon or those whoare not sure what they are observing. It

will be interesting to see how many re-ports will be traced to this IFO.

The second big astronomical event hap-pens the evening o March 13th (see

below image using Stellarium sotware). On that night the planets Venus and Ju-

piter will be very bright twins a ew de-grees apart in the west ater sunset. Theywill be close together or the week beore

and ater. In late February and March, themoon will pass by the two planets on

successive nights (on the 25th and 26tho both months). The queen o UFOs and

the king o the planets will put on quitea show or celestial observers. Will theyalso produce the lions share o UFO re-

    ports during March?

Ihave received a ew comments aboutthe RB-47 case and I elt it was neces-sary to go over some o the counter-ar-

guments I received. I also wanted to addany details that I came across in looking atnew inormation I received/discovered.

    We dont do ractions?

One o the rst arguments I received

was the act that it was positivelyknown that the RB-47 came across thecoast at the 89th meridian. This is sup-

posed to be a proven act because RB-47s always ew along round numbered

Meridians and Latitudes. The purpose ousing round numbers was that it made it

easier or the analysts to determine thelocations o radar sites rom the data.

I ound this argument rather odd. Onecould easily y along any line o longi-

tude/latitude (even ones that were notround numbers) and the data would

be just as easy to analyze as long as theanalysts could calculate using ractions.

This implies the analysts and RB-47 crews

were just not very smart or very good attheir jobs. I could not agree with that

conclusion. When I was in the navy, wepracticed the motto to train the way we

ght. I they ew that way during train-ing, then they would y that way duringa mission. Such a predictable pattern

would be recognized within a ew mis-

sions. This means that, because the USAFdid not want the analysts to calculate po-sitions using ractions, they endangered

the crews and their missions. Somethingwas wrong with this methodology.

In an eort to resolve the issue, I contact-ed a navigator who had own in RB-47s,

and asked him about this among otherthings. The response I received was that

he had no idea where the explanationor ying along lines o longitude and

    latitude originated. His experience was

that they did not purposeully y along

specic longitudes or latitudes or thesake o making the data easier to evalu-

ate. He added that i they did y alonga specic line o latitude or longitude itwas only by coincidence. The only time

he could recall doing so was when theynavigated up the prime meridian rom

England on their rst leg o their trip totheir operating area.

What this all means is that the theorythey were navigating specic lines o lon-

gitude and latitude so the ECM operatorscould obtain valid data is not very plau-

sible. The idea that they would restrictthemselves to ying along only round

numbered values o longitude/latitudeseems even more absurd. As a result, one can not categorically state the plane

positively ew up the 89th meridian. Iwould need to see the navigators log to

change my opinion on this and not wish-ul thinking.

We also have several reasons that theywere not ying along the round number

even i, contrary to what the navigatortold me, this was standard procedure:

The pilot, Lewis Chase, stated that1.

they did not perorm any Raven mis-sion until ater the turn west romMeridian. There would be no reason

or them to y along a round num-

    bered meridian at this point.

Both McCoid and McClure stated it2.

was not a training ight. There wasno reason to y along a specicround numbered longitude.

I they were training analysts to cal-3.

culate positions o radar sites, theywould want to make it difcult or

them to perorm the calculations.Flying along 88.75 vice 89 degrees

would introduce a twist or those

computations with known radar locations to see i they could do it un-

der actual conditions where a roundnumbered line o longitude was no

    possible.

Assuming they were attempting to4.y along the 89th meridian, what

    prevents them rom having drited

eastward three to ve miles? TheCPS-6B at the Keesler annex was only

about 2.5 miles to the east o the89th meridian (at 88.95 degrees). I

they were o course just a hal-dozenmiles, it would be possible or them

to be on the east side o the Keeslerradar and then potentially have anupscope signal with a broken relay/

    connection.

Call me stubborn but unless I can see actual documentation that the plane positive-

ly ew over the coast at 89.0000000000degrees longitude, I still consider it verypossible the plane ew east o the CPS-

6B and that was the source o the up-scope signal.

    A supersonic radar plane?

Inever examined the possibility that theup-scope signal was due to a plane witha radar on board. The Soviets had a radathat was similar to the CPS-6B in that it

operated around 3GHZ. It was reerred toas Token. It was suggested that a large

supersonic plane could have such a radamounted on it and create a test or theRB-47 crew.

About the only plane that satises the

need or being supersonic and large wasthe B-58 Hustler. It was rst own in

November 1956. The problem with thisidea is that there are no records o suchan aircrat or any such modication. The

B-58 did not become operational at Car

swell until 1960 because o a long test period so it seems unlikely that an untestedbomber would have been used in this

way. It is an interesting theory but, without some more convincing data (like adocument describing this modication)

I would not consider it plausible.

    A orgotten radar site

One item that I had missed in my original map was the Perrin AFB trainingradar that existed in 1957. In 1955, there

  • 7/30/2019 SUNlite4_2

    13/2312

was an AN/FPS-3 (L-band) radar used

or training ground control interceptionwith the training squadron located at the

base. In 1962, the station had becomepart o the air deense network with AN/

FPS-20 (L band) and AN/FPS-6 (S band2700-2900 MHz) radars. Perrin AFB waslocated north o Dallas near the Okla-

    homa border.

    Another potential light source

Iobtained a 1961 aeronautical chart orthe Dallas-Fort Worth area and noticedthat there was a helipad or Bell Helicop-

ter in Hurst, Texas, which was only about10 miles ENE o downtown Fort Worth.

One might add the possibility that Bellwas testing a helicopter that morning. It

seems unlikely but it is an avenue to pur-sue in the uture.

    What was at Majors aireld?

Inoticed that the bearing rom the1044Z position pointed in the direction

o Greenville, Texas. I did not think much

o it and looked urther to Bartlesvilleand Tulsa or a source o a radar signal.

However, located at Greenvilles Majorseld was a company called TEMCO. In

the Spring/Summer 1994 edition o theAmerican Intelligence Journal, there wasan article describing the work at TEMCO

associated with modiying aircrat orCommunications Intelligence gathering.

This involved modiying B-50 and C-130or intelligence gathering missions, which

sounds similar to what the RB-47 weredoing. Is it possible that a radar signal osome kind was generated here that was

used to test some o the equipment onthese planes? I so, because o the clas-

sied nature o the work, the USAF mightnot want it mentioned in any unclassied

    documentation like a UFO report.

    Civilian air trafc activity

Iound an interesting web site that hasimages o all sorts o time tables romvarious airlines rom the time period.

    http://www.timetableimages.com/ttim

    ages/complete/complete.htm

Glancing at several o the airlines that ser-viced Greater Southwestern Airport be-

tween Fort Worth and Dallas, I only oundone ight that might have been involved

The 1958 American airlines schedule lists

a Flight 211 (A DC-6) being scheduledto land at about 3:55AM. It then let at

4:25AM. I the ight existed in 1957 andwere delayed in any way, it could have

been landing or taking o at the time theRB-47 was in the area.

    Navigator Tom Hanley

During my eorts to locate RB-47 navi-gators, I managed to contact the son

o the Navigator on the ight, Tom Han-ley. He was very receptive to my inquiriesbut was sad to report that his ather had

passed away last all. I was disappointedin mysel or not pursuing this line a year

ago as I might have been able to talk tohim. Hanelys son stated that he really

did not talk much about it and there waslittle he probably could have added. I wasmore interested in his knowledge about

the navigation aspects o the case. It is

not known i he was contacted by thechampions o the case (other than DrMcDonald) as they do not mention it

Perhaps he had nothing worthwhile toadd or, maybe, there are other reasons hewas never contacted. I let my condolenc

es with his son and shared some personastories with him about my ather, who is

a Navy veteran and about the same ageHopeully, Tom Hanley will be well re-

membered or all o his accomplishmentsas a navigator in an RB-47 and a athe

and not or this isolated UFO incident.

Kevin Randle made a recent blog post-ing that basically repeats the sameold argument about anecdotal evidenceand how science will accept it or certain

sciences but not or UFOs. As expected,Randle makes his case by drawing paral-

lels with the discovery that meteoritescame rom alling out o the sky.

    Were proessors lying?

President Thomas Jeerson made themistake o suggesting that it was im-possible or rocks to all rom the sky. Hewould live to regret making the statement

when science eventually determined thatthis was the case. I you listened to manyUFOlogists, it was the anecdotal testimo-

ny o the eyewitnesses that establishedthis. However, they also had the rocks

that ell, which demonstrated the storythe witnesses were telling were accurate.

So, it was not the anecdotal testimonyalone that established the act that mete-orites came rom the sky.

    Anecdotal meteor observations

As an amateur astronomer, I am ullyaware o how anecdotal testimonyhas played a role in observations o as-tronomical events. One o the elds I

rst became involved with was meteorobserving. I spent hundreds o hours

in my backyard, counting meteors as ateenager. Reecting on my observations

back during that time period, I suspectthat some o my observations were notthat accurate. I just did not have the ex-

perience to dierentiate between what Ithought might have been a meteor and

just tricks o the eye. I probably countedthese tricks (ickering lights/dark me-

teors) as meteors when they probablywerent. What this demonstrates is thatone has to be careul at accepting such

    observations at ace value.

My meteor observations had also got-ten me involved with help researching

a potential meteor shower, called theUpsilon Pegasids. It had been proposedby Hal Povenmire in the 1970s and 80s

based on anecdotal reports rom meteorobservers, who reported seeing mete-

ors coming rom the constellation oPegasus. However, having some meteor

observers claiming they saw a ew mete-ors rom a specic area o the sky is not

good enough to establish the showers

existence. The maximum or the showerwas amid all the other summer showers

in early August so it would require pho-tographs o point/near point meteors to

veriy the showers existence. I took many

photographs o the great square on thedates in question but never was able to

record a single Upsilon Pegasid. At onepoint, meteor observers began to doubt

the radiant even existed and it was jok-ingly reerred to by some as the Halsieds.

I lost track o the research regarding theUpsilon Pegasids over the past ew de-cades but I see that Mr. Povenmire has

written at least one paper on the subjectand seemed to be making some head-

way in getting the shower established. The point o this is that Povenmire could

not rely on anecdotal evidence alone. Heneeded calibrated photographic/videoevidence to support his theory. The me-

teors he has recorded may or may not besimple sporadics and it is going to take

much more work to conrm the exis-tence o this meteor shower.

A nal type o anecdotal report associ-ated with meteors are reball reports.

In the past, beore the advent o all skyvideo cameras, it was mostly visual ob-

servations o these reballs that wereused to look or meteorite alls. These

anecdotal reports can be valuable i theyare accurate. However, when the analysiso the trajectory is based on just a ew

observers, errors can produce inaccurateconclusions. Only the discovery o me-

teorites will conrm which observationsare correct and those that are not.

    Other astronomical reports

    Amateur and early proessional astron-

omers reported many events basedon their observations. Some o themhave been accurate and others have not.

The ones that havent (like the Martiancanals or the planet Vulcan), have beendiscarded but the others needed to be

conrmed. Recent amateur astronomerrecordings o bright ashes due to re-

ections on Mars and impacts on Jupiterhave conrmed some observations made

in the past. Beore these recordings, theywere just anecdotal reports which may or

may not be correct until they were con-

    rmed.

What this means is that anecdotal testimony can play a role in scientic research

but one cant establish something as be-ing actual/accurate without a lot more

evidence than anecdotal reports. Themore exotic the observation, the more

convincing the evidence has to be to sup-

    port it.

When it comes to astronomical observations one has to remember that or every

Edward Barnard, there are a dozens oPercival Lowells. Suspect images/videos/

observations need conrmation no matter how convinced the observer is that hecould not be mistaken.

    UFOs and anecdotal evidence

Allan Hendry once stated that science

can be initiated by eelings but cannot be based on them. While anecdotaevidence can be used to initiate research

into a new phenomenon, like UFOs, it isusually inadequate by itsel to convince

the scientic community to take it seri-ously. Sure, people are reporting some

thing they dont understand and it mightbe signicant. However, when one looksat the reports and the act that most

UFOlogists admit that 80-90% o themare misperceptions o ordinary phenom

ena, one has to wonder i the remaining10-20% are also misperceived mundane

events that just have not been identied

I have repeatedly pointed out In this

newsletter, methodologies/technologyor gathering data beyond the anecdota

reports that UFOlogy relies upon to maketheir case. As long as UFOlogists rely on

this anecdotal testimony as their primary source o evidence or UFOs beingan exotic phenomenon, their endeavo

to legitimize their research will result in

ailure. It is time or UFOlogys leadingminds to take the next step! What is stopping them?

Editor note: I tried to keep Rogers article intact and

made very ew editorial corrections earing I might edit

out something important. I ask my readers bear withthe syntax issues in order to understand Mr. Paquays

arguments as he presents them. One thing I think is

important to note is that when Roger is discussing the

apparent size o Venus, he is NOT describing the actual

angular size. He is trying to point out that Venus ap-

pears much larger than a star to the casual observer.

    Observations made by 2 gendarmes

    on Wednesday 29 November 1989 .

    T

hese testimonies were the startingpoint o what was called The Belgian

    wave o uos.

On 29 November in the evening, it reezes,

the sun goes down on 16h45, the moonis absent rom the sky, the stars and the

planet Venus are particularly bright. Theatmosphere is very transparent.

We will look at these testimonies withouta priori and with an open mind.

The data we will use came rom VOB1 and

    VOB2 and other sources.

Warning: We point out that we dont

want to negate or invalidate the testimo-

nies rom the gendarmes nor doubt their

good aith or sincerity. They have seen

(observed) something they could not ex-

    plain. Nevertheless, these testimonies con-

tain inormations that can be interpreted

with dierent ways. These ways must be

    investigate and the dierent conclusions

that can outcome may be presented. They

dont constitute an attack against some-

body. One observation was made but youmust look to several possibilities. You must

too keep a critical and open mind.

    Observation 1: EUPEN:

Made by two gendarmes driving romEupen in the direction o Eynatten. At 17h20, rom the car driving on the N68

street Eupen-Eynatten between Kettenisand Merols, the gendarmes see a bright

spot on a grassland at the right side o

the street in the direction SEE. The centre

o the bright spot is situated at 50 meters

rom the street and extent to 20 meterso the street. They drive slowly, window

down when looking to the phenome-non. Nevertheless: The others cars pass

just like i there was nothing abnormal.( VOB1 p 17)

Looking in the air they see an engine, abig platorm with three enormous lights

orming a triangle and directed down. The circular lights emit down three cone-

shaped beams o light that go to theground like spotlights. One gendarme

evaluates ater the altitude o the engineat 120 meters by comparison with theheight o the telecommunication tower

at the Eupen gendarmerie. (height 74meters), the seeing angle and the situ-

ation o the spot in the grassland. Theydeduce the elevation angle is 68 later by

    comparison with a tower..

They see distinctly, they say, the outlines

rom a big dark shape (mass) on the bot-tom o the twilight sky. ( re: A. Delmon:

les cas solides ) The lights are dazzling, the base looks perectly plane. The base

is horizontal and is orming an isoscelestriangle with a wide base. The dimen-sions are estimated 30 to 35 meters or

the length o the base rom the triangleand at 25 meters or the height. The

thickness is two meters. The corners atthe base o the triangle are cut. The di-

ameter o the lights is estimated to onemeter. A red spotlight ashing one to twotimes per second is situated at the centre

o the triangle. No noise seems outpass

the noise o the car engine and the tra-c noise. (VOB1 P 17). So you cannot say :The engine was silent

Nevertheless, in an article edited in thenewspaper Le Soir rom 1 December

1989, it appears they had declared tothe journalist to have heard a weak noise

coming rom the engine, a weak hum-ming like an electrical engine. The esti-

    mated altitude was 300 meters.

In the German edited newspaper Grenz

Echo rom 1 December 1989 the altitudewas between 300 to 400 meters.

Here under a translation o dierent part

    o this text:

...By 17.30, the gendarmerie patrol no

ticed an unknown fying object (Uo),

that approached the city o Eupen

rom the German border. The fyingobject had three strong spotlights tha

were directed toward the ground, the

    object itsel remained hidden behind

    this light...(rst paragraph).

The ying object travelled at an altitude o

300 to 400 metres, almost soundless. Only

a buzzing sound, comparable to that o

a strong electrical motor could be per

ceived. Now and then the object remained

stationary in the sky, while urther rays

o light beamed to the surace. (second

    paragraph)

    Platorm

The ocers rom the Eupen brigade who

watched the Uo, described it as a kind

o platorm, that had two spotlights in

the direction o travel, pointed toward

the ground, while a third light shone a

the back o the object. In between was

    an orange-coloured ashing light. (thirdparagraph)....

The Uo moved steadily over Baelen in the

direction o the Gileppe barrage. Accord

ing to eyewitnesses, it stayed there or

about 45 minutes, beore it disappeared in

    the direction o Spa.(Fourth paragraph)

This translation is in contradiction withthe assertion that the object was ying

at low altitude, without the characteristicnoise o combustion engine.

The engine starts to move parallel to the

street at a speed o 50 km/h, point orward in the same direction o move juslike the gendarmes. Then the gendarmes

stop on the little street between Merolsand Raeren. They see an engine thaseems to stop and go backwards in the

direction o Eupen. It is now 17h 24.

Intrigued by this behavior who couldsuggest an answer to their attempt o

interception, they drive immediately onthe Hochstrasse, a street that skirt round

Kettenis and Eupen at the NW. So, they

can see continuously the engine whenpursuing it discreetly. The engine ight

slowly in the direction o Eupen alongthe N 68. When the gendarmes come on

the street rom Herbestal, they see theengine ying over the town o Eupen.

The lights directed down permit to ol-low it easily.

They enter the casern situated on thestreet o Herbestal at the beginning o

Eupen. They receive an answer romElsenborn where they say there are no

military exercises and an answer romBierset saying there was no AWACS in theair, but dont speak rom the ying Mi-

    rage planes.

They say that rom a window situated atthe rst oor they can see the stopped

engine through the branches o a tree. Itis then 18h.

In Inorespace 95, in the text: Etude ap-

proondie et discussion de certaines ob-servations du 29 novembre 1989 Mees-sen say that, at 18 h the engine was seen

rom the casern at the azimuth 166. Theazimuth 166 is in direction o NE in di-rection o Germany. So the engine had

rst ied in the same direction east thatthe gendarmes then turned in direction

o Eupen and above Eupen. At 18 H it isnow seen ying in the opposite direction

above the Hertogenwald in direction oGermany (anew southeast direction).

Ater 20 minutes theyquit the casern and

the light ollow themin direction o SW,

anew a change in theopposite direction.

    They go away imme-

    diately, but it seems

they stayed 20 min-utes; they drive on

the Hochstrasse andgo in the direction o

Membach. They seeagain the Uo who is

moving in the direc-tion o the barrage oLa Gileppe.

    Analysis:

    The car rom

the witnesses is driv-ing, so it is very difcult to evaluatethe stationary or the displacement o

an air moving engine. Why did theynot stop the car to see the phenom-

enon more close? This would havegiven more precise data that the

data you can obtain when driving onthis street with other vehicles at thishour , 17h 24. The gendarmes him-

sel spoke over the noise o the tra-c. N 68 is indeed the an important

street between Eupen and Aachen (Aix-la-Chapelle). This street is quasi-

parallel with the Hochstrasse , thestreet ollowed by the gendarmes toreturn to Eupen.

    The evaluation o distances, altitude,

speed is impossible in the dark andin the day too without measure in-

struments like laser telemeters andDoppler radar. Here , no measurewas done , they were driving.

The evaluation o the altitude 120

m was made a posteriori. This typeo determination is always aected

a very big uncertainty , the angleswere not measured. In the sky thereare no landmarks. You must remem-

ber in the rst declarations, they situ-ated the altitude between 300 to 400

    m , t
