St. Stephen’s Story May and June 2018
Dear People of God,
In preparation for a 6-week course on grief work in the fall, I wanted to share with you some thoughts and insights. As we experience grief, we recall words from our worship and liturgy: Into your hands, O merciful Savior, we commend your servant. Acknowledge, we humbly beseech thee, a sheep of thine own fold, a lamb of thine own redeeming. We grieve in hope. We hopefully move through the hard work of grief that follows the death of a loved one. This comes with prayers that we will know God’s love, deep within our core,
as we pray and weep and give thanks to God for the life of our beloved who is now as we say changed and in the nearer presence of God.
There are a variety of ways to explore grief and many of my generation worked with the words of Kubler-Ross. Today we have additional means available to us and most recognize that we work to accept the reality of loss. Experience the pain of grief. Adjust to an environment in which the deceased is physically missing. Withdraw emotional energy and reinvest it in other activities and relationships. We further recognize that: Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death, and giving life to those in the tomb. We will spend some time together exploring tools for healing, ideas for journaling, turning points for growth, suggestions for coping through the holidays and other special days. I will make some prayers available for and to you, and of course resources of books, agencies, etc. Until we meet in the fall let us remember: Almighty God, Father of mercies and giver of comfort: Deal graciously, we pray, with all who mourn; that, casting all their care on you, they may know the consolation of your love; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Peace be with you, Rev. Mary

St. Stephen’s Sensational Youth Group The St. Stephen’s youth are rounding out this school year in a big way. Between helping out with the Sunday School musical, assisting in intergenerational services, and attending the Youth Sunday service recognizing Nick Staples for his academic achievements throughout high school and sending him off to college with many well wishes, we will be busy, busy bees in May! In June, we will kick off summer with the EDOK event, Mega Camp Registration form: https://edok.formstack.com/forms/camp2018. Scholarships are available. It is the most looked forward to event of the year! The youth spend an entire week at Camp Wood in Elmdale, KS. The youth play games, meet new friends, and grow deeper in faith with the help of awesome camp staff. We also are looking forward to another great VBS this year. We will be helping decorate for the event, assist in classrooms, and help with the tear down. As always, although our numbers may be small, we still have a lot of drive and desire to participate and assist the church whenever and wherever we can. If you have a service opportunity you’d like to share and get the youth involved in, let us know! We are looking for new ways we can help out in the coming youth/school calendar year!

A big thank you to all who have helped us to achieve our stretch goal of adding $40,000 to this year’s budget. At this writing, we have reached $40,911.13 which allows St. Stephen’s to fund all of the “unfunded” ministries that were announced at the Parish Annual Meeting in January. In March, the Vestry approved a restatement of the 2018 budget including the plan to begin to rebuild our reserves. At the April Vestry
meeting, the Buildings and Grounds Committee was asked to prepare (or refresh) a prioritized list of projects that continue to be necessary. Some things on the list will be wished-for items, but many are necessary and additional funding will likely be sought. The Finance Committee and the Vestry are watching our expenses very carefully and will strive to live within our means for the rest of the year. We know there will be surprises, however, so we will keep you advised monthly on our financial condition. I am pleased to serve as Treasurer for such a committed and generous congregation.

Let us present the 3rd Annual Sunday School:
The Musical “I AM A PROMISE” Sunday, May 6th
at the 10:30 service.
Please continue to keep Aubrey Watson, our organist, and his family in your prayers as he goes through a long rehab process following surgery on his right thumb.
In the following months, we will be welcoming a rotation of keyboardists to assist us with our 10:30 am worship service throughout the summer and early fall if necessary. We are thankful that a number of people have answered the call to lend their talents and gifts to us and look forward to the wide variety of special musical offerings they will share with us in the coming Sundays.

Vacation Bible School is FAST approaching. It is for children 3 years through 5th
grade. This year the hours will be 9:00 am to noon and lunch is included.
“Be on the lookout for Vacation Bible School Volunteer Signup sheets and Donation lists posted in the parish hall.” Volunteer and extra supplies sign up sheets are posted on the bulletin board in the Parish Hall. Food donation sign up sheets will be posted at the beginning of June—Mike Floyd has
volunteered to “head up” the Kitchen Kanteen Krew. If you can share one morning during the week, donate one item, give a monetary donation, shop for items, help with decorating,
undecorating, or even spread the word, this is an important ministry of our congregation and volunteering is a direct way to HELP! A registration form is on the following page or registration can be completed on our web site: ststephensec.org. Priority registration for St. Stephen’s children, register early! If you have questions, please call or email Ashley Winters, 785-393-1546, [email protected] or contact the Parish Office.

As you shop at Dillon's you can support St. Stephen’s as your charity by using your Dillon's Reward’s Card. We receive quarterly donations
for every dollar you spend. It’s a simple as enrolling your Dillon’s Rewards card in the Community Rewards and selecting St. Stephen’s (#88504) as your charity, go to their web site. Your Dillon’s Rewards
fuel points or coupons are unaffected but “rewards” our parish! If you are enrolled, check your receipt to make sure St. Stephen’s is reflected
(see below). Questions, call the Parish Office.
Look for this notation at the bottom of your receipt “At your request Dillon's is donating to
“St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church”.
Do you like to read interesting books and have titillating conversation? “A Gentleman in Moscow” is our current one and we will finish the year with “The Great Divorce” by CS Lewis. If you do, join us every Thursday at noon in the Fireside Room now -- or next year. (We will take a summer break for June, July and August
and start meeting again after Labor Day.) It’s a great group of devoted readers who are committed to taking on challenging books and engaging in stimulating discussions. We share a love of reading, good fellowship -- and every third week the meeting includes eating out together as a group. We welcome new members (and former members who’d like to return). You can contact Mary Sloan for more information at [email protected] or 785-230-4729 (cell).
DOK (Daughters of the King) are happy to report that we sold Jane Taylor’s Anglican rosaries at our Spring Assembly. We made enough to donate $120 to ESS. We have formed a task force and it will meet this summer in hopes of forming a Junior DOK chapter. The age range for Junior Daughters of the King is 7 to 21. The purpose is to encourage girls to grow in their relationship to Jesus Christ through personal and group prayer and Bible study. The older Daughters will provide a loving supportive Christian community to encourage Junior Daughters to love and serve our Lord. If this interests you, please contact Lora White. ([email protected]) We invite all adult women of the church, wherever you are in your Christian journey, to prayerfully consider becoming a Daughter of the King. We will resume our meetings in September on the third Sunday of each month. Contact Melanie Shurden ([email protected]) if you are interested in becoming a Daughter or have any questions. Thank you.
