Call to Confession

Silent Confession

Prayer of Confession

O God of all our days and seasons, in this time of expectation, we find it difficult to watch and wait for your appearing in our lives. We long for joy and compassion to be born in us, and yet we do not take time to ponder what it means that you came among us in Jesus, to live life as we must, and to show us what a fully human life looks like. Forgive us. By your Spirit, help us let go of that which is not essential, that we might meet the Christ who is coming to claim and transform us. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

WE GIVE THANKS TO GOD

Invitation to Discipleship

A SERVICE OF HOLY COMMUNION AND

WHOLENESS

10:35 a.m. in Milner Chapel Rev. Meagan P. Findeiss

ANTHEMLet all mortal flesh keep silence, and with fear and trembling stand; Ponder nothing earthly-minded, for with blessing in his hand, Christ our God to earth descendeth, our full homage to demand.

King of kings, yet born of Mary, as of old on earth he stood, Lord of lords, in human vesture, in the Body and the Blood; He will give to all the faithful His own Self for heavenly food.

Rank on rank the host of heaven spreads its vanguard on the way, As the light of light descendeth from the realms of endless day, That the pow’rs of hell may vanish as the darkness clears away.

At his feet the six-winged seraph, Cherubim with sleepless eye, Veil their faces to the presence, as with ceaseless voice they cry: Ah, Lord Most High. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYEROur Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

“SOWING SEEDS, NURTURING POSSIBILITIES”

So far, almost 700 households have committed nearly $2.9 million toward the 2019 budget. Thank you! Nearly every ministry and activity of the church (including those most meaningful to you!) are supported by this budget. Have you set a giving goal and made a pledge? Another $400,000 - $500,000 in giving goals from 200 households would provide fertile soil for next year’s ministries. Commitment cards are in the pew racks and also at SecondChurch.org/Give.

For details about these and other upcoming 2PC events, visit our website or Like us on Facebook. Also be sure to pick up a copy of the monthly newsletter, available in the atrium, narthex, and locations around the church.

WE GO FORTH TO SERVE

* Closing Hymn #1 Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus STUTTGART

* Charge and Benediction

* Benediction Response Song of Simeon LAND OF REST

Lord, bid Your servant go in peace, Your word is now fulfilled. These eyes have seen salvation’s dawn, This child so long foretold.

* Postlude Finale Marcel Dupré (from Variations on a Noël, Op. 20)

Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus rings with the echoes of biblical memory and human hope. We remember Christ’s first coming even while praying for his return. Stanza 1 echoes advent prophecies from the Old Testament. Messianic terms are recalled: “Israel’s strength,” “consolation,” “hope,” “desire of all nations,” and “joy.” Stanza 2 speaks of Christ’s birth and kingdom. Jesus was born a King. But his kingship is not of this world; it is exercised in human hearts and lives. It is this emphasis on the need for Christ to enter our lives that gives the hymn its advent character. Fittingly, it ends with this prayer: By Thine own eternal Spirit Rule in all our hearts alone; By Thine all-sufficient merit Raise us to Thy glorious throne. We sing this hymn to the tune Hyfrydol which in the Welsh language means “Good Cheer.”
