Worship Service – Sundays at 9:00am; Sunday School at 10:30am God’s work. Our hands.

APRIL, 2012

A Note from Pastor Dan

The call process continues to go well. The Call Committee, chaired by Nannette Giberson, met

the candidate April 15th. They listened to the candidate preach and lead worship as well as

meeting with them for an in-depth interview. The Call Committee has recommended the

Page 3: Sunday Worship 9:00 am, Sunday School 10:30 am, We give ... · The second line which reads: ― 1 cup water or chicken broth plus on 1 cup for the pot‖ should read ―1 cup of water

candidate to the Church Council. Now the Council will arrange an interview and, if that goes

favorably, arrange for the congregation to meet the candidate and vote on whether to call that

person as pastor of Bethel. Please continue to keep this whole process of discernment in your

prayers!

In one of my sermons, I mentioned that Bethel means "House of God." (Beth = house; el =

God) As we continue the call process we remember that we are stewards in the house of God.

We care for this particular house of God in every way: physical maintenance, financial well

being, peopling its pews and ministries, partnering with one another and with its pastor when

one is called. What a tremendous privilege God places in our hands. And we carry out this

privilege in a particular way: the way of Grace. Whether we are gathering around Word and

Sacrament, baking (delicious) cinnamon buns for fellowship hour, checking on a sick member,

welcoming a visitor, fund-raising in the community, mowing the lawn… we do it all as God's

people, God's stewards. We do it all with Grace. We do it all to the Glory of God! May Bethel

always give Glory to God as it moves with grace into God's new future in this place.

Please continue to keep Bethel, the Call Committee, the Council and the potential candidate in

your prayers!

In Christ,

Pastor Daniel Rumfelt

School News BETHEL SCHOLARSHIP Once again we will be offering college scholarships to local students for the 2012-2013

academic year. The applications will be available at church and at area schools. Applicants

will need to submit the completed application along with a recommendation from a member of

Bethel by June 4th.

This scholarship fund honors Gretchen Shavalier, a former teacher and member of Bethel, and

is awarded to students who exemplify Gretchen's love of God, education and service to others.

Please encourage the high school seniors and continuing college students you know to request

an application.

Troy Giberson went on a special trip in March. Following is a brief article he wrote about that

trip.

These are the details about my hunting trip to Lasater White Lodge in San Angelo, Texas. We

traveled by plane which I have done before, but not without any family with me. We left

February 20th and came back on February 25th which was a day late. We arrived a day late

back in New York because of delayed flights which made us miss the connecting flight to

Buffalo. I heard about the Cuba Rushford Outdoor Club through a friend who had already gone

on a trip with them. Then, I contacted Scott Jordan and he told me I was able to go with them.

There were two other students on the trip plus Scott Jordan, our teacher. While I was at the

lodge I had a great time with my guide Michael Newton. I got an 8 point buck, a whitetail doe,

and a grey fox. I was able to keep the hides which I took to a taxidermist when I got home.

Scott takes students every year on trips ranging from Texas to New Zealand. Any students are

able to go on the trip as long as there are open spots on the trip.

SYRACUSE — Thanks to their success over a previous weekend, two Wellsville teams will be trying to raise

money to go to Odyssey of the Mind world competition May 23 to 26 in Ames, Iowa.

Immaculate Conception School’s team of Jonathon Piscitelli, Eoin Hart, Danielle Gilfert, Isabella Steadman,

Jacob Bierman, Shannon Nye and Sean Whitehouse earned a first place in the Ooh-Motional Vehicle

competition. The OM state competition took place Saturday in Syracuse.

―They had to build a vehicle that a team member would ride in,‖ said coach Becky Catino.

Catino said the team used a pedal and crank as one of the energy sources.

―Then they had an electric motor as the second source of energy. The vehicle also had to travel backwards,‖ she

said. ―Their performance was based on the board game Clue. There was a murder mystery and the emotions

went along with the board game.‖

Catino said all teams had eight minutes to complete their problems.

―I thought they did a wonderful job,‖ she said of her team. ―They gave the best performance they ever gave,

even though they had a little mechanical problem during the performance.‖

Catino said the team will now be busy trying to raise money for the OM world tournament.

―We’re looking at raising close to $10,000. We’re having a chicken barbecue and raffling an ipad 3. Those

drawings are going to be May 3. The chicken barbecue will be May 3 also,‖ she said, adding that anyone

looking for information on those fundraisers should call the school.

SYNOD ASSEMBLY Friday & Saturday

June 8th

& 9th

at the Rochester convention center.

[Because it begins 9 am Friday, some may choose

to go up Thursday. There will be some Thursday

evening activities for early arrivals.] A great time

of learning about the mission of the church,

worship, bible study and building new relationships.

The Assembly theme is Mobile for Mission.

These assemblies each require two voting members

from each congregation. If the same people can go

to both it is helpful but not mandatory. If more than

two wish to go to the SW Conference Assembly,

you are always welcome.

YOUTH MINISTRY Our Southwestern Conference organizes joint activities for youth groups. Although we no longer have a formal youth group, here's an opportunity for our teens to worship together, participate in service activities, and have a little fun. Some of the activities are for high school students only, but most events are for fifth grade and up. Information on upcoming events can be found at www.younglutherans.blogspot.com Also on this site are lots of articles and

information for teachers, mentors and parents. Check it out!

Happy 100th Birthday

Signe Johnson Please note that her birthday is

June 2, 2012. We would like to

see if we can send her at least

100 cards, one for each year. Her baptismal certificate and her sister

Selma’s certificate are hanging in the

fellowship hall in the original Swedish and

an English translation.

This is a surprise, don’t tell her.

STEWARDSHIP

There is a story of a lady who had difficulties

speaking clearly. So, when she was asked to be a

greeter and welcome worshipers on Sundays, she

wanted to say no.

Her thinking led her to the story of Moses. She

remembered that when God called Moses to lead

the Jews out of Egypt, he tried to dodge the

responsibility. Moses reminded the Lord that he

had a speech impediment and could not properly

carry out what God desired him to do. God told

Moses that he wanted Moses to do the job and that

he would help him to achieve the task. The lady, who was asked to be a greeter,

decided that she would give it a try. After all, even if she were totally mute, she

could communicate lovingly by a winsome smile and a warm handshake.

Her story is a reminder God can use each of us in one way or another. Christian

stewardship means being willing to use any and all of the gifts God has given us or

will give us to enhance the kingdom of God on earth.

Jesus gave us his mandate in the 5th chapter of Matthew: ―You are the light of

the world. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel, but on the lamp

stand and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine

before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father

in heaven.‖;

Prayer: Loving God, giver of every good and perfect gift, help us to use the light

you give us to repel the darkness of sin and evil and to make our world to be as you

desire it to be in our Lord’s name, Amen

Upcoming event – Stewardship committee:

Saturday – May 12th

---4:30 p.m.---“Women of the Church Dinner” .

The Stewardship Committee has organized an ongoing committee to iniate a card shower where the congregation would be invited to send a note, card, or make a phone call to those members who need encouragement due to job loss, major surgery, ongoing illness and or because of a life tragedy.
