2017. That number is really hard to believe. How can it be 2017 already? With this new year we are ready to get back to learning and put our preparations for Kindergarten in full gear. Children will begin learning how to write their names. They will learn their addresses and phone numbers. There is a lot to do between now and June. Another big part of January 2017 is registration for the 2017/2018 school year. We begin registration on January 5th for current families and church members and then we open up to the community on the 11th. Please spread the word. The current Registration Forms are available on the preschool website and in the preschool.

2017 marks the 500th Anniversary of when Martin Luther posted his 95 Theses. Few figures in history are as influential or divisive as Martin Luther. How did one monk at the edge of the German Empire divide the Church and completely alter the course of Western history? Word and Image: Martin Luther's Reformation is a display at the Morgan Library & Museum, New York on view through January 22, 2017, highlighting a few pieces and the overall themes of the Reformation movement that Luther started.
The printing and distribution of Luther’s Ninety-Five Theses against the sale of indulgences initiated a movement that would not have been possible before the invention of movable type. The Reformation engaged authors, artists, politicians, priests, and printers throughout Europe in a battle over religious doctrine—a subject previously relegated to a select few. Luther and his colleagues expertly employed the still relatively new technology of the printing press to communicate to the masses, and master artists elaborated their texts with woodcut imagery. Artists also created independent works of art to depict and spread the reformer’s message. Authors and artists on both sides of the Reformation produced an avalanche of material for mass consumption. The Reformation was a fight over religious belief that was won by means of successful communication through word and image.
Please plan a trip with your family to explore the rich history and get a better understanding of what it means to be Lutheran.
The Morgan Museum is located at 225 Madison Avenue at 36th Street, New York, NY 10016. Just a short walk from Grand Central and Penn Station.
Zion Men’s Group
Our next meeting, which will include a devotion and breakfast, will be Saturday morning January 8th, at 8:00am.
Please come join us
1 Peter 3:15–16 15but in your hearts regard Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; 16yet do it with gentleness and respect, having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame.
Let us know if you need help with
anything…
One of our missions is to be a resource for member in the congregation. If you need assistance moving
furniture, getting something out of the attic, etc. Just reach out to Ed Sitler, at: 908 709-9079
([email protected]) and he will circulate it to the group for volunteers.
Using Our Spiritual Gifts
Spiritual gifts are a divine enablement given to believers by the Holy
Spirit for the building up of God’s Church. A spiritual gift is a God-
given ability or skill which we do not deserve, cannot earn, and cannot
achieve through our own efforts. Each of us is given at least one gift,
and we are responsible to use it in our service to the Body of Christ.
“To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good”
(1 Corinthians 12:7).
In 1 Corinthians 12, Paul compared Christians who are given different
spiritual gifts to members of a human body. Each member has a
different function, but all are needed for the health of the body. All
parts are needed for the body to function. The same concept is seen in
athletic teams. Each player on a basketball team has a specific position
and responsibility. The guards are chosen for their quickness and
agility to dribble the ball down the court. The forwards and centers,
gifted with height, are responsible for rebounding and blocking shots
from the opponent. All of them desire to get that ball through their
basket and combine their talents in
that endeavor. Each team member
plays a unique role and is valuable
to the team. If one of them fails to
contribute, the whole team suffers;
yet, if one is ill or injured, others
step up their game
The same is true of each Christian.
God has given us each a spiritual
gift (or gifts), and that gift is
important to the Body of Christ.
God has given us gifts so we can
use them to His glory in His Church. When we do not use what God
has given us, the whole body suffers.
Blessings on your stewardship journey!

"Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow;
though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool” Isaiah 1:18
As I am writing this there is no snow on the ground yet. We had
a day of snow, but I know that more will be coming soon! Many of us
enjoy to watch the snow as it falls, and we watch it from our windows.
But most of us don’t like all the effects of snow after it falls and sticks
to the ground. When snow is on the ground we no longer can walk
outside without putting on shoes, coats, hats, and gloves. When snow is
on the ground the roads are hard to drive on, and we are reluctant to get
out of our house. Before long the snow is no longer beautiful and
white, but it is muddy, dirty, and all over the place.
Snow is a great illustration of our lives as Christians. When we
were first created we were beautiful and perfect. Adam and Eve were
created in Paradise and lived perfect, holy lives. They were like the
snow that fell from the sky; pure, wholesome, perfect.
Then Adam and Eve fell into sin, and each of us since have
been born into a world full of sin. We became filthy, dirty, and sinful;
like the snow after it falls and get trampled on by our feet. We no
longer are pure, clean, and beautiful; rather now we are sinful and
fallen.
The verse above fixes everything. The verse above describes
that even though we are filthy and sinful; we have become once again
as white as snow. The baby born in Bethlehem, as we just have
celebrated Christmas, also paid for our sins on the cross. The blood that
he shed for us has made us clean and whole again.
January is often seen as another chance to ‘start all over’ as well. It is a
new year and a new chance to start over. What spiritual ‘resolutions’
can you set for yourself to accomplish over this next year? May God
give you the strength and the patience to accomplish what he has called
you to do, and to live your life as a child of God. To HIM be the glory.
I will be attending the March for Life in Washington D.C. on January 27. I invite you to join me, we can carpool to Washington for the day. There should be no need to spend the night unless you personally want too.
In Christ, Nathan Grewe
