October is one of those months that we fo-cus devotion on Mary, with her many titles — Mother of God, Tower of Ivory, Lady of Per-petual Help, etc.

We seldom think of Mary, however, as Moth-er of the Word of God. Jesus is God’s Word become Flesh. She is mother of that Blessed Word!

How ironic that we usually think of Mary as the woman wrapped in silence, keeping every-thing in her heart, not saying much. How could Mother of the Word remain silent?

When we survey the Gospels, we find that the Blessed Mother often spoke, and her words car-ried weight. She interrogates the angel Gabriel, asking how she will have a baby. She speaks in poetic verses when greeted by Elizabeth, her cousin. It is Mary who speaks up and asks the

child Jesus who had left Joseph and Mary for three days in Jerusalem, “My child, why have

you done this to us?”Mary is the one to talk

up the need for Jesus to work a miracle at the Wedding in Cana — “Son, they have no more wine.”

She must have spoken to Christ upon the cross those three hours — for He spoke to her while dy-ing for us.

Tradition tells us Mary prayed with the early

Church at the first Pentecost. Mary, whom we honor during October, was

a woman of silence, sorrow and contemplation

— but also a woman of words, joy and action. She was a woman of the Word who gave her word, “Yes,” so that the Word could become Flesh and dwell among us.The saints

The saints are who they are, not because the gift of sainthood makes it possible for them to admire everybody else.

It gives them a clarity of compassion that can find good in the most terrible criminals. It de-livers them from the burden of judging others, condemning others. It teaches them to bring the good out of others by compassion, mercy and pardon.

We become saints, not by conviction that we are better than sinners, but by the realization that we are one of them, and that altogether we need the mercy of God.

The church begins November with the feasts of All Saints and All Souls.

In our parish we have traditionally regarded the entire month as a time of remembrance for our beloved deceased. We end November by celebrating Thanksgiving and the beginning of the Advent season.

During November, while we still endure the effects of the pandemic, we will sing a new peaceful and prayerful version of the Lord’s Prayer. We dedicate this prayer to the memory

of those we have lost to death, and we pray for those in our world who suffer in so many ways.

This piece was suggested several years ago by our young people who were inspired by it during their trips to Notre Dame University in Indiana.

This piece can also be found on the parish website. Here are two links (you can type them into your browser or visit our website to listen to them):

A guide for music selections and a guide for funeral reading selections can be found on the parish website under FUNERAL SERVICE PLANNING

WeddingsWedding music can be selected with the help

of our wedding planning guide found on the par-ish website under WEDDING PLANNING.

Prayer Remembrance policy

• Prayer Remembrances must be sub-mitted two weeks in advance of the de-sired publication date. Those received this weekend will reach the parish office in time to be placed in the bulletin two weeks from now. • You must use ONE envelope for each Mass intention. To ensure that all your intentions are listed as requested, please do not write multiple intentions on one envelope as oftentimes names are inad-vertently omitted. • A $5 minimum donation is requested for each intention, please. • If you have a prayer intention that you would like parishioners to pray for, please call Pattie Franco at 733-4210. She and members of our prayer line will be glad to pray for you.

Memorials• The sanctuary lamps are lit in memory of Tom DeCrescenzo Sr. by Marie Wojnas.• The gospel light is lit for in memory of Joseph and Magdalen Suppa by Rosema-rie.• The St. Marianne Cope candle is lit in memory of Sister Prisca Dardano by Ricky Caruso.• The St. Joseph candle is lit in memory of 65th wedding anniversary of Steve and Marge Cimino by Grace DeCrescenzo and family.

Prayer for World SurrenderLord, you sympathize with our weakness.

You know our doubts and fears. You hold us close when we stumble and fall.Whenever we fail to proclaim your love in what we say and do. From your servant

throne, give us grace for timely help.Help us find ways to end violence

and prejudice, to work together to end these days of pandemic, to find the common thread

of love and humanity that unite us as one people-no matter our race or politics.

May we learn to better surrenderour ambitions that only divide us — our selfish opinions and decisions for personal freedoms

that sever our relationships and break our bonds. May we discover the rewards of true

freedom to which you call us — freedom that comes from our boundless loving and our generous service. Amen.

Prayer of the faithfulResponse: Lord, hear your people’s prayer.• For the Church and all who minister within the Church. May we learn to surrender our fears, ambitions, ego and power. May our mod-eling as servants help the world to find healing.

We ask: Lord, hear your people’s prayer.

• For those who face difficulty and hardship. For people overwhelmed by the pressures of life — the hungry; the abandoned; the addict-ed; the unemployed; immigrants; and all who

cope with COVID, with death or disaster. Inspire us to find ways to serve those who need us.

We ask: Lord, hear your people’s prayer.• For leaders in the church, government and enterprise. And for all who have power over other people. May they center their values, decisions and action on the common good and to benefit the needy.

We ask: Lord, hear your people’s prayer.• In thanksgiving for those who dedicate their lives to serving others — in the church; gov-ernment; the military; in areas of social justice, medicine and education. May their dedication to goodness and service be strengthened and reaffirmed.

We ask: Lord, hear your people’s prayer.• In thanksgiving to God for our parish family. In this year of jubilee, we ask God’s continued grace upon us. Help us to reach out more ef-fectively to the poor and to all who need to strengthen their faith.

We ask: Lord, hear your people’s prayer.• For an end to violence and prejudice. For a deeper commitment from all people to create a peaceful world. For our beloved sick, dying and grieving, and for the personal intentions we hold in silence …

We ask: Lord, hear your people’s prayer.
