Willowwood Update:

DEER Fence:Preventing deer browse to the Wil-lowwood gardens and plant collections is an ongoing challenge! While the entire 130 acre property is en-closed within a perimeter fence, Last October the a deer exclusion infrastructure underwent a significant upgrade when 3,300 feet of aging fence was replaced by a new high-tensile fence along the western (Bamboo Brook) boundary. This new fence is eight feet high and was constructed using 12.5 gauge tensioned black woven wire affixed to pressure-treated wooden posts that were driven thirty-six inches into the ground. This replaces a rusted and worn out fence that was constructed of six-foot woven wire topped with three strands of barbed wire. The old fence was in such poor condition that deer could enter the arboretum by jumping over, crawling under, or simp-ly pushing on the rusted wire until it parted.

This marks the first phase of upgrading the entire perimeter deer fence. Future phases will address the northern, eastern, and southern fence sec-tions and the entrance cattle guard. Funding was provided by the Morris County Park Commission Park Improvement Trust.

The staff is very pleased with the new fence and is looking forward to devoting more time to gardening rather than preventing deer browse!

Staff News: Jeanne Lardino, WW Assistant Gar-dener, was promoted to Gardener and will now be working at the Frelinghuysen gardens. Kate Gutierrez, Horticulture Volunteer Coordinator, retired early last year. Patti Millar, the new part-time Horticulture Volun-teer Program Coordinator, will be responsible for lead-ing the weekly hands-on “in-the-garden” volunteer ses-sions at Willowwood, Bamboo Brook &Frelinghuysen as well as coordinating corporate volunteer groups.

Seasonal Gardeners & Interns Openings at Willowwood

and Freling-huysen Ar-

boreta

Seasonal gardener positions for those with experience in horticulture or gardening are available now at the Arboreta for the 2016 growing season. Gardeners participate in all aspects of garden and arboretum management including planting, mulching, watering, weeding, prun-ing, fertilizing, mowing, propagat-ing, and record keeping. Gardeners must have professional gardening experience.

Internship Program: Each year the Willowwood Foundation helps an individual(s) obtain practical hands on gardening experience by funding an internship at WW. The 2015 intern recipient was Hayden Coakley. Beginning early spring through late fall (may run for 3 to 8 months), paid Interns (full- or part-time) are admitted on an as needed basis and must possess a keen in-terest in horticulture and enjoy working outdoors. Interns rotate through specialty gardens and col-lections and may select an area of concentration.

To learn more about each program, or if interested, send cover letter and resume to Patti Millar, Morris County Park Commission, PO Box 1295, Morristown, NJ 07962 or email: [email protected] or call 973.326.7629 The Morris Co. Park Commission is an equal opportunity employer.

Party Dates still open! Contact MCPC Event Specialist Chris Knox at 973-326-7619 or [email protected] for more details.

Experience the ultimate party venue! Trees with twinkling lights surround the WW Stone Barn or your own private tent with room for dancing, creating a mag-ical setting for any “very special” event. The Seasonal Gardens are glorious and perfect for photo ops. Willowwood or Bam-boo Brook with its beautiful reflecting pools can be the setting for your perfect par-ty—wedding, birthday, anniversary, etc.

A few dates still available in 2016 but now booking 2017 and 2018.
