The One Who Feeds on Me Will Have Life Because of Me – The Gospel readings these weeks focus our hearts and minds on the Eucharist, the source and summit of the life and mission of the Church and the central mystery of our faith. The Eucharist as the source of life is true both for us as individuals who are fed by Jesus in Holy Communion and strengthened for the work to which God calls us, as well as for the Church as the Body of Christ as together we reflect the love of God in the world. There would be

no Catholic Church without the Eucharist, nor would we be able to share in the life of God without his real and true presence in our lives. Our efforts On Mission for The Church Alive! are meant to draw us ever deeper into the mystery of the Eucharist so that we may be built up as the Body of Christ in the world. May our lives and our faith be nourished through our participation in this most wonderful sacrament. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed.

FAMILY CONFESSIONS Circumstances this past week required me to think about our “family confessions,” a roughly monthly event introduced to the parish by Claire and Russell Giancola. Like many parents raising small children, they were facing challenges getting to confession. The kids didn’t much like sitting in a dark church while their parents waited in line. They always had the option of splitting up—sending Mom to confession while Dad watched the kids, and letting Dad go to confession during working hours downtown—but then the children never got to see Dad going to confession, and that made it easier for them to balk at it when they reached 2nd grade. Moreover, they were often the only kids in line, and it made them think they didn’t belong. So the Giancolas created “family confessions”: More or less monthly, they picked a Saturday morning confessions hour and made it an opportunity for fun and fellowship. Together with the Yost family, they hosted snacks, toys, and games in the St. Maximilian Kolbe Room. Parents pooled their childcare duties while some went to confession, and the kids could go at their leisure during a break from their play. Both families report that the idea has made it a lot easier for the children to appreciate the sacrament of penance. The next such opportunity is this Saturday, August 25, from 11:00 to 12:00 noon.

In my ongoing series, I wish to note my gratitude for a spirit of collaboration among political and community leaders of our neighborhood over the nine years I’ve been pastor here. While it’s easy to take a cynical attitude toward such people—as with priests, they typically only get into the news when something’s gone wrong—but in fact most of them, most of the time, are trying hard to do what’s best for the community. Here I especially thank former Carnegie Mayor (now District Magistrate) Jack Kobistek, Mayor Stacie Riley, Councilor Sue Demko, Carnegie Borough Manager Steve Beuter, Scott Commissioner Eileen Meyers, aides in the offices of Congressmen Murphy and Lamb, local proprietor and neighbor Philip Salvato, the Rev. Dr. John Kent, the Rev. Fr. Jason Charron, and the late Bob Marshall of Bob’s Diner. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to collaborate with each of them and many more.

Jesus said to them,... “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life,

and I will raise him on the last day...whoever eats this bread will live forever.” ~ John 6:53-58

Stop and think. Prayerfully ask the Holy Spirit to bring to mind all of the people - family members, loved ones, colleagues, coworkers, neighbors - in your life who do not partake of the body and blood of Jesus. Bet you’ll be sadly surprised at the high number you come up with, the number of people you care about who “do not have life within” them. Now, ask the Holy Spirit to suggest to you who, among all of those, might have ‘ears to hear’ about how important Church and God are to you. It may only be one or two, but that one, or those two, could bring a few others to Christ after they find (or re-find) him. Finally, ask the Holy Spirit to create an opening for you to be able to influence them toward the importance of getting their lives, their souls, in order. Remember, we have RCIA, other Adult Formation opportunities, and many ministry options to help them find their place here at Church, as well as great sacramental and liturgical events where they can meet God. But they probably won’t ever come if you don’t invite them!

...the same Lord is Lord of all, enriching all who call upon him. For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” But how can they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how can they believe in him of whom they have not heard?

And how can they hear without someone to preach? And how can people preach unless they are sent?

As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring [the] good news!” ~ Romans 10: 12b-15

IT'S TIME TO GET ON THE BUS! We at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton have secured our bus for The 2018 Diocesan Pilgrimage to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. The pilgrimage is Saturday, September 15, and is a day trip. The cost for each person is $75 including one boxed meal on the way home that evening. You will want to plan to bring additional funds for

purchasing lunch upon arrival, gifts at the Basilica gift shop, tip for the bus driver, etc. If you've never done this pilgrimage before, know that it's a wonderful experience! We are looking for commitment and payment immediately, as the trip is just around the corner, and will be here before we know it! Checks should be made payable to “SEAS Parish” with “9/15/18 pilgrimage” in notation section. We still have seats and we want to fill the bus. Why go on a pilgrimage? A pilgrimage is a journey one takes to a sacred place, usually with a ‘special intention’, in supplication for a particular petition (perhaps for some type of healing), as an act of thanksgiving, or merely to strengthen one’s faith. Pilgrims make these trips not so much as a sightseeing tour, but more as a prayer, and as a quest to encounter the Lord. Pilgrimages to shrines and other holy places can serve as a reminder to us that our entire lives on earth are a pilgrimage on our way to heaven. Join us! Your contact for commitment and/or questions is Tess Keddie, 412-276-1011 ext. 221 or [email protected]. Please leave your name, email address, mail address, and phone number.

CONTEMPLATIVE PRAYER GROUP

St. John of the Cross tells us, “The language God hears best is silent love”; therefore, John advises us, “Preserve a loving attentiveness to God” (Sayings of Light and Love 132, 88). If you feel drawn to practicing silent attention to God in an intentional way, you may wish to join the contemplative prayer group that will be meeting occasionally beginning this Fall. We will engage in reflective reading of scripture together, alternating with times of silence and stillness. Our gathering times will be based on the participants’ availability. If you are interested, please contact Tess Keddie or Steve Geitgey.

SEAS SUBSTANCE ADDICTION MINISTRY (SAM) We meet on the third Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. in Room 7 of the Bayley building. Our meeting lasts one hour. Our August meeting is Tuesday, August 21. Our rosary for recovery precedes the meeting in the Immaculate Conception Chapel at 6:30 p.m. All are welcome to attend. We especially invite parishioners from SS. Simon & Jude and St. Margaret of Scotland to explore S.A.M. This is a “no prior experience required” ministry. The only requirement is a desire to help others. We also want to take this time to thank those who helped us with our 4 part speaker series this past June. In particular we wish to thank our speakers, Nancy and Bruce Shea (“Six Steps to Sanity”); Fran Campbell (“Understanding Physical Addiction”, and “ What Happens in Treatment Programs”); and Fr. Jocelyn Gregoire, C.S.SP., (“The Twelve Step Program and Spirituality”). For those interested, the next 12 week session for Six Steps to Sanity will begin on Wednesday, September 19, at St. Louise de Marillac social hall from 7-8:30 p.m. Interested persons should call St. Louise de Marillac Parish at 412-833-1010. 12 Step programs are based upon three pertinent ideas: a) We have an addiction and cannot manage our own lives; b) No human power can relieve us of our addiction; c) God could and would if He were sought.

SUMMER MOVIE NIGHT ON FRIDAY, AUGUST 24 One of the greatest modern Christian apologists, C.S. Lewis shared the logic and rational thought that led him to abandon atheism and return to Christianity in numerous books of theology, including his seminal work, Mere Christianity. At our August Summer Movie Night, we will be watching the film "The Shortest Way Home: C.S. Lewis and Mere Christianity.” The movie is a concise and fascinating introduction to this classic, Ecumenical work on issues of faith and reason. It provides an honest discussion and helpful insights for the tough questions asked by believers and skeptics alike. Join us on August 24, 2018, at SS. Simon and Jude Parish at 7:00 p.m. to view the film and enjoy refreshments and discussion afterward!

FAMILY PROMISE AT SSJ: We will welcome our next guest families the week of September 9 through 16. If you would like to help with this ministry to families who are homeless, please contact Laura at (412) 563-3189, ext. 204 or [email protected]. All Disciples of Mercy who have participated in this ministry and all who have interest in helping are cordially invited to a training and fellowship session in the Church Hall on Wednesday, August 15 at 6:30 p.m. We will have refreshments, get to meet the entire Coordination team and other volunteers, and grow in our ministry through a new and improved 90 minute video training provided by Family Promise. Laundry Help Needed: our dedicated Laundry Coordinator is on vacation in September. We need someone willing to coordinate the laundry being done after our guests leave on September 16. Because this role does not involve direct interaction with our guests, Safe Environment Clearances are not necessary. Please contact Laura if you are willing to step in and help with this critical role!
