TWO MASTERS
1 He also said to His disciples: “There was a certain rich man who had a steward, and an accusation was brought to him that this man was wasting his goods. 2 So he called him and said to him, ‘What is this I hear
about you?
Luke 16:1-15 (NKJV)
Give an account of your stewardship, for you can no longer be steward.’ 3 “Then the steward said within himself, ‘What shall I
do? For my master is taking the stewardship away from me. I cannot dig; I
am ashamed to beg.
Luke 16:1-15 (NKJV)
4 I have resolved what to do, that when I am put out of the stewardship, they may
receive me into their houses.’ 5 “So he called every one of his master’s debtors to him, and said to the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’ 6 And he said, ‘A
hundred measures of oil.’
Luke 16:1-15 (NKJV)
So he said to him, ‘Take your bill, and sit down quickly and write fifty.’ 7 Then he said to another, ‘And how much do you
owe?’ So he said, ‘A hundred measures of wheat.’ And he said to him, ‘Take your bill,
and write eighty.’
Luke 16:1-15 (NKJV)
8 So the master commended the unjust steward because he had dealt shrewdly.
For the sons of this world are more shrewd in their generation than the sons of light. 9 “And I say to you, make friends for yourselves by unrighteous mammon,
that when you fail,
Luke 16:1-15 (NKJV)
they may receive you into an everlasting home. 10 He who is faithful in what is least
is faithful also in much; and he who is unjust in what is least is unjust also in
much. 11 Therefore if you have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches?
Luke 16:1-15 (NKJV)
12 And if you have not been faithful in what is another man’s, who will give you what is
your own? 13 “No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one
and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You
cannot serve God and mammon.”
Luke 16:1-15 (NKJV)
14 Now the Pharisees, who were lovers of money, also heard all these things, and
they derided Him. 15 And He said to them, “You are those who justify yourselves
before men, but God knows your hearts. For what is highly esteemed among men is
an abomination in the sight of God.
Luke 16:1-15 (NKJV)
“Money is a great servant, but a bad master.”
- Sir Francis Bacon -
But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of
themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their
parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good,
2 Timothy 3:1-5
4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God—5 having a form of godliness but denying
its power. Have nothing to do with such people.
2 Timothy 3:1-5
Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve… But as for me and my
household, we will serve the LORD.
Joshua 24:15
1) GOD WILL HOLD YOU ACCOUNTABLE FOR YOUR MONEY
1 He also said to His disciples: “There was a certain rich man who had a steward, and an accusation was brought to him that this man was wasting his goods. 2 So he called him and said to him, ‘What is this I hear
about you?
Luke 16:1-3 (NKJV)
Give an account of your stewardship, for you can no longer be steward.’ 3 “Then the steward said within himself, ‘What shall I
do? For my master is taking the stewardship away from me. I cannot dig; I
am ashamed to beg.
Luke 16:1-3 (NKJV)
Every manager must understand that everything belongs to
the master
13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom
we must give account.
Hebrews 4:13
Money either cultivates or violates relational trust
Too many of us want Christianity without accountability
9 Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many
foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.
Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced
themselves with many griefs.
1 Timothy 6:9-10
2) GOD WANTS YOU TO VALUE PEOPLE MORE THAN MONEY
4 I have resolved what to do, that when I am put out of the stewardship, they may
receive me into their houses.’ 5 “So he called every one of his master’s debtors to him, and said to the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’ 6 And he said, ‘A
hundred measures of oil.’
Luke 16:4-9 (NKJV)
So he said to him, ‘Take your bill, and sit down quickly and write fifty.’ 7 Then he said to another, ‘And how much do you
owe?’ So he said, ‘A hundred measures of wheat.’ And he said to him, ‘Take your bill,
and write eighty.’
Luke 16:4-9 (NKJV)
8 So the master commended the unjust steward because he had dealt shrewdly.
For the sons of this world are more shrewd in their generation than the sons of light. 9 “And I say to you, make friends for yourselves by unrighteous mammon, that when you fail, they may receive you
into an everlasting home.
Luke 16:4-9 (NKJV)
Be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.
Matthew 10:16
The only thing that you and I can take to heaven with us are people
Invest your wealth into relationships that have eternal value
The currency of the kingdom of God are not in dollars, pounds,
euros or any other currencies; it is in people
3) GOD WOULD LIKE TO TRUST YOU WITH MORE
10 He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much; and he who is unjust
in what is least is unjust also in much. 11 Therefore if you have not been faithful
in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches?
Luke 16:10-15 (NKJV)
12 And if you have not been faithful in what is another man’s, who will give you what is
your own? 13 “No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one
and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other.
Luke 16:10-15 (NKJV)
You cannot serve God and mammon.” 14 Now the Pharisees, who were lovers of money, also heard all these things, and
they derided Him. 15 And He said to them,
Luke 16:10-15 (NKJV)
“You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts.
For what is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in the sight of God.
Luke 16:10-15 (NKJV)
Faithfulness is God’s litmus test that reveals whom you serve; a
question of fidelity
3 “You shall have no other gods before me.”
Exodus 20:3
Money mismanagement is a relational breach of trust and a
theological threat to monotheism
