Phil Gordon ridesthe fast train

“I have two goals. I want to win theBermuda Bowl and abracelet at the WorldSeries of Poker. It willhappen!” These arestrong words from PhilGordon, but thensuccess has come earlyand often to him.Gordon started collegeat age 15 and was a retired multi-millionaire at 26.

Gordon, who lives in Las Vegas, is playinghere at the NABC.

Playing games with his family was animportant part of his youth, and the competitionwas fierce. “I played cards all my early life. Mywhole family played. Whether it was cards,scrabble or Boggle, we played for blood,” he says.This was a good background for a bridge or pokerplayer.

Gordon learned bridge from his great-aunt,Lib Lucas. He attended college at Georgia Tech inAtlanta and began playing bridge “from my firstday there.” Eventually, he improved his game andgraduated to duplicate bridge. Players at the localclub encouraged him. “Patty Tucker played withme. Besides being a mentor, she was a friend,partner and teammate.”

Gordon says he ”became hooked on bridge,”and decided to quit college to go on thetournament trail. “My parents were not pleased, tosay the least” says Gordon. He played bridge for ayear and returned to school and graduated. Bytaking 23 credit hours each term, he finished therequirements he lacked in one year.

Gordon moved to California to work in theinformation technology industry. He co-founded ahigh-tech company called Netsys Technologies.Bridge was put on hold as he worked 80-hourweeks for four years. The company was sold toCisco Systems in 1997 —- he was 26 years oldand wealthy.

Gordon was at loose ends. He decided totravel. He bought a backpack and visited morethan 50 countries on five continents. When askedwhich country was his favorite, he says, “It’s hardto say because they all have their own appeal. Ifyou pinned me down, I would probably say Elvis is in the building! Elvis sang the national anthem at the opening ceremonies Friday. The

Their afternoon session was 66.48%, and theybacked it with a 66.16% score in the evening,earning them a carryover of 130.32, well ahead ofDutch players Onno Eskes and Simon De Wijs,who enter play today with a carryover of 78.17.Right behind them with 76.47 are Ralph Buchalterand Migry Zur Campanile.

The District 9 team captained by Mike Beckermounted an impressive rally to come from 44IMPs down with a set to play to defeat the District16 squad led by Bart Bramley 114-102 to make itto the final of the Grand National Teams,Championship Flight.

They will face the District 25 team captainedby Frank Merblum in today’s 64-board final.

NABC InsiderThe Las Vegas Hilton has really made an

effort to welcome the ACBL. They did banners,they printed special key cards and even made upsome special blackjack tables with the tournamentand ACBL logos and set them up just as youenter/leave the casino. The Insider has seennumerous bridge players at these tables. We hopeyou have been able to make the transition fromcounting high card points to counting to 21 andare enjoying a financial welcome to the hotel aswell.

Elvis was here again last night —- in fact, wespotted a second Elvis in the playing area about anhour before the evening session. We hope thedoughnut shop in Detroit (where we found Elvislast March) isn’t suffering irreparable financialharm.

There will be a special party tonight – see theinvitation elsewhere in this issue of the Bulletin –the Insider plans to be there to participate inwhatever surprises that company from Washingtonand the on-line guys from here in town have tooffer. ACBL bans electronicdevices in national events

The ACBL Board of Directors approved acomprehensive ban on electronic devices for allnational level events, but not to regional orIntermediate Newcomer contests:

Electronic devices, excluding health relatedequipment, capable of sending or receiving

communication, including but not limited to,headphones, earphones, cellular phones andminicomputers: (1) shall not be allowed in theplaying areas, adjacent hallways, restrooms oraccessible break areas; and (2) shall not be usedduring a session.

These restrictions shall apply to all pairs,team members, captains, coaches, recorders andkibitzers and shall apply throughout any actualplaying session or segment.

A violation of this policy shall result in adisciplinary penalty of one full board (or 12 IMPs

at that form of scoring) for the first offense. Asecond offense shall result in disqualification fromthe event for the pair/team.

Kibitzers violating this policy shall be removedfrom the playing area for the remainder of thesession.

The Summer North American BridgeChampionships in Las Vegas will be the firstNABC impacted by the new policy.

My husband, Gary, and I own the three mostuseless dogs in theworld. We have nochildren orgrandchildren, so wetreat the dogs prettymuch the way you doyour grandkids, minusthe college funds.

It really hurts me tosay this, but while mydog ChuChu may be the cutest dog alive, he isundoubtedly the dumbest. It took us almost twoyears to teach him to sit. In his third year, wemoved onto something big: “Stay!”

One day, ChuChu and I were making ourrounds of errands. He was flopped semi-conscious (a not-unusual state for him) in theback seat, and as I pulled up to the drycleaner, Irecognized this as what is called in Education, aTeachable Moment.

I parked the car, saying, “Stay!” Hecontinued to sprawl. “Stay!” as I opened thedoor. Amazingly, ChuChu remained flat. “Stay!”while I scrambled out of the car. Again, “Stay!”as I shut the door. Miraculously, he continued tolie motionlessly on the backseat. I gave onemore emphatic “Stay!” as I backed away. Iturned to enter the store, and ran right into aman.

He was standing there, shaking his head,looking at me and the car. “Lady,” headmonished. “Why don’t you just use theemergency brake, like everyone else?”

“Now,” you may be asking yourself as youwipe the tears of laughter from your eyes, “whatdoes this have to do with bridge?”

Everything. The man was confused becausehe couldn’t see the whole picture: There was a

dog lying in the backseat ofthe car. And what is biddingexcept an attempt to showyour partner the dog in thebackseat? Your hand!

Your job while biddingis to show your pard the dogin the backseat as clearly aspossible. You need to paint apicture that shows this dog... and no other.

As a teacher, I see myplayers struggling andmaking so many confusingbids.

One very common errorthat just drives me crazy (ashort journey) is using thesame bid to show hands thatare vastly different. Take alook at hand these twohands♠6 5 2 ♥Q J 8 5 ♦K 4 3♣9 4 2

Over pard’s takeoutdouble, less experiencedplayers will treat both ofthese hands the same. Theywill bid 1♥ over pard’s takeout double of anopener of a minor) with both these hands. Folks,you can’t bid the same with 6 high-card pointsthat you bid with 11 HCP. How will your poorpard ever see the dog in the backseat?

You must bid after a takeout double, evenwith zero points. That means you must showpartner clearly if you’ve got a very minimumhand, 0-8 HCP, by bidding as cheaply aspossible, or with a nicer hand, jumping a levelwith 9-11. How can partner plan and place the

contract?This seems to be a real stumbling block for

many emerging players. Maybe it will help topicture your hand as a dog: Do you have aChihuahua? A Rottweiler? A pit bull? Yourpartner will never know unless you show off thedog in the backseat.

A reception for Junior players was heldyesterday. Aileen Osofsky, chairperson of theACBL Goodwill Committee, introduced a groupof Juniors who are here from Belgium. She alsorecognized some of the people who wereresponsible for promoting Junior bridge.

Jay Baum, ACBL CEO, addressed the Juniorplayers and thanked them for coming. He alsotalked about spreading the game of bridge to otherJunior players.

Patty Tucker, organizer of the recent YouthNABC held in Atlanta, also spoke to the group.

“In Atlanta, 60% of the participants were ages10 to 14,” said Tucker. “Those of you here aremostly older than that, and I encourage you tomake those younger than you feel part of theJunior bridge community. Help them to share yourpassion for the great game of bridge.”

The reception was sponsored by the ACBL.

They were excited to learn that their story wasto be told in the Daily Bulletin, especiallyconsidering that on arrival, one of them – LoisMann of Smithtown – picked up a copy of theDaily Bulletin and said, “My dream is to be on thefront page.”

The rest of the Bridgettes are BeverlyLefkowitz, Babylon; Susan Dunnells, West Islip;Louisa DeLew, East Islip; Sandi Jones,Brightwater, and Joanne Chalifoux, Bay Shore.

They have been calling themselves theBridgettes for about six years, Lefkowitz said. Thegroup includes two others, but it’s a ratherexclusive club. Other players, Lefkowitz said,have been “knocking our doors down” to join.

Chalifoux had the solution for that: “Take anumber.”

The Bridgettes all play with each other, andthey love to get together and practice materialfrom bridge lessons, and they regularly study theBidding Toolkit from the ACBL Bridge Bulletin.

On one occasion, the group played bridge foreight hours straight “with only 10 minutes forlunch,” said Lefkowitz.

Australia and Ethiopia.”While living in California, Gordon began

playing poker — it was legal there but not inmany other places. After his world travels, he tookup the game again. He started at low stakes andmoved up as his game improved. He also dippedback into bridge. In 1999, he won the Red RibbonPairs at the NABC in Philadelphia.

At about the time poker exploded, Gordonbecame a top player. He won two World PokerTour titles. He was fourth in the Main Event at theWSOP in 2001. When asked if he was nervous, headmits, “Heck, yes.”

Gordon has written three poker books withmore than 500,000 copies in print. Phil Gordon’sLittle Green Book is probably the best known. Hehas hosted the television show “Celebrity PokerShowdown,” shown on the Bravo channel.

When he was winning his first WPTchampionship, he heard that his great-aunt Lib, theone who had taught him bridge, had died fromlung cancer. The loss saddened Gordon and wasthe impetus that caused him to found the “Put aBad Beat on Poker” initiative.

Tournament poker players who “cash” (finishhigh enough to place in the prize money) areasked to pledge 1% of their winnings to a non-profit foundation that Gordon set up —- theCancer Research and Prevention Foundation.More than $4 million has been raised.

As an example of its work, the foundationoffers mammograms, without charge, to women inunder-privileged neighborhoods. When asked to compare bridge against poker,Gordon says, “There is a large cross-over betweenthe two. Both reward aggressive play that istempered by patience. At bridge, the players whopreempt, or the Meckwells who bid game on 23points, put tremendous pressure on theiropponents. It’s the same at poker.” He believesthat you should take what the opponents give youand that “table feel” is extremely important forpoker and bridge alike.

Also, experience is important at each game.Both are what Gordon calls, “case-based games.”What this means, according to Gordon, is thatwhen you are faced with a decision, you cansearch your past for situations (or cases) thatyou’ve been exposed to that are similar —- withmore information to draw on, you are more likelyto make your best decision.

When you sit down to play a session of bridgeor poker, you will have hundreds of decisions tomake. Most of them can be solved by theapplication of rules that you’ve learned. You willencounter situations, however, that are not coveredby the rules. That’s when the recall of past similarcases (experiences) will allow you to choose thebest option.

World TransnationalMixed Teams

You can play in a world championship this fallwithout having to qualify in a team trials. Just signup for the World Transnational Mixed TeamsChampionship, part of the World Mind SportsGames in Beijing, China, starting Oct. 3.

The mixed teams likely will start Oct. 12. Theformat will depend on the number of entries butprobably will be Swiss teams qualifying to aknockout phase (round of 16 or eight) todetermine the gold, silver and bronze medalists.The bronze medal will be awarded to the losingsemifinalist placed higher in the Swiss rankings.

Teams must consist of two or three mixedpairs playing in partnership.

Teams can be made up of players fromdifferent countries, and there is no quotarestriction for this exciting and challengingchampionship.

Players must be members in good standing oftheir national bridge organization (ACBL, forexample) which must, in turn, be a paid-upmember of the World Bridge Federation.

Teams should contact their NBOs and requestnomination to play in the mixed teams.

NBOs may nominate as many teams as theywish.

Malcolm Harris played 6♥ on a top club lead.He ruffed high, crossed to a trump to ruff anotherheart high. He went back to a heart to ruff the lastclub. Harris cashed the ♠A and played to the ♦Kto play the hearts. In the two-card ending, Northhad the ♦3 and the ♠Q. Declarer had the ♦A Jand East was caught in a show-up squeeze. Thisline brings in the 13th trick when the ♦Q isdoubleton offside.

Glen Milgrim, on a club lead, ruffed, crossedto a heart to ruff a club, went back to a heart toruff a club and now played the ♦K, ♦A and adiamond ruff. Now he ran the trumps. In the three-card ending as the last trump was led, East had♠K 9 and ♦Q and declarer had ♠A 6 and the ♦J.Whatever East did, his goose was cooked.

This line succeeds when the defender has the♦Q and ♠K, but also when the ♦Q is in adoubleton or tripleton offside. Because the auctionhad told Glen the ♠K was on his right, it looks tobe the right play.

Knockout Teams and IMP Pairs

In a matchpoint event, we are always lookingfor that extra trick or playing in a risky major suitor notrump rather than a poor scoring, but safer,minor suit. Why? Because it pays off big time.

We may even risk our contract to make a playfor an overtrick. On defense we strive not to blowa trick rather than beat a contract.

When scoring is done by IMPs, however, thestrategies change drastically. Now just making orbeating a contract can give us a big score, butextra tricks are chump change. (Okay, I know wehave all won or lost a match by 1 IMP.) There areother considerations as well.1. Make or set the contract. Do not worry about

over (or under) tricks. If you are in the rightspot, it will usually work out in your favor.Trust your bidding system. Even at pairs, youwill be a winner if you are in the right suit atthe right level despite blowing an overtrickonce in a while.

2. Stretch to bid a game. If vulnerable, gameshould be bid even if it is as a low as a 40%chance. If not vulnerable, it should be a 50%prospect.

If you bid three vulnerable games that youropponents do not bid and you make only oneof them, you break even. If you are in anauction and the decision is now in your handswhether to bid game or not - if you have tothink about it, bid game.

3. Do not double their partial. You better havethem down two in your own hand before youchance a double of a bid below game. And"down two in your own hand" means youhave a fistful of trump tricks. Do not count onyour partner for many of these tricks. Do notdouble strictly on high-card points.

4. Do not go for numbers. Don't make somewild, preemptive bid just because you have sixor seven (or more) cards in one suit. It is notworth it.

Your competitive bidding should be moreconstructive at IMP scoring. Upgrade yourovercalls by at least a queen. This means thatif you would overcall with 8 points at pairs,

overcall with 10 or more at IMPs. For two-level or higher overcalls, you better have agood suit, especially when you're vulnerable.

5. Play your safest contract. If in the biddingyour find you have a better fit in a minor thana major, play in the minor, especially at apartial. You want to make whatever contractyou bid. Plus 110 is only a bit worse than plus140 and it may not even make any differencesometimes.

This also applies to game and slam bidding.If partner opens 1NT and you have a four-cardmajor with at least invitational values, bidStayman. Plus 620 and plus 630 are the sameat IMPs.

6. Do not stretch to bid slams. Bid only slamsthat are at least 75%.

7. Do not stretch to bid slams. Oh, is this arepeat? Well, good. The point needs extraemphasis.

8. You have partners at the other table. Don'tmake a risky bid or play because you thinkyou are down in a match.

Recently in a seven-board match, we bid aslam down two vulnerable for minus 200, bid3NT with a combined 21 high-card pointsafter a bidding misunderstanding - which mypartner played well for down one and minus100 - and doubled them in 4♥, making fivefor minus 990.

We thought we were slaughtered. Wrong. Wewon IMPs on all three boards and blitzed theother team.

9. Don't be a hero. Do not make a confusing bidthat (1) may be passed when it is forcing or(2) shows extra values that you don't have.Make the call that shows your strength.

10. Take out insurance. In every team game, therewill be a hand where both sides can makegame. Usually it is a wild hand with lots ofdistribution, doubles fits and long suits. It isusually right to bid one more --- unless youare sure they are going down and you cannotmake your bid.

11. Take a chance to beat a contract. You maytake a risk that he would never dream of atmatchpoints --- such as leading the king fromK-x, hoping to find your partner with the aceof that suit or the queen and a quick entry intrumps. Sometimes you give up an overtrick,so you lose 1 IMP. If your bold play sets acontract just one time in 10, you area ahead.

12. If it's hard for you, it's hard for them. Theplayer sitting in your seat at the other table isholding the same cards you are. This guidingprinciple will help you on several of the pointsalready listed.
