Philip Gulley

Philip Gulley is a Quaker pastor, writ-er and speaker from Danville, IN. An eclectic writer, Gulley has published 20 books, including the acclaimed Harmo-ny series chronicling life in the eccentric Quaker community of Harmony, IN and the best-selling Porch Talk series of in-spirational and humorous essays.

In his most recently published work of non-fiction, Living the Quaker Way: Timeless Wisdom For a Better Life To-day, Gulley offers the opportunity to participate in a world where the values of the Quaker way bring equity, peace,

healing, and hope. Living the Quaker Way invites readers to encounter the defining commitments of the Religious Society of Friends–simplic-ity, peace, integrity, community and equality, and shows how those ideals can be incorporated in personal and public life to bring renewal and eliminate the clutter that is keeping us from deeper spirituality.

Gulley was raised in Danville, Indiana where he lives today with his wife, Joan, and two dogs, Ruby and Jack. Many of his characters and recollections are taken from his boyhood in this small Midwestern town.

Gulley attended Marian University in Indianapolis where he studied theology and sociology. He received his Master of Divinity in 1992 from Christian Theological Seminary. While in seminary, he became the pastor of Irvington Friends Meeting in Indianapolis and began writing essays for the church’s newsletter. Those essays made their way into the hands of a publisher, who published Gulley’s essays. Gul-ley has been writing ever since.

Gulley is currently a co-pastor at Fairfield Friends Meeting near In-dianapolis. Additionally, he hosted the television program Porch Talk with Phil Gulley on the Indiana PBS affiliate WFYI and their flagship show Across Indiana, for which he received two Emmy® Awards. He also writes the popular monthly Home Again column for Indianapolis Monthly and is a regular contributor to The Saturday Evening Post.

Up and Down at Foundry Foundry's New Elevator

Comfort, access and safety are the distinguishing characteristics of Foundry’s new elevator.

Riders in Foundry’s current elevator have probably shivered in winter, and perspired in summer. To rem-edy this problem, Foundry’s new elevator has environmental condi-tioning that regulates the temper-ature appropriately in all seasons.

Two wheelchairs with providers can fit comfortably in the larger new elevator. More people at once will be able to travel to any of the three floors of the church.

The new elevator also provides much better access to multiple spaces. And, as Pastor Al Hammer points out, it is in prime real estate. Because a main objective of the renovation is to simplify paths between spaces at Foundry, people entering the church see the elevator immediately upon entering through the new main entrance in the bell tower.

The elevator will provide direct access up to the old fellowship space and classrooms and direct access down to the choir room with access to the lower level. The elevator will facilitate easier transport of items to storage because it opens near a new door into the basement cata-combs, Foundry’s storage area.

In addition, the new elevator increases safety. A telephone in the ele-vator car enables calls in case of emergency, and electromagnets allow doors to shut automatically to slow spread of smoke and fire.

A new lobby area around the old elevator brings it up to safety codes similar to the new elevator. The old elevator will assist with opera-tional service needs and provide extra capacity during peak usage.

Sunday Redesign

Seeking a deeper relationship with God, each other and the community around us, Foundry lay and ministry teams have been exploring how to offer more time to engage in the full church experience.

After four listening sessions on proposed changes to the times of Foundry’s two worship services, the Schedule Redesign Planning team met Sunday July 10 and discussed what they have heard from the congregation.

In addition to discussing an earlier start time for the current 9:30 AM worship service, there was considerable deliberation around changes to the current 11 AM worship time. Some team members were concerned about moving away from the “historic” 11 o’clock hour, however some adjustment to the late service start time is anticipated to ensure enough transition time be-tween services and the interim ministry hour. The redesign team is recom-mending a 9 a.m. start time for the earlier service and an 11:15 AM start time for the later service.

Above all, the team heard widespread acceptance for the proposed change and the opportunities it will present for all members to come together for Christian education, fellowship and other shared discipleship programs.

The Schedule Redesign Planning team heard concerns about the impact a time change might have on members, including parents and those traveling from outside the city, as well as visitors. They are keeping those issues at the forefront during their deliberations, asking the congregation also be mindful of the new experiences that these changes will make possible to further our growth as a body of Christ.

Other priorities under consideration:

-- Ensuring equal and sufficient time for both worship services.

-- Protecting time for open fellowship between services.

-- Incorporating the gifts and talents and presence of our youth gifts into our worship services.

-- Equipping staff to manage logistics and programming during the hour between services.

The ministry team and staff will now discuss recommendations. Staff are con-sidering Sunday school, small groups, programming, fellowship time, transi-tion time and more. The intention is for the schedule change to coincide with the unveiling of our newly renovated spaces in September. Another update is expected to come within the next two weeks.
