THE SOLEMNITY OF CHRIST THE KING

The Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe is the last Sunday of the

liturgical year, bringing us full circle toward Advent hope. Christ reigns, enthroned in

heaven, King of heaven and earth for all time. After listening to stories of his life and

ministry through Ordinary Time, our parting image is that of majesty. Like a great rose

window of a medieval cathedral, Christ the King reminds us that Jesus is the source and

center of our lives and his divine power extends over all of creation. The Church

professes that the One who was crucified and rose again is the Lord of the world and of

history. As Saint Paul tells us, “Christ is before all things, and in him all things hold

together. May the Holy Spirit help us today to open our hearts to Christ, and invite him

to reign there now and forever.”

The grace, peace and love of Our Risen Lord Jesus Christ be with all of you,

Father Doug Sister Kathleen Michele Bergeron

The Collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) provides funding for groups that make lasting change and uplift the poor in the United States. In the last five years, over 36% of CCHD’s grants have gone to improving education, supporting economic development, and improving housing in low-income neighborhoods. Help us continue to defend human dignity and take poverty off the map. Give generously to the CCHD Collection.

    Living the Gospel

Gratitude is the inward feeling of kindness received.

Thankfulness is the natural impulse to express that

feeling. Thanksgiving is the following of that impulse.

    TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Today’s solemnity, the final feast of the

Church year, is a youngster as feasts go. In 1925,

Pope Pius XI was distressed by global political

upheaval and the de-Christianizing of society. That

year was a “Holy Year,” keyed to the sixteen

hundredth anniversary of the Council of Nicaea,

when the words “and of his kingdom there will be

no end” were added to the Creed. The Pope

explained that although most feasts had developed

over many centuries, the Church sometimes

provided a new feast to address new needs. He

pointed to the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus,

showing Christ’s love and compassion in a time

when many people embraced a cold and gloomy

spirituality. Originally on the last Sunday of

October, in the late 1960s the solemnity of Christ

the King was moved to the last Sunday of the year.

Fresh from baptism’s waters, we are

anointed with chrism “as Christ was anointed priest,

prophet, and king.” This feast is a key to our

identity. On this feast, we recognize Christ as a king

who breaks the usual mold of kingship, and who

shapes his kingdom with our hands, our words, our

deeds of love and service. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

    VATICAN SURVEY—

Seeking Comments of the Laity on

Family Issues Our Holy Father Pope Francis has called for the 3rd

Extraordinary Synod of Bishops for October 2014.

The topic to be discussed is “The pastoral challenges

for the family in the context of evangelization.” The

synod will reflect upon the family as evangelizers

and the Church’s teaching on family. Toward the

end of the preparation document, for the synod,

there are several pages of questions. The Holy

Father is asking for the reflection of the people of

God regarding these issues. The survey questions

can be found in the Clarion Herald. Responses must

be received by December 1, 2013.

If you would like to participate, it would be most

helpful to receive your responses typewritten with

your response identifying the number and letter of

the questions to which you are responding. Please

    send your responses to:
