Psalm 32 1Happy are those whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.

2Happy are those to whom the LORD imputes no iniquity,

and in whose spirit there is no deceit.

3While I kept silence, my body wasted away

through my groaning all day long.

4For day and night your hand was heavy upon me;

my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer.

5Then I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not hide my iniquity;

I said, "I will confess my transgressions to the LORD,"

and you forgave the guilt of my sin.

6Therefore let all who are faithful offer prayer to you;

at a time of distress, the rush of mighty waters shall not reach them.

7You are a hiding place for me; you preserve me from trouble;

you surround me with glad cries of deliverance.

8I will instruct you and teach you the way you should go;

I will counsel you with my eye upon you.

9Do not be like a horse or a mule, without understanding,

whose temper must be curbed with bit and bridle, else it will not stay near you.

10Many are the torments of the wicked,

but steadfast love surrounds those who trust in the LORD.

11Be glad in the LORD and rejoice, O righteous,

and shout for joy, all you upright in heart.

First Sunday of Lent

Holy Communion

March 1, 2020 ● 9:30 A.M., 11:00 A.M. Services

WELCOME TO EMMANUEL LUTHERAN CHURCH INTRODUCTION Today's gospel tells of Jesus' temptation in the desert. His forty-day fast becomes the basis of our Lenten pilgrimage. In the early church Lent was a time of intense preparation for those to be baptized. This catechetical focus on the meaning of faith is at the heart of our Lenten journey to the baptismal waters of Easter. Hungry for God's mercy, we receive the bread of life to nourish us for the days ahead. PRELUDE Nimrod (from the ‘Enigma’ Variations) Elgar WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS TRINITARIAN CHIMES The assembly stands. CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins.

Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God,

who is present, who gives life, who calls into existence the things that do not exist. Amen. If you were to keep watch over sins, O Lord, who could stand? Yet with you is forgiveness, and so we confess. Silence is kept for reflection. The assembly may stand or kneel.

Gracious God, have mercy on us. We confess that we have turned away from you, knowingly and unknowingly. We have wandered from your resurrection life.

We have strayed from your love for all people. Turn us back to you, O God. Give us new hearts and right spirits, that we may find what is pleasing to you and dwell in your house forever. Amen. Receive good news: God turns to you in love. “I will put my spirit in you, and you shall live,” says our God.

All your sin is forgiven in the name of ☩ Jesus Christ,

who is the free and abounding gift of God’s grace for you. Amen. GATHERING SONG O Lord, Throughout These Forty Days ELW 319 GREETING The grace of Jesus Christ our Savior, the reconciling love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Let us pray. Lord God, our strength, the struggle between good and evil rages within and around us, and the devil and all the forces that defy you tempt us with empty promises. Keep us steadfast in your word, and when we fall, raise us again and restore us through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. The assembly is seated. FIRST READING: Genesis 2:15–17; 3:1–7 (Please turn to page 2 in the Old Testament of your pew Bible). Human beings were formed with great care, to be in relationship with the creator, creation, and one another. The serpent's promise to the first couple that their eyes would be opened led, ironically, to the discovery only that they were naked. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. SECOND READING: Romans 5: 12-19 (Please turn to page 162 in the New Testament of your pew Bible). Through Adam's disobedience, humanity came under bondage to sin and death, from which we cannot free ourselves. In Christ's obedient death, God graciously showers on us the free gift of liberation and life. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. The assembly stands to welcome the gospel.

LENTEN GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

One does not live by bread a- lone, but by every

word that comes from the mouth of God. (Matt. 4:4) (REPEAT LENTEN ACCLAMATION) GOSPEL: Matthew 4:1–11 (Please turn to page 3 in the New Testament of your pew Bible).

The holy gospel according to Matthew, the fourth chapter. Glory to you, O Lord.

Jesus experiences anew the temptations that Israel faced in the wilderness. As the Son of God, he endures the testing of the evil one.

The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. The assembly is seated. SERMON Pastor Steven Wigdahl The assembly stands. HYMN OF THE DAY: I Want Jesus to Walk with Me ELW 325 RECEPTION OF NEW MEMBERS APOSTLES’ CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.* On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. *Or, "he descended into hell," another translation of this text in widespread use.

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Turning our hearts to God who is gracious and merciful, we pray for the church, the world, and all who are in need. Hear us, O God, Your mercy is great.

Holy and generous host, you set a table where we feast as friends. Prepare us to witness to your goodness with every gift you have given us to share, that all people may know your peace through Jesus Christ, now and forever. Amen. THE GREAT THANKSGIVING DIALOGUE PREFACE It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ. You call your people to cleanse their hearts and prepare with joy for the paschal feast, that, renewed in the gift of baptism, we may come to the fullness of your grace. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

THANKSGIVING AT THE TABLE In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. LORD'S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. INVITATION TO COMMUNION God’s love is poured out in Christ for you. Open yourselves to receive it.

Jesus Christ is the host of this Holy Communion, in which we celebrate the Real Presence of our Lord. All are welcome! The Communion is

administered by “intinction,” that is, the bread is handed to the communicant and the communicant dips the bread into the wine. If you are not able to take the wine, simply take the bread. Children are invited to come forward for a blessing. If you desire Communion, but are not able to come forward, please let an usher know. We’ll bring it to you. If you do not wish to partake of the Sacrament, simply remain seated when your row is directed to come forward. Gluten-free wafers are available; simply ask the server.
