SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT
Preparing the way of the Lord… Each year, the second Sunday of Advent reminds us of the message of John
the Baptist—and the beautiful image of the comfort that God offers to an oppressed community in Jerusalem
from the prophet Isaiah. Frequently during the Lenten season, we take on acts of penance through fasting,
prayer and almsgiving—tangible acts that help us in our journeys of conversion. The Advent season also offers
us chances to develop our spiritual lives as we prepare our hearts to welcome the Christ child. Perhaps this
Advent will allow us to open our hearts through the virtues of charity and mercy. One of the most certain
ways in which we can prepare our hearts to receive God’s mercy is to offer mercy to someone else. It doesn’t
have to be anything monumental, but perhaps a prayer directed on behalf of someone who is suffering and
hurting. We might also make a concerted effort to let go of a past hurt—to remind ourselves that we no
longer have to be held captive by someone else’s fault; to remember that no one lives with a purely functional
family and one of the best ways that we can respect our fathers and mothers is to live our lives well—with
integrity; to consciously acknowledge that most of the people we meet are walking with wounds invisible to
the eye and in their pain lash out to maintain their distance from others getting too close. Mercy is a beautiful
but challenging attitude to attain, but well worth the effort. Reminding ourselves of one of our most treasured
prayers, that of St. Francis of Assisi, perhaps we could pray:
“Let me be an instrument of your mercy, O Lord…”
