Cape Blanco Looks Like a Million (cont. from p1) Cape Blanco, a two-time group winner during hisundefeated juvenile campaign, parlayed a win in lastyear=s G1 Irish Derby into a strong runner-up effort

behind Harbinger inthe G1 King GeorgeVI & QueenElizabeth S. beforestorming home by 5 1/2 lengths in theG1 Irish ChampionS. This term, thechestnut colt tookto the syntheticsfor a fourth-placeeffort in the

G1 Dubai World Cup in March andwas fourth again in the G1 PrixGanay at Longchamp in Apirl. Heset sail for America after a sixth-place effort in the June 14 G1Queen Anne S. and made a quickimpact on these shores, defeatingGio Ponti by 2 1/4 lengths in theJuly 9 G1 Man o=War S. at BelmontPark. AI=m very pleased just to beable to ride the horse,@ Spencercontinued. AThere are very fewhorses that have the will to win likehe has. The more you ask fromhim, the more you get from him. Hehad loads left in the end.@

Cape Blanco won the Irish Derby and Irish ChampionS. last term for owners Derrick Smith, Susan Magnierand Michael Tabor. Dubai socialite Fitri Hay joined theownership group in March when she purchased asignificant interest in the colt. Hay and her husbandown the UAE-based holding company JMH Group.

Second Again for Gio Ponti... Champion Gio Ponti (Tale of the Cat), who won the2009 GI Arlington Million, was bested in last year=srenewal by Debussy (Ire) (Diesis {GB}). His campaign sofar this term has been a case of close calls. He wasfifth, beaten just 1 3/4 lengths, in the G1 Dubai WorldCup and was third in the June 11 GI Manhattan H.before failing to catch Cape Blanco by 2 1/4 lengths inthe July 9 GI Man o=War last time out. AThe winner hadfirst run on us and you have to give him credit, wewere second best today,@ said jockey RamonDominguez. AIf you put him in striking range too soon,he is going to go too early and it takes him out of hisgame. He isn=t three any more, but he runs so goodevery time he=s out there. We are all so used to hisconsistency.@

Treasure Beach Battles to Secretariat Win Jockey Colm O=Donoghue was confident thatTreasure Beach (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) would be able tocatch pacesetting Ziyarid (Ire) (Desert Style {Ire}). AHe

wasn=t doing much,@O=Donoghue said. AHe wasfinding it quite easy in thehomestretch. He just keptplugging on for me. He=svery adaptable and can goon any ground.@Coolmore=s CharlieO=Connor added, AColmO=Donoghue gave him agreat ride. Colm and[trainer] Aidan [O=Brien]were pretty confidentcoming over, so when the

two of them are confident, you have to be pretty happy.@ Derrick Smith, Susan Magnier and Michael Tabor=sTreasure Beach ended his juvenile campaign with athird-place effort behind Frankel (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) inthe G2 Royal Lodge S. and began 2011 with a narrowvictory in the G3 Chester Vase S. in May. After justmissing by a head when second in the June 4 G1 Epsom Derby, the dark bay rebounded with a 3/4-length win in the G1 Irish Derby. He was making hisU.S. debut off a subpar fourth in the July 14 G1 GrandPrix de Paris. Treasure Beach was bred by Brian and JaneHammond=s East Devon-based Ashley House Stud.Ashley House purchased the colt=s dam, Honorine (Ire)(Mark of Esteem {Ire}), for 50,000gns as a 4-year-oldout of the 2004 Tattersalls December sale. TreasureBeach, her third foal, was purchased for 180,000gns atthat same sale as a weanling in 2008. Honorine has anunraced 2-year-old colt by Singspiel (Ire) and a yearlingby Cape Cross (Ire) who brought 120,000gns atTattersalls last December.

Happy with a Second... Trainer Alain de Royer Dupre was content withZiyarid=s runner-up effort. AHe had a perfect race,@ deRoyer-Dupre said of the Secretariat pacesetter, whowas coming off a win in the G3 Prix Daphnis. AHe wasbeaten by a true Group 1 horse. I=m delighted we came.I think the horse proved himself.@ Jockey ChristopheLemaire added, AHe was beaten by a Derby winner andthat=s not too bad, is it? He gave a great performance.@

Traffic for Banned... Glen Hill Farm=s Banned (Kitten=s Joy) was rankbehind the slow pace and was forced to wait forrunning room before checking in third. AI had a realgood trip going into the first turn, but the pace was justslow enough that he wasn=t liking it and felt pressurefrom the other horses,@ Garrett Gomez explained. AHegot rank with me and, turning for home, it cost him alittle bit. If he had settled in a little bit more, I think hemay have been able to outrun those horses. He washandling the course real well.@

The classy Winchester, who almost exactly threeyears ago took the GI Secretariat S. at Arlington Park, added a pair of Grade I events down at Belmont Parklast season, and with a bullish late run in this, added afourth top-level score to his resume. Third behind Frankel (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) when lastseen in the June 14 G1 St James=s Palace S. at RoyalAscot, Excelebration showed the benefit of hissubsequent vacation to annihilate a competitive line-uphere. Always close to the pace set by the stable=sCeremonial Jade (UAE) (Jade Robbery), the well-backedchalk took over passing the quarter pole and, despiteveering right under Adam Kirby, was extending hisadvantage over the chasing pack as he maintained hispowerful surge. Excelebration, who was also second toFrankel in the Apr. 16 G3 Greenham S. over this trackand trip before annexing the G2 Mehl Mulhens-RennenMay 22, is set for a rematch in the G1 Queen ElizabethII S. at Ascot Oct. 15. AI think there will beimprovement to come from him, and he will come onfrom it, so I was delighted with the way he won,@trainer Marco Botti said. AAdam said he got him relaxedbehind the pacemaker and, when he asked him, hequickened straightaway. For me, he is a stronger horsethan he was at Royal Ascot. There is a big gap betweennow and the QEII, so he might go to France for the[Sept. 11] G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp, but it alldepends how he comes out of this. Everybody dreamsabout giving Frankel a race, but he is not just a normalgood horse--he is a freak--so to think we can beat himis a bit unrealistic at this stage, but who knows. All Ican say is our horse is tough, and he was relaxedbeforehand and didn=t sweat today, so that=s a sign thathe is enjoying what he does. If he keeps on improving, maybe one day. Gitano Hernando (GB) (Hernando {Fr})gave us good days, but this horse=s turn of foot makeshim probably the best I=ve had.@

Census is a rare late-maturing type from the RichardHannon stable renowned for precocious runners, and hehas progressed markedly since winning an 11-furlonghandicap on his sophomore bow here May 13. Slowest to breakhere, he was soon rushed up to race close to the earlytempo and, after being asked to stride to the front withthree furlongs remaining, was always holding his arch-rival in the run to the line. AHe was well-beaten byBrown Panther before and he beat him well today, sohe=s obviously a horse massively on the upgrade, andhe=ll be our first runner in the St Leger,@ the trainer=sson and assistant Richard Hannon Jr. explained. AHe=s avery talented horse and is improving, which is the mainthing at this time of year--he was lightly raced last yearand has been relatively lightly raced this year, too, sohe=s probably the perfect horse to take into that race.He was a little bit inexperienced at Newmarket and wasgreen and ran around a bit, but today he had a rail andshowed he is mentally tough enough for the Leger.@Jockey Richard Hughes added, AHe was very goodthere and is a horse that could win a Leger now. He=s abig, raw horse who is only getting better and better, and they stopped in front of me, so I had to get rollingearly, and he doesn=t do a stroke in front.@

MORE GLORY FOR THE SOPHOMORES? With 3-year-olds holding sway over their elders so farin 2011, the G1 Deutsches Derby second and third Earlof Tinsdal and Saltas are strong contenders from theClassic generation in the G1 Rheinland-Pokal. ADIRONDACK MISS My Miss Aurelia kicked her career off on a high note, laying just off the pace before pouncing at the eighthpole for a one-length victory July 22, stopping the timerin a smart 1:03.59 for the 5 1/2 furlongs. Despiteattending a sharp pace on that occasion, she seemed tohave a few gears and seems capable of sitting off thespeed if need be. Funny Proposition should be in themix early on, having cut out fast fractions in landing herdebut over six furlongs of the Churchill main track onIndependence Day. She was getting a bit leg-weary inthe waning strides that afternoon, but should improvefor the effort. The fact that Anna Sophia is trained byBill Mott is no surprise; her pedigree--she is out of anAustralian-bred daughter of Dehere--suggests turf.Despite that fact, she overcame an awkward dispatchto break her maiden by three lengths at first asking atBelmont Park June 30 and gets tested for class here.

A MEANS TO AN END FOR HARMONIOUS Arguably the top California-based turf filly of hergeneration last season, Pam and Marty Wygod=sHarmonious looms the one to beat as she continues ona path connections hope will end in the GI Breeders=Cup Filly and Mare Turf in November. Only 10 in thatth

event last season, the homebred had no pace to run atand missed by a nose in the GII Robert J. Frankel S.Jan. 1 at Santa Anita. She took on fellow 4-year-oldfillies in the Feb. 13 GII La Canada S., but dirt was nother calling, and she finished a well-beaten third of four.Rested off that effort, she resurfaced in the GII RoyalHeroine Mile July 4 at Hollywood. The distance of thatrace was always going to be uncomfortably short, andthe dark bay was doing her best work late, finishingsecond. She gets an extra furlong to work with thisafternoon and should prove tough. Defending champWasted Tears is more distance-limited than Harmoniousand enters this off a fifth in the GIII Modesty H. atArlington July 9. Despite getting things her own wayup front, she could not see out the 9 1/2-furlong tripand retreated to finish fifth. This cutback to a mile andan eighth will be to her liking. ROSY OUTLOOK FOR NY RACING As wasobserved by a member of the audience, AEverybodygets along when there=s plenty of money to go around,@and so it was with the harmonious panel of fiveassembled for the New New York Forum: The Latest onBreeding and Racing in the New VLT Era, held Saturdaymorning at the Humphrey S. Finney Pavilion in SaratogaSprings. The quintet consisted of New YorkThoroughbred Breeders Inc. Executive Director JeffCannizzo, Fasig-Tipton Director of Marketing TerenceCollier, New York Racing Association CEO CharlieHayward, Genting New York President Michael Spellerand trainer Rick Violette Jr., president of the New YorkThoroughbred Horsemen=s Association. Reflecting themood of the majority of those at the well-attendedevent, Cannizzo said during his opening remarks, A[TheVLT era] is something we have all been waiting on for avery long time. I=m very excited about this, everyone atthis table is very excited about this and, I=m sure, everyone in the room is very excited about this. Thereis going to be significant change in the racing andbreeding industry in New York, and it very well couldaffect racing and breeding nationally.@ After a decade-long delay, the Resorts World Casino is set to open inOctober. AWe are going to get this done in record time,@Speller said. Genting, the largest gaming company inthe world with market capital of $45 billion and some58,000 employees world-wide, has made an $830-million investment in the Aqueduct facility--its firstforay into the American gaming industry. The two-million square foot casino is expected to produce morethan 3,000 jobs. The first of the 4,525 VLTs to beinstalled are scheduled to arrive Tuesday. According toSpeller, revenue from the VLTs is projected to produce$55 million a year for purses; $10 million annually forbreeders= awards; and more than $50 million each yearfor capital and operating expenses for NYRA. The stateis predicted to garner $550 million a year, including$350 million for education. AThere is $2-3 billion a year[in gaming revenue] that goes across state lines,@Speller said. AOur role is to keep that money in [NewYork].@ And, unlike racing jurisdictions with VLTs, suchas Indiana and Pennsylvania, who have seen their shareof the VLT revenue cut due to legislative changes thatgive the states a larger share, the situation for theindustry in New York appears more secure. AThe splitsto the racing industry are done by statute in otherstates, and anything done by statute today can beundone by statute tomorrow,@ Hayward said. ABut, inFebruary of 2008, when we were awarded our 25-yearfranchise, the franchise agreement contained the splitsto NYRA, to purses and to breeders. We also have asettlement agreement that stipulates these amounts, sowe have the statute, the franchise agreement and thesettlement agreement. It would be tough to change thesplits in New York, and I think we=d have a strong legalcase if the state tried to do so.@

There were concerns raised that, with the boost inpurses, the competition for stalls in the state wouldgrow as well, and local trainers might get shut out. Butthe concern did not fall on sympathetic ears. ATheracing is going to get tougher,@ Violette said. ABut if youare not in this business trying to achieve excellence, you are going to fail. New York is going to have thebest racing in the country, if not the world, and it is thejob of the racing secretary and NYRA to put the besthorses in the stalls here. It=s a real business, not acharity. If [NYRA Racing Secretary] P.J. Campo doesn=tdo that, if the quality of racing slips, it=s his butt on theline.@

GREEN DESERT PENSIONED Green Desert(Danzig--Foreign Courier, by Sir Ivor) has beenpensioned after failing to get any of his mares in foalthis season, the Racing Post reported yesterday. Havingstood at Shadwell since his retirement from racing 25years ago, first at Melton Paddocks and then, from1990, at Nunnery Stud, the 28-year-old Gainsborough-bred will spend his retirement at the Norfolkestablishment. One of the leading sires of the last threedecades, his legacy as a sire of sires was secured byhis highly influential sons Cape Cross (Ire), Oasis Dream(GB) and Invincible Spirit (Ire). Sam Bullard, director ofstallions at Darley, told the Post Friday, AHe has provento be an outstanding sire of sires, and we are fortunateenough to stand his very best son, Cape Cross, andleading freshman of 2008, Kheleyf.@ Trained by SirMichael Stoute for the late Maktoum bin Rashid AlMaktoum, the bay won five of his 14 starts, includingthe 1986 G1 July Cup and G1 Haydock Sprint Cup, andwas runner-up to Dancing Brave in that year=s G1 2000Guineas and G1 St James=s Palace S. As well as theaforementioned trio of heavyweights sired during hisspell at Sheikh Hamdan=s establishment, Green Desertwas also responsible for a host of top-class runners, including Oriental Express (Ire), Sheikh Albadou (GB),Shinko Forest (Ire), Desert Prince (Ire), Desert Style(Ire), White Heart (GB), Markab (GB), Desert Lord (GB),Owington (GB), Diamond Green (Fr), Tamarisk (Ire),Desert Sun (GB) and Byron (GB) and also the high-classdistaffers Heat Haze (GB), Maqaasid (GB), Rose Gypsy(GB) and Bint Allayl (GB). In total, he has sired 24Group 1/Grade I winners, four champion sprinters and40 group- and graded-stakes winners.

Therewas nothing in the race to take me any further, so I lethim stride on and he idled in front. He can definitelybuild on that.@ Trainer John Gosden added, AHe ran verywell in a decent maiden at Newmarket and, as he wasthe first of 13 runners on his side of the track, heeffectively won his race there. It was logical to bringhim here, as his sire made him eligible having won at amile and a quarter and he is the first foal of a goodmare who Mr. Strawbridge has always really liked. He=sgot all the faculties in the right place and William[Buick] felt he was green in front, but we=ll stay atseven furlongs for the time being and he will probablybe a mile-and-a-quarter horse next year. We=ll take it astep at a time, as we wouldn=t want to over-race himthis year. He=s a very exciting horse.@ Video, courtesyRacing UK.
