From My Heart to Yours
Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother
John and led them up a high mountain, by themselves. And he was
transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his
clothes became dazzling white. Suddenly there appeared to them
Moses and Elijah, talking with him. Then Peter said to Jesus,
“Lord, it is good for us to be here; if you wish, I will make three
dwellings here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud overshadowed
them, and from the cloud a voice said, “This is my Son, the
Beloved; with him I am well pleased; listen to him!”1
The Transfiguration must have been quite an event. However, it’s
not without precedent. A similar event took place in the Old Testament.
Moses had an encounter with God on a mountain as well. We’re told:
“…Moses went up on the mountain, and the cloud covered the mountain.
The glory of the LORD settled on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it
for six days; on the seventh day he called to Moses out of the cloud.”2
While we can readily see the more obvious similarities, I think
there’s one we often miss. Whether in the Old Testament or the New,
people seem to need to be reminded that God’s plan will come to fruition
regardless of any worldly opposition; God’s plan will unfold regardless of
how things “look” from a worldly perspective.
Jesus’ disciples couldn’t make sense of the things that were
happening. In Matthew’s gospel, just before the Transfiguration, Peter
argues with Jesus when he’s told about the things that will come to pass at
Jerusalem—the crucifixion. As they were coming down from the
mountain (and Jesus tells them he will rise from the dead) it’s a sure bet
they still didn’t understand. Dying on a cross certainly didn’t sound like a
victorious end to their mission with Jesus!
Likewise, the Israelites weren’t impressive from a worldly
perspective. It was quite the opposite; they were numerically very small
compared to other Near Eastern nations.3 That’s probably why Moses had
to remind them that things aren’t always as they appear…at least not from
the world’s perspective: “It was not because you were more numerous
than any other people that the LORD set his heart on you and chose you—

for you were the fewest of all peoples. It was because the LORD loved
you…”4
I think that’s something we need to keep in mind as we ready
ourselves for the season of Lent. Things are not always as we’d like them
to be. Then again, they’re not always as they appear either. Because of
Jesus, the victory is already won, and our future is assured.
Know that you are loved and prayed for.

CHURCH PARTNERS AND COMMUNITY
GROUPS
Just a little bit more on the outcome of this past
year’s Christmas in Grundy County. 118
families were served, 349 kids were shopped for, 150 volunteers helped
and 49 families used the kids zone with 100 kids participating. Money
that was donated was spread among the area schools with GR getting $500
for their nurse’s fund or at-risk kids.
Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon in
all his glory was not clothed like one of these. Luke 12:27
We are providing Easter lilies for purchase again this year. The cost is
$7.00. A clip-board for sign-up is located at the back of the church with
an envelope for your payment or you can drop it off in the office. You
may purchase one to honor or remember a loved one and we will print the
list in the Easter bulletin. Please remember to take them home after
Easter.

Maundy Thursday
7 pm April 9 Maundy Thursday, also referred to as Holy
Thursday is observed during Holy Week on the
Thursday before Easter. Maundy Thursday
commemorates the Last Supper when Jesus shared the Passover meal with
His disciples on the night before He was crucified. The word “Maundy” is
derived from the Latin word mandatum, or “mandate.” The “Maundy” in
“Maundy Thursday” refers to the command Jesus gave to the disciples at
the Last Supper, that they should love and serve one another.
