NSSR 2012 SEASON WRAP-UP NEWS March 01, 2012
The National Straightline Snowmobile Racing (NSSR) held its Third race of the NSSR 2012 Super Series on Lake Chetek for the “Fastest Show on Ice” as part of the Chetek Chamber of Commerce Winterfest Event! Temperatures ranged from 8 to 26 degrees F with a light breeze from the Northwest at less than 10 mph. The tracks were aimed easterly from the Downtown Area. The stage was set for a great day of racing action. It was a beautiful sunny day with some light snow in the AM just before the racing action started. Now, let’s rewind to race one. The “Winter that Wasn’t” was a challenge for all race circuits in the Winter of 2012. NSSR’s race schedule went out the window with thin ice and above normal temps. All I know is that a lot of peo-ple loved the nice weather. Personally, it wasn’t our cup of tea! Despite attempts to maintain a schedule in January, it ended with all races being cancelled. Races were rescheduled in Minnesota for February and even that did not work! Race number one finally! Thanks to some great cooperation by racers and supporters, we were able to hold out first event at the Lakewoods Resort in Cable, Wisconsin of Lake Namakagon on February11th. All we have to say is a big “Thank You!” to PC and Phil Rasmussen for the Lakewoods for their support and last minute accommoda-tions for this event. Many know of this location for the famous “Longest Wienie Roast” Event held every March. Weather was chilly with the morning at -8 F in the morning and staying at 16 F above for a high with a head wind of 20 mph or so. Needless to say it was chilly and not a record breaking day for speeds. Jack Henricks took top speed on his Yamaha at 165.517 mph followed closely by Marc Fricke of Illinois on his Turbo Charged Artic Cat at 161.797 mph. This was a good event with over 90 Pro Racers in attendance and also a good number of sleds in competition on the Fun Run track. It was fabulous! Got Ice? All right then, the warm weather continued in Minnesota and folks were falling through the ice all over the place. Now what? Well, Chetek, Wisconsin came through so that we could move our race number two to Lake Chetek on February 18th. Believe it or not, these guys had 20 inches of ice and the race was on! Friday, February 17th was set up for some test passes from Noon to 4PM. Frozen Assets was in attendance with some high hopes of going to the 200 MPH mark this season. They had just set a pass of 170 mph a couple of weeks earlier in St. Ger-main, Wisconsin and thought they had it figured out. Shortly after Noon the first pass was made at 169 mph and right after the speed traps it went out of control! Frozen Assets was totaled rolling over several times! Fortunately, the Chetek Fire Department was on the scene with their EMT’s and the driver JC out of Illinois in the Warning Family Dragster was out of the vehicle and standing almost immediately. We just thank the powers above for keeping JC safe in this crash! Continued next page———>

Saturday, February 18th started out in the single digits and rose to a high of 33 F during the afternoon for a beauti-ful day of racing. Thirteen records were set at this track and there was a slight tail wind to assist. Seth Thorson of the Factory Yamaha Racing came out with his 2012 Nytro to set a new record in the Trail Stock Four Stroke Class at 94.736 mph – talk about moving with a full suspension machine! Tia Vanguilder came out swinging with the Stahl Racing Ski Doo’s in the Improved Stock 800 and 1000 classes setting new records at 128.955 mph and 138.019 mph. Al Doberstein and Mike Martin set new records on their four stroke Artic Cats in the Four Stroke Stock Turbo at 112.207 mph and the Improved Stock Four Stroke at 147.440 mph. Tyler Kulus bumped up his Pro Stock 700 record again to an amazing 134.789 mph on his XCR Polaris. Steve Spire brought out his Nitrous boosted F7 big bore to raise that Super Twin Lake Racer record to 134.370 mph. Jack Henricks again ran superior on his Henricks Powersports/OSP Yamaha taking Top Speed of the day at 173.493 mph and setting a new Pro Max record! This race became quickly referred to as Chetek 1 as we were to return on February 25th to race at the Win-terfest Event and this became known as Chetek 2! Chetek 2 is on and so is the Chetek Winterfest! The Chetek Chamber and Organizer Rob Licht do a great job at this event! February 25th was another beautiful day of racing with numerous activities for the adult and kid throughout the day. There was over 130 machines making over 400 passes on the Fun Run for some great competi-tion and nearly 90 Pro Machines racing to set Ten New World Records! The 600 Stock Class sleds set a new re-cord of 109.367mph by Dan Graunke on the Ski Doo RS and by Patty Olson on the F6 Artic Cat at 110.627mph. Kris Doberstein came out swinging on her Artic Cat F6 to set a new record of 117.391mph in the Improved Stock 600 Class. Dennis Chmiel of Illinois rocked out a new record on his Turbo Powered RX-1 in the Improved Four Stroke class at a rockin 156.238 mph! Meanwhile, long time racer Rick Schellbach bumped up his Open Mod 1100 record to 157.377 mph. The Racing action heated up and was fast and furious throughout the day. We witnessed the crash of Todd Lewis of Lewis Racing on his Pro Stock 1000 Ski Doo when a rear suspension wheel gave out at the 800 foot mark and took him hard to the bank at 138mph. Thanks to the great response of the Chetek Fire De-partment and the Ambulance Service, Todd Lewis is recovering well at home with a couple of broken bones in his arm above the wrist. He is thankful for the good response and the enforcement of safety equipment for the rider and sled. We at NSSR are also glad to hear that Todd is doing well and on full recovery. Well, can you say Yamaha Turbo with One Stop Performance (OSP) Tuning, Henricks Racing/Powersports, and break neck speed all in the same sentence. Jack Henricks sat up and rode his blue beauty to a Top Speed of 181.849mph to join Eddie Ensor in the 180mph club for 1000 feet at NSSR! He also set a new record in the Pro Max class at 177.412 mph! This team has been making big wins and breaking records all over the United States and we are glad to have them displaying their fine Yamaha’s at NSSR. Notably, Marc Fricke on his Tubo twin Artic Cat also posted an amazing speed of 166.473 mph at this event! Interesting to note about this is that the record set by Fast Eddie Ensor in 2010 at Chetek is getting close to being met, or beat! Will this bring Fast Eddie back out to defend his title of the World’s Fastest Machine in 1000 feet at 183.439mph? You will have to stay tuned for the 2013 season to see.
Fans were also able to see the fast Mini Mod Pro machine of “Flyin Ryan” Ensor make a record setting pass of 109.783 mph on his 250cc naturally aspirated mini machine. Fast Eddie Ensor was tuning for the 110 mph mark. Remember, this has to be the fastest Mini in the US and Canada! All we can say is that the rules committee will have to take a look at this accomplishment that was never expected. This NSSR Super Series event in Chetek was hosted by the Chetek Chamber of Commerce and it’s area busi-nesses, along the City of Chetek and it’s Staff. A special thanks to the Chetek Fire and Rescue for providing Safety and EMT services for this event, along with the cooperation of the City of Chetek and the Wisconsin DNR. Also, a round of applause for the efforts of the City of Forest Lake, the Wright and Washington County’s Sheriff Departments, along with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources in working with NSSR to help make the races happen, despite the weather. We are hoping to have these races again in Minnesota with good winter weather in 2013.
