AGA KHAN FAMILIES STARAT GOFFS MARE SALE

By Emma Berry and Daithi Harvey

The headline session of the two-day Goffs November Breeding

Stock Sale was once again a showcase for the Aga Khan

bloodlines, with an in-foal mare and a filly in training filling

Saturday’s top two slots.

Ebeyina (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}) (lot 1368), a winner last year

on debut at three for Dermot Weld, hails from the

black-type-laden family that has produced the Queen’s G1 Ascot

Gold Cup winner Estimate (Ire) (Monsun {Ger}) and her

half-sister, the Irish champion 3-year-old Ebadiyla (Ire) (Sadler’s

Wells), who features as the grandam of the sale-topper.

Sold for €460,000 with her first covering to hot property Kodiac

(GB), she will reside forthwith in the Kilkenny paddocks of

Ballylinch Stud. Ballylinch Manager John O’Connor commented,

“Obviously she’s a very nice mare; the fact that she is a

black-type mare is particularly appealing. She comes from a true

Classic family and I've been lucky buying from Gilltown before.”

Ballylinch Stud later went to €260,000 to secure another mare

in foal to Kodiac, lot 1402, the G3 Firth of Clyde S. winner

Majestic Dubawi (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) from the Darley draft,

which ended the day as leading vendor with 38 fillies and mares

sold for €2,028,500.

A trip farther afield beckons eventually for the 4-year-old

Peintre Celebre stayer Silwana (Ire) (lot 1362), whose four wins

include the Listed Loughbrown S. at The Curragh. Cont. p2.

MILITARY ATTACK SWOOPS IN CUP PREP Along with Designs on Rome (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}),

Military Attack (Ire) (Oratorio {Ire}) and Blazing Speed (GB)

(Dylan Thomas {Ire}) represent the three most dominating local

figures over the 2000-meter distance, and that pair kept true to

form when finishing one-two, respectively, in Saturday’s G2

Longines Jockey Club Cup, the local prep for the G1 Hong Kong

Cup Dec. 13. Blazing Speed proved narrowly best over Military

Attack in the 2014 running of the Longines Jockey Club Cup, but

the 7-year-old, who has had his fair share of age-related

problems, turned back the time at least one more time and

turned the tables in Saturday’s renewal.

The 2012/2013 Horse of the Year off wins in the G1 Queen

Elizabeth II Cup and G1 SAI Cup in Singapore, Military Attack

won the 1600-meter Sha Tin Trophy H. first-up for five months

last year. Cont. p4

EXAGGERATOR HITS DELTA JACKPOT Exaggerator (Curlin), a close-up fourth in the GI Breeders’

Cup Juvenile, held on to score a narrow victory in Saturday’s

Irish-based Japanese trainer Takashi Kodama signed the ticket

at €320,000 and outlined plans for Silwana, saying, “I've bought

her on behalf of Mr Koji Kamiyama of Kawakami Racing. She will

stay in training with me next year but will ultimately go to Japan

as a broodmare.”

Pat Downes, who manages the Aga Khan Studs’ operation at

Gilltown Stud, commented, “I'm delighted with the prices for

the two top fillies. I believe Silwana stays in training in Ireland

before being covered

and continuing her

breeding career in

Japan. Ebeyina is a

beautiful mare;

everyone who came to

see her agreed and she

had a very attractive

cover with Kodiac,

whose foals have been

so popular all week. Overall we're very happy with how they

sold. There's a great buzz in the ring, year after year we come to

Goffs and we seem to always sell well.”

The trade was certainly healthy. The 198 fillies and mares to

have found new homes represented a clearance rate of 81% and

turnover for the day improved by 29% to €8,640,500, albeit for

20 more horses sold than in 2014. The average was also up by

16% at €43,639 and the median improved fractionally to €25,000.

David Nagle stepped in at €270,000 for the unnamed and

unraced 2-year-old Galileo (Ire) half-sister to stakes winners

Yellow Rosebud (Ire) (Jeremy) and Seeharn (Ire) (Pivotal {GB})

who was offered by the Irish National Stud as lot 1333. He said,

“She's a beautiful looker and you could say she is a long-term

project. Her credentials were quite obvious being by Galileo. She

will come back to Barronstown Stud and we will take a bit of

time in deciding what stallion to cover her with.”

The Irish National Stud’s John Osborne added, “Obviously it's a

bit unusual in that she is a 2-year-old; she missed her engagement at

the sales as a yearling after a sequence of minor setbacks, but

eventually we got her here. We are delighted with the price; she

is a beautiful filly and was very well received on the sales

grounds. We still have the mare, who is middle-aged, and we

also have her half-sister Aimhirgin Lass (Ire) in training for the

President, Michael D. Higgins. She stays in training next season

with the hope of adding some further black print to the family.”

Osborne continued, “The mare is in foal to Mastercraftsman

(Ire) and I believe her Dragon Pulse (Ire) yearling half-sister is

with Richard Fahey, so there is lots going on in the family.”

Two more mares also brought €270,000, the first being lot

1324, the four-time-winning sprinter Badr Al Badoor (Ire)

(Acclamation {GB}), who was offered by Darley in foal to Dream

Ahead. The 5-year-old is a half-sister to four black-type

performers, including listed winner Profitable (Ire) (Invincible

Spirit {Ire}).

Purchaser Eamonn Reilly of BBA Ireland was unable to name

his client but offered, “When the catalogue came out online he

picked her out on pedigree and when I went to see her she had

the looks to match her page. She is a lovely individual from an

active family and she is a young mare so should have a great

future.”

Late in the session, Galileo’s 3-year-old daughter Mohini (Ire)

out of the G1 Prix Marcel Boussac winner Denebola (Storm Cat)

reached the same price when sold from Lord and Lady

Lloyd-Webber’s Kiltinan Castle Stud to Hubie de Burgh.

Gatewood Bell swung into action to buy the Ridge Manor Stud

mare Bridal Dance (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) (lot 1390). With

an enticing covering to Dark Angel, the dam of this year’s G3

Prestige S. winner Hawksmoor (Ire) (Azamour {Ire}) fetched a

winning bid of €260,000 and she too will be heading to

Barrownstown Stud.

"I've bought her for David and Diane Nagle. Obviously Dark

Angel needs no introduction and she has already proved she can

breed a top-class horse so I think she should make a fine

addition to the Nagles’ broodmare band,” Bell commented.

Wildcard entry Quake (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) (lot 1344A) may be

an unraced 3-year-old but she is also a half-sister to Group

1-winning sprinter King’s Apostle (GB) by one of the world’s best

stallions, and thus attracted a bid of €200,000 from Peter and

Ross Doyle on behalf of an unnamed client.

The sale day ended with the auction of nine stallion

nominations on behalf of the Ann Hanley Research Fund for

Parkinson’s Disease, including the last one available to Haras de

Bonneval’s popular young sire Siyouni (Fr) (Pivotal {GB}), which

was sold for €58,000. His advertised fee for 2016 is €30,000.

GOFFS NOVEMBER SALE -- SATURDAY1295, Ascending Angel (Ire), f, 4, Sea The Stars (Ire)--

Maskaya (Ire), by Machiavellian

Consigned by Wardstown Stud

Wardstown Stud had to shell out just 18,000gns for Ascending

Angel as a filly out of training at last year’s Tattersalls December

breeding stock sale. Fast forward a year and, put in foal to

Casamento (Ire) at a €5,000 stud fee, Wardstown enjoyed a

considerable return yesterday when Ascending Angel was

hammered down to MAB Agency for €120,000. Ascending

Angel’s 3-year-old half-sister California (Ire) (Azamour {Ire}),

who was unraced at the time of her sale last year, has now won

twice and was second in the Listed River Eden S. for trainer John

Gosden Oct. 29. Last year’s 2-year-old champion Belardo (Ire)

(Lope De Vega {Ire}) appears under the second dam.

Military attack then missed by a head in this and by a flared

nostril behind Designs On Rome in last year’s G1 Longines Hong

Kong Cup. Off the board in his next couple, he was runner-up to

fellow Hong Konger Dan Excel (Ire) (Shamardal) in Singapore

May 17 and was exiting a useful third to up-and-coming miler

Contentment (Aus) (Hussonet) in this year’s Sha Tin Trophy Oct.

25. Sent off the second choice in the wagering behind the

somewhat surprising favorite Helene Happy Star (Ire)

(Zamindar), Military Attack was actually first under the line with

a circuit to travel, but Zac Purton was happy to take back from

the low draw and allowed Top Act (NZ) (O’Reilly {NZ}) to take

them into the turn.

Helene Super Star (War

Front) was close, but

Khaya (NZ) (Librettist),

who made the running

in last year’s G1

Longines Hong Kong

Vase, burned around

them and was in front

heading down the back.

Purton had Military

Attack in a share of fifth,

with Blazing Speed, who eased out to a generous 9-2, to his

outside. Khaya led rounding the circle, but the big guns were

ready to pounce, and Blazing Speed took the first crack at them

about four away from the fence with 300 meters to travel. That

left Purton and Military Attack to follow that move through, but

a gap came to the inside entering the final furlong, and while

Blazing Speed–spotting his rival five pounds under the

conditions of the race–punched on gamely, Military Attack got

the upper hand late and found the line first. Beauty Only,

stretching out off a runner-up effort in the Sha Tin Trophy,

flashed home from near the tail to be third over a somewhat

unlucky Helene Happy Star. Dominant, winner of the 2013 Vase

and prepping for that race, finished well for fifth.

“He’s had a lot of problems,” said winning trainer Caspar

Fownes. “Last season it was his feet and this time it’s his joints

and a suspensory. It’s been a battle, day in and day out. The vets

have done a great job, and my team as well, they’ve worked

really hard. Everyone has put in the hours to just get that result

for the owners and for the fans in Hong Kong. He’s getting on in

age but I’m sure he’ll still be a force on the big day. I’d say he’ll

strip a little bit fitter from this run, as I’m sure the second horse

will--that was a big run from him, too. I’ll try to have him the

best I can on the day.”

Clickfor the Equineline.com catalogue-style pedigree. Able Friend came into Saturday’s G2 Jockey Club Mile as a nearcertainty, and why not? After all, he had made nine starts overthe course and distance for eight wins, including this event lastterm followed by an impossibly easy victory in the G1 Longines

Hong Kong Mile. Hislone defeat came overunsuitably soft ground inthe 2014 G1 ChampionsMile, a race he won withridiculous ease 12months later, and afterovercoming top weightand a trip well short ofhis best in the PremierBowl H. Oct. 25, surelythere was little standingin his way of a successful

defense of his title here. Think again. Beauty Flame, who saw his fair share of Able Friend’sconsiderable hind quarters last season, parlayed a soft trip into aboilover bigger than his off odds of 36-1 might suggest. Having last visited the winner’s enclosure following a Class 1success 371 days prior, Beauty Flame never could solve AbleFriend thereafter, filling second spot in the G1 Stewards’ Cup(1600m), the G1 Queen’s Silver Jubilee Cup (1400m) and theChairman’s Trophy (1600m) in April. Well down the field in hisfirst two runs this preparation, the former Roca Tumu mostrecently set the pace in the Sha Tin Trophy H. Oct. 25, butweakened late to finish fourth behind Contentment.

Though the 5-year-old typically does his thing from the front,

he was content to lay second when Able Friend’s stablemate

Secret Sham (Aus) (Shamardal) showed the most initiative, and

that ultimately proved a winning strategy. Contentment raced in

a handy third, while Able Friend, away a half-step slowly, was

buried down inside with no way out nearer the back of the pack.

There was little change in the plot through the middle stages,

although given the body language of most of the gallopers, the

pace backed down noticeably on the turn. Secret Sham held the

call at the head of the lane, but Beauty Flame was pulled out by

Gerald Mosse and took command with a furlong and a half to

race. Contentment had a clear shot and Able Friend tried to

make ground up the inside, but he was left with simply too

much to do off the race shape, and Beauty Flame proved not for

catching. Contentment boxed back to claim second, while

Designs On Rome (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}), making his

first start since fetlock surgery, closed his final quarter-mile in a

race-fastest :21.80 for sixth. He’ll attempt to defend in the Hong

Kong Cup over the 2000 meters Dec. 13.

“I was expecting that, if I was not going to make the running,

the John Moore horse [Secret Sham] would, so I didn’t rush my

horse and I got a perfect race,” said Mosse. “I just sat behind

him and waited for the straight, like [trainer] Tony [Cruz] told

me to do, and when I pressed the button he answered

perfectly.”

John Moore was chalking up Able Friend’s defeat to racing

luck--or better put, lack thereof.

“People might put it down to a flat run but I’d put it down to

circumstances--the pattern of the race and so forth. He’ll be

absolutely right for the Mile in December,” said the conditioner.

The one-time champion miler in this part of the world, Gold-

Fun is another of the jurisdiction’s top-shelf runners who has

seen his career path altered by the presence of Able Friend.

Though he has always run with credit over further, Gold-Fun

was equally proficient at

shorter trips, or at least

that’s what trainer

Richard Gibson would

have you believe. The

flashy chestnut,

partnered Saturday by

flamboyant Belgian

Christophe Soumillon,

continued to make

Gibson look good with a something-left-in-the-tank victory in

the Jockey Club Sprint.

Runner-up to the reigning Horse of the Year in last year’s Hong

Kong Mile and sixth in the Stewards’ Cup, Gold-Fun cut back to

six panels and, with Soumillon in for the ride, charged past last

year’s Hong Kong Sprint hero Aerovelocity (NZ) (Pins {Aus}) in

the Chairman’s Sprint Prize in February. Third to Able Friend in

the G1 Queen’s Silver Jubilee Cup over 1400 meters in March,

he completed a Gibson 1-2 behind Dundonnell (First Defence) in

the Sprint Cup in April, and but for a freakish performance from

Able Friend in the Premier Bowl, would have gotten the season

off on a winning note Oct. 25.

Peniaphobia, this race’s defending champ and second in the

big race, was sent from his widest draw to make the front by

Joao Moreira, but they had to work hard to do it, with the likes

of Super Jockey (NZ) (Sandtrap), Not Listenin’tome and

Dundonnell also showing keen early interest. Those events left

Soumillon and Gold-Fun with some open space from sixth

position, and the duo were happy to allow what appeared to be

a cracking pace take its toll on those that chose to race

prominently. Despite the taxing splits, Peniaphobia wasn’t

backing down and looked a winning chance at the quarter pole,

but Not Listenin’tome was looming to his outside, while Gold-

Fun was tracking that one into the final stages, looking loaded

for bear.

The pacesetter was holding on grimly, but Gold-Fun came with

his relentless rally and proved too good in the finish, as

Peniaphobia, Not Listenin’tome and senior citizen Lucky Nine

(Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) picked up the minor shares.

“He won by a good margin and Richard said he was unfit

today, so I reckon he will be better next time,” said Soumillon.

“You can see he was stooping a bit, looking around and hanging

right, so I had to try to get him to concentrate at the end. I did

not want to let them run away so I had to come out and he gave

me a very good turn-of-foot. I hit the front too early.”

A first-crop Frankel (GB) half-sister to Gold-Fun sold for ¥96

million as a foal at the 2014 JRHA Select Sale in Japan.

Buffering reached another milestone in his career Saturday

when collecting his sixth Group 1 win in Ascot’s G1

Winterbottom S., in which he was victorious two years ago, and

the 8-year-old gelding could yet get a chance to prove himself

on the world stage after receiving an invite to Dubai for next

March.

Rested most of this year

after a trip to Hong Kong

last December--when he

finished sixth, beaten less

than four lengths--in the

G1 Hong Kong Sprint,

Buffering showed no ill

effects of old age when

winning the G1 Moir S. for

the second year running first-up at Moonee Valley Oct. 2. He

had to settle for fifth behind Chautauqua (Aus) (Encosta de Lago

{Aus}) in the G1 Manikato S. over that strip three weeks later,

and was beaten a half-length when fourth in the G1 Darley

Classic. Nov. 7. Trainer Robert Heathcote said after Saturday’s

score--which established a new race record time--that Buffering

would aim for the A$10 million card for Magic Millions

graduates on the Gold Coast Jan. 9 before a possible trip to

Dubai.

"It is something I hadn't even told some of the owners,"

Heathcote said of Buffering’s Dubai invite. "The world is Buff's

oyster. He's eight years old--he's won two Group 1s this prep. If

he comes through that [the Gold Coast] in good order I'd love to

go over and shake hands with the Sheikh."

Good Project handed trainer Chris Waller a 10th Group 1 of

the spring season and owner C C Lai a second this month--after

Delectation (Aus) (Shamardal)’s score in the G1 Darley Classic at

the Melbourne Cup Carnival--when taking out Ascot’s G1

Railway S. Saturday. The

winner of a 1200 meter

benchmark 85 race at

Rosehill to kick off his

spring campaign Sept. 12,

Good Project was placed

twice at that level in

Sydney before winning

over this trip in a

benchmark 92 race at

Randwick Oct. 17. He was

second when dropping back 200 meters at Flemington Nov. 3,

and was making his Group 1 debut here. Jumping strongly and

heading straight to the lead, Good Project managed to make all

to post a clear-cut win.

“He is a lovely colt and he is a lovely horse to deal with,” said

Justine Hales, foreperson to Waller. “Everything he does he just

takes in his stride and that is what has helped him.”

“He is now a Group 1 winner and it gives me a great thrill to

come over to Perth and win one of their biggest races,” said

jockey Craig Williams.

novice heat going one mile here last week and broke best to

seize immediate control in this one. Increasing his advantage

rounding the home turn, the 5-1 chance kept on gamely under a

drive in the short straight to hold the late flourish of Special

Season (GB) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) by a half length. “He’s a bit of a

cheeky playboy, but has really knuckled down for his last three

races and is learning his trade nicely,” commented rider James

Doyle. Cont. p8

“He was all over the place on his first three runs, but has kept

on improving since his first win here [Ocr. 29],” Doyle continued.

“We went a hell of a pace all of the way and wanted to draw the

sting out of the rest of the field because he won over a mile last

time and all he does is gallop. He seems to be much more

straightforward in front, doing his own his own thing, and he

doesn’t over-race. He was in front with his ears pricked and

wasn’t losing any energy.” Race Day’s dam, Nadia, won the G1

NATIVE SONS HIT THE JACKPOT

Exaggerator (Curlin), ridden and trained respectively by

Louisiana-born brothers Kent and Keith Desormeaux, gave the

pair quite the welcome home present Saturday as he came

through at 4-5 odds in the $1-million GIII Delta Downs Jackpot.

GI Champagne S. runner-up Sunny Ridge (Holy Bull) was a game

second, beaten just a neck, while longshot Harlan Punch

(Harlan’s Holiday) made a menacing move before settling for

third. A second-up winner sprinting at Del Mar in July, the dark

bay found a seam and powered through to take the GII Saratoga

Special S. in August. Freshened after that, he returned to be

second behind Brody’s Cause (Giant’s Causeway) in Keeneland’s

GI Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity S. Oct. 3, and was last seen

finishing fourth 28 days later after chasing the pace in the

GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.

"It's really making the Breeders' Cup [result] a little more

aggravating,” said Hall of Famer Kent Desormeaux, who won the

inaugural running of this race with Outta Here (Dehere) in 2002.

“I'm grateful, and certainly happy to do it for all the Louisiana

people... but he just wanted to do so much more in the

Breeders' Cup and this just ascertains my judgment of his race.

Today he just floated along and he had plenty left--something I

wasn't allowed to do in the Breeders' Cup. Today, he was just

allowed to be himself, and he can really run." Cont. p3

‘MAGIC’ PULLS OFF DELTA PRINCESS UPSET The bettors had virtually handed Saturday’s GIII Delta Downs

Princess S. to local My Trusty Cat S. romper La Appassionata

(Bernardini), but Jet Black Magic (Hold Me Back)--third in that

same heat--had other ideas. Let go at 9-1, the Carl Moore

Management colorbearer catapulted past the heavy chalk in the

lane en route to a 4 1/4-length score. Above Fashion (Paddy

O’Prado), second in the My Trusty Cat, rounded out the trifecta.

"I'm a little surprised,” admitted winning conditioner Bret

Calhoun. “[La Appassionata] showed she was an awful nice filly

in the prep--we did have a little bit of a rough trip, but we

weren't beating her that day. We thought we were running for

second or third [here] at best, but we've really liked this filly for

a long time... Today was her day." Cont. p4

Exaggerator holds off Sunny Ridge | Coady Photography AGA KHAN FAMILIES STAR AT GOFFSThe headline session of the two-day Goffs November

Taking a slight stutter-step out of the gate, Exaggerator was

well out into the center of the course passing the wire for the

first time. He challenged for the lead hitting the first bend, and

established command through splits of :47.53 and 1:13.47.

Sunny Ridge put a head in front of the favorite leaving the home

turn, but Exaggerator responded willingly, and always seemed to

have that foe’s measure, with Desormeaux putting his stick

away a stride or two before the line.

“As Kent alluded to, the fact that he was over-aggressive in the

Breeders’ Cup was not his fault, it was mine,” said Keith

Desormeaux. “I had him a little too on edge. That’s a trainer

error. I’ll take the brunt for that one, but we didn’t do a bad job

today.” Cont. p4

The Desormeaux brothers looked to have a serious

GI Kentucky Derby prospect around this time last year in the

form of GI Breeders’ Cup

Juvenile romper Texas Red

(Afleet Alex). While that

runner missed first Saturday

in May, Keith Desormeaux is

excited about Exaggerator’s

Classic prospects. The dark

bay sits second on the 2016

Kentucky Derby leaderboard

with 16 points.

“He’s bred for it, he

obviously has the

precociousness and

athleticism,” Desormeaux

said. “The Derby’s still a long

way off, but we have time to recover and it’ll be a fun trip to

take the Louisiana connections to Louisville.”

Exaggerator hails from the female family of Canadian

champions Embur’s Song (Unbridled’s Song) and Eternal Search.

Taking a left turn out of the gate, Jet Black Magic traveled at

the back of the pack into the first turn as the chalk sat closer

while kept well in the clear. La Appassionata made her move to

Calhoun and Moore were celebrating a stakes double

Saturday, having already won the Orleans S. earlier on the card

with Mayla (Sharp Humor), who is co-owned by Brad Grady.

“It’s a great day,” said Moore. “That’s two wins on the day,

and two stakes--and to have a Louisiana-bred come up and win

this kind of race, it’s unbelievable... Early on I was kind of

concerned where we were, but he gave her a great ride and she

came running down the stretch.”

Jet Black Magic, the first graded stakes winner for her second-

crop sire (by Giant’s Causeway), was a debut winner sprinting at

Indiana Downs Sept. 2 before finishing second in a grassy

Churchill optional claimer 25 days later. She is out of a half-sister

to Louisiana-bred millionaire Superior Storm (Stormy Atlantic).

Her dam has a yearling colt by Half Ours and was bred back to

You could barely see him through the torrential rain coming

down during this event, but accomplished veteran Lochte

proved a clear-cut best while earning his third-straight victory. A

39-1 upset winner of the GI Gulfstream Park Turf H. last

February, the dark bay annexed the GII Tampa Bay S. this

January. More recently, he took Gulfstream’s Mr. Steele S. Sept.

27, and was last seen grabbing the local Spider John S. Oct. 25.

Close to the pace while

three deep into the first turn,

Lochte challenged for the

lead into the home bend and

splashed away from his

competition to win for fun.

“I wasn’t too afraid of the

wet turf,” said Lochte’s

trainer Marcus Vitali. “He’ll

like a wet turf, this horse. This

was a little more than wet. I didn’t get wet. I stayed inside and

watched it. I saw him splashing through there and it looked like

[rider] Matt [Rispoli] made the right decisions. I kind of left it up

to him. I told him if it was a rough trip and he didn’t handle it,

just take care of him and we’ll live for another day. He told me

he was running well and he felt good and when he asked on

him, he exploded.” Cont. p7

Of what could be next, Vitali said, “We’re going to give him a

little time and see how he comes out of the race. You know me,

if they’re doing good and eating good and training good, we run

them. We’re not here for the season, we’re here for a reason.”

Rispoli added, “I couldn’t have asked for a better trip. I kind of

just stayed in the best part of the track which was the three

path, it seemed like. I just sat against him the whole way and

coming to the three-eighths pole, I felt like I was driving a Ferrari

to tell you the truth. Marcus did a great job getting the horse

ready for the race. He’s a racehorse.”

Lady Lara, a stakes winner and Group 3-placed for Timothy

Jarvis last year in England, bested Distorted Beauty (Invasor

{Arg}) and Sandiva in her Stateside debut for Bill Mott in

Belmont’s Pebbles S. last October. Second in Churchill’s GII Mrs.

Revere S. the following month, she resurfaced successfully in

Gulfstream’s GII Honey Fox S. Mar. 29, but was looking to snap a

five-race winless streak Saturday. Second in Belmont’s GIII Noble

Damsel S. Sept. 19, she filled out the trifecta from out of the

clouds in that venue’s GIII Athenia S. Oct. 17.

Hugging the hedge from the pocket while a bit keen into the

first turn, the bay

was taken into the

two path to attack

pacesetting Pink

Poppy (Tiznow) with

main rival Sandiva to

her outside. Pink

Poppy offered up

some resistance to

the eight pole, but

Lady Lara strode

away authoritatively to return to winning ways.

“The timing from her last race worked out well,” noted

winning trainer Bill Mott. “We shipped her down here and we

weren’t sure if we were going to run her. She took the ship well

and seemed like she looked good and was training good, so we

decided to go ahead and run.” The Hall of Famer added, “After

we got around the first turn, it was great. She got around the

first turn in good order, and she got a good post. She’s been

unlucky if you look back, where she’s drawn the 13 and 14 hole

several times. [Saturday] she was able to get an inside post so

she could at least try to save a little ground around the first

turn.”

Button Down, who made her first seven starts in England for

Lady Cecil and breeder Juddmonte, was purchased by Bill and

Carole McAlpin’s Greenwood Lodge Farm for 65,000gns at last

year’s Tattersalls December sale. She was a maiden winner

second time out for the new connections in a May 31 off-the-

turf special weight at Woodbine and added a turf allowance July

1. Second in the Aug. 15 Flaming Page S. and Sept. 13 GII

Canadian S., she was coming off a close-up fifth-place effort in

the Oct. 18 GI E. P. Taylor S.

Hustled to keep pace with the early leaders, Button Down

found herself in traffic and shuffled back going under the wire

the first time. The bay filly settled in fifth while within striking

distance and racing three wide. She moved up to challenge for

the lead on the turn, grabbed control in upper stretch and

kicked clear in the final furlong before holding sway late.

Button Down gave trainer Josie Carroll her second stakes win

of the afternoon, following shortly after Ami’s Mesa (Sky

Mesa)’s win in the Glorious Song S. at Woodbine. Button Down

is out of Juddmonte homebred and stakes-winning Modesta

(Ire) (Sadler’s Wells), a half-sister to Group 1 winners Elmaamul

He had to survive an objection, but Great Britain’s 2015

champion jockey Silvestre de Sousa earned his first North

American graded stakes win Saturday aboard East Coast shipper

Rusty Slipper. The Graham Motion pupil, whose last victory

came in Monmouth’s GIII Violet S. last August, was a close-up

third in Santa Anita’s GI Rodeo Drive S. that September before

finishing 10th--beaten less than six lengths--in the GI Breeders’

Cup F/M Turf. The dark bay resurfaced again in California to be

sixth in the GIII Robert J. Frankel S. two days after Christmas,

and was a close third in the Megahertz S. Jan. 17. Cont. p9

Seventh in the GII Santa Ana S. Mar. 15, she finished in the

same slot in Monmouth’s GIII Eatontown S. in June and over

yielding sod at Indiana Downs July 18. Rusty Slipper returned to

winning ways two back in the restricted Glen Hill Farm One

Dreamer S. at Kentucky Downs Sept. 19, and was fourth last

time in Belmont’s Oct. 17 GIII Athenia S.

Traveling sweetly in fifth behind the

free-wheeling Three Hearts, Rusty

Slipper made her move spinning for

home as the pacesetter grew leg

weary. She struck the front in

midstretch, and had too much in the

tank for fast-finishing Electrum in the

run to the line. Victor Espinoza aboard

the runner-up lodged a claim of foul

against de Sousa after Electrum found

herself in tight while Rusty Slipper to

her outside into the first turn, but the

stewards made no change.

"I had a great trip around there,”

said Brazilian-born de Souza, who moved his tack to New York in

the fall (click here for more). “I'd spoken to the trainer and he

was very confident. He said he thought he had the best horse in

the race. He told me to come away from there and get a good

spot. I was concerned about the [11] post, but she came away

well and we got a good spot. Then she went on from there."

Assistant trainer Alice Clapham added, She broke well out of

the gate, settled well and was given an excellent ride. Recently

we had been thinking about bringing her out here for [next

Sunday’s GI] Matriarch, but we liked the distance of this race

and she likes firm ground. You're more likely to get firm turf out

here than you are back east at this time of year."

"Sometimes the ones you're

granted. The horse had trained very well, we were backing up to

a distance he's had success at and we drew a good post, but I

think this year's crop of New York-breds is the strongest I've

seen in a while. You know these races are going to be

competitive, but I was pleased with his effort." Sudden Surprise

is the first foal out of Ready and Good, who also raced in the

Repole silks just like the winner’s freshman sire Giant Surprise.

In addition, she has produced two fillies by fellow Repole

Laurel Town Hall Meeting Attracts a Crowd:

A Town Hall-style meeting Friday evening at Laurel Park

attracted a crowd of 400 industry leaders, horsemen,

government officials and fans, according to a release from the

track. The meeting was assembled to discuss The Stronach

Group’s vision of the future of Maryland racing and speakers

included Tim Ritvo, COO of The Stronach Group, Maryland

Racing commissioner Bruce Quade, Tim Keefe, president of the

Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association, Cricket

Goodall, executive director of the Maryland Horse Breeders

Association, and breeder Josh Pons.

“Over the past 10 months we’ve invested nearly $20 million

into our facilities on the front and back sides,” Ritvo said.

“Handle is up nearly $60 million this year, the OTB at the

Horseshoe Casino has been a tremendous success, and the

support from horsemen has been wonderful. Mr. [Frank]

Stronach believes there is great potential in Maryland racing,

but we must continue to improve our business. We must have a

high level of integrity, have a safe environment for our

customers, take care of our retired horses, widen our network

of fans, and continue to grow the business.”

Quade spoke of a bright future for the state’s racing industry.

“This place is going to be world class,” he said. “Believe me,

The Stronach Group is walking the walk. Maryland racing’s best

days are yet to come.”

Sea Vow finished fourth in his career bow against fellow LA-

against open company next out there Sept. 4. Second to the

reopposing G’s Josh in a state-bred allowance sprinting over this

strip Oct. 22, the bay

broke outwardly from

the 10-hole, but

Alexander Castillo

quickly righted the ship

and sent the gelding to

the lead, where he

clocked moderate early

fractions. Pressed by

Mick just about every

step of the way, Sea Vow swiftly disposed of that 10-1 shot

entering the stretch and held that rival at bay after he produced
