Why can we eat fish on Fridays of Lent? Was it to save the struggling fish markets in medieval times?

I have received this question three times since the beginning of Lent this year, and I assure you, this teaching has nothing to do with struggling medieval fish markets. In Latin, the term used for meat is carne. This is one of the reasons why the Tuesday before lent is called "carnival" from the root "carne" and "vale", literally "farewell to meat."

Even though it is not used in many areas, the official language of the Western Catholic Church continues to be Latin. In Latin, the term carne, or meat, by definition only refers to the meat of warm-blooded animals. Because fish are cold blooded animals they are not included in the category of carne and therefore are not considered meat, and are discluded from the Friday abstinence. (On a side note, interestingly, frog legs, reptiles and other amphibians are cold blooded animals and are therefore not considered meat.)

The tradition of not eating meat on Fridays stems from a time when meat was much more a luxury and the common person had easy access to fish. We are called to forego luxuries in this season of Lent as a sacrifice and therefore it became a tradition to refrain from the luxury of meat.

Last year in Lent I wrote about the fact that in our modern era, many people today prefer some of the fancy fish meals to meat and meat no longer has the implication of luxury, therefore it is important for each of us individually to assess the sacrifice involved in eating crab legs in place of meat on Fridays. Obviously, another point of not eating meat on Fridays is the inconvenience of having to be concerned about what we choose to eat. This, in and of itself is a sacrifice and is therefore important to remember.

These are important question to help us assess the degree of difficulty of our sacrifices during Lent. If its not a sacrifice to eat fish on Friday, perhaps choose something more difficult as a sacrifice, like only eating vegetables or a bread and water fast. As always, our sacrifices don’t automatically make us holy, but they help condition us to control the urges of our body and avoid bigger temptations in the future. May God continue to strengthen you and lead you into greater imitation of

Jesus Christ in this season of Lent.

Bishop’s Annual Appeal - formerly known as Catholic

Community Appeal is well under way. The theme this year

is “Call to Share.” The goal for St. Francis of Assisi is

$2,700.00. The goal for the diocese is 1.6 million this year.

An invitation from Bishop Vinke: “Our Blessed Mother

gave life to the One who is our Life.” She is our loving

Mother who desires to help us in our needs. As the bishop of

the Catholic Diocese of Salina, I would like to extend an

invitation to all of our parishioners to join me in a special

statewide rosary crusade every Thursday to help us pass

a human life amendment to the Kansas Constitution.

This amendment will reverse the Kansas Supreme Court’s

decision to grant a constitutional right to abortion. I believe

that our prayers have the power to change the hearts of our

legislators and with the help of the Blessed Mother, we will

Planned Parenthood director and accomplished author Abby

Johnson who inspired the movie Unplanned, will be at the

Century 2 Convention Center in Wichita, on May 2. Tickets
