Welcome, Fr. John Hetland

This past year, Fr. Bob Grib left us to go live at the Jesuit retirement home in Michigan. When we said

goodbye to Fr. Bob, I believed that we would not get a priest to replace him. A few weeks ago, I was pleasantly surprised to get a call from the Archdiocese about Fr. John Hetland coming to St. Eugene Parish.

Fr. John was ordained in 2011 at the age of 26. He is now 30 years old (younger than Fr. Greg), and has been serving as the associate pastor of St. Barnabas Parish these past four years. The archdiocese wanted him to have another experience in a parish and thought St. Eugene would be a good place for him to continue to learn and prepare to be a pastor one day. It is becoming a common practice around the country (especially in rural dioceses) to give a priest a couple of short term assignments before giving them a pastorate. Fr. John would be assigned to St. Eugene Parish for two years. After that time, the archdiocese placement board would recommend that he stay on for three more years with us, or be moved to another parish.

I think it is quite an honor for St. Eugene Parish to be chosen as a place where a young man can continue to grow in his identity as a priest. I have always said that the people make a parish. The parishioners of St. Eugene Parish are excellent. I have been blessed to be the pastor of such a wonderful parish. I know that we will be a good place for Fr. John, and, I am sure he will have a lot to contribute to our own spiritual growth.

The only down side of all of this is that with Fr. Greg being 34 years old, and Fr. John being 30 years old, I will soon be known as the old priest in the parish. But, then again, thank God for Fr. Phil Grib.

Yours in Christ,

Next Sunday, September 13,

we will welcome Fr. John Hetland at the 11:30 am Mass

with a reception following Mass in the church vestibule.

FEAR NOT In these times, there is plenty to be afraid of, if we only look around. It seems that every day the news media have yet more bad news to tell: wars, disease, terrorism, drought, social unrest, and more. Some people have stopped using clock radios to wake up in the morning, preferring a jarring buzzer to the even more jarring morning news. What more do we need before we realize that we are finite creatures, and while there is much we can do to make our world better, ultimately there is a lot that is simply not within our grasp? To this our loving God says, “Be strong, fear not!” We must do what we can to make our world a better and safer place, but we must also realize our limits and that our ultimate safety is in the hands of God. We can be comforted by the realization that God loves us beyond measure, and will give us every help in our efforts to make our world a loving and safe place for everyone. Copyright © J. S. Prayer with Scripture We invite you to an encounter of prayer where you can stop from the hurry of the moment and listen to God through God’s Word, in silence, meditation, ad-oration and contemplation. In this short but intense time, we listen to a talk that introduces us into the understanding of the Word of God, which later, we reflect on and meditate in an attitude of faith, discov-ering what God is trying to reveal to us. The prayer is accompanied by the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament with songs to help the faithful enter more into prayer.

Christian communities have lived in the Middle East for 2000 years. Now their existence is being threatened. Radical terrorists have been killing, enslaving, and persecuting them. In 2003, 1.65 million Christians lived in Iraq—today there are only 300,000. Christians in Syria numbered around 2 million. At this time approximately half a million have left their homes fleeing from this brutality. Please pray for those suffering in refugee camps. Wear orange.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Orthodox Christians have a saying about the reality of sin. They speak of “this holy and sinful Church, which we love.” We know all too well the effects of sin on the faith community. From our earliest days, we have seen baptism as a place where the old self dies in Christ, dies to sin, and rises to new life. Our ancestors in faith held that post-baptismal major sin was unthinkable. Yet, as one Baptist minister once explained, “We know that sin is drowned in the water, but it would appear that the devil is a pretty good swimmer.” The origins of the sacrament of penance have to do with a similar insight among bishops in the early church. A critical question for them was whether or not a baptized person who had committed a public sin could be re-established in church life, forgiven, and restored. Forgiven, yes, was an early answer, but restored was another matter. Penance would be a permanent lifestyle for the forgiven; they would live at the margins of the community, clearly visible in distinctive garments, and their access to the table of the Eucharist was restricted. The harsh beginnings of public penance led in time to a true treasure of our tradition: the ability to find our way home through the ministry of others, and a way for all of us sinners to experience the gentle embrace of our forgiving Lord. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

We ask all of our parishioners, if you have a loved one serving in the military,

to please contact the rectory office to give us the name of the soldier, so the

whole parish can pray for your loved one. A book in the church vestibule is

available for inscribing the names of all military personnel. This book will be part of the offertory

procession from now until the war is over.

A PRAYER LORD, HOLD OUR TROOPS IN YOUR LOVING HANDS. PROTECT THEM AS THEY PROTECT US. BLESS THEM AND THEIR FAMILIES FOR THE SELFLESS ACTS THEY PERFORM FOR US IN OUR TIME OF NEED. WE ASK THIS IN THE NAME OF JESUS OUR LORD AND SAVIOR. AMEN

We pray for our loved ones

who are serving in any branch of the Armed Forces during this time of conflict.

OUR MISSION STATEMENT

Our mission as Catholics united in faith at St. Eugene Parish is to help bring God to people and people to

God. Through evangelization, education and being of service to each other, we strive to make our parish

community a holistic community in body, mind and spirit. It is our goal to develop, support, encourage and

empower one another in our parish ministries, so that each person can reach their human and Christian po-

tential. We are enthused about the future of St. Eugene and the whole Catholic Church and we pledge our

participation in that future. We seek dialogue and open communication with all parishioners in fulfilling the

needs of our parish. While recognizing the cultural diversities in our community, we will strive to bring all peo-

ple together in Christ under a common bond of faith, hope and love.
