3
But the sunThe glorious brave shining golden sunHe fights the Darkness demonAll night every nightAnd by morningHersquos whole again and back to ruleThatrsquos where I think the sun goes at nightInto the mouth of a monsterAfter a terrible fightIrsquom clever arenrsquot I sister

5
I thinkThat maybe while it is nightHere on earthIt is a glorious day inThe oceans darkest depthsAnd the mermaids come dancing outOf their undersea cavesTo frolic with the sharks
6
We have seen it ourselvesWhen we went to Mumbai last summerRememberHow the sun lets go of the skyEach evening at duskAnd slides soundlessly into the sea Thatrsquos were I think the sun goes at nightTo flood the underwaterWith golden lightIrsquom clever arenrsquot I sister

9
And his wife like MotherFusses over him shushes the kidsCovers him with a night-darkblanket of starsAnd hopes his snoringwill not keep her awake all night
10
And every morning the sunShrugs off his star-blanketPaints the dawn sky red with his sleepy eyesAnd gets back to workThatrsquos where I think the sun goes at nightHome to bed until it is lightIrsquom clever arenrsquot I sister

FIND OUT MORE
Where does the sun go at nightThe earth is a sphere that revolves around the sunalong with the seven other planets of the solarsystem One revolution of the earth around the suntakes one calendar year
While it is going around the sun the earth also spinson its own axis Each lsquospinrsquo takes 24 hours that is aday and a nightWhichever part of the earth is facing the sun hasday At the same time the other half of the earth(the part turned away from the sun) has night Thenthe earth slowly spins around and the half that wasin darkness (that is the half that was turned awayfrom the sun) now faces the sun So this half hasday and the other half which turned away from thesun has night So in reality the sun does not reallygo anywhere at night
17
Try this experiment
To understand how the earthrsquos rotation causes dayand night try this simple exercise
You needA small rubber ballA big torchSome felt pensA friend
What to doImagine that the rubber ball is the earth Using thefelt pens draw the map of the world on the rubberball Now imagine that the torch is the sun Ask yourfriend to switch on the torch
18
Place the ball (the earth) directly in the path of thetorch beam (sunlight) so that India is facing the sunTurn the ball around slowly What do you see WhenIndia is facing the sun the Americas are in darkness
As India begins to turn away from the sun Europeand Africa come into the lsquosunlightrsquo Then as thelsquoearthrsquo continues to turn the Americas come intothe light and India becomes dark
Keep turning the ball till India faces the sunagain This is what happens every time the earthturns around on its axis During each rotation India(and every other place on earth) has one day andone night

Oh yes you are little brother oh yes you areAnd maybe you are right tooBut in the books that I have readThat is not what they said Then what did they say sisterWhat did they sayWhat do you think little brotherWhat do you thinkI think I thinkTell me little brother what do you think
7
Of course you are little brotherOf course you areAnd maybe you are right tooBut in the books that I have readThat is not what they saidThen what did they say sisterWhat did they sayWhat do you think little brotherWhat do you think
8
I think I thinkTell me little brother what do you thinkI thinkThat maybe there is no mysteryThat maybe the sun is just like FatherHe goes home tired each nightAfter a long dayAt work
11
I know you are little brother I know you areAnd maybe yoursquore right tooBut in the books that I have readThat is not what they said Then what did they say sisterWhat did they sayCome here little brotherIrsquoll tell you what they saidThey said they saidTell me sister what did they say

13
And they saidEvery spin of the earthIs as long as a dayAnd a nightI asked about the sun sisterI asked about the sunI am coming to that little brotherBe patient now
14
They saidWhen our part of the earthThe half where we liveIs turned towards the sunWe have dayAnd when the other halfIs turned towards the sunAnd oursIs turned awayWe have night
15
They saidThatrsquos where the sun goes at nightTo bathe the other half in glorious lightCan it be true sister can it be trueI canrsquot say little brother I canrsquot sayBut in all the books that I have readThat is what they said

They saidWhen our part of the earthThe half where we liveIs turned towards the sunWe have dayAnd when the other halfIs turned towards the sunAnd oursIs turned awayWe have night
15
They saidThatrsquos where the sun goes at nightTo bathe the other half in glorious lightCan it be true sister can it be trueI canrsquot say little brother I canrsquot sayBut in all the books that I have readThat is what they said
16
