Tell us about your dojo The school opened in 2013 with only three students, but now has 27 students. What makes Ninjutsu different is it develops the mind, body and spirit, and also teaches students to find harmony with nature. Students learn how to become more active in sport, find focus and silence, gain self-confidence and self-respect, connect body and mind, and learn how to handle conflict. n How did it all start? I started doing martial arts at the age of 16 and studied Ninjutsu until I joined the police in 1989 for what was then called national service. My specialized training during this period focused on VIP protection and urban warfare. And after national service? I continued my training in Ninjutsu. In 1995 I graded to black belt through the South African Ninjutsu Federation (SANF). I was fortunate to be graded in the presence of the legendary Master Barry Pictor, 6th Dan Koga Ryu Ninjutsu. I currently hold a 5th degree black belt in Koga Ryu Ninjutsu and am a proud member of the Black Dragon Fighting Society in the USA. How did martial arts shape your career path? Through the years I was instrumental in teaching security personnel and police recruits in close combat. I had the fortune to oversee the protection of local and international celebrities, like the boxer Evander Holyfield, during his visit to South Africa. Thanks to martial arts I have a career in risk management, hospitality security, and CCTV and covert surveillance. It has come full circle, and he now uses his job experience to teach the students at his Ninjutsu dojo how to handle difficult situations.
