Structure of American Freemasonry

American Freemasonry resembles two sets of stairs that begin and end together. This is shown on a chart which is retained by the Secretary. A Mason’s first step is to become an Entered Apprentice. He climbs to the third step where most Masons stay. If he wants to proceed in Masonic hierarchy he enters either the Scottish or York Rite. Many authorities say the Scottish Rite was begun by Scot’s émigré’s in France; the York Rite is named after York, England, where by legend, the first Masonic body was organised. Victorian Freemasons tend to follow the Scottish Rite In the Scottish Rite a Mason climbs 30 steps, or degrees. These are noted at each step but have a different name between northern and southern Masons. As noted above each degree is signified by a step and relates to a moral teaching, hence, the more we learn the higher we progress. To earn a degree the candidate learns the moral and participates in a specific ceremony dramatizing the advancement.

Page 4: Summons: August 2013

A 32nd degree is the highest degree a Mason can earn. Only the Supreme Council, ruling body of the Rite can award the 33rd degree. Rule 2 of the United Grand Lodge of Antient, Free and Accepted Masons of Victoria declares that Freemasonry consists of the following degrees:

the Entered Apprentice; the Fellow Craft; the Master Mason; the Mark Master Mason; the Supreme Degree of Royal Arch Masons.

Craft Freemasonry embraces the three first-named of the abovementioned steps/ degrees. Following the completion of the Master Mason ceremony, i.e. raised to the 3rd degree, it is possible to advance to the 4th degree as a Mark Master Mason and to the Supreme Degree of Royal Arch Masons, however, it is recommended that new members learn the morals of the first three degrees/ steps, thoroughly before they consider advancing to steps four and five. A Mason embracing the York Rite advances by 10 degrees, known by name and not degrees, such as, temple workman, Past Master (Virtual), Israel tribesman, High Priest of Jews, King Hiram of Tyre, Knight of Malta, Knight Templar, equal in prestige to 33rd degree in the Scottish Rite. Most important of many Masonic symbols are the open Bible or a book on which the candidate takes an oath and a solemn obligation to a Supreme Being, with the square and compass displayed on the book. A letter “G” is displayed in the Lodge room denoting God and the all seeing eye is also present at all Lodge meetings.

Well this has only taken 25 years to come about! My thanks go out to first of all the members of the Brunswick United Lodge for allowing me to assume the Chair of Solomon again.

I think all will agree with me that the Installation was first rate, and the Grand Lodge Team is to be congratulated for their work on the night. To all the brethren who have taken office, I thank you all. It was also great to see friends from my former Lodge and ex members of this Lodge who came to the Installation. We hope that this is not their last visit to us. Our Lodge program will be another busy year and also to just to make it more interesting we are up to be re-accredited this year. This means I will be visiting a lot more this year to try and emulate the former holders of this Office; not an easy task to do! Finally to all the Members of the Lodge again thank you and let's have a great year in Freemasonry. Fraternally

Edition No 121 - Tuesday 20th August 2013

Prepared by RWBro W N (Bill) Wilkinson PJGW - 93865709

Dear Friends, Just a note to keep all in the happiness of the atmosphere of your Lodge - and that's a good place to be! Tuesday the 16th July brought the end of one Masonic year but also the beginning of a new Masonic year.. This of course was our Installation Night for the year 2013/2014 when WBro Graeme James David Hay was installed as the Worshipful Master of our Lodge by the Deputy Grand Master RWBro Hillel Benedykt assisted by the Grand Lodge Ceremonial Team. What a ceremony it was! All the gold regalia, the precision of movement, the manner of delivery of charges and investitures and the friendly sincere manner of all members of the Ceremonial Team made this a most memorable installation ceremony - I am sure it will stick in WBro Graeme's memory for ever. Of course this was Graeme's night but we must not forget the outgoing WBro Nick LeRay-Meyer AM for the magnificent year of dedicated service to our Lodge within Lodge, and the greater community - it has been a revelation to many of us caught up in the inertia of this human dynamo. Well done worthy brother! The South was a different set-up with the new subdued wall lighting and candles lighting the tables providing a soft, gentle air of peace in which to enjoy the esprit-de-corps of our brethren. To this was

added a fine, 3 course delicious meal provided by our caterers - Kevin and Marie Sloan and their daughter. With almost 80 present the serving of dishes and clean up was made so much easier when there were approximately 15 stewards on the job - "many hands make light work". Thank you brethren! What the Dicky Bird Said. Thank you to Graeme Hay and his good lady (Claire) for their thoughtful little gift - a very handy key ring, level and tape measure; one may contemplate the Masonic morals in those words. Wasn't it great to see three of our Fellowcrafts given a front-row view of the proceedings. It was good to see Charles Doumany, Alex Hess, Len Glazner, Allen Hansford, Kamil Saliba and Sam Sala back in Lodge. Also a sincere welcome to former members Edmond Mansour, recently installed as Worshipful Master of Douta Galla Lodge and his brother Sam, who were among 39 visitors for the night. Faces I've Missed. Maurice Hooper, Bashir Haifa, Merj Haifa, Graham Scholes, Tom Sporton, Terry Ramadge and Bashir Younes. Our Treasurer, Gary Beckett, is enjoying the warmer climate of Queensland - playing bowls (I think) - while our new DC, Philip Scharp is on a business(?) trip.

Page 6: Summons: August 2013

Happy Birthday Doug Gregory (92), Len Glazner (90), Rupert Knox (88), Neil Pratt (81), Fred Stewart (80), Don Wilkin (79), Frank Wiley (57) and Knut Ratzeburg (27). May the GAOU grant to each all you may desire for your future good health and happiness. Those in need of tender Loving Care Darryl Glasson - continuing rehabilitation with his knee Arnold Sharpe - still not well Bruce Hocking - back problems Peter Jones - continues a slow improvement, limited driving

- not up to night driving yet Ray D'AMato rehabilitation Bill Butler - has had by-pass - now recuperating at home John Beeson - continues to keep nursing staff on their toes! Chrissy Beeson - not well but presses on regardless Charlie Maule - committed to nursing home care May the GAOU grant a full and speedy recovery to all.

Social Happenings

• Presentation Luncheon (Sunday 23rd June) at the Glenroy Bowling Club - a great time had by all.

• "Christmas in July" (Sunday 21st July) at the Yarra Valley Country Club - a merry Time is assured.

Social Club Meeting The next meeting of the Lodge's Social Club will be held at the Brunswick Centre on Tuesday 27th August. All Brethren and their partners are most welcome - let's make this a great year for Graeme and Claire! Have You Heard?

• Urgent House Calls. The Doctor is at home when the phone rings and he hears the familiar voice of a colleague on the other end of the line. "We need a fourth for Poker", says the friend. "I'll come right away", says the doctor in his best bed-side voice. As he is putting on his coat his wife asks , "Is it serious?" "Oh, yes quite serious", says the doctor gravely. "In fact, there three doctors there already!"

• Quick Thinking A mother was preparing pancakes for her two sons, Kevin aged 5 and Ryan aged 3. The boys began to argue over who would get the first pancake. Their mother saw an opportunity for a moral lesson so she said...."If Jesus was here today, He would say...'Let my brother have the first pancake, I can wait". Kevin turned to his younger brother and said, "Ryan, you can be Jesus!"

Page 7: Summons: August 2013

• Oops!

Attendance call on the first day back at school in Bankstown, Sydney. The teacher takes the roll call: "Mustafa El Ekh Zeri?" "Here." Achmed El Ekh Zeri?" "Here" "Fatima Al Chadoury?" "Here". Abdul Alu Ohlmi?" "Here" "Mi Cha El Oh Ben?" Silence in the classroom. "Mi Cha El Oh Ben?" Continued silence as everyone looks around the room. The teacher repeated, "Is there any child here called Mi Cha El Oh Ben?" A boy puts his hand up and says, "Sorry teacher, I think that's me. It's pronounced Michael O'Brien!"

• A Rose The two gentlemen were talking, and one said, "Last night we went to a new restaurant and it was really great. I would recommend it highly." The other man said, "What is the name of the restaurant?" The first man thought and thought and finally said, "What's the name of that flower you give to someone you love? You know, the one that's red and has thorns." "Do you mean a rose?" "Yes that's the one" replied the man. He then turned towards the kitchen and yelled, "Rose, what's the name of that restaurant we went to last night?"

• If You Don't Ask!!!!

Hospital regulations require a wheelchair for patients being discharged. However, while working as a student nurse, I found one elderly gentleman already dressed and sitting on the bed with a suitcase at his feet, who insisted that h didn't need my help to leave the hospital. After a chat about rules being rules, he reluctantly let me wheel him to the elevator. On the way down I asked if his wife was meeting him. "I don't know" he said. "She is still upstairs in the bathroom changing out of her hospital gown!!!"

Be at peace with the world.

Charity Happenings

Sausage Sizzles A small band of Lodge members and partners continue to give their time to conduct "Sausage Sizzles" at Bunnings Coburg one Friday each month - though occasionally twice a month. As a result, the Lodge, through the Social Club, has raised in excess of $10,000 to date and has been able to support a number of Community agencies - particularly those who receive no government support. With a number of our members still working, they have been unable to volunteer their time to assist on a Friday. However, for those who would like to assist - Now is your chance! Why? Well we have been allocated a weekend date!!!

Page 8: Summons: August 2013

Thus I am looking for volunteers to man the "Sausage Sizzle" stand on Sunday 25th August at Bunnings Coburg. Set-up starts at 8.00 am and I'll need one member to assist me complete that phase. We have to have sausages available for purchase by 9.00 am (earlier if we can) right through until 4.00 pm. Each "shift" needs a team of three; one cooking, one serving the order and one collecting the money (the latter is "un-gloved" whereas the "chef" and "server" have to wear food-handling gloves. Each shift is for two hours - which passes very quickly believe me! So! Let's hear from you. Now is your chance to step up and be counted as a "doer" not a "wanna be"!! Market Day The "Market Day" we held at the Centre on Saturday 20th July was, despite the atrocious weather, relatively successful. However, the rain clearly kept many folks at home! I was particularly grateful for the number of Lodge members and partners who provided assistance during the day. A special "well done" to those ladies who prepared the various types of soup that we sold, along with crusty bread, to both the buyers as well as the sellers throughout the day. The decision to sell soup rather than have a sausage sizzle proved to be a sound decision by our Social Club. Unlike "market days" at another Centre, a number of members and partners from other Lodges also visited the market. This, despite the overall low numbers, has resulted in the sellers asking to return again in November for a bigger market day - which will probably include a "trash and treasure" option.

Finally, if you know of a local community support group that requires some assistance, please let me have the details. We don't provide money as such, but can purchase equipment and the like. Cheers
