Encore Courses for 6th Grade Green Architecture

Today’s students have grown up in an age of “green” choices. In this unit, students learn how to apply this concept to the fields of architecture and construction by exploring dimensioning, measuring, and architectural sustainability as they design affordable housing units using Autodesk’s® 3D architectural design software.

Information Technology Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of Information Technology. Within this class, students will complete units of instruction, along with project/activities. The units of instruction consist of the following: Google Applications Fundamentals, Introduction to Google Docs, and Introduction to Google Slides.

Science & Technology Science impacts the technology of yesterday, today, and the future. Students apply the concepts of physics, chemistry, and nanotechnology to STEM activities and projects, including making ice cream, cleaning up an oil spill, and discovering the properties of nano-materials.

Design & Modeling Students apply the design process to solve problems and understand the influence of creativity and innovation in their lives. They work in teams to design a playground and furniture, capturing research and ideas in their engineering notebooks. Using Autodesk® design software, students create a virtual image of their designs and produce a portfolio to showcase their innovative solutions.

Explore Your World Explore your world is a course that provides students with an overview of the world's numerous cultures in order to excite and prepare them for learning a world language in the near future. Through stories, videos, research projects and more the students will develop wonder, interest and appreciation of different cultures from around the world.

Inquiries / Ideas There are times and places where communicating your voice requires you to back up your view with the facts and opinions of others who may have more experience or education than you do. This is what the research process is all about. At the end of the research process in this course you will be able to communicate your view on a topic and be able to back up your view with solid information.

Design Squad During this course students will engage in several challenges using the engineering design process. These STEM challenges will have students using collaborative team-work, problem solving skills, technology, science content and math skills to solve real-world problems.

Drawing/Painting Drawing and painting in the sixth grade is foremost an exercise in the elements of art. This is a foundational class with basic instruction on how anyone can learn to advance drawing skills. In the class we look at various artists and analyze how artist’s understand and utilize the elements of design in their work in order to make it more engaging.

3D Art This class is intended to introduce the Elements of Art through the exploration of different sculptural techniques, such as ceramics and other medias. Students will develop a better understanding of Art through creating sculptures and being able to explain and defend their artistic choices using appropriate vocabulary.

Personal Fitness In this class students will receive a basic understanding of common fitness (exercise ball, jump rope, etc.) & individual sports (light weight dumb bells, medicine balls, steps, foam rollers, bands, etc.)

Team Sports In this class students will learn a basic understanding of common team sports (basketball,, dodgeball, ultimate Frisbee, wiffle-ball, kickball, etc.

Wellness The students will learn three layers of the skin and learn how they function. The students will understand the need to care for the skin and strategies we can do to care for the skin. The students will reflect on topics regarding tobacco in terms of lawsuits, advertisements, secondhand smoke, cost of tobacco and the use of tobacco products.

Health The students will be able to learn the components of health and the importance to their own wellness. They will reflect on how they take responsibility for their own health. The students will reflect on their physical, mental and social health to analyze their own health habits by completing Total Health Assessment.

Adventures in Recorders Adventures in Recorders will teach students to play beginning to advanced recorder songs using proper embouchure, technique and posture. Through performance, they will demonstrate knowledge of grade-appropriate pitches and rhythms.

Procedures and Processes

• Volunteers – All volunteers that work one-on-one with a student or chaperone a field trip must be fingerprinted at the Main office. There is no cost to be fingerprinted and your fingerprints are good for 5 years. The Main Office is open Monday thru Friday from 8:00AM – 11:00AM in the morning and from 1:00PM- 4:00PM in the afternoon for finger- printing. Parents do not have to be fingerprinted to eat lunch with their child or attend a school function on campus.

• Phone Calls and Emails for Summerside Staff – Summerside Parents, communication is a key to our success in

providing your children the education they deserve. In order to expedite communication with you and our teaching staff, the best time during the day for our teachers to return your phone calls and your emails directed to them is 4:00pm each day. Our Teachers also have a window on most days from 8:30-8:50AM but often are in meetings in the morning. The daily schedule is built so the teachers are teaching students from 9:20AM – 4:00PM daily with a ½ lunch in the middle of the day. As a result, it is not possible for teachers to check emails and make phone calls during the instructional day. If they did they would not be teaching the students. If you need to contact a teacher during the instructional day and it is an emergency please call our school office at 513-947-7900 and our Office Team can serve you promptly. We are here to serve you and the process above will streamline important communication during the school day while allowing our teachers to focus on the important work of educating our children.

• Lost and Found – At Summerside we have a process for making sure lost and found items get back to their owner.

Any items (such as coats, hats, gloves, lunchboxes, books, etc.) that are found are taken each day to the Cafeteria. All students at Summerside know that during noon lunch before they head out that this is the location they can go to and find misplaced items. Our Cafeteria Supervisors make sure all items brought to the Cafeteria are returned to their own- er in the Cafeteria during noon lunch. The last week of each month, Cafeteria Supervisors notify all students to check lost and found each day. On the last day of the month, the lost and found items are bagged up, kept for one additional week and if not claimed sent to Goodwill. Lost and found items such as glasses, purses, wallets, and money are held in the Office where they can be claimed.

• Food Brought into School (Birthday Treats) - All Students at Summerside eat the lunch provided by the Cafeteria or

by their packed lunches. We celebrate our children’s Birthdays at Summerside. Children's names are read over the Announcements, are provided a birthday pencil, and they are highlighted in front of their classmates. Parents are wel- come to eat lunch with their children in our Cafeteria daily and especially on their birthday. If you plan on providing a birthday treat in the form of food for your child please bring food for your child only on their birthday. We have children with food allergies and students whose parents are very particular about what their child eats. As a result, Summerside students will eat only the food their students pack that is provided by their parents or the food bought in the cafeteria during the school day. All food will be eaten in our cafeteria also.

• Lunch Guests – Parents/Guardians/and Grandparents are encouraged and welcome to eat lunch with their children in

the Summerside Cafeteria during their child’s lunch period. Two special tables have been set up for our noon lunch period guests. Our guests will need to check in at the school office, where our office staff will have you sign in, pro- vide you a visitor’s badge, and direct you to the cafeteria.
