Summer associates come to Baker Hostetler to learn about the Firm and to get a sense of what it would be like to practice law here. We want our summer associates to be challenged by their work, enjoy their interaction with our lawyers and clients, and to be confident that they made the right decision in beginning their legal careers with us.

We recognize that it is equally important to listen and learn from our summer associates, who are an indispensable source of new and different insights for the Firm. Feedback from summer associates continues to place Baker Hostetler as a frontrunner among the nation’s top summer associate programs. Our #9 ranking on the 2013 Vault list for “Overall Best Summer

Associate Program” marks the second year the Firm has made the top ten.

We asked our summer associates across the country to tell us about their experiences. So here, in their own words, is an inside look at life at Baker Hostetler.

CincinnatiDuring my interviews, it was readily apparent that Baker Hostetler was a firm that emphasized a complete learning experience. The Firm not only offered an opportunity for challenging legal work, but an opportunity to grow my professional skills as well. Besides helping in depositions, observing trial preparations, and drafting patent prosecution materials, I attended networking seminars and client events in order to develop the skills necessary not just for my first few years as an attorney but for a successful career in law. Though I have a focus in patent law, I had the opportunity to work in multiple areas including data breach law, labor and employment law, and commercial litigation.

Baker Hostetler is unique in that it is a large firm with a small firm feel. The partners and associates are always accessible and are enthusiastic about giving a range of practical advice— from efficient research to effective client correspondence. Overall, Baker Hostetler provides a great deal of practical and real-world experience. If I had the chance to do it all over again, I would enthusiastically accept.

I would highly recommend Baker Hostetler to my classmates. The Firm has an excellent national reputation, and summer associates are given significant work. I saw the research and analysis that I provided in memoranda used in actual motions submitted to court. I also had the opportunity to draft various motions, the first of which was filed without one substantive change being made. It’s a rewarding feeling to know your work is being used in actual cases and affects the decisions partners and associates make about how to go forward with a matter.

I was also impressed with Baker Hostetler’s commitment to community service and pro bono work. As a summer associate, I was able to participate in a charity dodgeball tournament the Firm co-sponsored to benefit disadvantaged Boy Scouts. Attorneys at Baker Hostetler truly make a concerted effort to give what time they can to help their community.

Cleveland I am from Cleveland, and I wanted to stay in the area for my summer associate tenure. But I also wanted the experience of working for a big firm. Baker Hostetler offers that experience as one of the larger firms in the country, but it originated in the Midwest and kept that value system. That was important to me.

Summer associates in the office are warmly welcomed and are considered part of Baker Hostetler’s team. I’ve had the opportunity to work on several substantive projects, including writing for the Class Action Defense blog. It’s rewarding to see my own work published. While I’ve been given notable responsibility, I can accomplish my tasks with confidence. The Firm provides classes and training to guide summer associates on their professional development path, and I was also assigned a mentor, which has made my experience here exceptionally worthwhile.

Baker Hostetler offers the elusive combination of sophisticated legal work and a thoroughly enjoyable office environment. Throughout my summer with the Firm, I worked on a wide variety of projects including assignments on tax, trusts and estates, bankruptcy, civil litigation and capital markets. One of the best perks of the program was the opportunity to work in a wide variety of practice areas and with a wide variety of attorneys, partners and associates alike.

ColumbusDuring the interview process, I was struck by how genuinely warm, friendly and down-to-earth everyone at Baker Hostetler was. From the most senior partner to the youngest associates, all were welcoming, eager to get to know me and seemed to genuinely enjoy their work at the Firm. In addition, I learned about the complex and substantive matters the Columbus office engages in, and that there are often opportunities for young associates to be involved in those kinds of matters. That was very exciting to me.

I also appreciated the Firm’s commitment to and involvement with The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law which goes above and beyond many other firms in Columbus. I’m impressed that Baker Hostetler is willing to give back and to be engaged in helping to shape the professional development of future legal professionals. One of the biggest distinguishing factors for me was how seriously the Firm takes its diversity initiatives. There is a clear commitment to diversity that is backed by action, not just words, and everyone that I met with had respect for that commitment.

Baker Hostetler treated me and my fellow summer associates not as a class, but as individuals. This was apparent from the Firm’s dedication to its mentoring program and willingness to tailor our summer work and social calendars to our interests. I was able to explore and narrow my interests by gaining experience in four different practice areas – litigation, business, tax, and labor and employment. Baker Hostetler’s commitment to me as an individual encouraged me to take full ownership of my work, which made for an ideal learning environment.

DenverWhat I appreciate most about Baker Hostetler is the culture. It’s a collegial environment where everyone’s door is always open. People across the Firm, including partners, are accessible, enthusiastic and genuinely inclusive of others. Baker Hostetler truly invests in the summer associates’ experience by giving us meaningful work that pushes us outside of our comfort zones. Every assignment presents a different set of challenges, but we are supported every step of the way. My projects varied incredibly and were both challenging and interesting. I’ve had the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with cases involving arbitration, divorces, employment and labor, and even wrongful death. I learned something new every single day, and I could not have asked for a better summer experience.

The summer associate program is an amazing educational and employment experience. As a second year summer associate, I was able to develop my writing and analytical skills, in addition to gaining practical experience working with some of the leading attorneys in the Denver area. Last summer, I formed long-lasting relationships with attorneys who have since become my friends and mentors. This summer, I strengthened those relationships all while working in an environment where the attorneys and staff have been attentive, thoughtful, understanding and dedicated to offering clients the best legal services available.

— Baker Hostetler serves as court-appointed counsel to the SIPA Trustee for the liquidation of Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC (BLMIS). Bankruptcy Partner and SIPA Trustee Irving H. Picard oversees the liquidation proceeding in collaboration with the Baker Hostetler team, which is led by Litigation Partner David J. Sheehan. The Madoff Recovery Initiative is a challenging, multi-faceted effort that requires thorough investigation of global banking practices, feeder funds and financial instruments, among countless other issues surrounding the BLMIS financial fraud.

Four years into the ongoing work, the SIPA Trustee and his Baker Hostetler counsel have had unprecedented success, having recovered or entered into agreements to recover more than $9.1 billion, representing 52 percent of the approximately $17.3 billion in principal estimated to have been lost in the Ponzi scheme. These recoveries exceed prior restitution efforts related to Ponzi schemes both in terms of dollar value and percentage of stolen funds recovered. Initial distributions to BLMIS customers to date currently total more than $1.1 billion, comprising the $330 million the SIPA Trustee has distributed from the Customer Fund and the more than $800 million in advances the SIPA Trustee has requested from the Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC) and also distributed to BLMIS customers.

— A Baker Hostetler trial team is proceeding with litigation on behalf of a coalition of companies in a massive nationwide arbitration against 48 states. The arbitration involves a potential reduction of more than $1 billion in the tobacco industry’s payments for 2003 under the 1998 Master Settlement Agreement resolving states’ claims for health care costs related to tobacco use.
