Summer Social will be held every Sunday at 9:40

until 10:00 AM through the dates of July 7-

August 18. It will be located in our narthex, our

welcome area in front of the sanctuary. The

Summer Social is time to visit with and make

friends in the church; have coffee or juice and a

bakery treat; catch up on summer plans and trips;

and most importantly, to welcome each other to

worship.

The following statement was unanimously approved by the Session on June 18,2013: Second Presbyterian Church - Little Rock, Arkansas

• has been a sponsor of Boy Scouts of America Troop #604 since 1977,

• has adopted and supports a Statement of Welcome and Inclusiveness which states that our doors are open to all "regardless of age, race, gender, sexual orientation, economic or family status, ethnic background, mental or physical abilities,"

• believes that the recent actions of the Boy Scouts of America to increase that organization's inclusiveness in Boy Scout troops is consistent with the spirit of our Statement of Welcome and Inclusiveness,

• ratifies its support of the Boy Scouts of America and Troop #604. The statement has been sent to the leaders of Troop #604 and the Quapaw Area Council. They have responded with much appreciation. The statement was drafted and submitted to the Session by the Social Justice Advocacy Committee. Members of that committee are Don Hollingsworth, Chair, Sharon Otwell, Jim Guy Tucker, Ruth Shepherd, Jackson Farrow, Susan Goldner and Mike Gavigan.

The Church Office will be closed Thursday, July 4 in observance of Independence Day.

On July 8, Lindy Vogado will begin her work as the Associate Pastor of Belonging and Outreach at Second Presbyterian Church. We are very excited to welcome Lindy. Lindy’s husband is Dr. Robert Williamson, Assistant Professor in the Department of Religion at Hendrix College, and Parish Associate here at Second Church.

“Everywhere Fun Fair…..Where God’s World Comes Together” “Love the Lord your God…..and love your neighbor as yourself.” Luke 10:27

What a great week we had at Vacation Bible School (June 17-20)……with 150-160 children, 10-15 youth helpers, and 30 adult volunteers participating in all the fun! The children learned how neighbors are friendly, giving, forgiving, and welcoming through a variety of activities including Bible stories, art, hands-on mission projects, “science” experiments, recreation, and music. Thanks to all the wonderful volunteers, the Second Presbyterian Preschool staff, and the Second Presbyterian Church staff for making this wonderful week possible for our children and many children in our community. Special thanks to Caroline Crow who served as our VBS Coordinator this year!!

SECOND PRESBYTERIAN DOCUMENTARY FILM SERIES

SUNDAYS - July 21, 28 and August 4

4:00 - 6:00 PM; Second Hall

POPCORN, DRINKS, AND MOVIES!!!!

July 21 - “Dirt! The Movie” - This award winning 2009 American documentary, narrated by Jamie Lee

Curtis, was inspired by the book Dirt: The Ecstatic Skin of the Earth by William Bryant Logan. The film

explores the relationship between humans and soil, including its necessity for human life and impacts by

society. Facilitator: Scharmel Roussel, Executive Director of Arkansas Interfaith Power and Light.

July 28 - “Kansas vs. Darwin” - Convened by Creationists and organized by proponents of Intelligent

Design, the Kansas Board of Education hearings on evolution were the subject of worldwide attention.

This film takes you inside one of the most talked-about events in modern history through exclusive footage

and in-depth interviews on both sides of the debate. More than a political documentary, Kansas vs. Darwin

takes you to the dark heart of the culture wars, examining the confusing crossroads of politics, religion,

science and education. Facilitator: Alan Diekman

August 4 - “Pray the Devil Back to Hell” - This documentary, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, is the

astonishing story of the women in Liberia who took on the warlords and regime of dictator Charles Taylor in

the midst of a brutal civil war, and won a once unimaginable peace for their shattered country in 2003. It is

the story of ordinary women—mothers, grandmothers, aunts and daughters, both Christian and Muslim—

who, armed only with white T-shirts and the courage of their convictions, faced down the killers who had

turned Liberia into hell on earth. This story is a compelling example of how grassroots activism can alter

the history of nations.

Something new for Completed 1st-4th Graders…

“Big Kids Summer Book Club”

Based on the popularity of our regular Preschool Story Times……we are trying something new for our elementary-aged children. There are so many wonderful story books in our Children’s Library that are too long and involved for our littlest ones, Miss Jeannie wants to try a “Summer Book Club” for children who have completed 1st-4th grade. Summer Book Club Dates:

Monday, July 8 Monday, July 22

Monday, August 5 We will meet from 5:00 - 6:00 p.m. on each of these Mondays. We will begin by reading books from our library and learning together how these stories can help us grow in our faith and live each day as children of God. At the end of the summer, we will decide if we want to continue through the school year and perhaps read some longer, chapter books that we can meet to explore together. If you are interested in being part of this new adventure, please contact Jeannie Ford (227-0000, [email protected])

CHAPEL REFRESHING The chapel has undergone a mini renovation. The 30 plus year old carpet has been replaced, the draperies cleaned, the pews refreshed and the area behind the screens cleaned out. Please take a moment to stop by the chapel and see your pledge dollars at work.

Camp Alex A Camp for Youth Affected by Someone Dying of Suicide

The Alex Blackwood Foundation for Hope is now accepting camper registration forms for the first annual Camp Alex, a summer camp exclusively for youth who have had someone important to them who died of suicide. Camp Alex provides young survivors of suicide a place where they can be around other kids and adults that really get it, while learning valuable coping skills to use in their everyday lives. This camp is scheduled Sunday, June 30 through Wednesday, July 3 at Ferncliff Camp. Through a partnership with the grief experts at the Center for Good Mourning at Arkansas Children's Hospital, we have created a fun, safe and healing environment for grieving kids ages 11-14. For more information on how to register a child for Camp Alex, please visit www.secondpres.com.

Our church and youth hosted Bike and Build June 12, 13, and 14 in Youth Building

Bike & Build (www.bikeandbuild.org) organizes cross-country bicycle trips which benefit affordable housing groups. The 29 college students who spent 2 nights in the Youth Building will ride 3,542 miles across the country from Nags Head, NC to San Diego, CA!

Along their route, the group will spend every second or third day working for affordable housing groups such as Habitat for Humanity.

Our group worked in North Little Rock with Habitat for Humanity. To thank the church, they donated money to the local chapter of Habitat in honor of the church. Special thanks to the following folks who provided hospitality, food and drinks for our Bike and Build:

And a huge thank you to John Lloyd and Doug Akin for cooking burgers and hot dogs, and to the Senior High Youth and advisors for helping to host a dinner for Bike and Build.
