Page 3: Summer Reading Challenge at the Lansdowne Library List of events

The Lansdowne Public Library offers an eight week Summer Reading Challenge for children through age 18.

The benefits of our summer reading challenge include: Keeping your mind sharp to help avoid the “summer slide.”

Encouraging a habit of reading

It’s fun!

Summer Reading Challenge

Jun 16-Aug 8

Experiment and Explore Early Literacy! It's a summer reading challenge for our youngest library friends!

Each week we will focus on one of the pre-reading skills and explore them

through fun activities. Grab a log each week to keep track of your progress.

At the completion of the program children will earn a prize.

The six skills are Print motivation - or liking books - means children will want to learn

to read.

Phonological awareness - helps children sound out written words.

Vocabulary - helps children recognize written words and under-

stand what they read.

Narrative skills - helps children develop thinking and comprehension

skills.

Print awareness - helps children feel comfortable with books and

understand that print is useful.

Letter knowledge - helps children figure out how to sound

out words.
