Learning with Mrs Powell Last week we studied the text The Day the Crayons Quit. The students have been learning to give opinions in their writing, to understand different character’s point of view, write letters and write imaginative creations about what crayons can do. This week we are studying the text The Day the Crayons Came home. This is a follow on from our Week 4 text The Day the Crayons Quit. For the text this week, students have been understanding characters, write about setting and purpose and we have started using adjectives, feeling words, senses and sizzling starts in our writing. This story links with the themes of colours, destinations, getting along with others and being yourself. This week the Kindy/Year 1 students started “marking” their own writing by completing their success criteria checklist. They are enjoying showing ownership over their learning by seeing how many stamps they can achieve. Keep up the great writing. Last week in Maths we focused on Addition and Subtraction strategies and learnt how to use number lines to help add and take away. This week we learnt Measurement - length (longer/shorter), Mass (heavy/light), Capacity (holds more/holds less/full/empty) and we revised halves and introduced quarters in fractions. The students have started reflecting on their weekly learning, and they are also striving to reach their target of 100 Dojo points. They are currently sitting more than half way with 56 points. AMAZING. Well done to the students for reading their PM readers online, this seems to be working really well for home reading. Keep up the great reading!!! As we have started learning about senses and including them in our writing, in class we are learning the song I can sing a Rainbow in Sign language. The students have picked this up really quickly and we are hoping to be able to perform it for the parents soon. Fingers crossed. What a great 5 weeks of learning we have done this term, let’s keep working hard.

Learning with Miss T Maths - All students are enjoying their Maths lessons and are “blitzing it”! Our focus has been on fractions with Montana, Samuel and Michael adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator. They are also finding a third, quarter or a fifth of a group. I am amazed how quickly they are able to calculate two-thirds or four-fifths of the same group. Noah, Daley, Brooke and Sam are adding, subtracting fractions with the same denominator and exploring mixed numerals and improper fractions. They have also commenced discovering the secrets of multiplying decimals by 10, 100 and even 1000. In subtraction, Montana, Samuel and Michael are subtracting numbers with trading into the tens and hundreds. Montana is mastering subtraction into the thousands, but only with trading into the tens. Brooke and Noah have been undertaking similar subtractions into the thousands, with trading into the hundreds and sometimes thousands. Sam and Daley are subtracting into the hundred thousands and millions with multiple trading. Noah, Brooke, Sam and Daley are also mastering subtractions with multiple zeros. Tristan continues to blitz fractions, decimals and subtractions and additions into the hundred millions. All students are building their tables confidence and mastery. Samuel is working on his 3x, Michael his 3x, 4x, 6x, Montana her 3x, 4x, Brooke her 7x, 8x, Sam and Daley their 8x, 9x, Noah his 8x and Tristan is building his speed accuracy. Well done everyone, you are ACING it!!! Yesterday the students were asked to graph the data they collected after rolling a dice twenty times. After colouring their graph, they were required to enter this data into their computers to create either a bar, column, tally or pie graph. Today we collected more data and used the excel program to create a pie and column graph. Writing - The students ’ writing learning intention is to write sizzling, descriptive sentences and their writing is “one fire!” However, most students have difficulty correctly editing their writing to ensure they have full stops, capital letters and have identified, and corrected, spelling errors. Yesterday we wrote beautiful haiku poems about hippos. We complete a handwriting activity 3 times a week and typing.com lessons twice a week. Creativity - This week we used graphite to draw our slumbering hippos and watercolours to paint the lagoon. I continue to be amazed at the creativity and enthusiasm of my students!!! For the last 2 weeks everyone has been enthralled by Minecraft and have created amazing worlds. I marvel at the degree of conversation, support and respect they show to each other when they are creating. Last week we had a Lego challenge to create a Star Wars craft and Star Wars figure. Upon completion of this task, the students were required to green screen their models and embed a space background. Again I was “blown away” with their efforts and collaboration. Geography - We continue to learn about our closest neighbour New Guinea and the differences between Australia and New Guinea. Child Protection - We are discussing what abuse is and the difference between abuse and accidents. Also, the different types of abuse and how to recognise abuse. We are also discussing private body parts and their correct names. Homework - Homework recommenced last week. Congratulations Samuel and Montana, for completing all your homework! It is expected that each Year 3-6 student completes their nightly homework on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights. My students are required to read nightly to a parent and ask their parent to sign their homework sheet to indicate they have completed their reading homework. Students should learn their spelling words each night by writing their words and spelling their words to a parent. If you need help in this area please contact me.
