SUMMER HORIZONS CAMP AT NPS

Each summer, play and laughter fills the halls and grounds of National Presbyterian School during our annual Summer Horizons Camp program. Our young campers (ages 3 -12) build self-confidence and form friendships while trying new things, investigating the world around them, and sparking their creativity with a range of projects and activities organized around a variety of exciting themes.

Expertly led by talented professional educators and aspiring teachers from NPS and area schools, campers

learn and have fun in a warm and nurturing atmosphere. As during the school year, camp embraces the NPS core values of love, respect, honesty, responsibility, and safety, the building blocks for our positive and inclusive culture. With our steadfast focus on the needs of young children, group sizes are limited, allowing for maximum participation during those fun-filled summer days!

Our summer programming includes several weeks of traditional day camp as well as sports and specialty camps. Optional instructional swimming and early- and after-care programs are offered most weeks. Campers may sign up for one week, a combination of weeks, or the whole summer. Weekly themes are experienced through age-appropriate projects and activities designed specifically for each group. We also tailor Friday fun activities for each age group, including special guests, theme parties, and field trips. Summer Horizons parents enjoy a weekly newsletter, Thursday swim reports, and an invitation to our Friday parent gallery.

We enjoy the use of the air-conditioned and recently renovated classrooms of National Presbyterian School. Access to the School’s gym, all-season field, outdoor play areas, and a variety of Imagination Playground equipment is instrumental in ensuring our campers have space to spread their wings.

Summer Horizons Camp is a special summer community, and I am pleased to welcome you to join us for another memorable experience. So come along with us as we near 50 years of playing, splashing, and learning on our sunny campus.

I CAN BUILD IT (TECH EDITION) JUNE 20-24

Do you love LEGO®, videogames, or robots? Start off camp with a taste of tech as we take a look at tools, simple machines, and computers. Play games centered in the fundamentals of programming language and work with our multiple building and circuit board sets. Peek inside household gadgets and talk about how parts work together to function. Campers will learn about basic tools and machines, play and explore with gears and magnets, and of course have plenty of opportunities to build! This STEAM-centered week will include one Hour of Code event for older campers. On Friday, we’ll have a special visit from the instructors of Einstein by Design, who will lead campers in various Make and Take workshops.

WILD WEST JUNE 27-JULY 1

Explore the folklore and cultural expressions of the American West and indigenous peoples of the Americas. Learn what life was like on the Oregon Trail and try your hand at a variety of old-time crafts and activities. Write and illustrate your own creation myth. Practice country-western folk dances and participate in a friendly camp-wide Gold Rush. On Friday, we’ll get wild with inflatables and a hoedown!

LET’S GET COOKING* JULY 5 - 8

Learn about nutrition and healthy habits as you work on your skills in the kitchen! We’ll make a daily variety of yummy dishes, snacks, and treats while learning basic culinary skills and food preparation safety. Discover measurements and work on reading recipes, then take home a recipe book full of the week’s creations. Outside of the kitchen, try a new movement activity like yoga, relax creatively with Zentangle drawings, or exercise your mind with puzzles and brain teasers. On Friday, we’ll visit the National Arboretum’s Washington Youth Garden to take part in the SPROUT Nutrition program.

Please note: Camp will be closed on July 4. Fees are pro-rated for this week.

All foods served at camp are peanut- and nut-free. Some activities may include other allergens such as gluten and eggs, but some accommodations may be made. All camp staff members are trained in classroom allergy management. Please contact the Camp Director for more information.

MUSIC MAKERS* JULY 11 - 15

Come celebrate music with us during this week of singing, dancing and sound! Make and play your own instrument from recyclables, and learn about the different families of musical instruments. Get funky and work on your rhythm with music-driven games. Discover sound waves and how our ears work to collect and process sound. We’ll wrap up the week with a trip to Imagination Stage, where we’ll see their collaboration with The Washington Ballet: a production of “The Little Mermaid.”

*Where marked, Larks, Robins and Hawks will go on a Friday field trip.

FUTURE ME* JULY 18-22

What will life be like in 5 years? How about 15? Let’s imagine how our world will change by focusing on how science and technology have developed over the past 100 years. Make a blueprint for your own invention and then use teamwork to combine your idea with another to create something really neat! We’ll meet a few special guests who have really fun jobs and set goals for our own unique interests. You can be an innovator and world-changer! On Friday, we’ll head to the National Museum of American History to visit the Spark!Lab and check out exhibitions about our own country’s developments.

PASSPORT ADVENTURES* JULY 25-29

Join us for a week of international exploration as we learn about the culture and geography of many different countries! We’ll make passports and visit each continent to discover how languages, foods, wildlife, clothing and even buildings may differ from the US. Learn about embassies and how they support and promote relations between countries. At the end of the week, we’ll travel to the National Air & Space Museum in Washington, DC to investigate aircrafts used for adventures on Earth and in outer space!

OLYMPIC CHAMPIONS AUGUST 1-5

It’s that time again: Time for the summer Olympics! Learn about the history of this event, and study ancient Greek mythology linked to its origin. We’ll talk about sportsmanship and of course try out a few sports and games for ourselves. Have fun participating in our own week-long Summer Horizons Camp Olympics, or work on Olympics-themed crafts and activities! We’ll end our week with closing ceremonies and a friendship walk at the nearby Glover-Archbold trailhead.

PLANETEERS* AUGUST 8-12

Even little actions can make a difference! Let’s learn about recycling and composting through games and hands-on projects. Find and read recycling labels on objects and decide how they will be sorted or re-purposed. Discover what happens to our trash when we throw it away, and how pollution and litter may impact our environment. We’ll talk about what we can do to protect our planet every day. On Friday, we’ll get a fascinating look at the facility operations at the Montgomery County Recycling Center.

BLUEBIRDS Campers who are entering Pre-K in September 2016 and are at least 4 years old by June 15, 2016

CHICKADEESSmall groups, with lots of tender loving care and encouragement, boost the confidence of these first-time campers in this full- or half-day program. The emphasis is on individual attention and sensitivity to the needs of these special young people. Group activities and projects are interspersed with free play and short rest periods.

Nurturing teachers, ably assisted by enthusiastic and caring camp counselors, guide our youngest campers in age-appropriate activities such as creative movement, science, cooking projects, and water play designed to help them develop their fine and gross motor skills, to think imaginatively, to promote language skills, to share with others, and to build independence.

Chickadees do not participate in field trips or the instructional swimming program.

Please note that children in the Chickadees program must be fully toilet-trained. Because we are not equipped to deal with frequent accidents, no exceptions will be made.

BLUEBIRDS The four-year old Bluebirds enjoy activities in a self-contained full- or half-day program designed especially for their young age. Campers participate in a range of games and activities designed to develop both large and fine motor skills, involving investigation, observation, and sensory discovery. Campers enjoy projects such as science activities, painting, story time, collages, singing, dancing, and group games. Activities may differ from those listed in the theme descriptions but will follow the weekly theme. Each week includes opportunities for outside play, water play, and free choice in the classroom. On Fridays (Camp Spirit Days), staff will provide a series of themed activities to celebrate the end of the week.

Bluebirds are eligible to participate in the optional instructional swimming program off-campus. Those not taking part in swimming remain at camp for AM Adventures.

Typically, Bluebirds do not participate in field trips.
