Summer at The Rye Arts CenterThe Rye Arts Center off ers a schedule of week-long morning, afternoon, and late afternoon classes each week from June 26 - August 25. You can fi ll your child's entire summer with creativity and fun, or simply fi ll the gaps. We would be happy to work with you to best fi t your child’s schedule and interests.

In addition, our popular full-day Musical Theater Weeks are off ered throughout August, private music lessons are available for all ages in a range of musical disciplines, weekly art classes are available for teens and adults, and our free Dance For Parkinson’s Disease Classes are off ered through July.

Young Performers week with Artistree Performing ArtsAges 4 - 6 , 9:00 am -12:00 pm June 26 - 30 July 3 - 7* July 10 - 14 July 17 - 21 July 24 - 28 Bring out the little actor, dancer and musician in your child. This morning program will be based around children’s songs, musicals, and movies. Each child will be given an opportunity to explore singing, creative movement, and acting. An added bonus is a hands-on opportunity in our piano keyboard lab. Please pack a nut free morning snack.

Visual Arts Week: Drawing, Painting & Mixed Media with Katharine DufaultAges 7 - 9, 9:00 am - 12:00 pm June 26 - 30 July 3 - 7* July 10 - 14 July 17 - 21 July 24 - 28 July 31 - Aug. 4 Aug. 7 - 11 Aug. 14 - 18 Aug. 21 - 25 Experimenting with color, texture and composition through drawing, painting, and mixed media projects, students will be encouraged to develop their own approach while exploring a different medium each day (acrylics, pencil, watercolor, charcoal, printmaking and more). Minecraft Maker Week with Gary MackAges 7 - 10, 9:00 am - 12:00 pm June 26 - 30 July 3 - 7* July 10 - 14 July 17 - 21 July 24 - 28 July 31 - Aug. 4 Aug. 7 - 11 Aug. 14 - 18 Aug. 21 - 25 Mr. Mack is here this summer! Join him for a week of Minecraft fun as you create and immerse yourself in the most popular code-based game of all time! In addition to building virtual worlds and interacting with friends, students will also have a chance to create their own characters and objects using PaperCraft and 3D printing. High-touch + high-tech! All supplies included. Combine this week with an afternoon immersion into the Visual Arts for a full day of creative programming!

Making Movies Week with Kathleen McDermottAges 10 - 14, 10:00 - 12:00 pm July 24 - 28 Aug. 7 - 11 In this class students will learn the basics of movie making - from taking footage, to importing and editing clips, to special effects and animation. Projects will include a stop-motion animation short, a music video with “green screen,” effects, and a group project. Students will learn editing techniques such as adding voice-over and narration, adding captions and text, and animating still images. Students will also gain practice working in teams, and in planning projects from start to finish. All supplies included.

Morning Ceramics Week with Terry TaylorAges 8 - 11, 10:00 am - 12:00 pm June 26 - 30 July 3 - 7* July 10 - 14 July 17 - 21 July 24 - 28 July 31 - Aug. 4 Aug. 7 - 11 Aug. 14 - 18 Aug. 21 - 25 In this specialized week-long workshop, students learn to work with clay through hand building and pottery wheel techniques while focusing on independent projects. Students work at their own pace, creating pieces that interest them, while receiving individual attention in a small class environment. Please have students dress appropriately or bring a smock to protect their clothing. Students are invited to attend for multiple weeks.

All supplies included; combine this week with an afternoon immersion into the Visual Arts for a full day of creative programming!

Plein-air Painting and Drawing Week with Lauren KisselAges 11 - 14, 9:00 am - 12:00 pm June 26 - 30 July 3 - 7* July 10 - 14 July 17 - 21 July 24 - 28 July 31 - Aug. 4 Aug. 7 - 11 Aug. 14 - 18 Aug. 21 - 25 Experience the joy of painting outside! Working from nature is a wonderful way to connect with your surroundings while learning composition, form and light. Students will sketch on the grounds of the RAC, then setup their easel to complete their masterpiece. In case of inclement weather, class will take place indoors. Introduction to Voice with Teresa HitchcockAges 5 - 6, 12:30 - 1:30 pm July 31 - Aug. 4 Aug. 7 - 11In this class we will focus on the fundamentals of singing such as breathing, diction and projection. Music will include songs from Broadway and Disney.

Minecraft 3D Printing Week with Conor MacFinnAges 10 & up, 12:30 - 2:30 pm June 26 - 30 July 3 - 7* July 10 - 14 July 17 - 21 July 24 - 28 Minecraft may have started out as just a game, but it has become much more than that! It has turned into a software platform that is used to teach physics and computer science, as well as to create art installations, 3D printed objects and, of course, machinema! In this class, students will learn how to create 3D worlds and objects in Minecraft and export them to 3D software, where they can render 3D movies and objects. They’ll also learn how to design their own Minecraft skin with paint software! No experience necessary, all supplies included.

Robotics Week with Kyle LawlorAges 10 & up, 2:45 - 4:45 pm June 26 - 30 July 24 - 28 This week offers students the opportunity to develop and use engineering tools, materials, methods and skills in an effort to design and build a creative solution to real world problems. Students are given a chance to do what engineers do; turn ideas into working machines by coupling hard work with science, mathematics, and concepts. This program gives students a chance to develop and demonstrate creative engineering skills and talents in a fun and exciting group atmosphere. Please bring a notebook. All other supplies included.

Programming Python Week with Kyle LawlorAges 10 & up, 2:45 - 4:45 pm July 10 - 14 July 17 - 21 In this week-long course, students will learn to get up and running with the Python programming language. Python is the perfect learning tool to begin programming with text. The language is not strict, which allows the students to focus on logic and critical thinking. Also, Python has built-in utilities that aid in writing clean and efficient code. Students will learn to work with Python both in its interactive mode and through the use of scripts. At the end of the course we’ll even get to break some circuits (MWAHAHA!) by using Python. Previous interaction with Scratch sets a great foundation but is not required. All supplies included.

Wearable Tech Week with Kyle LawlorAges 10 & up, 2:45 - 4:45 pm July 3 - 7* July 31 - Aug. 4 In this week-long program, “makers” will use materials such as conductive thread, glue and paints to create wearable works of art! Please visit our website for examples of projects. All supplies included.

Minecraft Animation Week with Conor MacFinnAges 11 & up, 2:45 - 4:45 pm June 26 - 30 July 3 - 7* July 10 - 14 July 17 - 21 July 24 - 28 Using a popular programming language called “Processing”, students will learn how to program drawings, 3D objects, and more within the expansive universe of Minecraft! Focusing on graphic arts, this course will take students into the world of digital animation and beyond, giving a first-hand glimpse into the technology that is behind many of the popular films and animations today. No experience necessary; all supplies included.

App Design using Sketch with Jason MandelAges 12 & up, 2:45 - 4:45 pm Aug. 7 - 11 Aug. 21 - 25 Ever wondered about the “in’s and out’s” of app design? Design is a fluid and dynamic process that is constantly changing. Mass media and communication have only sped up the evolution of the dialogue to new heights, while still rooted in fundamental principles pioneered by the past. Look to the future by learning the techniques of concept development, layout wire-framing, typography and more. Students will also learn the fundamentals of Sketch, a popular tool used by professionals and agencies of all levels for app and web design. Pencil, notebook and flash drives are recommended.

Sound and Media Design using Ableton with Jason MandelAges 12 & up, 2:45 - 4:45 pmJuly 31 - Aug. 4 Aug. 14 - 18 Learn about the fundamentals of composition with time-based media using Ableton. Students will cover basic concepts of music theory, sound design, and signal flow to make their own compositions and instruments in class. Explore methods of composing with field recordings as well as sample-based materials. Ableton is also a powerful tool for media programming. Students are required to bring their own headphones, and flash drives are suggested. All other supplies included.

Dance for parkinson’s disease - freeWednesdays and Fridays1:45 - 3:00 pm, June 28 - July 28The Rye Arts Center is committed to making the arts accessible to those with varying abilities and backgrounds. These specialized classes stimulate mind, body, and emotion in an enjoyable and safe environment. Based on the acclaimed Mark Morris Dance Group/Brooklyn Parkinson Group Dance for PD that started in 2001, these classes offer PD participants the opportunity to learn from professionally trained dancers about stretching and strengthening muscles with an emphasis on enhancing physical awareness and grace through modern, ballet and folk dance forms.

Portrait Painting with Ismael ChecoThursdays, 8 classes beginning June 29Adults/Teens, 2:45 - 4:45 pmJoin renowned artist Ismael Checo as he breaks the code of successful portrait painting. Classically trained from an early age, and apprenticed to one of the world’s finest portrait painters, Ismael Checo instructs his lessons so students of every level will achieve results. Attention is given to composing the painting; color theory explained like never before; and to techniques that achieve a truer likeness of the sitter. Acrylic & Oil Painting with Elizabeth DerderianFridays, 8 classes beginning June 30Adults/Teens, 2:45 - 4:45 pmExplore the characteristics and properties unique to these very versatile media. You will learn as you paint, and have the opportunity to develop and nurture your own style of expression, with an emphasis on drawing, form and color. Different techniques will be presented that achieve varying effects. Please bring a sketch pad, pencil and eraser to the first class, and a supply list will be distributed. Teens and adults welcome. MUSICAL THEATER WORKSHOPAges 8 - 12, 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

In these week-long workshops, students will learn shortened versions of scenes, songs, and simple choreography - all from some of the greatest Broadway and Disney productions. Students will get a chance to experience the world of theater by exploring their talent through acting, singing, and dancing. All students are asked to bring a voice recording device. An informal presentation is held each Friday evening for family. Daily attendance is required in order to make each presentation successful.
