President’s Letter Dear Pine View families,

I’ve learned through trial and error with

making the instruments. The very first guitar I

made, the neck was really bendy, and it couldn’t

stay in tune. But through trial and error of

making different instruments, they’ve definitely

improved. The very first saxophone we made

actually didn’t work that well, because the

balloon started to vibrate at a different

overtone than it normally would have. But we

fixed that, so it didn’t squeak anymore.

This quotation from PVS alumnus Jack Berry, one of the

founders of Pine View’s own The Garbage-Men, in an interview on

NPR, highlights the importance of using what we have available and

never giving up. The Sustainability @ Pine View promotes these ideals

every day. The S@PV Core Team and Student Sustainability Council

applied to be a Florida Dept. of Ed. for the U.S. DOE Green Ribbon

Award in December. We heard back that our application was very

strong and that the State chose Pine View as a nominee for this

prestigious national award! The winners will be announced in

Washington D.C. on Earth Day, Wednesday, April 22, when S@PV is

planning a lunch-time celebration full of fun activities designed to

raise awareness for protecting what we have. PVA’s Environmental

Health and Safety Chair Nicole Jurczyk reminds us that blue and gold

make green!

Now that we’re all back from Spring Break, it’s time to start thinking

about the summer. Look inside to discover dozens of area camps

offering tons of innovative and challenging ways our students can

stretch while on break. Register at www.BiddingforGood.com/pineview

to bid for your favorites during our auction, which runs from April 3–

12. All the money raised will support Pine View School and our

hardworking students. And what a bargain! From our own teachers’

camps and enrichment programs, and from SURFit to Sarasota

Scullers and Venetian Academy of Music to Venice Theater, you’ll find

the best camps around! The auction ends at 6:00 p.m. on the 12th, so

be sure to stay on top of your bid!

Please remember that if you’re receiving this newsletter and are

included in the Student Directory, you are a PVA member. Come out

and vote for our 2015 PVA Board nominees and changes to the by-laws,

and learn about all the great things PVA Committees did for the school

this year. Participate! Our Annual Meeting will be held on Tuesday,

April 7, in the Student Union. Help make PVA self-sustaining by

supporting our programs and voting in a fresh cohort of directors.

See you at Pine View!

Principal’s Perspective

April, 2015 Dear Pine View School Parents and Community:

April is a wonderful time of year, and we have so many exciting activities in all grades! We hope that you are able to celebrate the many achievements of our students during the many awards and culminating events in the coming weeks. Many of these special and traditional PV events would not be possible without the direct support and critical involvement of our amazing Pine View parents- thank you for going the extra degree for our students! PVA will be holding Board elections on April 7th and we thank everyone who supports our students and teachers! The meeting is 7pm in the Student Union and everyone is welcome!

On April 18, Pine View is helping our students, staff, faculty and our community build awareness of healthy choices and our 5-2-1-0 program. At our second annual Python Run website, http://pvpythonrun.com/ you will find information about the first ever Python Run 5K, as well as information on how you can contribute as a sponsor of the race, race course information, and registration details. See you at the race!

On the school website, you will also find information about FSA schedules, Advanced Placement (AP) mock schedules, Advanced Placement (AP) exam schedules, End of Course (EOC) exam schedules and end of year activities. We will soon be celebrating “grad bash” in Orlando at Universal Studios with our seniors and know that we will have a wonderful time. Our students continue to impress me daily, and through their scholarship, their behavior, and their commitment to sharing their gifts with others, Pine View students truly distinguish themselves.

In addition to keeping information updated on the website, we will be updating the look and utility of the PV website very soon! It will have a new look and feel, and still be personalized to emulate our mission of providing a qualitatively different learning environment for our students. Please stay tuned and check our website for updates!

We are pleased that so many of you have taken advantage of our Remind.com service- registration is easy! It’s free, and very easy to use. All you need to do is send a text message to 81010 with @pineviewsc in the message field. You will immediately receive a confirmation reply. It may also ask you to enter your name so that I know who is registering, but it is not necessary (or feel free to reply).

In addition to myriad academic achievements across all curricula, our students and teachers are continuing the tradition of excellence at Pine View and consistently going 212- winning the Sarasota County Schools’ Academic Olympic tournament, an impressive showing at the Gulf Coast Community Foundation-sponsored STEM summit with our VEX Robotics team, our first ever Elementary STEAM night and Lego movie celebration, and talented musicians performing our annual “Jazz Under the Stars!” It is an honor and privilege to serve our amazing students, teachers, and community, and we wish everyone an outstanding spring!

Stephen P. Covert, Ph.D. Principal

“The test of the artist does not lie in the will with which he goes to work, but in the excellence of the work he produces.”

--Thomas Aquinas

About PVA ( Pine View’s Organization of

Parents, Teachers, Staff and Supporters Pine View Association (PVA) works to enhance and enrich the educational experiences of

our students -- by supporting our school’s academic, social, fine arts, and technology objectives. PVA coordinates volunteers, raises funds, promotes communication between Pine View and our families, provides input to the school on issues of concern to our parents, and supports gifted advocacy on a local, state and national level. This is only possible with the help and dedication of our parent and community volunteers and donors, business partners, and staff. We do this because we want our bright and talented students at Pine View, our children whose futures are so abundant with possibility, to have every opportunity they deserve, every opportunity we can provide to them.

EOC & LEOC Testing Schedule

Teachers have the option of administering Term Final exams. However, all teachers

in the same course must be consistent in scheduling or not scheduling exams.

Teachers must clearly communicate to parents and students how Term Finals will be factored into their semester grades (EOCs factored into their final grade). All teachers teaching the same course must be consistent with the Term Final % weight.

The regular schedule of classes will be followed with the exception of those students taking an EOC.

Other than studying for Term Finals, no homework may be assigned May 21-May 28. For students with semester courses, no homework may be assigned May 21. This includes long-term projects and studying for a daily quiz or test. All long-term projects should be due the week of May 18.

All semester courses must schedule their exams on the assigned day, May 22. Students with multiple courses in a particular discipline should make arrangements with teachers about the scheduling of those exams.

World Language Department reserves the right to interchange the “listening” and the “written” portion of their exam during the two assigned dates.

Students with multiple World Languages should coordinate with their World Language teacher to schedule their exam during May 22 or May 28.

Humanities includes art, music, PE, and technology courses.

2015 Earth Day at Pine View is

Almost Here! April 22, 2015

The Sustainability @ Pine View Core Team planning for our third-annual Earth Day at Pine View celebration is well underway. This year promises to be another exciting celebration where students come out to the Pine View Quad to have fun and learn about ways to protect our environment and live sustainably. The celebration is held during the three lunch periods on Wednesday, April 22nd…the same day that Earth Day events and festivities are held around the globe.

We invite students to come out during their lunch periods and participate at the activity tables, learn about the sustainability projects at PV, and see the sustainability art work that fellow students have been creating. You can find out more about S@PV on the Pine View web-site. The Sustainability@Pine View link is under the “Academics” tab on the front page. For a better idea about what our event is like, watch the great YouTube video that was professionally produced after the 2013 Earth Day celebration. You can search YouTube for “Pine View School Earth Day” or navigate there through the S@PV web-site.

We can’t wait to see you at our Earth Day at Pine View celebration!

PV Pride

Pine View Pride rewards our Pine View Honor students for their hard work and dedication to obtaining good grades. PV Pride was held on November 21, 2014 and February 13, 2015 for the first and second quarters, respectively. Over 2,300 awards were distributed for the first two grading periods to approximately 80% of those students eligible to receive an award.

For the first two PV Pride events this school year, high school student awards have included breakfast (Dunkin’ Donuts Valentine’s specialties were a wonderful treat), lunch (PDQ’s hot catered meals were a huge hit), AMC movie passes and Starbucks gift cards. Middle school student awards have included lunch, Keva Juice smoothies, and customized Pine View gifts (frisbees, bottle chillers, baseball caps, foam footballs and backpacks). Elementary school selections have included Keva Juice smoothies, Whole Foods frozen fruit bars and the customized Pine View gifts.

We would like to thank: PDQ, Dunkin’ Donuts, Whole Foods, Keva Juice, Einstein Bros., Jersey Mikes, Geckos and Applebees for their generosity and donations this year; PVA for funding our awards; all of our parent volunteers for helping us distribute awards on PV Pride Day; Rachel North Zipay for administering Sign-Up Genius to help us recruit volunteers; Lisa Matthews, who passed us the baton this year, but is still very much involved; and finally, Pine View administration for your help and support, with special thanks to Gena Bufkin for compiling our student lists each

quarter and Pauline Sarkozy for setting up all of our tables, signage, etc. We couldn’t pull off these successful events without you all!

Page 41

PV Pride for the third quarter will be held on Friday, April 24, 2015. We are always in need of parent volunteers. It’s a fun and rewarding day for students and volunteers alike, so please contact us if you are able to help in any way for any amount of time or are willing to donate goods or services.

Choir News from Seth Gardner

Thursday, April 30, 2015 Spring Choral Concert PV Auditorium 7:00pm

Mr. G’s Podium:

I am so excited to announce that all of the Pine View Choirs did very well at the Florida Vocal Association’s Music Performance Assessment at North Port High School. The students were adjudicated by three judges in performance and one judge in sight-reading (SR). If a choir received a “Superior” from a judge, it is like getting a “5” on FSA (FCAT) and an “Excellent” is like getting a “4”. If a group gets three or four “Superiors”, the overall rating is “Superior”.

I am really excited to announce that the Pine View Middle School Choir received a “Superior” rating from every judge! I am over the moon! This the first time a MS Choir has participated in MPA from Pine View!

Here are the results:

HS Combined Chorus (Vocal & Ensemble & High School Chorus) = Excellent

Judge 1= Superior Judge 2 = Excellent

Judge 3 = Excellent SR Judge = Superior Vocal Ensemble =

Excellent (SO CLOSE!) Judge 1 = Superior Judge 2 = Excellent Judge 3 = Excellent SR Judge = Excellent HS Chorus = Excellent Judge 1= Excellent Judge 2 = Excellent Judge 3 = Excellent SR Judge = Superior MS Chorus = SUPERIOR Judge 1 = Superior Judge 2 = Superior Judge 3 = Superior SR Judge = Superior I want to thank the parents for

all of their support. We had many awesome chaperones! I want to thank the Pine View Staff for their flexibility this week, allowing students to make up tests and attend combined rehearsals. The administration here at Pine View is amazing and I have felt nothing but support from the moment I stepped on this campus. Finally, all of this is impossible without the incredibly talent students I “GET” to teach every single day.

Student Art Display Case

Kaya Vagts grade 4 (written by Kaya)

I started to work on art when I was very young. My artwork started out as very abstract items that make no sense to me right now. Now, I enjoy drawing fairies, animals and people. Now my art is more understandable and convincing than before. When I was young, art was just something that I did. Recently I was inspired by books and things I found online. I also like using a mixture of fine tip markers and colored pencils.

Hailey Balzan grade 4 (written by Hailey)

I have always loved to draw even before I was in preschool. My cousin, Amanda, is a professional artist. She gave me some tips and tricks on drawing. I really enjoy drawing in my free time. I attend an art camp every summer. Whenever I free draw it’s usually animals, especially dogs and cats. I hope you like my drawings!

Giovanni Brunetti grade 4

Giovanni has enjoyed drawing since he was very little. He has learned a lot about drawing from his father who is also an artist. Giovanni prefers to draw animals and mythical creatures using pencil. Giovanni and his dad watch for animals in nature, take photos and use those to draw from. The animals featured here were all seen in his yard with the exception of the owl which was a sculpture.

Madison Zoernack grade 4

Madison started drawing when she was only 4 years old. Her older brother taught her a tracing technique, but she has always preferred creating her own drawings. Madison usually uses only a pencil, but sometimes adds color with colored pencils.

Literacy Tips by Pine View Literacy Team

It is commonly understood that the more children read, the better readers they become. The more enjoyable the reading, the more they will stick with it. Parents and teachers can help support a child’s literacy by providing a variety of reading material. One excellent source of quick and entertaining reading is a magazine. Sometimes kids just want something they can read quickly to keep them occupied and entertained for a brief period of time – magazines will do the trick. Below are several lists of magazines for various age groups and interests.

These magazines are designed for the child in the pre-literacy or early literacy stage (ages 3-6). They contain stories, poems, and riddles designed to be read aloud. This helps foster a love of learning in the young child.

Ladybug (short stories and poems) Click (science, art, nature and environmental issues) The following magazines are well suited for the young independent readers (ages 6-9). The length

and topics of the stories are perfect for supporting independent reading and maintaining an interest in reading.

Ask (science, history, inventors, and artists) Spider (stories, poems, activities along with illustrations by famous children’s artists) Appleseeds (cultural and historical topics) Highlights (a wide variety of literature to appeal to all interests) Ranger Rick (animals and nature) This list provides magazines that are perfect for the pre-teen to young teen age group (ages 9-13).

These magazines provide wonderful articles about topics that are of interest to this age group. MUSE (science and art articles peppered with edgy jokes) Cricket (high quality fiction and non-fiction stories with humorous commentary with each story) DIG (the magazine gets its title from “dig sites”, read articles about history and archaeology) FACES (learn about people, places and culture around the world) Odyssey (explore science and how it relates to our everyday life) Cobblestone (interesting articles on American hist ory) Creative Kids (stories, games and puzzles written by kids for kids) National Geographic World (natural history, science, and outdoor interests) Owl: The Discovery Magazine for Kids (science, nature, and technology) Skipping Stones (multicultural stories) Sports Illustrated for Kids (articles about professional and amateur sports) Stone Soup (poems, stories and expository pieces written by kids) Time for Kids (weekly news magazine featuring current events around the world) US Kids (historical stories presenting in an appealing manner for this age group) The following list provides magazines that are geared to the teenage group (ages 13+). These

magazines tend to focus on specific topics of interest such as sports, fashion, electronics, or current events in the news.
