The end of another school year is in sight, and kids are chomping at the bit! Parents, on the other hand,

may feel differently. For families with two parents who work outside the home, find-ing supervision for kids during the sum-mer months can be a challenge. Finding a camp that meets your child’s needs and caters to her interests is one great solution. Not only do camps solve the summer childcare dilemma, they also help prevent summer boredom and provide a unique opportunity for kids to gain experience in an area that interests them. Whether a summer-long day camp, short-term in-terest-specific camp, or even an overnight camp is up your family’s alley, you can most certainly find what you’re looking for in northern Colorado. Read on to find out more about camp options in our area, including some you might never have con-sidered before, and be sure to register soon, as camps fill quickly!

SPORTS CAMPSAmong the most popular camps each year are those with a sports theme. For good reason too, as sports camps increase phys-ical and mental well-being in the form of exercise, teamwork, sportsmanship and strategy. Another reason these camps tend to be so in-demand is the huge variety that is offered. For example, local universities CSU and UNC offer several sports-based youth camps, such as baseball, basketball, volleyball, lacrosse, soccer, and tennis. The Edge Sports Center in Fort Collins offers camps for a handful of traditional sports as well, including basketball, baseball, and volleyball. For the ballerina in your life, The Studio offers summer dance camps for ages 3 and up, at its Fort Collins and Loveland locations. And 9- to 14-year-old aspiring golfers will have a unique opportunity this year to participate in a 4-day Nike Golf Camp sponsored by US Sports at Peli-can Lakes in Windsor. There are literally dozens of paths you can take with a camp specializing in sports instruction.

ART AND MUSIC CAMPSKids of all ages can let their creativity flow at art, music, or theater camp. In Fort Collins, Flying Colors Art School offers half-day and full-day “yoga and art” camps for ages 5 to 12. Children will spend time at local parks, creating artwork and learn-ing about the history of art, while taking breaks for yoga sets! Have an aspiring potter at home? At an Artisan You camp in Loveland, kids can create fairy gardens and other fun projects with their own per-sonal touches. Camps last a few hours and span multiple days.

Music theater camp, offered at Up in Lights in Loveland, is the perfect fit for the child interested in music and

acting. At these camps, available to ages 6 to 18, kids will spend 2.5 weeks working on a specific performance, which they will perform on stage at the end of camp. This summer’s plays include Annie for 6- to 9-year-olds, The Wizard of Oz for 10- to 13-year-olds, and Les Miserables for 14- to 18-year-olds. Classes fill quickly and some may already be on wait lists, so call soon to reserve your spot.

EDUCATIONAL/SPECIAL-INTEREST CAMPSIf your child has already developed a strong interest in a particular subject, you might be surprised to find a camp geared just for him. For example, young Lego enthusiasts can build the summer away at a Play Well Lego Camp, held at the Chilson Recre-ation Center in Loveland. These camps, held throughout the summer for 5- to 12-year-olds, feature daily projects based on themes such as Star Wars, space, Minecraft, and robots. Kids will learn engineering principals and terminology while exploring

their creativity with the blocks they love! For the animal lover, consider Larimer

Humane Society’s Critter Camp, which offers kids ages 8 to 13 hands-on experi-ence with animals. Or, if your child is more interested in large animals, you might con-sider Gargot Farms Pony Camp, located in Berthoud. During this week long camp, 6- to 14-year-olds will experience everything involved with caring for horses, from horse anatomy to grooming and riding!

What better way to spend the sum-mer than out in nature at a CSU Environ-mental Learning Center camp? These all-day camps are each a week long, and in-clude field trips to various outdoor sights, with themes such as “Unsolved Mysteries at the ELC,” “Naturally High Tech,” and “Aquatic Antics.” Kids who love to explore and discover might also enjoy a camp at Fort Collins Museum of Discovery, where kids of all ages can learn about everything from astronomy to zombies and families have their choice of half-day, full-day, and weeklong programs.

RELIGIOUS CAMPSThis year, Camp Timberline will host camp at it’s location 9 miles south of Estes Park for kids entering 1st through 6th grade. The camp’s focus is sports and adventure with a Christian foundation. Kids will learn the importance of posi-tive attitudes and practice good sports-manship while participating in sports of their interest and age-based adventures. Time will be set aside each day to share Gospel messages and have Bible-based discussions. Summer camp and day

camp options are available.• Camp Timberline

DAY CAMPSCamps that offer full-day childcare while providing an array of exciting summer activities are perfect for families with working parents and active kids! Love-land Sports and Academic Day Camp offers half-day, full-day, and extended hours and requires 2-week minimum commitments throughout summer. The camp is designed to allow kids to try out a variety of sports combined with math and reading practice. At Adventure Bound Day Camp, located at Loveland’s Chilson Recreation Center, kids will be busy with crafts, games and songs, as well as weekly field trips to local destinations including The Denver Mint, Mulberry Pool, and even a Rockies game! Camp is available in 2-day, 3-day, 4-day and 5-day/week intervals.

In Fort Collins, Mountain Kids Day Camp offers an on-site pool for swimming lessons, and activities such as gymnastics, crafts, and local field trips. Full- and half-day options are available, and children must be registered for a minimum of four weeks. Also in Fort Collins, GKGymnastics offers a sum-mer day camp focused on teaching kids gymnastics skills such as trampoline, con-ditioning, and fitness challenges. Roller- skating, bowling, zoo and IMAX field trips will also be part of your child’s week.

SPECIAL NEEDS CAMPSFor children with special needs, a camp tai-lored to their interests and abilities can be a great confidence builder and a way to build

lasting friendships. In Loveland, Hearts and Horses Therapeutic Riding Center offers summer camps for children ages 6 to 13 with any level of riding experience. Each camp runs Monday through Thursday from 9am-3pm. At camp, children will learn the importance of compassion and respect, and will be encouraged to celebrate their differences. Camp Wapiyapi in Estes Park offers a free summer camp for children affected by cancer and their families. The two summer sessions will provide campers with plenty to smile about, as they engage in outdoor adventures and have the chance to just be kids!

OVERNIGHT CAMPSIf you think your child might be ready for a residential, overnight camp, you might consider Cheley Colorado Camp in Estes Park. The camp, which has been around for almost 100 years, has hosted thousands of kids from every state in its long history. Summer camp is 27 days long and is open to kids ages 9 to 17. During their stay, kids will engage in horseback riding, hiking, fishing, cookouts, crafts, skits, campfire games, and more. They will also build character and learn valuable lessons in re-sponsibility and independence, as they are expected to keep their cabins clean and tidy, and to help with every aspect of camp life. Cheley camp offers campers the opportu-nity to select daily activities and programs that fit their interests, challenge themselves, and learn to work in teams to accomplish goals. Parents and campers are encouraged to keep in touch throughout the camp season, and interested families are welcome to schedule a visit to the camp before reg-istering.

Alert the camp director of any special needs your child has and ask how they may accom-modate your camper.

If your child will be biking at camp, make sure her bike is in good working order with reflectors on the front, back and sides. Children should wear close-toed shoes and a helmet, every time.

Ensure your child wears a life vest when partici-pating in water sports.

Teach children to obey traffic rules. As a gen-eral guidelines, no child under the age of 10 should cross the street alone.

Remind children to wear their seatbelt when traveling in any vehicle; be sure to bring a car seat/booster seat and require that your child be properly restrained when in a car/van.

Send children with proper footwear (water shoes, closed toed shoes, hiking boots) for the various activities they will be doing.

Apply sunscreen rated SPF 30 or higher to your child’s exposed skin 15 to 30 minutes before going out, and send a bottle of sunscreen with your child so that she can reapply frequently. Send a refillable water bottle with your child and encourage him to fill it several times a day in order to stay hydrated. Active supervision by counselors, using proper protective gear every time and other simple prevention steps will help children avoid danger this summer while attending camp.

For more safety tips, visit www.sklarimer.org.

Safety tips for campHere are additional tips for parents so that safety stays top of mind:

Summer means fun in the sun, wa-ter recreation and for many, sum-mer camp! “The warmer months

of May through September are when most accidental injuries happen wheth-er playing at home, riding in a vehicle or enjoying summer camp. Parents should be well informed about how the camp they choose makes for a safe, healthy environment for kids,” says Dr. Peyton Taliaferro, Safe Kids member and Loveland based family physician.

Safe Kids offers the following tips to help parents make the best, safest choice for their child when it comes to summertime activities at camp.

First, decide what kind of camp your child would enjoy including day camps, specialty camps, and sleepover camps. If your child has special needs or does best with extra time to acclimate to a new environment, start your research early to find the best camp to suit his needs and interests.

Next, contact the camps of your choice and ask some key questions:

• What does a typical day look like?• What kind of foods (meals and snacks)

do they provide? Can they accom-modate your child’s special dietary needs?

• What is the camp counselor-to-child ratio? This is especially important for any water activities.

• What type of training or certification requirements does the camp have for its staff (including CPR/First aid training)? Does the camp require a thorough criminal/background check for all staff?

• What kind of safety gear is provided with various activities or should you pack your own? (i.e. helmets, life jack-ets, etc.)

• Will children be transported at any time during camp and if so, how? If not via school bus, then parents should provide a car seat/booster seat.

• How is medication administered? Do they have a camp nurse on site?

• What is the camp’s discipline policy?• Is the summer camp ACA (American

Camp Association) accredited?ACA Accreditation ensures that

the camp has had a regular, indepen-dent safety audit that goes beyond regulations in most states. ACA accreditation is the best evidence par-ents have of a camp’s commitment to

a safe environment for their children. Parents should ask for a list of

references – sometimes it can be helpful to talk with other families who have participated in the camp.

It is designed for boys and girls in the “Under 9 & Under 10” age group.
