A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles. Those who had been baptized devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. Awe came upon everyone, because many wonders and signs were being done by the apostles. All who believed were together and had all things in common; they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all, as any had need. Day by day, as they spent much time together in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having the goodwill of all the people. And day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.

Reader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

The Psalter: Psalm 23 – KING JAMES VERSION - Said by ALL – Remaining SEATED

1 The LORD is my shepherd; * I shall not want. 2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures; * he leadeth me beside the still waters. 3 He restoreth my soul; * he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his Name’s sake. 4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; * for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me. 5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies; * thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, * and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

The Epistle: I Saint Peter 2:19-25

A Reading from the First Letter of Saint Peter. It is a credit to you if, being aware of God, you endure pain while suffering unjustly. If you endure when you are beaten for doing wrong, what credit is that? But if you endure when you do right and suffer for it, you have God's

approval. For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you should follow in his steps. “He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth.” When he was abused, he did not return abuse; when he suffered, he did not threaten; but he entrusted himself to the one who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that, free from sins, we might live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed. For you were going astray like sheep, but now you have returned to the shepherd and guardian of your souls.

Reader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

SEQUENCE HYMN 708, “Savior, like a shepherd lead us” Sicilian Mariners

[ Hymns are printed on the final pages of this Service Leaflet. ]

The Holy Gospel: Saint John 10:1-10

The Congregation remains standing and faces the Deacon or Priest, who reads the Gospel.

Gospeller: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint John.

The People sing: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Tune of Hymn 205: Gelobt sei Gott

esus said, “Very truly, I tell you, anyone who does not enter the sheepfold by the gate but climbs in by another way is a thief and a bandit. The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The

gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. They will not follow a stranger, but they will run from him because they do not know the voice of strangers.” Jesus used this figure of speech with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them. So again Jesus said to them, “Very truly, I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and bandits; but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the gate. Whoever enters by me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find

pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.”

Gospeller: The Gospel of the Lord. The People sing: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Tune of Hymn 205: Gelobt sei Gott

The Sermon: The Reverend Kirk E. DeVore, Deacon The Nicene Creed

All now stand and join the Celebrant in saying

We believe in one God,the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth,of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,eternally begotten of the Father,God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,begotten, not made,of one Being with the Father.Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation

he came down from heaven:by the power of the Holy Spirit

he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose againin accordance with the Scriptures;he ascended into heavenand is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,5

who proceeds from the Father and the Son.With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy Catholic and Apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE – Form IV --------------- Prayer Book, Pages 388-389[ Please respond as indicated, after each petition. ]

Leader: Lord, in your mercy . . . People: Hear our prayer.

When all the Prayers have been completed, the Celebrant concludes with this Collect:

We thank you, heavenly Father, that you have delivered us from the dominion of sin and death and brought us into the kingdom of your Son; and we pray that, as by his death he has recalled us to new life, so by his

love he may raise us to eternal joys; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

The Confession of Sin and The Absolution

Celebrant or Deacon: Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

The People kneel, as able. A moment of silence may be kept. Then, all pray together

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against youin thought, word, and deed,

by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart;we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us;that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways,

to the glory of your Name. Amen.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING – Form A

All standing, the Celebrant begins

Celebrant: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

Celebrant: Lift up your hearts.

People: We lift them to the Lord.

Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People: It is right to give him thanks and praise.

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. But chiefly are we bound to praise you for the glorious resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; for he is the true Paschal Lamb, who was sacrificed for us, and has taken away the sin of the world. By his death he has

destroyed death, and by his rising to life again he has won for us everlasting life. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who forever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

SANCTUS – “Holy, holy, holy Lord” – Hymnal S-129 Settting: Robert PowellThe Celebrant and People sing:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

The People kneel (as able) and the Celebrant continues

oly and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to

live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.

HOn the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

The Celebrant and People sing: Setting: Joseph E. Wise

Christ has died. Alleluia! Christ is risen. Alleluia!Christ will come again. Alleluia! Alleluia!

The Celebrant continues8

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts.

Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with the ever-Blessed Virgin Mary, Saint Thomas, Saint Mark, Saint Andrew, Saint John, Saint Peter, Saint Patrick and all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom.

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory are yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever.

PARISH NEWS for The FOURTH SUNDAY of EASTER – May 3, 2020

AS EASTER SEASON CONTINUES TODAY is “Good Shepherd Sunday”, the nickname traditionally given to The Fourth Sunday of Easter. On this day, we celebrate the image of our

16

Lord as our “Good Shepherd”, as He Himself proclaims in chapter 10 of John’s Gospel and as the Old Testament celebrates in the beloved 23rd Psalm. This is one of Scripture’s greatest themes and long a favorite of artists. Here in historic St. Thomas’ we are fortunate to have our own “Good Shepherd Window”, the beautiful one nearest the pulpit. Note the many references to the Good Shepherd in today’s Scriptures, Sermon and Hymns, and enjoy this special Sunday! Though our worship continues to be online, we greet and welcome you in the Name of the Risen Christ! To our parishioners, we love you and miss you so much and look forward to the great day when we can all worship together again! To those joining us online, we are very happy to have you with us, we pray for you, and if you are in the Hancock area, we invite you to join us in person when the crisis passes. To those beyond the local area, our livestreaming will continue after the pandemic passes, and we are always glad to have you join us through the internet. God’s blessings!

A HEARTFELT THANK YOU TO EVERYONE who is helping us to offer online worship during this corona virus crisis. We are especially grateful to Minister of Music Gwynne Cavey and our few Choristers, who are here and socially distanced from one another. Your beautiful music adds so very much to our services. Thank you also to Office Assistant Pam Mann for working with Fr. Allan to produce this Service Leaflet and to place it online at stthomashancock.org. Special thanks to The Rev’d Anne Weatherholt and Deacon Kirk DeVore for their part in bringing us these online services.

NEXT SUNDAY IS MOTHER’S DAY and, even with the pandemic, we will have special flowers and small gifts for all of the women in our congregation. Please plan to drive by the Church between 11:30 A.M. and 12:Noon next Sunday to pick up yours! Enter the Cemetery on Baptist Road and drive through to the front of the Church on High Street. We will have people out front (wearing masks!), distributing your gifts and wishing you a Happy Mother’s Day!

BRIEFLY – During this time we encourage you to make a small Altar in your home! All you need is a small table or TV tray, a cloth covering, a Bible, a Prayer Book, and, if you have them, a cross and candle. This is especially great for children. Be creative and try it! . . . Daniel Weatherholt & The Rev’d Elizabeth Sipos continue to offer a Hymn Sing & Compline online each Wednesday evening at 7:P.M. Why not join in? . . . Rev’d Anne now serves Trinity, Martinsburg, but, since they pre-record their online services, she is able to be here with us during this time.
