What you need to know about us:

• We care deeply about the success and well-being of your sons and daughters.

• We are present on campus and on-call 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.

• We expect our students to know their faculty and staff members.

• We are a community that has high but reasonable expectations for your daughters and sons both inside and outside of the classroom.

• Encourage your students to get to know them.

• Set some ground rules ahead of time for staying in touch with your student – but we recommend you enjoy your independence from them!

• Get in touch with us when you are certain your son or daughter is facing an extreme, atypical challenge faced by an 18-year-old college student, but let your student handle the routine problems of day to day life.

• And get in touch with the appropriate person for the issue – not the president! If you are not sure who the appropriate person is, the Dean of Students is the default contact person.

When children aren’t given the space to struggle through

things on their own, they don’t learn to problem solve

very well. They don’t learn to be confident in their own

abilities, and it can affect their self-esteem.

listen thoughtfully, ask some questions based on your own

sense of the situation, then say,

“OK. So how do you think you’re going to handle that?”
