Rising First Graders

You’ve learned so much in school this year! It is important that you keep your brain active over the summer to be ready for next year. In this packet, you will find a calendar of activities to last you all summer long. This year, we have also incorporated a Summer Project for the final two weeks of summer vacation. Once you have completed an activity, have a family member initial in the box on the calendar. Create a journal that you can use to note your thoughts, ideas, and any work you complete. Be sure to enter the date in your journal for each assignment you do. Directions:

Ø Families should preview the calendar together. There are some activities that may require advanced planning, or you may want to consider working together with other families and friends on some activities.

Ø Students should read for at least 30 minutes each day. v Students will need a Reader’s and Writer’s Journal to complete the summer work. Your journal will be your

special place for the daily calendar work and writing. They can purchase one, or they can make a journal by stapling several pieces of paper together, or by using a notebook/binder with paper. Students should be creative and decorate the journal. Specific journaling tasks are given some days, but students may also journal after each day’s reading, noting things that stood out, questions that they have, or general wonderings about the text.

Ø Each journal entry should: v Have the date and assignment title. v Have a clear and complete answer that explains the student’s thinking and fully supports the response. v Be neat and organized.

Ø Use the chart on the last page of this packet to record all of the books read during summer vacation.

Don’t forget to bring your Reader’s and Writer’s Journal and Summer Project with you on the first day of school. Your new teachers will be so proud of your summer adventure!

21 Who is your favorite hero? Write about him or her in your journal.

22 Make a word journal to put the new words you’ll learn this summer.

23 Rhyming words have the same ending sound (For example. go-no). Make a list of rhyming words and add them to your word journal. Can you think of words that will rhyme with looks, ten, hats, man?

25 Pay a visit to your local public library and apply for a library card. Also, pick up a copy of the Summer Reading List and check out a recommended book.

26 Sight Word Fluency: Do you know the following words: come, today, went, saw, because, this, she, he, is, or with? Write these words on index cards. Practice reading them quickly.

27 How would you help the character in the story? Write a sentence and illustrate what you would do.

28 Practice forming your letters correctly. Aa Bb Cc Dd Ee Ff Gg Hh Ii Jj

29 Think about your summer vacation. How would you describe it? Did you learn any interesting words? List them in your word journal.

1 Visit www.pbskids.org/lions for activities, games, stories, and parent resources.

2 Read any book from the Max Spaniel series by David Catrow or any other book from your recommended reading list.

3 Listen to an audio book in the car today.

4 Think about the book you read. What did you already know? What new information did you learn? What questions do you still have?

5 Write about the book that you are currently reading. If you are reading a story, make a prediction about what will happen next?

6 Use the following words in a sentence. Write using letter sounds. Discuss beginning and ending sounds.

9 Read Honey, I Love by Eloise Greenfield or another book of poetry.

10 Read a poem out loud. First read it slowly in parts with a family member and then read it again. Can you read it on your own?

11 Read another poem. As you read, visualize by making pictures in your mind of what is happening. What do you see?

12 Write your own poem. Illustrate your poem. Share it with a friend or family member.

13 Poems often relate to our five senses: sight, hearing, taste, touch, and smell. Review the poems that you read. Find words that relate to at least three of your senses. Here is an example:

14 Find three interesting words in a magazine or newspaper. Highlight, circle, or cut and paste the words in your journal. Talk about the words. Write a sentence using the words in your journal.

Read Sid and Sam by Nola Buck or another book on the recommended book list.

17 Reread the silly story. Take turns reading it aloud with a family member. Listen to how your family member uses expressions while reading. Practice!

18 Did you read a silly story? What did the characters do that made this story seem silly?

19 Create your own silly story. A duck riding a bike is silly. What other silly things can you think of an animal doing? Use your imagination. Draw a picture of the characters in your story.

20 Use the following words in a sentence. Write using letter sounds.

21 Play “I Spy.” Name a beginning or ending sound and take turns identifying objects that begin or end with that sound.

24 More Sight Word Fluency: Do you know the following words: like, have, said, my, it, will, are, on, was, or come? Write these words on index cards. Practice reading them quickly. Review your earlier words, too!

25 Would you recommend the book you read from the summer reading list to a friend? What did the author do to make this book interesting?

26 In your journal, make a list of topics that you are interested in learning more about. Share your list with your family. Find books on these topics when you visit the library.

27 Play the secret word with a family member. Use these words: fishing, swimming, camp, and family. Start with the first word and give clues about the meaning of words and see if your partner can guess the word. Example: I have lots of sand. People like to swim. People make castles. What am I? Answer: The beach!

28 Write all the words you can make with these words.

29 Visit www.pbskids.org/lions for activities, games, stories, and parent resources.

30 Check out a Meet My Neighbor by Marc Crabtree. Be sure it is a book about a job that you want to know more about.

31 Read your favorite part of the library book to a member of your family, but this time read it like a news reporter on television.

1 Ask your mom or dad to choose a comic strip from the newspaper, then ask them to cut it up. Put the comic strip back together in the right order, and explain it to him or her.

2 Write a thank you note to the librarian at your library for helping you all summer long!

3 Are you ready to go back to school? Do you have your Back to School supply list? What materials do you think you will need? Illustrate and label your supplies in your journal.

4 Play Sight Word Hopscotch! Write your ten words from Sunday on paper or the ground. When you land on the word, read it aloud.

5 Visit http://www.roythezebra.com/ for interactive reading games, guided reading stories, and other activities.

6 National Dog Day is coming up later this month! Read Dogs! Dogs! by Ginger Fogelsong Guy or another book about pets.

7 Listen to an audio book in the car today.

8 What new information did you learn from your reading? What questions do you still have?

Directions: Keep your reading and writing skills sharp for next year by completing these activities. You will need two journals. One journal will be for writing and the another journal will be for Word Work. The following activities are to be completed with parents’ help:

August 14 * This is a family project, so be sure to ask your parents to help you. Today you will begin your summer project. Your project is to make a “Meet My Neighbor” poster. The poster will be about the jobs that Marc Crabtree talks about in the Meet My Neighbor books that you got from the library. Just like this picture, your poster will tell the name of the job that the book you selected explains.

August 15 Ask an older sister or brother to help you while you read your Meet My Neighbor book. Read it three times with their help, and then practice reading it by yourself.

August 16 Today, you read your book to your sister or brother. They will be happy to see how well you can read. When you finish reading, ask them to help you answer these important questions and write the answers in your journal.

Tools are the things a person uses to do their job. If your poster were about a baker, then the tools they use would be a spoon, bowl, apron, and an oven.

August 17 Ask an adult to help you search the internet to find out more about your neighbor’s job. Write your new facts in your journal.

Draw a picture of your neighbor and his job. If they wear a uniform, be sure to draw them wearing it. A uniform is the special clothing that a person puts on to do their job. Remember to add the tools that you wrote about in your journal yesterday, and their names.

August 18 In your journal complete the following sentences: • This poster describes the job

of ____________. • If you are a ________, that

• Add these sentences to your poster.

August 19 Plan a premiere night! Invite family members and friends over to share your summer project. They will be proud of your work!
