Message From our Executive DirectorHello Friends!

We have been very busy throughout the start of 2015! We are excited to announce the re-opening of the Arizona Bleeding Disorders Health and Wellness Center (ABDC) to provide primary care to any and all adults. We started the clinic to provide family-based medical care that can treat the whole person. Adults with bleeding disorders are fortunately living longer, but are now facing the other complications that happen as we age. Our medical providers understand the chronic disorder process, the unique needs of our community and how to manage the complications that can arise as we age with a bleeding disorder.

The best part is that ALL revenue made will go back to support the clinic and our bleeding disorder community. So tell your friends, neighbors and family to use our clinic and help us support you! The clinic is across the street from the Arizona Hemophilia Association, to make it convenient and community focused. Stop by and check it out! Call 602-680-7722 today to schedule an appointment.

In the newsletter you will see several ways to get involved in the Arizona Hemophilia Association. You can attend our many programs, volunteer to be on a committee, volunteer at our events or in the office, or give back through donations or helping get your employer involved. We have social groups that provide opportunities to make friendships and share with others who are coping with a bleeding disorder. We have committees you can join including the following:

Advocacy – this committee meets once a month and keeps abreast of the legislative and policy decisions that affect all of us. Ensuring access to healthcare is paramount to the quality of life for anyone affected by a bleeding disorder. It also looks for opportunities to create greater awareness with the general public, including outreach to school nurses and other medical professionals.

Fundraising – this committee spearheads our fundraising efforts. Without fundraising, our organization would not exist. This committee is critical in continuing to build relationships with individuals and companies who provide donations to our organization.

Special Events – there are currently 3 committees that organize our special events throughout the year: Salsa Challenge, Walkathon, and Golf. Each committee begins meeting about 6 months before the particular event. It is a great opportunity to learn the ‘behind the scenes’ of these large events as well as meet others in our bleeding disorder community.

Camp Committee – We organize, staff and manage our summer camp called Camp HONOR. It is a week-long camp for kids with bleeding disorders and their siblings. All of our staff are volunteers who make the camp fun, meaningful and memorable for the kids!

You can volunteer by giving your time to help at a particular event, in the office or as a speaker in our volunteer speaker’s bureau. You can get together a walk team for our Walkathon, or simply let others know about our events so they can also come. We are always looking for members who want to help organize our programs, come up with new ideas and help us make sure we are meeting the needs of our community.

Don’t have much time but want to help? You can get your company to contribute to us through jean’s day, 50/50 raffles, or becoming a sponsor for one of our events. You can help us get silent auction items donated to our golf tournament or the Salsa Challenge. You can ask your company for matching funds (many will match whatever you donate). You can donate items for camp, clothes, or even a car!

In whatever way you can or want to get involved, we hope to see more of you! We are here to create a community of sharing , whether it is providing you help when you need it, or having you help others in need. We are here to serve you and to build a strong bond among all of us coping with living with a bleeding disorder.

We hope to see you at the Annual Statewide Meeting on August 28th! Make sure to register today.

With gratitude,

Cindy KomarExecutive Director

Salsa ChallengeThis year, for the first time ever, the 31st annual My Nana’s

Best Tasting Salsa Challenge took place over TWO days! Held on the 7th & 8th of March, 2015 at Steele Indian School Park, this event is the largest fundraiser for the Arizona Hemophilia Association, raising over $145,000 this year alone to help fund programs and services provided to those living with chronic bleeding disorders. This is a culinary festival where contestants compete for the best tasting salsa! Each year we have over 100 salsas entered to be judged for the honor of becoming the Grand Champion salsa.

The grand champion receives $1,000 cash, a retail opportunity

through El Sol Foods to manufacture, distribute and retail their salsa for one year and the title as the best tasting salsa!

This is all possible

because of the wonderful volunteers and sponsors that we have! Special thanks to My Nana’s Best Tasting Tortilla Chips, Title Sponsor, for donating over 4,000 lbs of chips for the event! Thanks also to El Sol Foods, Macayo’s, Fry’s Foods, SRP, New Belguim, Dos Equis, Patron, Casino Arizona, and Pepsi.

We had over 600 volunteers that were critical to the success of the event!

Special thanks to General Dynamics and all of our Salsa and Margarita Mix-Off Judges!

We look forward to seeing you at next year’s event on March 5 & 6, 2016!!

Camp HONORCamp HONOR (Hemophiliacs Overcoming New Obstacles Resourcefully ) is

a week long summer camp in Prescott, Arizona that is open to children ages 8-17 from the bleeding disorder community. This includes those who have a bleeding disorder, as well as their siblings. The mission of Camp HONOR is to enrich the lives of children affected by an inherited bleeding disorder by providing life-changing camp experiences that are exciting, empowering, and educational, in a physically safe and medically sound environment. Our camp is designed to allow children with medical needs the opportunity to experience the camp activities such as archery, camping, sports, team building games, arts and crafts, and swimming, in a loving environment that can meet the special needs of each child.

At Camp HONOR, we strive to:• Teach life skills.• Foster memorable friendships.• Develop medical independence. • Enhance self-worth and self-confidence.• Provide mentoring and leadership opportunities.• Create a community of peers facing similar situations.• Educate campers to become self-advocates for medical care. • Empower campers to gain acceptance of their medical condition.• Provide the highest quality medical care that is non-intrusive to camp life.

The theme for our 22nd year of Camp HONOR was SuperHeroes. The week was full of

activities that reminded the kids that they are their own personal superheroes! Campers participated in programs designed to help them discover their inner strengths and be comfortable with who they are. We discussed what it takes to become a superhero and how we can use our powers to help ourselves and others.

We served over 120 campers with the help of more than 100 volunteers and staff. All of our

camp staff are volunteers who have given up their week to make a difference in the life of a child. Thank you to all of our camp staff for taking the time out from your schedules to be with our community and make a huge impact on our campers!

The Jeremy Storms’ STRAIGHT ARROW AWARD

Jeremy Storms loved Camp HONOR. As a hemophiliac, he attended from its very beginning until the year he passed away in 1996. He loved the fun,

fellowship and challenges. He always demonstrated respect for the camp staff. He was diligent in his efforts in the events and in the encouragement of others. One of the things Jeremy loved at camp was archery. The arrows

on the award are a symbol of that love.

This year’s recipient of

the STRAIGHT ARROW AWARD was Eric Johnson. He truly embraced the camp spirit and displayed what it takes to give your all as a camper at Camp HONOR. Congratulations Eric!!

Above is a photo of the “Straight Arrow Club”, featuring those who attended camp this year and were honored with the award in the past! Pictured are Eric Johnson, Marcos Bojorges, William

Post, and Josh Lebeau.

The oldest unit got to spend a day visiting the Out of Africa Wildlife Park this year.

Their safari tour took them within touching distance to giraffes, zebras, and other rare wildlife!

Our Camp HONOR medical staff team teaches campers with bleeding disorders how to self infuse. Learning the practice of self-infusion is

one of the most important skills to gain in the transition to independence. Our campers end up really wanting to learn and to help others learn which is what Camp HONOR is all about.

The ‘Big Stick’ award is given to campers who successfully infuse

on their own for the first time. This is a big deal at camp and is celebrated by everyone. This year we had 8 kids who received the award!!

CITs (Counselors in Training)Counselors in Training (CIT) is

our leadership program for Camp HONOR campers ages 16 and 17. The program prepares campers to become leaders in camp and life. This group is very cohesive and are great future leaders! The teens had the opportunity to participate in a full day team building program that included a high ropes course and zip line. They also got to cook some of their own meals and desserts

on a grill. In the evenings, the CITs participated in counselor skill building workshops rounded out with some relaxation by the camp fire before bed each night.

The Counselors in Training were given the respon-sibility to come up with their own activities for the

campers while at Camp HONOR. All the Counselors in Training successfully assisted in the evening activi-ties and daily life at camp. We encourage anyone who is interested in the CIT Program to contact Josh at our office!

Each year, in the spring, we host a New Family Picnic and a Camp Picnic for members of the bleeding disorders

community in Arizona. Our New Family Picnic was in March again this year and provided general orientation for families of children who have never been to camp. It also provided them with an opportunity to meet some of the camp staff and have questions answered. The Camp Picnic was in April and we invited the whole community out for this year’s picnic, along with dozens of members of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, who had chosen us as their

charity of the year. The picnic gave both new and returning campers and their parents an opportunity to mingle and discuss camp with both camp staff and experienced campers. Campers enjoyed playing games while parents spoke with other parents and heard presentations from senior camp staff members.

The members of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles were able to see how valuable their fundraising is

to the AHA!

BleedHERs, an adult social and educational group for women with bleeding disorders, as well as carriers,

mothers, wives, daughters and sisters of individuals with inherited bleeding disorders, offers educational and entertaining events through the year. In March, the ladies got together to prepare dinners for their family, then gathered for a meal of their own. On July 16, the

women will meet for a painting party and dinner at our AHA office and in October, they’ll gather again for the Women’s Retreat in Tucson. We look forward to all of the activities this social group has to offer to the women of the bleeding disorders community throughout the year!

BleedHERs

Men’s Retreat

The Men’s group gathered for a weekend retreat in April. The

group traveled to Prescott Pines. The camp offers 85 acres of forested land and is ADA accessible. The men who attended were able to take full advantage of educational activities

as well as bonding time, fun activities (check out the human foosball photo!) and a relaxing time fishing

and enjoying the beautiful scenery of the camp.

Contact Steve Pond at our office for more information or if you’re interested in becoming part

of the Men’s Group!

Actions are louder than words. When it comes to commitment, we believe you are either

“all in” or you’re not. There’s no in-between.

For a quarter-century, the people of Bayer HealthCare have been committed to helping people with

hemophilia A and their families with a wide array of community programs and support services.

The Future Leaders Program kicked off to a great start! For the first time ever, the AHA hosted

a teen specific Legislative Advocacy program, with fantastic results! Through this program, we gave a group of 8 high school age community members a two-night, two-day training session on bleeding disorder history, public speaking skills, advocacy strategies and the importance of advocacy.

The teens also spent time reviewing how the legislative process and state government works.

Then, at our Legislative Day, Lunch on the Lawn event, we put the teens to work networking with the legislators and meeting to discuss the advocacy efforts of the bleeding disorders community. We look forward to hosting this program on an annual basis! Give us a call if you're interested in getting involved!

Legislative Day

Huge thanks to everyone that participated in the AHA’s Legislative Day & Lunch on the Lawn event this year! Your

consistent efforts have made our organization and our community well known and well liked at our State’s Capitol! Our community members attended scheduled meetings with Legislators in their voting districts as well as meeting with Legislators and their staff members over lunch.

The sincerity and the passion from members of our community truly

touched many of these elected officials. Legislators from both sides of the political aisle have voiced their support for finding ways to address some of the issues that families with bleeding disorders in AZ must face.

Please keep in touch with your Legislators, building that relationship so that our community remains in their hearts and minds. Use

the incredibly powerful tools that you already possess, keep telling your story honestly about how bleeding disorders affect your life. With your help, people will understand the challenges that the bleeding disorder community faces, we will be able to move forward with tackling those challenges, and improve the lives for people with bleeding disorders.

NHF Washington DaysThis year, the AHA was able to sponsor six key

members from the bleeding disorder community in Arizona to travel to the National Hemophilia Foundation’s Washington Days event in Washington D.C. Our members joined over 300 people from 43 different

states in meeting with our respective representatives in the US Senate and House of Representatives.

The group spent the first day training how to approach the national legislators. The issues

presented were to be focused on the federal hemophilia programs, ensuring access, and education and research. The group requested to maintain full funding for the federal hemophilia programs at the Maternal and Child Health Bureau and Center for Disease Control. The second request was to ask for the co-sponsoring of the bill PATA (Patients’ Access to Treatment Act), PATA would allow and enable patients’ access to treatments, reduce disability, and limit healthcare costs.

If you would like help contacting your legislators, please contact the Arizona Hemophilia Association!
