FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTORC RRIE THE LL
We are so pleased to welcome Katie Tang to the Alamance Partnership for Children. Katie was born and raised insouthern California and graduated from Bryman College in 1995. She worked as a youth minister for 18 years in
California and also at Our Lady of Grace in Greensboro. Katie and her husband Derek were married in August 2006which brought her to North Carolina. They have four chil-dren: Marisa, aged six, Shayna and Joseph, aged four and
Simone, aged two.
Katies hobbies include cooking and baking to keep her forev-er hungry husband and son fed, sewing, letterboxing, travel-ing with her family, and spending way too many late nights
on Pinterest looking for recipes and sewing projects.
Katies responsibilities include managing the office, assisting
the executive director and finance director, program supportfor all of the Partnerships many activities and keeping the
staff smiling with her sunny disposition!
Happy New YearAnother fiscal year is about to come
to an end for the Alamance Part-
nership for Children. For us, this
feels like the end of a year and
the beginning of one with the
prospect of new funding and dif-
ferent projects. When I look
back and reflect on 2013-2014, I
am pleased to know that we are
serving more children and fami-lies than ever in the history of
this partnership. More children
are showing up ready to begin
their school years and more par-
ents are realizing the importance
of the first years in their chil-
drens lives.
In the coming year, we are plan-
ning to increase our collaborative
efforts within the community aswell as with other Smart Start
partnerships. Knowing that our
Smart Start dollars stand little
chance of increasing in the near
future, it is imperative that we
continue to look for alternative
funding streams and new and
creative ways to partner around
our mission. Thankfully, thestaff and board members of the
Partnership are incredibly dedi-
cated to this goal. In addition,
we are working on better ways of
tracking the progress of our chil-
dren here in Alamance County.
We want to make sure that every
dollar spent is getting our com-
munity the return on the invest-
ment to early childhood develop
ment.
So in the next few months, stay
tuned to learn how we are going
to continue to grow and serve ou
youngest citizens. And as al-
ways, we welcome involvementfrom our community in the way
of board or committee service.
Please contact the Partnership if
you want to become more in-
volved in the services we pro-
vide.

Dolly Partons Imaginaon Library
In 1996, Dolly Parton launched a reading program to benet the children of her home county in east Tennessee. Dolly wanted to foster a lovereading among her countys preschool children and their families. She wanted children to be excited about books and to feel the magic t
books can create. In Alamance County, eligible children receive a free book in the mail per month unl they reach their h birthday.
books, distributed by the Dolly Parton Foundaon, are carefully selected to be age -appropriate and to deliver posive, developmentally
portant skill opportunies for children. Alamance Partnership for Children is currently providing this service to the Eastlawn, Newlin, Andrew
Haw River, Grove Park, Pleasant Grove, and North Graham school zones. To be eligible, a child between the ages of birth to ve years of
needs to reside within one of these districts.
Please mail in the completed enrollment form above, if you are interested in enrolling your child.

Early Experiences
In Life Maer
Over the past year the Alliance has made a conscious
eort to focus on trainings and acvies that raise
awareness of the impact of trauma on the development
of young children. Experiences that occur in childhood,
whether posive or adverse, aect every aspect of a
childs development and can set them on a life trajectory
towards posive mental and physical health or the devel-
opment of mental and physical health dicules.
In young children trauma may be any incident that over-
whelms the childs ability to cope. Children are more
vulnerable to trauma because of their size, age and de-
pendence. Extremely high stress environments such as
those caused by domesc violence, homelessness, abuse
and neglect, caregiver substance abuse or untreated
mental illness, community violence, etc. can be toxic to
the developing brain. These experiences increase the
risk for poor outcomes for young children. There are,
however, protecve factors that can buer and protect
the brain from these damaging insults. The most im-portant of these is a safe, stable and supporve relaon-
ship with a caring adult. For more informaon on ad-
verse childhood experiences and their aect on a childs
development visit the Harvard Center on the Developing
Child at hp://developingchild.harvard.edu/

Got Health Insurance?
Do you and your sta have health insurance? Are you concerned with the
cost of insurance? Confused by what you hear about the Aordable Care
Act (Obamacare) and the Marketplace? You are not alone! The Early Edu-
catorsand ACA CONNECT Project can help.
If your child care center/organizaon has sta or families that sll have not
acquired insurance, have them visit the health insurance Marketplace web-
site, www.healthcare.gov, or contact our oce for free one-on-one guidance. Our counselors are available t
educate and raise awareness about the insurance opons available on the Marketplace. Addionally, we can
help consumers nd out if they qualify for insurance aordability programs including a premium tax credit, co
sharing reducons, Medicaid and/or the Childrens Health Insurance Program. We also conduct outreach and
training sessions, some of which may count toward connuing educaon units (CEUs).
Some may think that they cannot aord health coverage or believe its cheaper to do without. Yet studies ha
shown that the uninsured generally put o medical treatment unl its too late to treat their ailments, which
result in more serious and costly medical issues. Having insurance means geng that ckle in your throat

Health coverage not only helps protect your physical well being, but also keeps the connuity of care in your
classrooms as well.
