In 2009 Paul McCartney decided it was time he record an album of old standards, songs from the 20’s through 40’s that had inspired him as a younger musician. His first contact was to enlist producer Tommy LiPuma and his long-time studio collaborator and 18-time Grammy award winner Al Schmitt. The recording includes contributions from Canadian jazz talent Diana Krall and guest appearances from Stevie Wonder and Eric Clapton. Al Schmitt was an early adopter of Primacoustic’s Recoil Stabilizers

and his monitors have lived atop them for all his projects since. Accord-ing to Al: "I was suspect at first, but after a few minutes with the Recoil Stabilizers I realized how much difference they made. Especially on the low end. I'm keeping these. They work." ~ Kisses on the Bottom was released February 2012

Radial is pleased to announce the Firefly, a 100% discrete class-A tube direct box designed for both studio and live performance. Radial company president Peter Janis explains: "We have been thinking about launching a tube DI to round out our product range, but over the past two years, we have been focused on developing the Workhorse™ and our many 500 series modules. We got back on this project and are pleased to finally be able to bring this exciting DI to market."

The Firefly begins with two inputs to allow quick changes on stage. This can be done using the front panel

footswitch. The instrument signal is immediately routed to a tuner output that is always on. Following the award winning Radial JDV, the Firefly is also equipped with Drag Control load correction. This enables the artist to adjust the load on the magnetic pickup for a much more natural rendering. When bypassed, the load jumps to 4 meg-ohms enabling the Firefly to be used with piezo pickups. The class-A circuit features a select 12AX7 tube drive with both gain and trim controls allowing the user to increase the grit and warmth as needed.

The ‘DF’ down-fire is designed to compensate for the added 2" height by introducing a 5º down-fire angle. Ideal for monitor bridges and shelves that are already properly aligned.

Recoil Stabilizers come in many sizes and firing angles to adapt to various studio setups and the multitude of nearfield monitors on the market. Because the Recoil can add an extra 2-inch height to the monitors, one must consider the current studio setup including shelf height, stand platform if used, orienta-tion of the monitor and the loudspeaker’s mass. Improved acoustics help firefighters perform life-saving workPrimacoustic to the rescue

Built in 2006, the firehall in Riverview, New Brunswick provides fire and rescue services to 20,000 residents. Firefighters respond to over a thousand emergency incidents each year. When you are responsible for providing often life saving services, communication is incredibly important. That is the reason the Deputy Fire Chief Milt Cawley contacted Matt Vey of SSI Audio to audit their building and upgrade the acoustics. The big cavernous nature of the firehall made PA and radio announcements difficult to hear and understand. He recognized that their situation as it stood was just not good enough.Milt Cawley, Deputy Fire Chief: “The firehall is a typical large garage and while we found it operationally

very efficient, the acoustics inherent in a facility like this presented some challenges that we just had to overcome. This is why we brought in SSI Audio.”According to Matt Vey of SSI Audio: “The firefighters were having trouble hearing the calls due to the

amount of reverberations in the room. We were asked to offer a solution that would rectify the issues that were causing the reverb and Primacoustic came to mind right away. The solution had to handle temperature and moisture extremes that come with a facility that is busy 24/7 in all weather conditions. We also had to maintain the look of the building.”

Chief Cawley reports that the addition of the Primacoustic Broadway panels has made a tremendous improvement. The hard working team at the facility now benefits from improved intelligibility. (SSI Audio also installed a new PA system.) “When it comes to public safety you have to work to be the best.”Vey of SSI Audio adds:

New London Kits

When Keb Mo relocated his family to Nashville, his long time engineer and friend John Schirmer took on a new type of project: the building of Keb Mo’s Stu Stu Studios in the 2,900 square foot basement.Having read everything he could

find online and Jeff Cooper’s Building a Recording Studio John took on the job of supervis-ing the build out. They hired the original contractor on the house who had experience in building several studios in Nashville, arranged to have separate electrical wiring installed, dropped the ceiling height and floated the floors on rubber isolators.Once the major construction

elements were taken care of John contacted Primacoustic President Peter Janis to talk about a plan to fine-tune the sound with acoustic panels. John began working with Primacoustic Product Specialist Jay Porter and the planning began. After a couple working revisions the Primacoustic product was shipped to the Stu Stu Studios doorstep where John and Keb Mo’s guitar tech Casey Wasner finished the install in three days. According to John, “It turned out phenomenal. It cost me just under 15 grand as opposed to 70 grand. We’ve got a mixture of bass traps and diffusion and clouds in the control room, and it turned out very cool.”

The award winning Recoil Stabilizer is now available in a wall mount version called the WMR-7. According to Primacoustic president Peter Janis: "Over the years, we have received several requests for a wall mount Recoil for small post rooms that want to mix in 5.1 surround but do not have floor space for stands. The WMR-7 is a fully self contained design that comes with the mounting bracket, shelf and Recoil and allows the user to rotate the speaker to optimize the listening angle. The size & weight has been optimized for popular studio monitor sizes. The design includes impaling screws to secure the angle and earthquake safety strapping for the Recoil and speaker."

Reamping has been around a long time. In fact it is one of the most commonly used tricks in recording as it provides better guitar tones and more consistent recordings. Recently, a group of innovative audio engineers have started to remap their wireless systems to improve the sound of the electric guitar and bass on stage. Radial Engineering opens up the 500 series revolution to a larger audience. The PowerStrip™ (single space 500 series power supply) and the Cube™ (desktop power supply) are both designed to house three of Radial’s expanding range of modules while still being 100% compatible with older Lunchbox(TM) devices. Company president Peter Janis explains the development: "Before launching the PowerStrip and

the Cube we looked at other rack housings that already exist in the market and noticed that they could only be loaded with two modules. This, in our view, poses a serious limitation as one normally combines a preamp, equalizer and compressor into a channel strip. In other words, you really need three modules to do things right. This led us to design both the PowerStrip and the Cube with an external power supply, thus allowing sufficient space to mount three modules."The PowerStrip and the Cube come complete with Phillips screws to secure the modules as they

slide into position via the 15 pin EDAC connector. This is ‘wired’ following the original API standard while unused pins are used to feed the Omniport™ ¼” TRS connector. This innovative connection allows the 500 series manufacturer to personalize their modules by assigning the Omniport to perform a module-specific task. This could for instance be a key input on a gate, an instrument input on a preamp or an effects send and receive port should this be advantageous. To add flexibility, both racks are equipped with standard XLR i/os and is supplemented with ¼” TRS connectors. These can be used as ‘multi’ outputs or for

cross-patching. Once modules are inserted, an innovative ‘feed’ switch replaces the old API patch cord system with an elegant solution that immediately sends the output from the first slot into the second and then to the third. This of course makes it easy to create the ultimate channel strip by combining a Radial Power-Pre™ preamp, Q3™ coil EQ and a Komit™ compressor-limiter. A second ‘link’ switch advances the standard once again by replacing the old ‘solder for stereo’ approach with a simple switch. Now any two modules that are designed to be stereo-linked can be arranged this way by simply toggling a switch. To ensure maximum signal handling both come complete with an 800 milliamp external power supply. This provides more than 250 milliamps per module via a

pooled supply to allow high demand devices such as the Radial PowerTube™ (see below) tube preamp to be comfortably supplied while still providing sufficient current to feed two other standard modules. Full AES compliant 48 volt phantom is of course supported and activated via the preamp’s usual phantom power on-off switch. The external switching power supply may be fed using 100V to 240V thus enabling it to travel around the world by simply changing the electrical cable. And as with all Radial products, the PowerStrip and the Cube are made ultra roadworthy with a 14 gauge steel enclosure and top-of-the-line connectors throughout. The Radial PowerStrip and the Cube bring the power of 500 series modules to studios in an affordable, easy to use format. Delivery will begin in January 2012.

From its first use as a dance hall New Year’s Eve 1946 to a fully modern performance facility re-opening on New Year’s 2012, the Golden Civic Centre is a great success. Bill Usher, Executive Director, Kicking Horse Culture: “They opened it for a dance with 400 people without any heat or plumbing back then. They brought in wood stoves and vented through the windows. They must have had outhouses too...hardy pioneer stock!”Local company Siega Productions

took part in the process of re-visioning the old building from day one in 2006 when the community of 7,000 made the restoration and renovation of their cultural centre their number one priority. Having supplied live sound and technical services to Kicking Horse Culture and the town of Golden for 8 years they were one of the first companies brought in to consult. At 63 years old the building was worn, tired, full of asbestos, was not wheelchair accessible or technically equipped to host any serious performance. John Siega: “We were there from the very beginning to ensure all the good work being done to bring the building up to code structurally and other cosmetic work would work with what we needed to do to fit the building with audio/visual equipment.”Now a state of the art performance venue, marrying the traditional charm and character of the original building

with new technologies was Siega’s challenge. Kicking Horse Culture intends to invite CBC (Canadian Broadcast Corporation) to simulcast and record future shows at the Golden Civic Centre.Siega chose to work with Radial Engineering’s custom shop to design and build a 24 channel main audio

snake/split snake. John Siega: “The snake was custom made for this job and is perfect. At this time the snakes make up all the audio supplied for the job as no PA system was installed but will be revisited in the future.” The snake systems also include several sub snakes, a back line sub snake and front line sub snake.

Siega continues: “The main snake panel is wall mounted at the stage managers position and serves as a termination point for the FOH DMX and VGA runs as well as all the audio. The split snake design was done to allow for traditional monitor mix feeds as well as a feed to a mobile recording truck conduit. I chose Radial for this job because their gear is top of the line.”

The pride of accomplishment is evident from everyone connected to this great community achievement. Bill Usher: “Now we'll have a place that artists will love to perform in and audiences will just to love to come to. It's warm, cozy and not one bad seat in the house.
