Southington history is made fromimportant and interesting articles, pho-tos, artwork and in some cases, legendsfrom the town's past.
- The name, Southington, comes from acombination of two words, SouthFarmington. Before the town was offi-cially incorporated in 1779, it was part ofFarmington. An early name for the townbefore it was called Southington was"Panthorne."
- Samuel Woodruff, the town's firstEuropean settler, was known as the"Father of Southington." He and his fam-ily came to Southington in 1698.
- Although the Native Americans wholived in what became Southington werepeaceful, there were bands of warriorIndians who would raid the farms andhomes in the area. Two small forts werebuilt in the region, one on Pleasant Streetnear where the Calendar House andDePaolo Middle School are today, andanother on Queen Street, near whatwould become the Plainville border. Adoor similar to the door that was on thefront of Pleasant Street-area fort is partof the exhibit at the SouthingtonHistorical Center, 239 Main St.
- People in the area wearied of travelingthe great distance to Farmington in orderto worship at the Congregational Churchthere. "A meeting house, independent ofthe Farmington parish, was first con-structed here in 1726 and was used until1757. Its location on the site of the pres-ent Oak Hill Cemetery is commemoratedby the First Meeting House stone andplaque," according to the brochure, "SeeHistoric Southington," published in 1986by the Central Connecticut TourismDistrict.
- Southington used to be made up ofmany districts, some which eventuallybecame villages in their own right. Ofcourse, there are the more famousPlantsville, Milldale and Marion, whichall had their own schools and post

offices. However, sections of towns thathave nearly faded include South End,Flanders and Patton Brook.
- When the Farmington Canal was dugthrough Southington and finally openedin 1828, it was a safe and efficient way totransport goods to Long Island Sound. The canal, which operated from 1828 to1848 and ran from Northampton, Mass.to New Haven, also transported passen-gers up and down the waterway duringwarm weather. Eventually, the railroadwas built and for a while competed withthe canal, but the large locomotives, which could transport many tons morefreight during the entire year, forced thecanal out of business. The railroad com-pany, which built its right-of-way onparts of the canal towpath, becameknown as the "Canal Line."
- Transportation helped makeSouthington what it is today. The firsttrolley company, the Southington andPlantsville Tramway Co., was one of thefirst trolley systems in the state and thecountry. It was established in 1888, sev-eral months after traction pioneer andinventor Frank Sprague founded the firstsuccessful trolley system in Richmond,Va.
- Southington also had a small airport, which was located in the River Streetarea before homes in the Rethal Driveand Minthal Drive region were built. Bythe 1950s, houses had been built and theairport was gone.
- Interstate 84, which is largely responsi-ble for changing the rural character ofQueen Street, was built in two sections. The first section was built from Danbury
to Southington. As of 1961, the super-highway ended at West Street. Anothersection was built from Hartford toSouthington and that part opened in themid-1960s.
- The town was a place where manyproducts were invented or perfected, including the coffee grinder, screwdriver,water-based cement, paper bags and thethornless rose. The thornless rose wasinvented by Nicholas Grillo, who had ahuge greenhouse complex that was locat-ed on Canal Street, across from ClarkBrothers Bolt Co. in Milldale.
- Southington also was the location forthe first machine-made bolt factory inAmerica. Micah Rugg and MartinBarnes invented a simple machine thatmade bolts and produced these new boltsin a former blacksmith shop in Marion inthe late 1830s. That early factory helpedpave the way for other bolt-manufactur-ing giants such as Clark Brothers andPeck, Stow & Wilcox. The facade fromthe original Rugg and Barnes shop ispreserved at the Southington HistoricalCenter.
- The oldest house still standing inSouthington is the Jonathan Root house, built in 1720, and located at the corner ofNorth Main and Mill streets. Once a tav-ern in the Revolutionary War era, locallegend has it that Gen. GeorgeWashington visited there on his way tomeet with Rochambeau, who hadbrought 6,000 French soldiers to aid theAmerican colonists. The Root Housetoday is owned by local attorneys andhusband and wife Bryan Meccariello andShari Bornstein and serves as theiroffice.
