Thank you to the Southington Board of Education for the support of the programs offered to the Southington community. The Southington Adult Education program has very dedicated staff. Whether you are interested in pursuing your education through our free state man-

dated programs (GED® Preparation, ESL and American Citizenship) or enrichment opportu-nities we have the course for you! We are reflective about our instructional practices so please do not hesitate to contact me with comments or concerns.

Starting on 1/27, 6:00-8:00 p.m. For immigrants preparing for the American Citizenship test, there will be a brief overview of American History, the Constitution and the three branches of government. Help with the citizenship application is also included, along with discussions about the rights, responsibilities and privileges of citizenship.

GED® TEST PREPARATION PROGRAM

Do you need your high school diploma to get a job, to advance to a better paying position, to take college courses or just for personal satisfaction? Designed for students who have not completed their formal high school education, the GED® program may be right for you. Our classes will prepare you to take the GED® exam administered by the State of Connecticut.

Accommodations on the GED® test are available for qualified individuals with a disability. For more information, contact Maureen Wagner, Connecticut State Bureau of Health/Nutrition, Family Services and Adult Education at (860) 807-2110.

There is no charge for materials or for the State Mandated Courses.

Eligibility- Applicants for the test must be 17 years of age or older and no longer in school. Applicants 17 and 18 years of age must submit documentation that they have been withdrawn from high school for at least six months or that their 9th grade class has graduated in order to take the test. (Students 17 - 19 must also present documentation of withdrawal from high school in order to enroll in GED® classes. Bring your documentation with you when you register for classes.)

THE 2014 GED® TEST

There are four sections to the NEW GED® Test in 2014:

Reasoning Through Language Arts II. Mathematical Reasoning III. Science IV. Social Studies

The test is offered in English and Spanish

The test is computer-based (not online) and it offers same day scoring Paper testing only available as an accommodation

There are three opportunities to test per year, per content area

Enrichment Courses

BEGINNING SEWING - W06 Wednesday ~ SHS/C205

Do you have a sewing machine you have never used? Do patterns confuse you? If you have an inter-est in learning to sew or quilt, this class is for you. Everyone will start making a pillow case and learn-ing the machines (bring your own or use one in class). After that, you can choose from a simple pat-tern or quilt to do own your own with help from the instructor. Bring with you to class - scissors, thread, rotary cutter/mat/ruler (optional) and the following fabric for the pillow case: 3/4 yard (main pillow case fabric), 1/3 yard (cuff fabric), 1/8 yard (trim fabric). Fabric should be 100% cotton. Projects that were completed last session included aprons, placemats, and a tote bag! Instructor - K. Veilleux 6 Weeks, 3/19, 6:00-8:00 p.m., $65.00

LEARN TO KNIT & CROCHET - T10 Tuesday ~ SHS/C232

With a little time and patience, you can learn to knit and crochet. Learn basic stitches that can be made into a simple project. Bring a “J” crochet hook, size 10 knitting needles and a skein of 4 ply acrylic yarn to first class. Other supplies will be discussed. First four weeks will be knitting followed by four weeks of crochet. Instructor - M. Lee 8 Weeks, 3/18, 6:30-8:30 p.m., $75.00

PAINTING FOR ALL LEVELS - W04 Wednesday ~ SHS/W280

Beginners can learn the basics with weekly planned exercises designed towards color mixing, tech-nique, composition, and varying subject matter. Drawing skills are not required. Beginners should work with acrylic paints and a supply list will be available to those who request one. Artists with some experience can use the medium of choice (acrylic or oil) and work on individual subject matter or par-ticipate in the more specific lessons designed to expand one’s painting skills. QUILTING: BEGINNING, INTERMEDIATE, ADVANCED– TH10 Thursday ~ SHS/C205

Anyone can quilt in this individualized class! Beginners will work on a small wall quilt, covering every-thing from selecting fabric to the finishing. Intermediate and advanced quilters will work on projects of their choice. First class, beginners should bring a notebook, pencil and enthusiasm! Intermediate and advanced quilters should bring a current or new project and any questions or challenges. Instructor - J. Frederick 9 Weeks, 1/30, 6:30-8:30 p.m., $80.00

SCAPBOOKING - M15 Monday ~ SHS/ C232 Scrapbooking and paper crafting with Cricut (electronic dye cutting). Beginner or advanced partici-pants welcome. Bring in 12” paper cutter and adhesive. $10.00 fee to be paid to instructor on the first night of class for decorative punch incidentals. Other supplies are available to purchase if needed. MICROSOFT EXCEL - M04 Monday ~ SHS/E284

This class will start with an introduction to Excel’s basic functions (copy-cut-paste, toolbar recogni-tion, etc.) The class will be geared to student’s level and will advance to intermediate and advanced level functions such as drilling through worksheets appropriately. If you are not at all proficient in Ex-cel, or if you are looking to brush up your skills or learn some advanced formula functions this is the class for you. At the end of the 10 weeks, students will be able to create spreadsheets with real time functionality. Tuition includes book. Instructor - R. Desrosiers 10 Weeks, 1/27, 5:30-7:00 p.m., $120.00

MICROSOFT OFFICE - M11 Monday ~ SHS/E284

Microsoft office is an excellent resource for people who want to learn more about GENERAL interest topics. Tuition includes book. The following aspects of Microsoft Office will be covered Microsoft Word - Topics covered include editing documents, formatting text, formatting pages, creat-ing tables, etc. Microsoft Excel - Topics covered include editing and formatting worksheets, understanding cells and their function, etc. Microsoft PowerPoint - Topics covered include getting started, editing slides and adding objects to slides. In addition, more advanced topics will be covered, such as adding sound/animation. Mail Merge - Learn how to use mail merge and add a data base in Excel, and then merge it into your letter in word. INTRO TO THE iPad - M08 or W08 Monday and Wednesdays ~ SHS/E384

This class will get you up and running with your iPad. If you have little or no experience with an iPad, you will learn all of the basic skills required to set up your iPad for your specific needs. You will con-figure your settings, set up email accounts, multitask, download applications, use maps and location services, take pictures and video and video conference with other iPad users. Are you interested in learning how to use the free web browser Google Chrome? In this class you will learn all about the browser and the tips and tricks to make is so user-friendly. Topics covered will include installing the free browser, bookmarking favorite web pages, personalizing your viewing expe-rience and much more. Instructor - J. ANALYZING DATA WITH MICROSOFT EXCEL AND MICROSOFT ACCESS - W10 Wednesday ~ SHS/E384

This class will help you understand how to use the data analysis capabilities of Microsoft Excel and Ac-cess. You will learn how to sort and filter data using built in tools and by building queries. You will learn advanced formatting and graphing techniques that will allow you to draw attention directly to the data that you need. You will build formulas and use functions to perform mathematical equations and use tools, like PivotTables, to analyze interrelated data. Mastering the tools in Excel and Access will allow you to detect patterns, evaluate trends, and display data to present your findings in dynamic views. Instructor - J. DIGITAL PHOTO - T09 Tuesday ~ SHS/E284 This course will cover how a camera works, selection of a digital camera, photo composition, and photo processing using Google’s photo editing tool (Picasa, which is free). GOOGLE DOCS– M13 Monday ~ SHS/E384

With Google Docs and Google Drive, you can store your documents online, and access them from any-where, regardless of what software is loaded on your device, PC or laptop. Collaborate on documents and files with others without worrying about multiple versions of the same files floating around. In this course, you will learn the basics of Google Docs and Google Drive. You will learn how to create basic documents, upload files and share those documents and files with others. Some knowledge of word processing and/or spreadsheets is required for this course. You will need to have or create a Gmail ac-count for this course.

In this course, you will learn the essentials of creating, formatting, and sharing documents, spread-sheets, presentations, and forms with Google Drive. Learn how to use Google Docs and the new Google Drive. Learn how to upload Office files into Google Docs, and how to issue permissions for others to view or edit. Learn how to create Google Forms for creating surveys. The data from your forms is collect-ed in your docs, so that you can analyze it with formulas or graphs. BOATING - T17 Tuesday ~ SHS/C232

Public boating course given by the Meriden Power Squadron. This course teaches seamanship, boat handling, rules, use of compass, personal watercraft, etc. An additional 2 weeks will teach how to read a chart, plot courses, and take bearings. BRIDGING THE GAP - Th03 Thursdays ~ SHS/E266

This course is designed for intellectually disabled adults 21 years and older to enable them to maintain previously learned daily life skills, as well as interpersonal and social skills. Lessons will involve social role playing, safety skills, reciting basic information such as; name, address, phone number as well as many interesting activities along the way. Instructors – D. CAKE DECORATING - T03 Tuesday ~ SHS/C203

Learn the fundamentals of cake decorating by creating professional-looking cakes for special occa-sions. This course will teach how to bake, fill, and frost cakes along with making flowers, borders, sug-ar molding, figure piping, and an introduction to fondant. List of supplies will be given in class. GUITAR 101 - T05 Tuesday ~ SHS/C221

So you’ve got a guitar lying around the house and you’ve been telling yourself that one day, you’d like to learn how to play it? That day has come! In this beginners guitar workshop you’ll learn the basics of holding, tuning, and playing chords. Strumming and finger picking will be skills that you will soon be on your way to mastering. Learn how to properly invest and manage your 401(k)s and other retirement/education investments. Learn how to research before buying or selling a stock. BASKETBALL FUNDAMENTALS - Th05 Thursday ~ STRONG

For health and fun come and learn the basics of playing basketball in a group environment. Partici-pants should expect to learn the fundamentals of the game and how these will apply to a team atmos-phere. Each class will have time to scrimmage to use that day’s lesson in a game setting. Latin inspired dance-fitness class that incorporates Latin and International music, with a variety of dance movements, creating a dynamic, exciting, exhilarating, and effective fitness system. ZUMBA FITNESS - M06 Monday ~ FLANDERS

“Ditch the workout, join the party”! Zumba is an exhilarating, effective, easy-to-follow, Latin inspired, calorie burning dance fitness party for all shapes, sizes, and ages. The class combines dance styles such as salsa, merengue, cumbia, reggaeton, and bachata to create a fun-filled cardio workout with muscle-toning benefits. Back pain is the most common musculoskeletal problems, effecting 90% of people in their life-time. A strength and conditioning program for the throwing athlete. This program will provide a physical screen to identify risk factors in order to help prevent significant shoulder and elbow injuries. In stud-ies done on baseball players it was found that 90% of the players included in the study responded to a stretching program within 1-2 weeks when stretching is performed both before and after throwing. Participants will learn specific stretching and strengthening exercises which will help prevent injury along with increase strength to help improve performance. This seminar would be beneficial for all overhead throwing athletes, not just baseball players.
