Introduction

Mr. Ron Walton of Victoria BC. arranged a work permit to camp on mining claim TB # 1069038. Hie purpose of me work was one of information as well as to re-establish the boundary lines on a claim deemed to be two units in size.

Location and Access

The claim is in the Thunder Bay Mining District and is approximately a 200 kilometer drive from that city. A sign on the highway, about 4 kilometers east of the town of Schreiber, points the way into Hays lake. The gravel road from the highway to the lake is 2 kilometers in length.

Mr. Met Joa of Marathon supplied the boat and motor for the crossing of Hays lake.

Recent Developments

The previous year the property was optioned to RJK Explorations Ltd.. An ambitious undertaking by mis company involved power stripping the Joa-Walton Gold Showing.

This meant engineering a raft to float abackhoe the 3 kilometers across die lake. Once on the property they stripped back the overburden and washed the exposed bedrock. Channel sampling followed up the program.

The owner was curious as to the environmental impact of this operation as the claim was returned to Joa and Walton.

Work Carried Out

A site visit assured the author that all was in order. Some sampling was done on the #1 showing as well as anew vein uncovered. These samples went to the mining company presently negotiating an option on this ground.

The claim lines were in need of repair. On August 8 f 96 the author chose to start mis work at the #3 post. This post is situated on a prominent sand point just south of the entrance to a bush road.

Re-blazing the line back to the #2 post there was no outcrop found. The hillside falling away to Twain Lake is heavily treed with young spruce and balsam. The #2 post is a standing stump easily visible in the northwest corner of the lake.

The claim line stretches north 740 meters from Twain Lake . The previously well kept leased line of adjoining claim # 221714 has overgrown considerably. Toe underbrush was quite dense in the openings along the path more so than off the line . Flagging ribbon was added every 20 meters to enhance visibility.

At the 440 meter point, working north, the power stripping is evident. The outcrop that rises out of the till has been well cleaned. In this mixture of porphyry, gabbro and mafics is where the quartz veins are found. The clearing ,of some 25 meters in width, follows the base of the hill at an east - west trend.

The terrain north of the stripping is a gentle slope uphill. Treed with hardwoods and white spruce it reaches apeak and mis is where the #1 post, of claim # 1069038 , is located. Nearby an old #1 post of claim # 278155 is still upright.

Hie claim line west to the area of the #4 post is beginning to overgrow with birch trees, dominant on this slope . Hie under brush was removed and new blazes cut along this line as well.

About the Author

Mr Ron Walton has staked over 200 claims in Ontario previous to 1988. Some of these units were done while hired on by a major mining company at the rate of 150 S l claim. It is on this basis mat the labor rate was calculated.

Hie author holds a prospector's license in British Columbia and is active mere . His main occupation is as a power engineer in the BC Legislature Heating Plant.
