  • 4High grade steel pipes are not manufactured on ahit-or-miss basis. Years of careful research com-prise the first step along the long road to de-veloping a superior product designed for a par-ticular application. Then steel processing has tobe carefully thought-out and proven. Finally, proper manufacturing equipment must be installed, inspection systems perfected, and per-

sonnel trained to the highest levels of com-petence. This is all part of the Sumitomo way ofdoing things right ---- to provide steel pipes whichnot only perform the job correctly and economi-cally, but also to ensure consumer satisfaction. Here are just a few examples of our care andthoroughness:

All materials and processes employed are moni-tored and controlled --- from steel melting, cast-ing and the manufacture of the finished product. Each piece of pipes has its own production histo-ry, its own pedigree with advanced computersystem.

Our special thermo-mechanical treatment (TMCP) results in fine grain size, high strength, high toughness, and excellent registance to hy-drogen induced cracking in H2S environment.DAC (Dynamic Accelerated Cooling) is employedfor such purposes.

    CHARACTERISTICS AND ADVANTAMANUFACTURING PROCESS

High quality steel products start with proper, carefully controlled steel refining. This necessi-tates the use of basic oxygen furnaces and elec-tric arc furnaces depending on the grades andquality levels of steel desiredcarbon steel, alloy steel, or stainless steel. Sophisticated technologies such as vacuum degassing, specialdesulfurization, argon-oxygen decarburization, shielded bottom-pouring ingot-making, mold-rotating ingot-making, and flow air ingot-makingare typical elements in the manufacture of ourhigher quality products.

Sumitomo has always been progressive in thedevelopment and utilization of the most modernpipe making methods in the world. Its pipe millsare incessantly up-dated to take advantage of thelatest in technology and equipment. This assuresthe constant availability of a broad size andgrade range of tubular products produced aseconomically as possible. For welded pipes, anautomatic welding control system has been new-ly developed, using computers to maintain opti-mum welding conditions, resulting in superiorqualities of welds.

A GES OF SUMITOMOS LINE PIPE

The quality of steel pipes is greatly influenced bythe heat treatment method used. Only the mostsuitable heat treatment process is employed andcarefully controlled to impart intended propertiesto the material. For ERW pipes, special heat treat-ment of weld seams is applied to control heattreatment temperatures and cooling rates for afiner and more uniform grain structure of welds.

Non-destructive inspections such as dimensionaland hydrostatic, ultrasonic, eddy current, radio-graphic, or magnetic particle are conducted onall of our steel pipes depending on the customerand/or code specifications.

A wide range of sizes, 1/8---120 (3---3,000 mm) inoutside diameter and 1---50 mm in wall thickness,is available from our various pipe manufacturingprocesses.

  • 6MANUFACTURING PROCESS1. Seamless Steel PipeSeamless steel pipe in sizes rangingfrom 1 to 16 3/4 inches (26 to 426 mm)in outer diameter is mass produced bythe high toe angle piercing, fullyretained bar mandrel mill method, themost advanced technology of its kindin the world. The hot line fully utilizestechnologies that Sumitomo Metalshas accumulated through many yearsof experience and basic research. These industryleading technologies, many of which we developed, includea process computer, a quality controlsystem employing state-of-the-artinspection and measurement devices, and various advanced automation sys-tems.In particular, medium-size seamlesssteel pipe from 5 1/2 to 16 3/4 inches inouter diameter is produced in an ultra-modern facility that began operation in1997.Most of billets are received directlyfrom the round billet continuous cast-ing facility and uniformly heated in awalking-beam type heating furnace, then a hole is opened in the center bythe high toe angle piercer to form hol-low pipe. The steel is next rolled to the

specified thickness by the mandrel mill, then the pipe is rolled to the specifiedouter diameter by the extracting sizer. To further improve performance, thepipe is subjected to Sumitomo Metalsunique in-line heat treatment and thenundergoes exacting ultrasonic inspec-tion. The result is seamless steel pipeof the highest quality and performance. The high toe angle piercer is a productof Sumitomo Metals intensiveresearch and development. In 1983 weintroduced a piercer for producingsmall-size pipe.Further technical refinements thatreduce shearing stress and preventabrasion of the pipes inner surfacehave enabled this method to be usedfor producing high-alloy steel pipe aswell. The mandrel mill is equipped with theworlds most advanced fully retainedbar system and a hydraulic AGC pipewall thickness control system. More-over, the extracting sizer features alength control system and an AGCouter diameter control system, enabling the production of sealmesssteel pipe with superior dimensionalprecision.

This process for producing high-qual-ity seamless steel pipe, the most tech-nologially advanced process of its kindin the world, is called the SMI-MAXProcess". Small-size seamless steel pipe from 1to 5 1/2 inches in outer diameter is pro-duced on a state-of-the-art mill thatbegan operation in 1983. The holes inthe heated billets are made by a hightoe-angle piercer developed by Sumi-tomo Metals, then the pipe wall is rolledto the specified thickness by a fullyretained bar mandrel mill. After reheat-ing the rolled base pipe in a reheatingfurnace, it is rolled to the specified outerdiameter by a stretch reducer.High alloy steel (such as stainless steel)tubes are produced by an extrusionprocess which uses glass powder forlubrication.Large diameter pipes with heavy wallsare made using the forging processwith a horizontal hydraulic press. Whenrequired, tubes made by these mills arecold-worked by a draw bench or a coldreducing machine in order to give themhigher dimensional accuracy andsmoother surface finish.

    2. Welded Steel PipesCurrently, ERW (Electric Resistance Welding) pro-cesses are applied to produce small and mediumdiameter line pipes. A wide range of pipes withup to 24-inch outside diameters are also pro-duced by these processes.

SAW (Submerged Arc Welding) combined withUOE (U-ing, O-ing and Expanding) processes,Roll Bending, Press Bending, and Spiral Formingprocesses are utilized to produce large diameterpipes for gas or oil transmission and gas or wa-ter supply.

Small diameter pipes for ordinary usages aremanufactured by a continuous Hot ERW Processwhich has been developed by the company as animproved version of a butt-welding process.

Sumitomo Metals also produces stainless steelwelded pipes with up to 120-inch outside diam-eters using Tube Mills, 3 Roll Bending or PressBending Mills.

As Sumitomo Metals is an integrated steel manu-facturer, materials for pipe and tubes such assteel plates and coils are supplied to the weldpipe mills from our own plate mills. Therefore, the quality of our products is controlled fromsteel making through to the final step of the pipemaking process.
