2 NEWS FROM THE HILL

day of rest was of such importance to God, that He established it as part of His law: "Work shall be done for six days, but the seventh is the Sab-bath of rest, holy to the LORD. Therefore, the children of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, to ob-serve the Sabbath throughout their generations as a perpetual covenant -- for in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day He rested and was re-freshed." (Exodus 31:15-17) God created the heavens and the earth, birds of the air and beasts of the field. Every living thing seen today originally was created by God. But the scriptures teach that God does not sleep nor does He need rest, yet He chose to set aside a day to rest from His work. He did so as an example for all of mankind to follow. This day of rest is meant to be a time of refresh-ing, of looking over accomplishments and either enjoying the results or seeking ways for improvement. God, upon His day of rest, looked over everything He created said it was good. His work was complete. Unfortunately, this is not the case for workers today. There will always be more work to finish. But the concept of assessment is still valid. Labor Day, with all of its fun and frolic, can be a time that Christians set aside each year to assess where they are with their goals, their priorities and the like. They can look at their personal life and determine if they are staying on track with their personal walk with God, and their overall organization and time manage-ment. They can look at their family life and see if they are keeping their priorities in line with God's will, such as their relationships with their spouses, their children and others. And lastly, they can look at their working life and deter-mine if they are following Godly principles when it comes to how they handle their work responsibilities, their relationships with coworkers and employers, and their choice of occupation.

After looking at each of these areas in their life, the believer can then determine if there are any changes that need to take place. While some changes can be made immediately, others may take time to transition. With Labor Day observed on the first Monday of September, it allows for time to set new directional goals that can be im-plemented on or after the start of the New Year. While Christians set aside a weekly day of rest to relax and rejuvenate, they can also deter-mine to take an additional day, as not only a worker but as a responsible believer, to do a life assessment. And just as the secular world sets aside a day every year to honor the accomplish-ments of the workers of America, so Christians can set aside a day to honor the accomplishments that God has done both through their lives, and in their lives. Happy Labor Day!

Session meets next on September 8, 2019.

Sunday Evening Meals will resume in September. However, we need volunteers to cook each Sunday evening. There are several options available, i.e. rotate Sundays if we have enough volunteers; or the volunteer would cook for a month at a time, etc. If you have ideas, want to volunteer, or have questions, please see Kaila Gibson or Karen Gibson.

Many of you have volunteered for various duties in an around the church. These duties have been posted on a sign-up sheet on the kitchen door in the fel-lowship hall.

If you’ve forgotten what you signed up for or if you can’t complete the duty for whatever reason, please review the sign up sheet and let Trudy Swilling or

Karen Gibson know of any changes. Of course, if you want to volun-teer for any of the duties that are needed to keep our facility in tip-top shape, please do so. Thanks for all you do!

Sumach Women’s Ministry has supported regional efforts to assist families in Beattyville, Kentucky, one of the poorest communities in the United States. For the last few years, we have focused on sending help at Christmas. Obviously, there are ongoing needs throughout the year. Beginning at the first of January, this will be an ongoing project. Remember to please bring any gently used, clean coats (all sizes) or any of the following items: socks, hats, gloves, mittens or non-perishable food items. There will be a more extensive list provided in October.

There is a table in the old fellowship hall that is designated to store any donated items you may bring. Of course, money will be accepted - just designate any donations to “Beattyville project.” Place your check in the offering plate or give to Carolyn Luffman.

Thank you for all the donations you have already made. Please be in prayer for this community and know any future donations will be as appreciated as were the previous donations.

Thank you for all you do to support the projects and programs of Sumach Women’s Ministry.

Women’s Ministry Theme for 2018—2019:

SEND ME! Isaiah 6:8

Get ready to hear some amazing stories from twelve women who answered God’s “call” to “GO!”. This year’s Bible study resource explores the theme “Send Me” based on the call of

Isaiah in chapter 6 : “Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I

send, who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I; send me!” (6:8)

From that point on, Isaiah was an outspoken messenger for God. Sometimes his message was received with an open, receptive heart. More times than not, though, it was met with re-sistance, obstinacy, and anger. Even though God called him in the midst of worship, the task was not an easy one. All ladies of the church are invited to attend monthly meetings of Sumach Women’s Minis-try. Meetings are the third Wednesday of each month beginning at 6:30 pm. A short program is presented from Bible studies provided. Come join us! It’s fun, fellowship, educational studies and prayer time. We’d love to see you there!
